animals. Children sat wide-eyed on the floor, surrounding the native Australian as he introduced several tropical reptiles, inviting the youngsters to touch and hold the animals.

Observing over four decades of family tradition and community service Chamblin to hold anniversary, memorial sale

BY PATRICIA BEECH PEOPLE'S DEFENDER For more than four decades Paul Wayne Chamblin and his wife Joyce served the people of Adams County selling home furnishings out of their long rambling furni-

ture store on the corner of Rice Drive in West Union.

Next week their daughter, Paula Aulino, will celebrate their store's 44th year of business with a special anniversary sale to honor her parents' memory.

Roberta C. Hunt

Ralph A. Downs

Ralph A. Downs, age 84 years, died July 18, 2016 in Pensacola, Fla. He was born in Adams County, Ohio on July 15, 1932 to Arthur and Lena Bell (Jenner) Downs. Ralph graduated from Winchester High School in 1950. He moved to Ruskin, Fla. in 1972 and to Pensacola in 2004. Ralph was a retired independent trucker. He

was a member of the Gulf Coast Christian Church.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; Doris (Kelch) Downs on June 14, 2016.

His survivors include two sons, Keith and wife Tiphane and Ken and wife Joanne; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one great great grandaughter; one sister, Ruth Hughes of Russellville; two brothers, Jack Downs of Manchester and Robert Downs of Winchester; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held on July 25, 2016 at the Gulf Coast Christian Church with burial at Bayview Memorial Park in Pensacola.

Hannah Jane Teegarden Hannah J Teegarden, 96, formerly of Ripley, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the Adams County Manor.

She was born Jan. 20, 1920 in Ripley to the late Stace and Lucille (Smith) Coslett.

She belonged to the Christian Church of Ripley and formerly worked at the US Shoe Factory.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Teegarden in 1976, a son, James Teegarden and a great granddaughter: Brooklyn Pell.

She is survived by her son, Melvin (Billie Jean) Teegarden of Cincinnati;

her three daughters, Dorothy Stephenson, Shirley (Bob) Pell, and Christina (Cecil) Shelton all of West Union; nine grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 29 at the Wilson Home for Funerals. Reverend Dale Little will officiate. Burial will follow at the Manchester Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from noon until 2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, KY 41056.

Ira L. Anderson Ira Leeray Anderson, 49, of Aberdeen, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the UC Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was born March 12, 1967 in Hamilton County, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (Baker) Evans; son, Christian Lee Anderson and mother, Betty Jean Anderson.

The visitation is Friday,

July 29, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lafferty Funeral Home in West Union with the funeral service at 1 p.m.

Reverend Richard Collins will officiate. The interment is at Charter Oak Cemetery in Aberdeen.

Anne Kiley Louiso Brodt Anne Kiley Louiso Brodt age 83 years of West Union, died Sunday July 24, 2016 at the Adams County Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Brodt was born July 17, 1933, the daughter of the late John and Carrie (Bickett) Kiley in St. Martin, Ohio.

Besides her parents. Mrs. Brodt was preceded in death by her brothers Jack and Denny Kiley and her sister Justine Aubry.

Mrs. Brodt is survived by her four sons, Mike and Patti Louiso of Batavia, Randy and Linda Louiso of West Union, Mark and Donna Louiso of Moscow, and Todd and Jane Louiso of Zionsville, Ind.; eight daughters, Janet Herring of Fayetteville, Dot and Jim Ramos of Santa Barbara, Calif., Debbie and Danny Barber of Fayetteville, Kay and Mark Little of Galena, Ohio, Cindy and Mitch Erwin of Fayetteville, Sandy Cotherman of Saegertown, Pa., Roberta (Bert) and Jeff Darnell of Farmington Hills, Mich.,

Annette and Mike Houch of Wilmington.

Also surviving is her former husband John Brodt of West Union; four brothers, Harvey and Joyce Kiley of Sanibel Island, Fla., Ray and Betty Kiley of Hillsboro, Bob and Barb Kiley of Fayetteville, and Ralph Kiley of Fayetteville; two sisters, Mary and John Medley of Owensboro, Ky. and Sister Dorothy Kiley of Cincinnati; also many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 30, 2016 at noon at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in West Union with Father Ted Kosse officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the St. Martin Cemetery in Fayetteville. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

Tener J Douglas, 95 years of Peebles, passed away at the Adams County Regional Medical Center on Monday, July 25, 2016.

He was born in Peebles on May 2, 1921, the son of the late Harry and Mabel (Tener) Douglas.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife Fern (McCoy) Douglas who passed away on Nov. 6, 2006.

Tener was a member of the Conway Chapel United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the US Army, having served in World War II. He was also an active member of the American Legion at

Post #594 in Peebles. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Paul and Jean Douglas of Peebles, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Services were held at the Wallace Thompson Funeral home in Peebles on Friday July 29, 2016 at 1 p.m., with a Military Graveside service following at Locust Grove Cemetery, with rites provided by the Adams County Honor Guard.

Friends called at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Friday July 29.

A home for Zoey is overdue

Hi! Zoey here again. I'm starting to get really bummed about still being here at the shelter. I'm starting to wonder if there's a family out there for me. Everyone seems to walk right by me and pick someone else when they come to the shelter.

I sit here month after month losing hope that I will ever get out of here.

I've been here since September of 2015 don't you know? I'm a really great girl, I just need a special kind of family. I'm not the most stylish dog out there but I have so many great qualities if someone would just give me the chance.

I love to play with dog toys. The more they squeak the merrier, I go crazy for that stuff. Don't get me started on treats. Those milk bone things are my favorite.

You know what the best part of all is-I'm free! That's right. I have no adoption fee. I'm what the great people at the shelter call a sponsored dog. From what I understand that means that someone who loves me and wants me to find my forever home has given the shelter my adoption so that someone who may not have the money to adopt me can.

So with an approved adoption application, you could take me home without paying anything out of your pocket.

Kennedys are big winners at National Junior Shorthorn Show

BY MARK CARPENTER PEOPLE’S DEFENDER Fulton Kennedy of Seaman was a winner in the recent National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth conference, held in St. Paul, Minn. from July 2-7.

Overall, a total of 613 animals were pre-entered and 322 junior exhibitors traveled all across the nation from 20 states to compete for the National Champion top honors.

Kennedy was the Division VIII Purebred Owned Cow/Calf Pair Grand Champion, exhibiting CLF Cindy Beauty 1404 ET and daughter FPK Cindy Beauty 161.

Fulton also exhibited the Division I Grand Champion Female in the Bred and Owned Show with FPK Cindy Beauty.

Kennedy’s sister Karlie also had a productive stay in Minnesota, garner several awards for herself.

Karlie placed fifth in the Prospector I age division in the Livestock Judging Contest, then first in the Prospector I age division of the Showmanship Contest, showing of her skills in exhibiting her calf in one of the most prestigious competitions at the Shorthorn Show.

She also placed third in the Prospector I age division in the Speech Contest, giving an extemporaneous speech on the topic of Shorthorns or the cattle industry. To continue her big week, Karlie was with a team that placed second in the Team Fitting Contest, a competition where a group of

youngsters combine to fit and present an animal.

Karlie and her partner finished fourth in the Team Salesmanship Contest in the Prospector II division and then she was third overall in the

accumulated standings for all the contests she was part of.

Why don’t you trust me?

Larry was relatively young when he was admitted to hospice, at least relatively young to me. He was only 55.

Larry and his wife Terry lived up a country road and pastored a small church nearby. Larry appeared calculated, deliberate, and a little private.

But when talking about his faith he was animated.

Larry admitted: “When I was diagnosed with cancer I withdrew from everybody. I needed to be alone to sort things out.

But, I finally got to the point where I trusted God with my life and I was able to go on. But then I started worrying about my family. I worried about my children. I wanted to make sure they were all saved before I died. I worried about how they would do without me.”

Then one day God asked me, ‘Larry, you’ve trusted me with your life, but why don’t you trust me with your family’s life?’ Then I said, ‘Yes Lord’, but not out loud.

My lips weren’t moving, but my heart and mind were. Such a peace came over me.”

Larry shook his head in regret, tears filled his eyes and he said, “It took me all those years. I wish I’d trusted Him sooner.” I told Larry, “I wish I’d met you and we’d had this conversation sooner.”

Larry’s revelation reminds me of a story about Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, in his book “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire”.

It’s lengthy but worth it.

He wrote, “Carol and I went through the darkest two-and-a-half-year tunnel. Our oldest daughter Chrissy not only drew away from us, but also away from God, she even left our home. There were many nights we had no idea where she was. I tried everything. I begged, I pleaded, I scolded, I argued, I tried to control

her with money, but the more I pressed the worse Chrissy got. I knew I had to let go of this situation.

One cold Tuesday night during the prayer meeting an usher handed me a note. A young woman LOREN HARDIN had STRAIGHT PATHS written, ‘Pastor Cymbala, I feel impressed that we should stop the meeting and all pray for your daughter.’

My tear ducts had run dry, but I prayed as best I knew.

Thirty-two hours later, on Thursday morning, as I was shaving, Carol suddenly burst through the door. ‘Go down stairs, Chrissy’s here!’ I wiped off the shaving foam and headed down the stairs.As I came around the corner, I saw my daughter on the kitchen floor, and rocking on her hands and knees, sobbing. She grabbed my pant leg and began pouring out her anguish.

‘Daddy, Daddy, I’ve sinned against God. I’ve sinned against myself.

I’ve sinned against you and Mommy. Please forgive me Daddy,’ she said

with a start. Who was praying for me Daddy?

Tell me the truth, who was praying for me Tuesday night?’ “ As a father and husband, I’m coming to realize that there are two things which are merely illusions, control and protection. I’m not The Father, I’m not The Son, and I’m not The Holy Spirit. He is where I can’t be, He knows what I don’t know and He loves my family even more than I me. So, In light of who He is, and what I’m not, you’d think I’d pray more and worry less.

People tell us all the time, “Don’t worry, things will work out”, but they leave us hanging, without a prescription for our malady. But not so with God. The Apostle Paul wrote our prescription, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:6-7) Loren Hardin is a hospice social worker at Southern Ohio Medical Center and can be reached at hardinl@somc.org or at 740-356-2525

For the past two or three years I have written about, and discussed at length during Pesticide Re-certification, Palmer Amaranth.

Palmer Amaranth is a terrible weed that we must control. Remember it is a pigweed that has been a problem in the south for a few years. Do not take it lightly.

Adams County sees its fair share of “critters”, but not usually like the one found by Larry Dailey on Wednesday night. While mowing around the pond on his property, Dailey saw an unusual set of eyes staring back at him and realized, “Hey, there's a gator in the pond.”

The elder Dailey called his son Nathan, one of the operators of Dailey's Outfitters in Peebles, and told him to come on over, after convincing his son that he really hadn't lost his mind. Nathan hopped on his tractor and made his way to his father's property, where he verified that it indeed was an alligator roaming the grass and area around the pond.

“I have two young boys, five and seven years old, who play around that pond a lot,” said Nathan. “I don't want them around alligators so my first call was to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to ask them how to proceed. They were quite surprised when I explained to them that we had a gator here in Adams County.”

The ODNR offered to send someone from Butler County to help capture the gator, but Dailey didn't want to wait that long and chance the animal escaping, and since it was not a

In a nutshell, you collect five new leaves that have developed following an herbicide application, and send them to U of I via rapid delivery along with one sample submission form per sample. Cost is $50 per sample, which includes screening for both glyphosate and site 14 herbicides. We highly recommend making this investment where resistance characteristics of a waterhemp population are unknown.

This information will inform future decisions on herbicides for control of waterhemp, ensuring that appropriate herbicides are used and that the population does not develop resistance to site 14 herbicides as rapidly.

The LibertyLink soybean system is, of course, another option for management of waterhemp, as well as Xtend and Enlist soybean systems whenever they become available. It should be noted that: 1) use of glufosinate, dicamba, or 2,4-D to help manage this weed does not change the approach, and these herbicides must be applied to small plants to control waterhemp; and 2) the assumption is that inappropriate and continued use of these herbicides would lead to the development of resistance to them. And in fact there are already some populations of waterhemp farther west with resistance to 2,4-D.

they suggest applying glyphosate to small waterhemp plants, and then monitoring to determine if the population is responding. If there is no response, the next step is immediate application with a PPO inhibitor.

The drawback here of course is that glyphosateresistant waterhemp will continue to grow during this brief period of evaluation following glyphosate application, possibly reducing the effectiveness of the PPO herbicide.

Waterhemp requires a combination of residual and POST herbicides, with the goal of applying POST herbicides to plants not more than 6 inches tall. In a number of Ohio fields with waterhemp that we know of, growers were either unaware they had waterhemp and inadvertently let it get far bigger than This, or were apparently still adhering to the “I’ll spray glyphosate whenever I get around to it – what, me worry” approach.

Waterhemp produces a lot of seed and one or two years of this approach will guarantee the presence of waterhemp for years to come. It’s largely too late to provide much helpful guidance for this summer’s waterhemp control programs.

What’s essential to accomplish still this year though, for future planning, is to figure out whether a waterhemp population is resistant to glyphosate and/or site 14 herbicides.

She calls her return to her parent's store “bittersweet”.

“It's good to be back in the furniture store,” she says. “Being here brings back happy memories, but it also really makes me miss my Mom and Dad. My parents loved this county, they loved their business and being able to serve people through their business.”

Aulino, who spent several years working in the corporate world before starting her own interior design business in Columbus, says returning to her parent's store has given her the opportunity to reconnect with people from her childhood.

“There are such good people here, and it's comforting knowing people who knew your parents, it's a wonderful connection.”

Returning to oversee her parent's store, while continuing to run her own business is a daunting enterprise, but she is driven by a greater purpose.

“I'm trying to carry on the tradition my parents started in 1972,” she says. “ As Dad would say, 'to serve the

fine people of Adams and surrounding counties'.”

Aulino isn't just mimicking her father's favorite expression, she has a deep appreciation for her parent's legacy of reaching out to help people through their business.

“They truly loved what they did, and they saw the business as an opportunity to reach out and help people,” she says. “Quality and value were always their goal in business and it always made them happy when someone would say, we bought a sofa or chair from you 25 years ago, it's still good, but we're ready for something new.”

Aulino spent her growing up years working with her parents in the family business.

“My childhood was unique because I went to work with my parents every day after school – not many kids get to do that,” she says. “I'd sit in a rocking chair by the front door and when someone pulled up I'd run back and tell Mom there was a customer, and she'd ask me, 'Is it a looker or a buyer' because I had a knack for telling them apart.”

While Aulino has a wealth of happy memories

from those years, she and her family also faced dark times and challenges that drew them closer together and forged an inner strength that would sustain them through many difficult years.

During her Sophomore year at Ohio State her father was diagnosed with cancer.

He began a battle with the disease that would last more than three decades before it took his life.

“Dad never said, 'Why me?', throughout his illnesses. I think he felt like, 'Why not me?' I never saw him get down about his illnesses, he always said, 'you know, it's just the way it is', and he chose to see it as an opportunity to help others.”

Chamblin's battles with cancer were well known in the community, and others who were similarly stricken would visit his store to talk about their own struggles.

Among them was the daughter of one of his competitors, Judy Mosier Campbell.

“Wayne and I were experiencing bouts with cancer at nearly the same time almost 30 years ago,” Campbell says. “We forged a special relationship of mentoring and support for

each other. Mine was fortunately a one time occurrence, but Wayne fought battle after battle with such courage and faith that he was an inspiration to me and so many others.”

Fourteen years ago, in the midst of her father's ongoing struggle with illness, Aulino's mother was also diagnosed with a very rare form of breast cancer.

Within 30 days her liver was completely consumed and within two months it ended her life.

Aulino, who had taken a leave of absence from her job during her mother's illness, returned to work, then two months later, walked away from the corporate world.

“When she died, I thought life's just too short, work was always so stressful, people were always gunning for your job, so I left and decided to focus on my own business.”

Her decision to step out on her own brought a new opportunity to work with her father.

“It was nice for Dad and I to work together again,” she said. “He'd come to Columbus and work with me, hang pictures, and give advice, we had fun doing it,

it gave him something to do, and that's how we've been for the past 14 years.”

In 2015, in his 83rd year, her father's cancer returned.

The prognosis was dire. “I was so sad,” Aulino says.

“But, Dad said 'kid, you've had me 25 years longer than you should have, let's just count our blessings', he really felt God put this in his life for a reason.”

Before her father's passing she was to receive one more blessing from him that would sustain her during the months following his death.

“I'd given Dad a little book for Christmas that consisted of questions you could ask your father like what was your first job, what's the best advice you ever got, who was your best friend when you were young. We spent three weeks going through that book, and it was one of the best gifts I could have ever received from my dad. As a child, your parents are just your parents, but because of that book I got to know him more as an individual his struggles, his joys, his dreams, and the funny things that happened when he was young.”

battle with cancer came to its end. “Dad died early on a Sunday morning and he had a positive attitude right up to the end. You tell yourself it's the natural order, but I can't tell you how many times during a day I want to ask him something, or tell him something. I miss him so much.”

She calls her father “the hippest old man I've ever known.” “He taught me to be thankful for everything, to see blessings everywhere. He loved God, he loved people, he loved music, he was vital and vibrant, he was just a wonder.”

As she prepares for the store's anniversary sale, Aulino finds herself coping with the double-edged emotions of grief.

“It's a wonderful thing to be here, and it's a hard thing to be here,” she says. “I feel Dad's spirit is still with us, and I want to honor him by running this sale in a way that would make him proud.”

The anniversary sale begins Saturday, July 30 with extended hours every other day (9 a.m.-6 p.m.), open Sunday 1-5 p.m., and the week-long event will end Saturday, Aug. 6.

Rushton's interest in animals has been a lifelong adventure. “I took my own sons, Peter and Taylor, to creeks and ravines to search for reptiles when they were young,” he said. “We started our own collection, and my sons would take them to school to share with their teachers and other students.

After spending nearly three decades in the corporate world, Rushton left his six-figure job behind in 2003 to pursue his dream of working with animals and children.

“I've been able to mesh my passions together and do something I love every day of the week,” he says.

“Kids respond very well to this program, they really listen once you get their attention and get them focused.”

All of Rushton's animals are captive bred, and he impresses upon children the importance of not removing animals from their native environment.

“Because of animals being on the endangered list, or diminishing because of changes in their habitats, anyone who wants a pet should buy only those bred in captivity,” he says.

Just as their baseball counterparts had done the day before, the participants in the Southern Hills Youth League All-Star games on Sunday afternoon were faced with another day of extremely hot and humid weather, but of course, that didn't slow them down a bit.

From dancing across the diamond to Home Run Derbies to exciting softball action, the day was another success, perhaps most of all for the concession people, who saw a constant line of fans scooping up those waters and Gatorades to keep themselves and their athletes hydrated.

As the day before, all of the

diamonds at the West Union Recreation Park were put to good use as SHYL softball players from Sub-D all the way up to “B” League showed off their talents to a large contingent of parents, grandparents, family members, and fans.

The softball players in “C' and “B” ball had their own Home Run Derbies, though moved just a bit closer to the fence, which encouraged nearly every player in attendance to take their hacks. With C103's Brad Rolfe again on hand to provide the commentary, the Derbies were again a hit and when Rolfe switched the sound system to dance music, the girls obliged, breaking out their best moves on the diamond.

The SHYL Softball league is composed of teams from Adams, Brown, and Highland counties, all of whom had representatives on hand Sunday afternoon. Players on Sunday came from West Union, Peebles, Manchester, North Adams, Ripley, Whiteoak, Lynchburg, and Eastern.

The games themselves saw players from the same team playing on different teams and coaches coaching against perhaps their own players, which added to the uniqueness of the day.

Each athlete on hand was presented with an All-Star medal to help commemorate their special day.

The following traffic advisory includes road construction and major maintenance projects requiring long-term lane restrictions and/or closures along the state and federal highway system within ODOT District 9. Crews will be working from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, as weather permits, as work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little to no impact to traffic; however, motorists are reminded of the need for additional caution in work zones where crews will be moving on and off routes. The project is anticipated to be completed in mid-fall. (#16-1008) A districtwide guardrail replacement project has begun, and crews will be replacing guardrail at various locations on routes

throughout the area during weekday, business hours as weather permits. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers, arrow boards and/or temporary signals.

The project is anticipated to be completed in early fall. (#16-0180) A districtwide bridge repair project is under way, with construction beginning in Ross County.

Crews will be repairing expansion joints on bridges at various locations, including U.S. 35, S.R. 772 and S.R. 104 in Ross County; U.S. 23 in Scioto County; and U.S. 52 and S.R. 217 in Lawrence County.

Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of arrow boards, flaggers and/or temporary signals during operational hours.

ADAMS COUNTY Monday, Aug. 1: S.R. 125 will be closed between T.R. 80106 (Kent Lane) and T.R. 13 (Aid Run Road) for a culvert replacement project. The project site is located approximately 1.5 miles east of the Brown County line, and throughout construction, traffic will be detoured via S.R. 136, S.R. 32 and U.S. 62 in Brown County; a local detour will also be established. The project is scheduled to be completed in early fall. (#16-0341) A sidewalk construction project is under way on S.R. 41 in Peebles, and crews will be working along South Main Street (S.R. 41) between Olive and Chautauqua streets to install sidewalks and

repair steps. Although there should be little impact to motorists, traffic will be maintained on the affected streets as needed by flaggers. All work is anticipated to be completed by late July. (#16-0379) A culvert liner installation project is under way on S.R. 32, and crews will be installing a culvert liner at the route’s 21.54-mile marker, just east of C.R. 127 (Black Hollow Road).

As most work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little to no impact to motorists throughout construction.

However, traffic on twolane routes will be maintained by flaggers as needed when crews are working at designated locations. (#16-0318) A culvert liner installation project has begun on S.R. 247 at the 8.82-mile marker, just north of West Union. Crews will be installing a liner in a culvert that is situated between C.R. 22 (Chapparal Road) and T.R. 76 (Rigdon Road), and as most work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little impact to motorists.

However, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers as needed during daytime, working hours. (#16-0103) A bridge replacement project has begun on U.S. 52, between T.R. 285 (Lindsey Hollow Road) and T.R. 59 (Buckeye Station Road), approximately four miles east of Manchester. Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one, 10foot lane with the use of temporary signals, and all work is anticipated to be completed in early fall. (#15-3047) S.R. 137 is closed just east of Cherry Fork for a bridge replacement. The project site is located between S.R. 136 and T.R. 34 (Paint Road), and the route will be closed for up to 45 days. While S.R. 137 is closed, motorists will be detoured via S.R. 136, S.R. 32 and S.R. 247.

All work is anticipated to be completed in late summer. (#16-0098) S.R. 136 is closed at its junction with T.R. 270 (Daniel Road), approximately one-half mile south of the Highland County line, for a bridge replacement project. The route will be closed for up to 45 days, and while it is closed, motorists will be detoured via S.R. 32 and U.S. 62. All work is anticipated to be completed in late summer. (#16-0044) S.R. 73 is reduced to one lane between T.R. 196 (Dutch Thomas Road) and T.R. 118 (Seaman Road), approximately 1.5 miles north of S.R. 41 at Peebles, for a bridge replacement project.

Throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one, 10-foot lane with the use of temporary signals. The project is anticipated to be completed in late summer. As most work will be conducted off the roadway, there should be little to no impact to motorists throughout construction. The Board of Adams County Commissioners met in regular session on July 18, 2016, in the Government Center, with the following members present: Brian Baldridge, and Paul Worley.

Commissioner Caraway was away serving in Ohio’s Delegation to the Republican National Convention is Cleveland.

The meeting was opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Deputy Clerk Linda Mendenhall.

The minutes of the previous regular session were approved and spread upon the pages of the Commissioners’ Journal.

The Board conducted a Directors’ meeting at 9:30 a.m. to review the current projects and status of each department under the jurisdiction of the Adams County Board of Commissioners. Liberty Farmers 4-H Club coming out of retirement The Liberty Farmers 4-H club was formed in the early 1960's by Emmett and Joan Yates. The club was active into the early 90's and is now being brought out of retirement by their daughter Linda Kimmerly, her husband Samuel Kimmerly, Jr. and good friend Jennifer Taylor.

The first meeting of the Liberty Farmers is being planned for Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Sunset Bowling Alley in Panhandle. This

club will be open enrollment all are welcome.

Cloverbuds must be age five and enrolled in Kindergarten as of Jan. 1, 2017. Members must be at least nine years old and in third grade by Jan. 1, 2017 and not older than 19 before Jan. 1, 2017. The club is not currently accepting any new advisors at this time.

Growing up on the farm meant no summer vacations, but we always seemed to squeeze in a long drive after Sunday dinner.

My husband and I continue the tradition and usually take a drive to check the crops and my attention is always drawn to what is blooming along the roadside. There have been a few times when I have asked him to turn around and go back so I could take a picture of something I can’t identify.

Have you been noticing what is showing its colors lately? The Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is spectacular this year as is the Chicory (Cichorium intybus).

The Records

According to Stan Tekiela, author of Wildflowers of Ohio, Chicory is also known as Blue Sailor or Ragged Sailor. Its few flowers open one at a time and last only one day. This European import, believed to come from Eurasia, was brought to the U.S. to be cultivated for its long taproot, which can be roasted and ground as a coffee substitute or additive.

One of my newest roadside discoveries is Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum).

According to Tekiela, this tall plant is common along roads, wet ditches, prairies, and wet meadows. Boneset is easy to identify by its large crinkled leaves and large leaf base that joins around the stem, making the plant appear to be growing through one large leaf

Boneset getting ready to bloom (perfoliate). Closely related to Joe-pye Weed and White Snakeroot, Boneset is one of the few late-summerblooming plants. It is a great nectar plant for Bronze Copper, Monarch, Crescent, and Fritillary butterflies.

The heat and humidity has been tough on my container plants. I looked out on one of the hottest days and my three pots of mint were wilted. The vegetable plants in the garden seemed to be handling the heat, but I have been watering the cucumbers and squash. I am “patiently� waiting for the green tomatoes to start ripening. Have you been checking for pests and diseases? Things can happen quickly this time of year, Better to be safe, then sorry.
