WHAT IS MAN? II
Last week I said that there were 2 reasons that God was so interested in mankind. I gave you the first one and now I will give you the second reason. Go with me to Hebrews 2:5-8: “For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour and didst set him over the works of thy hands. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him,” The writer of Hebrews is saying: take a good long look at everything that God put under man’s control, but, it is not quite all there yet. We have been trying to control things for the past 6000 years but we have not succeeded very well. Why? The answer is simple, sin. God gave dominion over His creation to Adam and Eve, but after they sinned the curse came into play. Man has tried and tried. No matter what we do we still cannot get it under control. We cannot control the weather, the weeds, nor even the bugs. Look at the little lady bug like beetles we have brought over from Japan to feed the turkeys. We controlled that real well didn’t we? But what is even worse is that the Bible says we do a better job of controlling nature than we do of controling our own selves. We can not even control out own tongue! The fact is that nature is more obedient to God than man is. But listen to this next verse, verse 9: “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” You see, when Jesus came to be born of a women, He became a man. therefore He was also made a little lower than the angels for a very important reason. It was so that He could taste death for all of us because the wages of sin is death (Roman 6:23). Hebrews 2:10: “For it became him, for whom are all things, are by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of

their salvation perfect through sufferings.” Jesus became the captain of our salvation when he died on that old rugged cross! So, in all reality, Psalm 8 is really a prophetic Psalm that is pointing towards Jesus Christ. It was talking about Jesus being made a little lower than the angels and that He was crowned with glory because now He is seated at the right hand of God the Father. He has a name that is above every name and that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. But He first had to come and become one of us. So the main reason that God is so interested in mankind is that God the Father knew that His Son would one day become a man to save man who was made in God’s image, after His likeness! So everything that Adam and Eve lost in the Garden of Eden because of sin, Jesus Christ reclaimed on Calvary’s cross. And yet, even at this time, it isn’t quite there yet. However, there is a time that everything will be under His feet. The Bible says that all of creation will submit to His kingship and that it will revert back to Garden of Eden like conditions. The lion and the lamb will lay together and a child will be able to sit by a poisonous snake without any harm. Finally all things will be under subjection to a man, the Son of man, Jesus Christ. Psalm 8 has not yet been completely fufilled but it will be fufilled during the messianic kingdom when Jesus Christ rules supreme. So what is it about man that God is mindful of us? It is because He loves us and has a plan for us. He thinks about us all the time. If you don’t know Christ as your Saviour, He is thinking about you. He wants to be your Saviour.
