GOD WILL NOT SHARE HIS GLORY God will not share His glory with anyone! Go with me to Acts 12. The story begins with King Herod. It is not the Herod that we find back at the time of the birth of Christ. It is the grandson of Herod the Great. He was a ruthless murderer who ruled his region with an iron fist. But, it is not Herod that I want you to remember. What I want you to remember is that God will not share His glory! God is to receive all glory and honor. He is the KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS! Verse 1: “Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)” He was a people pleaser even though he was a ruthless leader. When Herod saw that the Jews were excited about the execution of James, he went after Peter. Verse 4: “And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldeirs to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.” It was the day of unleavened bread, which was the passover, so Herod was going to wait until it was over to perform the execution. Verse 5: “Peter therefore was kept in prison; but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” There is power in a praying church! When a church is afflicted and persecuted it should unite in prayer! A church united in prayer is unstoppable! It has power! So, look what happens: “And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains; and the keepers before the door kept the prison.” Herod was serious about this execution! But while Herod had his plans, the church had different plans. Verse 7: “And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him and a light shined in the prison; and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.” God must have put blinders on those soldiers. It is as if they are not even in the room! Now, stop and think

REV. TED R. HOUSE BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com about this. If you were Peter and you knew that James was just executed and you knew that you were the next one to be under the sword, what would you be doing? Was Peter in there worrying and biting his fingernails? No, he was sleeping soundly! What kind of faith did Peter have that he could go into this prison, knowing that in the morning he was to be beheaded, and he could just lay down and sleep so soundly that the angel had to smote him on the side? Peter wasn’t fretting; he wasn’t up praying all night! He was just sleeping; God was going to take care of everything. You see, God is not surprised. He is not asleep. He knows everything that is going on in our lives. Now watch; Peter’s chains fell right off. Verse 8: “And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.” Peter thought he was having a dream but by the time he got out to the street he realized it was real. The church was praying and God answered their prayer! Verse 19: “And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.” Herod quickly left town! The day came when Herod gave speech to the people of Caesarea and they responded saying: “...It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.” Verse 23-24 says: “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. But, the word of God grew and multiplied.” This story began with Herod’s power but ends with God’s. God will not share His glory!
