COVERING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Philippians 3:4: “Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:” The Apostle Paul here is giving his qualifications. He continues in verses 5-9: “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” I think this is a confusing thing to our society and to every society that has ever been on the top side of God’s green earth. Sometimes we hear Christians say that we ought to live our lives so others may see our good works. Well, that is good, but, some nonbelievers live just as good, and sometimes better, than we do! Sometimes they do more for the poor, more for the puppies, more for the sick and hungry people, and so on. If we are in a contest between our righteousness and their righteousness, we are in a losing battle. It is not our righteousness that makes the difference between them and us; it is Christ’s righteousness which makes the difference. For instance, take these two boys growing up with the same mom and dad, I would think that they were close to the same age, both relatively decent, both of equal intelligence, but one accepted by God and the other not. The one accepted by God may not have been as good in character as the one He rejected. I am talking about Cain and Abel. Cain’s personal righteousness might have exceeded that of Abel’s. However, Abel wasn’t righteous because of his character. He was only counted righteous because of his sacrifice. Although the Bible does not give us much detail about these boys, it does tell us about their difference sacrifices. Therefore, the only difference that is evident, is the

sacrifice! Cain offered unto the LORD the fruit of the ground while Abel offered a lamb. Look with me in Genesis chapter 4 and 3. It states that Cain brought an offering unto the LORD. He was the first that was mentioned bringing an offering unto the LORD, not Abel. He evidently believed in the LORD. I don’t think we can question his sincerity. It was probably the very best that he had to offer. That may have been why he was so disappointed that his sacrifice was not accepted. The problem is that our very best isn’t enough. In verse 4, Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. The animal was slaughtered. Now look at Genesis 3:21: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” God was the first one ever to kill an animal. The Bible says that without the shedding of blood there is no remission. God provided Adam and Eve with garments, made from the sacrifice of the animal, to act as a covering for them. It was a type of the end product. Jesus Christ was the end product. It is His blood that covers us. It is our garment of righteousness. It was the blood which was the deciding factor between the two sacrifices of Cain and Abel. There was no blood shed in Cain’s sacrifice, therefore there was no covering garment of righteousness. Abel’s covering garment of righteousness was the shed blood of the lamb. Our covering of righteousness is the shed blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Our righteousness and good works are not what get us to heaven! Like Paul said: “...not having mine own righteousness...but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith”.
