Pollinators need your help! Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at a critical point in their own survival. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline. We know for certain, however, that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help improve their

health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country. The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge (MPGC) is a nationwide call to action to preserve and create gardens and landscapes that help revive the health of pollinators across America. MPGC hopes to move millions of individuals, kids, and families outdoors and make a connection between pollinators and the healthy food people eat. This challenge is being launched by The National Pollinator Garden Network, an unprecedented collaboration of national, regional, conservation and gardening groups to support the President’s Executive Strategy to “Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators”. Here’s how you can help! 1. Plant a pollinator garden – any size is great! From window and patio planters, to home gardens, to pathways and roadsides, to acres of prairies and meadows – all can help. 2. Support pollinator friendly businesses – Purchase plants or seeds from nurseries, garden centers, and seed suppliers who offer pollinator-friendly plants and seeds suited to your local area. 3. BEE Counted – Add a photo of your garden or landscape to the S.H.A.R.E. map. Anyone and any size garden can join in the campaign to reach 1 million sites for pollinators. Pollinator gardens should: 1. Use plants that provide nectar and pollen sources 2. Provide a water source 3. Be situated in sunny areas with wind breaks 4. Create large “pollinator targets” of native or non-invasive plants

DON’T RUN AHEAD OF GOD PART II R . T R.

Last week we were studying in Joshua chapter 3 when the nation of Israel was getting ready to cross over into the promised land. We only got as far as verse 4 and I believe that there are several more things we could learn from this portion of Scripture. Verses 3-4 said when speaking of the ark of the covenant: “... When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God... then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. Yet there shall be a space between you and it... come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.” They were simple but very specific instructions. I said last week that when you are facing a situation that you have never faced before you must be careful not to get ahead of God. Wait for Him to move. He will show you the way to handle the situation. More often than not, we do not wait but follow our own course of action and then find ourselves in a predicament. Now let’s look at verse 5: “And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” The second thing you should do when facing a problem you have never faced before is to sanctify yourself. To sanctify is to make something that was unholy holy, to set apart something as holy, or to make something free from sin. Before you are saved you are a sinner. After you are saved you are a saint because Jesus took all your sins and washed you in His own blood. You change position from being a sinner on your way to Hell to being a saint on your way to Heaven. You might not feel like a saint, your friends might not look at you as a saint, but the Bible says that you are a saint after you have received Christ as your Saviour. You went from being a child of the devil to being a child of God! John 1:12 states: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God...” You are set apart from this world. God sees you as righteous, not because of your own righteousness, but because He sees the righteousness of Christ covering you. The Bible says that our righteousness is as filthy rags. So you are set apart, but, the problem is that

you live in this old world and it gets on you and you still have this weak flesh. Therefore, you must sanctify yourself and get alone with God. Ask yourself: Am I right with God? Because if you are going to see the way God wants you to go, your relationship with God needs to be right. The last part of verse 5 states: “...for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” The third thing we can learn from this Scripture is: the Lord is already working in your tomorrow. There is a promise that He will do wonders among you. When? It says tomorrow! God already knew what He was going to do, but the people were required to do something first. They were to follow instructions and to sanctify themselves. God knew what He was going to do but the people didn’t. They knew no more than you do as to what is going to happen tomorrow. Corresponding Scripture about God’s provision is found in Matthew 6:25-34. God loves you and He wants what is best for you but He says: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God...” In verse 30 He says: “...O ye of little faith?” It is a faith issue. When you are standing on the precipice of something that you have never faced before, some challenge, some mountain in your life, some loss, what it really comes down to is a faith issue. Can you trust God to take care of your tomorrow? As kids would say: God’s got this! So remember this: as the Lord was with you in the past, He will be with you in the future. Look at verse 7 of chapter 3 in Joshua. It ends with: “...as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.” God reminded Joshua of how He was with Moses in the past and promising Joshua that He would be with him in the future. He promised us in Hebrews 13:5: “... I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

5. Establish continuous bloom throughout the growing season 6. Eliminate or minimize the impact of pesticides If you would like more information on this important challenge for our pollinators, visit their website at Millionpollinatorgardens.org. You can also find great information about attracting pollinators to your garden by visiting Ohioline.osu.edu. As I take my daily “walk about” I always have my phone handy to take photographs of what’s going on as far as blooms, butterflies, etc. The bees have been so busy foraging that I am able to get close ups without utilizing my zoom! Sadly, there will be a third less daylilies blooming at my house thanks to my deer “buddies”. We have corn planted in all the fields around us this year, so the nibblers have moved their grazing closer to my flowers! Hostas are also being trimmed selectively by deer as well as my little family of bunnies residing under my big Blue spruce tree in the front yard. Are you harvesting from your garden? Have you harvested your garlic scapes? Remember to email your gardening questions to Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer, Mike Hannah, at mhannah2@msn.com. I’m headed out to the lower hillside where my thistles love to grow…..game on!
