VIEWS OF THE CROSS-II Last week I talked about 2 of the 7 views of the Cross. The first one was the view of the Roman soldiers who first mocked Him and then crucified Him. The second was of the thieves hanging on each side of Him. One had faith and the other did not. Now let’s take a look at the third view. It is of the passers by that day. Matthew 27:39- says: “And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.” They knew who Jesus was. They knew that He had prophesied: “...Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” So as they walked by they were wagging their heads in disgust and yelling up at Him. Mocking, laughing: You think you’re the Son of God? Come on down from that cross if you are so great; if you are who you say you are! Now you know, if you are wagging your head at someone, it is just a way of showing your disbelief and disgust. Can you just imagine the conversations going on among them? In reality, those conversations have not stopped. They are still going on today: “That preacher don’t know what he is talking about.” “That church is full of hypocrites!” “That bible they are always talking about is just a book written by men and they think it is the Word of God!” They would like to get rid of all of us, so that we would leave them alone. They would not have to feel guilty about living in sin. But, do you know what? Jesus loved that crowd, those soldiers, those thieves, those passers by and He loves the disbelievers today. We know that because He said: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” The enemies of the cross; the enemies of the preacher; the enemies of the Word of God, they don’t know what they are doing. We need to be compassionate towards the lost. Now, the next view of Jesus, the fourth view, we find in verses 41-43: “Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in
REV. TED R. HOUSE
BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH MT. ORAB www.bbcmtorab.com God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.” The religious crowd was going right along with the rest of them. Of all the mocking, theirs was the most vile. Come down, they said, then we will believe you. Jesus had preached for 3 1/2 years, had performed many miracles, He raised the dead, and they wouldn’t believe Him. Even if He had come down from the cross they would not have believed Him! There are people all over the world that are religious as can be and are as lost as a goose. They are religious as long as it fits their own needs. Did you get what they said? “He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him...” Vile as can be! The Father was watching this whole thing and He saw His only begotten Son nailed to the cross, hanging there naked in shame, an object of ridicule. The Father in compassion just shuts the lights off. The sins of the world were resting on His beloved Son. The Bible says Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus could have come down from that cross, but, if He had, we all would have been forever lost. He bore that cross, the ridicule, the beatings, the shame, the pain, for no other reason but you and me. The sins of the world was placed on this man Jesus! He was the sacrifice for our sins, He paid the price, so that we might be reconciled back to the Father. What greater love could there be? But yet, people still ridicule Him, mock Him, and despise Him. Are you one of them? Do you wag your head in disbelief? Next week I will give you the last 3 views of the Cross to consider.
