WINTERTON-ON-SEA PARISH COUNCIL Having enjoyed a quiet pre-election period up to May this year, the work of the Council has now gathered pace again, and we are making progress on a number of issues.

Footpaths have been a recent topic of discussion, and residents will be pleased to know that the path between Winterton Valley Estate and Long Beach is now with Norfolk County Council’s legal department. We hope that this will be completed soon.

The Neighbourhood Plan is currently at the pre-consultation stage with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, and we are waiting for their comments on our draft Plan before we put it to the community for your thoughts. Thankfully, it was decided by GYBC that two costly reports relating to environmental impact were not required, as the Dunes are already heavily protected by the SSSI status.

We continue to look into options for the changing rooms at the Playing Field. An outline planning application was submitted for the footprint of the extension, however GYBC required a full planning application, which would cost an additional ÂŁ2,000 to produce. Before committing to this expense, we are looking at alternative, less expensive options such as fully converted shipping containers, which would last a long time. This matter is becoming urgent, as the current changing rooms are dilapidated.

Finally, we have been made aware of some rumours circulating around the village saying that the Village Hall will be closing. The Council would like to state that there is no intention of this happening, and is pleased to say that we are investing in bringing the building up to a suitable standard for hire, which in turn will increase income. Please do support the Village Hall at fundraising events and by hiring it - ultimately, any shortfall will be met through Council Tax, as we want this important facility to remain available in Winterton-on-Sea.

JOB VACANCY VILLAGE HALL CARETAKER SIX HOURS PER WEEK, £9/HOUR Duties to include cleaning, minor maintenance, welcoming new hirers, and ensuring that the Hall is ready for hire. This is a flexible role that would suit a retired person, someone looking for a small job based locally, or a job share. The post holder(s) will be expected to visit the Hall after each days hire, which can be evenings or early mornings to suit.

PARISH COUNCILLOR VACANCIES At the time of going to press, Winterton-on-Sea Parish Council had two vacancies for the office of Councillor.

We would love to fill these! Are you community-minded, with a little spare time? Do you want to influence the decisions made in and about your village? Then this is the role for you! Your voluntary time can be as much or as little as you can manage, and if you are a busy person, there’s roles which can be done to fit around you. WINTERTON-ON-SEA VILLAGE HALL Further to the last newsletter new dates for upcoming events: 1�� September - Village Summer Fayre and Fun Dog Show 29�� September - Village Garage Sale 21�� November - Salvation Army Collection 1�� December - Christmas Fayre The new Village Hall Committee is well into its plans to revitalise the facility in order to attract more users whilst benefiting regular clubs and organisations including a full deep clean, redecoration, new kitchen equipment and much more. We are currently taking quotes to put new flooring in the corridor/toilet areas, storage area, kitchen and entrance hall. We also have plans to take on a part time caretaker so that the hall is checked after each use and prepared accordingly, and also to welcome occasional and one off users. In the meantime two of the Committee, Claire and Elaine, are performing these tasks voluntarily and we thank them for that. We also have plans to present evenings of music, poetry, books and others in due course to enhance the village life experience as the very successful Cinema Club has already demonstrated. Our aim is to have a Village Hall and its offerings to be proud of and the envy of our neighbouring villages.

HORSEY SEALS In February and March this year a large male grey seal was seen on the beaches of Winterton and Horsey with a bright yellow toy flying ring embedded in its neck. There were numerous sightings, but it was always too close to the sea for a successful capture.

On the 3rd April the seal was reported to be on the beach between Winterton and Horsey and well away from the waters edge. Rescuers from Marine and Wildlife Rescue and Friends of Horsey Seals who are trained seal rescuers attended and successfully captured him.

He was taken to the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital at East Winch and the deeply embedded flying ring was carefully cut off, revealing a horrible deep cut 2” wide round the entire neck of the seal.

It was carefully nursed at the Centre with antibiotics and given the registration name of ‘Sir David Attenborough’ after the pioneering naturalist. After three months of intense treatment, Sir David recovered well enough and was returned to Winterton on Wednesday 3�� July and released back into the sea where he belongs. This is the third seal captured with a flying ring embedded in its neck from along this stretch of the coast and the public are urged not to play with these toys near the open sea. WINTERTON-ON-SEA CHURCH Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way with our Flower Festival at the beginning of June. Within this benefice and all the parishes there is always something going on. We raised just over £1000.

For Winterton during the summer we have our Gift Day on Saturday 24�� August. Donations to help maintain the church for the future can be brought to the village shop from 8am to 1pm and then from 2pm to 4pm. Our church being the parish church is open and available to all, as is the churches ministry. For any spiritual need, confession, confidential talk, please contact myself (393628) likewise for christenings or marriages.

Our Harvest Thanksgiving is on Sunday 22ⁿ� September at the 9am Parish Mass. Suitable gifts are welcome from anyone who would like to decorate our parish church.

The church is first of all the people, not the building. Too many people think of going to church as if it’s a special visit to a building much the same as if we visited a stately home.

But Church is about joining in with very ordinary people, who are conscious that they aren’t saints, in worshipping God. Don’t be put off by the thought that you wouldn’t “know what to do” Just come along some Sunday at 9am and join us, find out for yourself what it’s all about.

WINTERTON-ON-SEA CHURCH On Sunday 29�� September we have a Benefice service, which means all four of the churches in our group of parishes will worship together. The service in September is here in Winterton and will be at 10am, not the usual time of 9am.

The first Saturday in August, September and October, Church Yard Tidy Up. 10am - 12noon. Please volunteer your time to come along and help. Wear gloves, shears and a rake if you have them a petrol strimmer these would be useful. Many thanks to the few who regularly turn up to help.

TS FEARLESS MARINE CADETS A lot has happened for the troop in the last two months. D-Day saw one of our cadets become a bit a viral sensation after a video of him helping to lay 8,500 roses on Normandy’s war graves caught the attention of the armed forces online community. The troop also received a letter of thanks from the Archbishop of Canterbury for our work there. Those of the troop who stayed home for D-Day did the troop proud with their performance at the Great Yarmouth commemorations, which they wonderfully repeated at the Desert Rats events a week and a half later.

At the beginning of June the troop agreed an aim to help within the village of Winterton more, as thanks for having us for the last 18 years. The first weekend of June, the troop helped the primary school clean up the pond and nursery school areas, making the pond area more useful for the pupils. The cadets had a great time and hopefully the new area has grown some grass when they go back in September. The 12�� July we performed at the primary school’s open evening and since our first night back from a break in July, the troop has been regularly maintaining the outside areas of the village hall and keeping the yard weed free, ready for Winterton in Bloom. The 1�� September we will be helping with the primary school’s fete and we are planning other clean ups and projects to help the community for the future. We will also be continuing with our cleaning stations at the end of each night within the hall.

As for the next 2 months, with the summer holidays in full swing, the cadets will be having a bit more fun, with exercises

TS FEARLESS MARINE CADETS for August. We will also be practicing and preparing for our Passing Out Parade in September and Trafalgar Night and Parade in October. The 11�� August we will also be helping with ASD’s Helping Hands family fun day in Caister and we are still awaiting confirmation on more events for these months and the rest of the year.

For now, have a lovely summer and I’ll update you again in October.

Hermanus Quiz The June quiz raised £122, half was donated to the Lifeboat Restoration and half to the Cricket Club. July’s quiz raised £128 which was split between Winterton School and the Cadets. The next quiz is on Thursday 8�� August. Debbie Cox

WINTERTON BOWLS CLUB We are halfway through the Bowls Season, time flies when you’re having fun! That’s exactly what our members and regular visitors - keen to be involved - have been doing every Saturday afternoon.

Sun shining, lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, shouts of ‘well bowled’ or more often ‘unlucky’ and lots of laughter. All followed by a good chat at tea break.

We have had some Club competitions:A Memorial Triples in memory of Gary Bendelow, a sadly missed long time member of the Club and Winterton resident.; An Open Pairs; and A Mens Pairs.

We now look forward to a good second half of the season where there will be a Ladies Singles at the start of August and a final Triples on August 24��, when we will also have a small spread of sandwiches, nibbles and cakes, for what is always a lovely afternoon.

We are a very small club, but all this is made possible by all members being involved - from organising Saturday roll-ups, catering, cleaning to an end of season tidy up of the site. We have a green keeping team who work all year on the grounds and for this we are very grateful. There is a fundraising team, Captains for the leagues, a Competition Secretary and a Committee who work all year behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the Club. It is a Club run by the members for the members so we can all enjoy a game of bowls! Why not come and meet us, new members and visitors are always welcome.

WINTERTON CINEMA SOCIETY Winterton Cinema Society will be showing ‘A STAR IS BORN’ on Saturday 31�� August. This is the recent version starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and it will be interesting to compare it to the previous two versions. A must for all lovers of musicals (and judging by the sell-outs for Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody, Winterton has more than its fair share) so buy your tickets early.

On Saturday 28�� September our film will be ‘GREEN BOOK’ which won the Oscar for best picture in 2018. This moving but comic story charts a tour of the deep south by the black pianist Don Shirley in 1962 with his white chauffeur and bouncer Tony Lip. Impressions and relations are all revised along this musical road trip, a feel good movie with some belting numbers.

On Saturday 26�� October the film will be ‘THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN’. This is Robert Retford’s final outing after a brilliant career both in front and behind the camera. Again based on a true story, this time based on a small time bank robber, Forrest Tucker, who successfully led ‘The Over The Hill ‘gang in the 1970’s. Nominated for 4 Golden Globes, this was a surprising hit late in 2018, and was hailed by critics as a fitting tribute to end Retford’s career.

Films begin at 7.30pm prompt in the Village Hall. Tickets from the Post Office at £5 each which include free tea or coffee.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH August is well and truly here now, and as I sit writing this, who knows whether it’s going to be a summer of rain or shine! Today I have seen the first corn fields being harvested locally, so hopefully the weather will be kind to our farmers. To tempt fate (and don’t blame me if August is a wash-out!), I thought we could do a barbeque special. Rather than the usual meat, why not try fish, with vegetable accompaniments? And fruit to finish - all done on the barbeque. REMEMBER - always make sure your barbeque is up to the correct temperature before cooking, and make sure food is cooked through before serving.

BBQ Salmon - serves 4 225ml soy sauce 2 tablespoons red wine ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 4salmon steaks Combine soy sauce, red wine, ginger and black pepper in a large, re-sealable plastic bag. Seal and shake vigorously to mix ingredients. Add salmon steaks, squeeze out excess air and seal.

Refrigerate, turning frequently to keep all sides in contact with the liquid, for at least two hours.

Remove salmon steaks from bag. On a medium high heat barbeque, cook for about 5 minutes per side, basting freely with extra marinade.

Mexican Corn on the Cob - serves 4 4 ears of sweetcorn, husks removed 60g butter, melted 4 tablespoons mayonnaise 65g grated hard cheese (eg parmesan)

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Mexican Corn on the Cob (continued) On a medium high heat barbeque, grill the corn until hot and lightly charred all over, 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the temperature of the barbeque. Remove and roll in melted butter, then spread evenly with mayonnaise. Sprinkle with cheese and serve.

Asparagus on the Barbeque - serves 4 500g fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Lightly coat the asparagus spears with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. On a high heat barbeque, cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or to desired tenderness.

Apples in Coals - serves 6 6 apples, cored 6 tablespoons chopped, dried apricots 6 tablespoons raisins 6 tablespoons soft brown sugar 6 knobs butter Place an apple in the centre of a large piece of foil. Spoon 1 tablespoon of each ingredient into the core, together with 1 knob of butter. Wrap tightly in foil. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Place apples directly onto hot charcoal, using fireproof tongs.

Carefully add coals over the top of each apple. Cook for 30 minutes, or until apples are soft.

Remove apples from heat and allow to cool before serving.

THE ENCORE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS….

We are (drum roll please)………… The Encore Theatre Company, having been born out of the growth of Ludham Players who have been treading the boards of Ludham Village Hall, along with the talented members of the recently disbanded Hemsby Harlequins. We are currently laughing our way through the rehearsals of Encore's first production of The Wizard of Oz, that is currently celebrating its 80th year anniversary. Curtains go up and lights will shine bright in Hemsby Village Hall on the 5th - 7th December 2019, with an all singing, all dancing, all energetic cast and crew. Why not follow the Yellow Brick Road and show your support to faces old and new and enjoy an evening of Emerald Cities, Wizards, Witches and Munchkins.
