CLEMSON Clemson, with a population of over 15,000, is the largest of the four communities served by the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. This number is augmented ten months of the year by over 21,000 students attending Clemson University. The City of Clemson and Clemson University work together in a uniquely cooperative way that has created a special character for the overall community. The successful partnership is evidenced by its selection as the outstanding Town and Gown community for the past six years by the International Town and Gown Association. Clemson University influences the character of the Clemson living experience in ways that are embraced and supported by residents. Fall football weekends are

a perfect example. Orange is seen everywhere. The crowds support the local merchants. The University and City police forces work together to direct and control gameday traffic. The cultural offerings at the Brooks Center with music, art exhibits, student theater productions, architectural projects and film screenings enhance the community living experience. Clemson University adds advantages to living in Clemson. Clemson has many community events and activities such as: Clemsonfest (a Chamber and Community Independence Day celebration), the annual Christmas Parade each December, May’s Festival of Arts (focused on exposing the community to various art mediums), USTA Southern Level 1A Tennis Championship, and the Clemson Farmers Market. In addition, the University provides traditional events shared with the Community

including: student-organized First Friday Parade in August, Rock the John, Military Appreciation Day and Tigerama which kicks off Homecoming weekend. Clemson is surrounded by beautiful natural resources including mountains, waterfalls, lakes and scenic countryside. Add to these the abundance of recreational opportunities such as the bike trails found in the Clemson Experimental Forest, to the Central-Clemson Recreation Center with an Olympic-sized pool, and Nettles Park with several quality baseball fields, tennis courts and a spacious dog park. Walker Golf Course situated on Clemson University’s campus and Lake Hartwell is touted as one of the most beautiful courses in the area. Flower and nature lovers have a gem in their own hometown. The S.C. Botanical Garden (also on the Clemson University campus) is worth several seasonal visits a year.

Quality housing is another feature of Clemson living. Many attractive neighborhoods make up the City enhancing the Clemson experience. See “Welcome to the Neighborhood” for more information about the many great communities that make up the Clemson area. The Clemson area is unique in many ways which serves to attract visitors and residents choosing to relocate. The free CATbus service offers the second largest bus ridership in South Carolina. Scenic beauty with waterfalls in abundance, nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, large lakes great for outdoor enthusiasts, four hospitable seasons, the vitality of the University scene, and the genuine friendliness and southern hospitality of the residents all combine to make people want to return. As residents will tell you, Clemson is a great place to live.

CENTRAL The Town of Central sits less than three miles from the City of Clemson in between Clemson University and Southern Wesleyan University. The growth of both Universities is a contributing factor to Central’s recent growth. Additionally, the area around the Walmart-anchored shopping center, located just south of town, has spurred commercial growth. This town of over 5,000 residents had a prominent role in the early development of the Pickens County area. Situated as the central point on the railroad between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina it developed as a railroad town that served as the prime terminal where engines could be fueled and changed. Hence, the name Central. The railroad continues to be a prominent feature of the Town. The Central Railroad Museum is a train buff’s must see venue. Model trains and railroad history are preserved by the Central Railroad Club members who maintain the museum. Each spring the Central Area Business Council produces the Central Railroad

10

Festival. The main street is blocked off for entertainment, food and vendor booths with a railroad theme woven into the proceedings. Railroad paraphernalia is sold by vendors. The Railroad Club sets up large display boards of operating model trains, the Railroad Museum opens its doors, and railroad entertainment is on the menu. Adding to the railroad lure is an original red caboose, mounted on a platform at the corner of E Main Street and Church Street, which has become a popular photo opportunity for visitors and train buffs. Railroading isn’t the only history. Much interesting local history is chronicled at the Central Heritage Museum. Samuel Maverick Sr., who died in 1852, is reputed to have been the richest man in South Carolina at one time. He was a neighbor of John C. Calhoun, Senator, Orator and Andrew Jackson’s Vice President. Samuel Maverick’s son Samuel Maverick, Jr. moved to Texas. During the struggle to take Texas from Mexico, Maverick, Jr. stood with Davy

Crockett and Jim Bowie at the Alamo. He was the only survivor having been sent to secure reinforcements for the embattled mission station before it fell to the Mexican Army. The younger Maverick was involved in the founding of San Antonio and the term “Maverick” was coined to describe one who did not brand his calves, an independent individual who did not go along with a group, a perfect description of this former South Carolinian. Another point of interest in this historic community is Collins Ole Town. Although only open by appointment, this pre-depressionera open-air museum includes a country store, barbershop, little red school house and blacksmith shop. Visiting the site provides a feeling for life as it was lived in the country almost 100 years ago. For history dating over 150 years ago a visit to Freedoms Hill Church on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University brings visitors in touch with the story of the congregation’s founding in 1847 by a Wesleyan Methodist Minister who opposed slavery in the turbulent years before the Civil War.

Grand Central Station Disc Golf Course

Adding to the Railroad theme is the Grand Central Station Disc Golf Course. Owned and operated by the Town of Central, this course was designed around the Town’s Railroad Theme and History. This 18-hole course sits on 28 acres and encompasses a variety of terrain including fields, hills, bottom lands, creeks and pine forests. It is the 3rd longest free-play course in South Carolina at 6,636 feet in length. Disc Golf Review ranks the Grand Central Station Disc Golf Course one of the Top 10 in the Nation and Top 5 in the Southeast.

Several manufacturing plants occupy the area contributing to the local economy and providing steady employment to Central, while reinforcing the Upstate’s reputation for fueling South Carolina’s leadership in a manufacturing rebirth. Central lays claim to being the disc golf capital of the area, hosting several disc golf tournaments and attracting players from several states and nations. Adding to the sports climate is the phenomenal expansion of quality sporting facilities developed by Southern Wesleyan University. Recently granted NCAA II status, SWU has constructed an Olympic level track, USTA standard tennis courts with stadium, new soccer and lacrosse fields and expanded golf driving range. The university makes all these facilities available to the public, a great addition to the community’s quality of life. Capitalizing on an opportunity to grow its downtown business presence and streetscape, the Town is applying for Main Street status and will be hiring a full time Director to lead the charge. Central is a community on the grow.

PENDLETON Just five minutes from Clemson, this town preserves its unique identity. Pendleton is rich in history and offers a picturesque hometown square that calls to the shopper and the browser to stop and visit the one of a kind shops, antique stores and enjoy lunch on the square. The entire Town is listed on the national Register of Historic Places. A walk through Pendleton takes one back in time to experience some stately antebellum mansions, historic churches and cemeteries, and more than 50 buildings predating 1850. The town was settled in 1790 by Scots-Irish farmers who laid out the picturesque village green around which it developed. In the center of the green is the oldest farmers hall in continuous 12

use in the United States. John C. Calhoun’s son-in-law Thomas Green Clemson proposed the development of a state agricultural college, now Clemson University, in the farmers hall. Another influence developed when wealthy plantation owners, aristocrats and statesmen flocked to the Upcountry to build summer homes in the more comfortable climate. Woodburn and Ashtabula are examples of these historic plantation homes and are open to the public for tours, weddings and receptions. Historic churches of the Pendleton area help to tell a part of the story of Pendleton. The Old Stone Church, a 1790s-era Presbyterian Church for citizens of Pendleton and outlying areas, was built of field stone by Revolutionary War veteran John Rusk.

The clapboard-style St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, built in 1822, has a cemetery that contains the graves of Mrs. John C. Calhoun, Thomas Green Clemson and Francis Burt, first governor of Nebraska. These historic sites make for interesting visits. Flanked by shops around the perimeter, the Town Square creates an ideal setting for festivals and events set up in the center. The annual Spring Jubilee features unique, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, live entertainment and local food vendors. The two day event consistently draws thousands to the town. The Fall Harvest Festival offers old fashioned games for the kids, crafts, entertainment and food. The newest feature, the Scarecrow event, offers nearly 100 scarecrows built by Townspeople and displayed all over town, making this another popular

event drawing thousands to this community of just 3,000. Pendleton is more than just history, shopping and festivals. The Town is enjoying some recent development and has completed a study-recommendation to preserve the character of the Town Square while at the same time enhancing its streetscape and business activity. Pendleton is also home to the main campus of Tri-County Technical College. This two year degree, diploma and certificate granting college, with over 5,000 students, is a major supplier of educated people with technical skills to employers throughout the Upstate. Pendleton, with all its offerings, is a great place to visit and a great place to live.

SIX MILE The rural Town of Six Mile, just a short drive north of Clemson, evidences the great pride of its residents. Fewer than 700 call Six Mile home, yet two to three times that number turnout for the hometown style events and activities that evoke the close and personal spirit of an earlier age. The Town is named from an old Indian legend about a Cateechee woman named Issaqueena. She fell in love with a man named Francis Allen, who had moved to Fort Cambridge. After overhearing her tribe elders planning an attack on the fort, Issaqueena traveled ninety-six miles to warn her lover. Along her journey, she named the paths, landmarks, and streams, many of which still hold today, including Issaqueena Falls, Twelve Mile River, Ninety Six, and Six Mile.

One of its popular events is the annual Old Fashioned Christmas held early in December with the businesses and residents lighting up the main street. The Annual Christmas Parade, held the first Saturday morning of December drives an amazing number of entries and provides the longest Christmas parade in the area, both in length and duration. With the advent of spring the May Issaqueena Festival fills up the Main Street with local entertainment, food vendors and craftsmen to attract people from the entire area. This is held the third Saturday of May each year. Another attraction of the Town is it’s setting near the mountains. Silhouetted just west of Town is Six Mile Mountain, a sight as you drive down the Main Street that causes you to catch your breath.

“What will life be like in Six Mile in 10-20 years and what investments will the Town be willing to make to meet the challenges that lie ahead? That is a question we must seriously consider if we are to meet the expectations of our residents.” – Mayor Roy Stoddard

While described as a Town with the spirit of an earlier age, it is by no means a sleepy old town. Quite the contrary. The Town Fathers recently and successfully worked to bring a community bank to Town. Our Bank, a division of Carolina Premier Bank, opened in the spring of 2013. Two years ago the Town also saw the opening of the new Farmers Market, housed in the former firehouse, and unquestionably the best Market facility around. The Market runs every Thursday from 4-7pm from May through October. Six Mile is proud to have its own Mexican Restaurant, Los Poblanos, a fixture since November 2012. In the past year, three new businesses have opened in Six Mile, a state of the art dentist office, a pet grooming salon and a craft and gift boutique. Not to be left out is the Community Recreation Center with state of the art baseball fields and running track with lights, bleachers, and food service stand. Six Mile now boasts the only radio station in the area, beginning transmission in the summer of 2015. The radio tower is visible from its place atop Six Mile Mountain.

Lisa Parker, Owner of Coat Tails, Grooming Her Dog Carlie

Another feature that makes Six Mile a standout and a source of pride for its residents is the A+ rated Six Mile Elementary School. This handsome architectural facility ranks at the top of Pickens County School District for its educational record. Close to the Town is the school district’s very best high school. Daniel High School is not only academically strong, it has also produced a consistent string of championship football teams and amazing high school marching and jazz bands. A badge of distinction and honor belongs to Six Mile which has more Medal of Honor recipients per capita than anywhere else in the nation. The town has three distinguished soldiers who gave their lives heroically, one in World War II, one in the Korean War, and one in the Vietnam War. In addition, a fourth recipient grew up in neighboring Liberty and spent time in Six Mile. All four are honored by a monument in front of Town Hall. Community pride shows itself all over this marvelous little town and rightfully so. 15

Weather & Seasons Clemson’s elevation is around 800 feet above sea level, rising to 1,000 feet just a few miles north and increasing to over 3,000 feet in the mountains along the border with North Carolina. Clemson’s temperate climate has four distinct seasons: Winter is relatively mild due to the mountain chain to the north that forms a shield. It is also the wettest season with 28% of the annual precipitation. Snow averaging 5.5 inches occurs in about 6 out of 10 winters. Spring introduces exciting color and temperatures that rise 16°. Summer is warm with July traditionally the warmest month of the year.

Education The Clemson Area Chamber service area is home to two school districts. Pickens County School District and Anderson County District Four, which encompasses Pendleton. The schools in these districts are distinguished by exceptionally high academic results and strong athletic performances. Pickens County School District as a whole ranks #1 or #2 in the state on a regular basis and is recognized throughout the nation as a “Quality School System. Both Pickens and Anderson School Districts are accredited

ANMED HEALTH PROVIDES PRIMARY, URGENT AND SPECIALTY CARE IN CLEMSON It’s a building year for AnMed Health Clemson. Breaking ground in 2015 on a major addition to its complex on Tiger Boulevard, the Anderson-based health system will open the doors in 2016 to a new home for CareConnect, an urgent care practice at the center of a complex that also houses family medicine, pediatric care, specialty care and lab and diagnostic services. With extended hours, walk-in appointments and onsite lab and X-ray, CareConnect offers convenience while also serving as a gateway to AnMed Health’s full range of physicians. If you already are a patient of an AnMed Health physician, the results of your CareConnect visit will be available automatically and electronically to your regular doctor. If you do not have a regular doctor, CareConnect can connect you to one of 50 physician practices in the AnMed Health network. Conditions appropriate for treatment at CareConnect include sprains, strains, broken bones, colds, flu and respiratory illness. Other practices in the complex include AnMed Health Clemson Family Medicine, AnMed Health Carolina Cardiology, AnMed Health Carolina Kids and AnMed Health Clemson Specialty Care, which includes cardiology, arrhythmia care, OB/GYN and gynecologic oncology. AnMed Health Clemson is located at 885 Tiger Boulevard/U.S. Highway 123. For more information, visit anmedhealth.org/careconnect.
