Welcome Welcome to our area from the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce representing Central, Clemson, Pendleton and Six Mile. The area is an exciting blend of quality University influence, growing specialty manufacturing, exceptional natural tourism, history, country living or in-town choices, big time college football, and a quality of life that respects Southern politeness and personal dignity. The four communities of the Clemson Area Chamber contribute unique aspects which respectfully harmonize to create an exciting whole. Cultural entertainment from Clemson and Southern Wesleyan Universities, athletic facilities supporting each community that would be the envy a city of 100,000, Farmers Markets, very competitive college and high school sports, restaurants a plenty in a wide range of offerings, top performing K-12 education along with leadership in training and education for the mechanical and engineering skills needed to fuel our growing manufacturing industry; tourism offerings that include mountains, waterfalls, the state’s largest lake, festivals almost every week and history spanning centuries. The Chamber contributes its part with Economic Forum, Clemsonfest (4th of July Celebration), Small Business Program, State of Community luncheons for each community, Welcome Days, greeting out-of-towners by pumping gas and wiping windshields, and a host of networking events connecting people and businesses. Like the community it serves, the Chamber has seen significant membership growth. The Chamber’s growth mirrors the vitality of the area, another reason that attracts and encourages people to call the area home. Those of you who are new or considering relocation to the area, Welcome. We are happy to have you. David Lane President/CEO

Clemson, with a population of over 15,000, is the largest of the four communities served by the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. This number is augmented ten months of the year by close to 20,000 plus students attending Clemson University. The City of Clemson and Clemson University work together in a uniquely cooperative way that has created a special character for the overall community. The successful partnership is evidenced by its selection as the outstanding Town and Gown community for each of the past five years by the International Town and Gown Association. 8

Clemson University influences the character of the Clemson living experience in ways that are embraced and supported by residents. Fall football weekends are a perfect example. Orange is seen everywhere. The crowds support the local merchants. The University and City police forces work together to direct and control the traffic the games generate. The cultural offerings at the Brooks Center with music, art exhibits, student theater productions, architectural projects and film screenings enhance the community living experience. Popular entertainers

are drawn to Littlejohn Coliseum because of the facility’s size and the combined population of University and area residents. Living in Clemson has its advantages. Clemson has many community events and activities such as: Clemsonfest (a Chamber and Community Independence Day celebration), the annual Christmas Parade each December, May’s Festival of Arts (a festival focused on exposing the community to various art mediums), Community Regatta on Lake Hartwell, USTA Southern

Level 1A Tennis Championship, and the Clemson Farmers Market. In addition, the University provides traditional events shared with the Community including: student-organized First Friday Parade in August, Rock the John, and Tigerama which kicks off Homecoming weekend. Clemson benefits from the natural beauty of the area, the mountains, waterfalls, lakes and scenic countryside. Add to these the abundance of recreational opportunities such as the bike trails found at Issaqueena Trail, to the City’s Central-Clemson

attract visitors and residents choosing to relocate. The free CAT bus service offers the second largest bus ridership in South Carolina, scenic beauty with waterfalls in abundance, mountains, large lakes, great for outdoor enthusiasts, hospitable four seasons, the vitality of the University scene and the genuine friendliness, and southern hospitality of the residents. All combine to make people want to return.

Central The Town of Central sits less than five miles from the City of Clemson, in between Clemson University and Southern Wesleyan University. The growth of both Universities is a contributing factor to Central’s recent growth. Additionally, the area around the Wal-Mart Center, located just south of town, has spurred commercial growth. This town of over 5,000 had a prominent role in the early development of the Pickens County area. Situated as the central point on the railroad between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina it developed as a railroad town that served as the prime terminal where engines could be fueled and changed. Hence, the name Central. The railroad continues to be a prominent feature of the Town. The Central Railroad Museum is a train

buff’s must see venue. Model trains and railroad history are preserved by the Central Railroad Club members who maintain the museum. Each spring the Central Area Business Council produces the Railroad Festival. The main street is blocked off for entertainment, food and vendor booths with a railroad theme woven into the proceedings. Railroad paraphernalia is sold by vendors. The Railroad Club sets up large display boards of operating model trains, the Railroad Museum opens its doors, and railroad entertainment is on the menu. Adding to the railroad lure is an original red caboose, mounted on a platform at the corner of E Main Street and Church Street, which has become a popular photo opportunity for visitors and train buffs.

Adding to the Railroad theme is the Grand Central Station Disc Golf Course. Owned and operated by the Town of Central, this course was designed around the Town’s Railroad Theme and History. This 18-hole course sits on 28 acres and encompasses a variety of terrain including fields, hills, bottom lands, creeks and pine forests. It is the 3rd longest free-play course in South Carolina at 6,636 feet in length. Disc Golf Review ranks the Grand Central Station Disc Golf Course one of the Top 10 in the Nation and in the Top 5 in the Southeast.

Railroading isn’t the only history. Much interesting local Central Clock Tower

history is chronicled at the Central Heritage Museum. Samuel Maverick Sr., who died in 1852, is reputed to have been the richest man in South Carolina at one time. He was a neighbor of John C. Calhoun, Senator, Orator and Andrew Jackson’s Vice President. Samuel Maverick’s son Samuel Maverick, Jr. moved to Texas. During the struggle to take Texas from Mexico, Maverick, Jr. stood with Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie at the Alamo. He was the only survivor having been sent to secure reinforcements for the embattled mission station before it fell to the Mexican Army. The younger Maverick was involved in the founding of San Antonio and the term “Maverick” was coined to describe one who did not brand his calves, an independent individual who did not go along with a group, which described this former South Carolinian. Another point of interest in this historic community is Collins Ole Town. Although only open by appointment, visiting this pre-depression-era grouping of buildings including country store, barbershop, little red school house and blacksmith shop provides a feeling for life as it was lived in the country

almost 100 years ago. For history dating over 150 years ago a visit to Freedoms Hill Church on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University brings visitors in touch with the story of a congregations founding in 1847 by Wesleyan Methodist Minister who opposed slavery in the turbulent years before the Civil War. Several manufacturing plants dot the area, contributing to the local economy and providing steady employment to Central, while reinforcing the Upstate’s reputation for fueling South Carolina’s leadership in a manufacturing rebirth. www.clemsonareachamber.org

Pendleton

Pendleton Town Square

Pendleton is rich in history and offers a picturesque hometown square that calls to the shopper and the browser to stop and visit the unique shops, antique stores and enjoy lunch on the square. The entire Town is listed on the national Register of Historic Places. A walk through Pendleton takes one back in time to experience some stately antebellum mansions, historic churches and cemeteries, and more than 50 buildings predating 1850. Settled in 1790 12

by Scots – Irish farmers who layed out the picturesque village green around which the Town developed. In the center of the green is the oldest farmers hall in continuous use in the United States. John C. Calhoun’s sonin-law Thomas Green Clemson proposed the development of a state agricultural college, now Clemson University, in the farmers hall. Another influence developed when wealthy plantation owners,

aristocrats and statesmen flocked to the Upcountry to build summer homes in the more comfortable climate. Woodburn and Ashtabula are examples of these historic plantation homes and are open to the public for tours, weddings and receptions. Historic churches of the Pendleton area help to tell a part of the story of Pendleton. The Old Stone Church, 1797, Presbyterian Church for citizens of Pendleton and outlying

areas, was built of field stone by Revolutionary War veteran John Rusk and the clapboard St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1822, whose cemetery contains the graves of Mrs. John C. Calhoun, Thomas Green Clemson and Francis Burt, first governor of Nebraska, make for interesting visits. Flanked by shops around the perimeter, the Town Square creates an ideal setting for festivals and events set up in the center. The annual Spring Jubilee features unique, oneof-a-kind arts and crafts, live entertainment, local food

vendors , consistently drawing thousands to the two day event. The Fall Harvest Festival offers old fashioned games for the kids, crafts, entertainment and food. The newest feature, the Scarecrow event, offers nearly 100 scarecrows built by Townspeople and displayed all over town, making this another popular event drawing thousands to this community of just 3,000. Pendleton is more than just history, shopping and festivals. The Town is enjoying some recent development

and has completed a studyrecommendation to preserve the character of the Town Square while at the same time enhancing its business activity. Pendleton is also home to the main campus of Tri-County Technical College. This two year degree, diploma and certificate granting college, with over 5,000 students, is a major supplier of educated technical skills talent to employers throughout the Upstate. Pendleton, with all it’s offerings, is a great place to visit and a great place to live.

Six Mile The rural Town of Six Mile, just a short drive north of Clemson, evidences the great pride of it’s residents. Fewer than 700 call Six Mile home, yet two to three times that number turnout for the hometown style events and activities that evoke the close and personal spirit of an earlier age. The Town is named from an old Indian legend about a Cateechee woman named Issaqueena. She fell in love with a man named Francis Allen, who had moved to Fort Cambridge. Issaqueena later overheard her tribe elders planning an attack on the fort and traveled ninety-six miles on foot to warn her lover. Along her journey, she named the paths, landmarks, and streams, many of which still hold today, including Issaqueena Falls, Ninety-Six, and Six Mile. One of its popular events is the annual Old Fashioned Christmas held early in December with the businesses and residents lighting up the main street. The Annual Christmas Parade, held the first Saturday morning of December drives an amazing number of entries and provides the longest Christmas parade in the area, both in length and duration. With the advent of spring the May Issaqueena Festival fills up the Main Street with local entertainment, food vendors and craftsmen to attract people from the entire area. This is held the third Saturday of May each year.

14

Another attraction of the Town is it’s setting near the mountains. Silhouetted just west of Town is Six Mile Mountain, a sight as you drive down the Main Street that causes you to catch your breath. While described as a Town with the spirit of an earlier age, it is by no means a sleepy old town. Quite the contrary. The Town Fathers recently and successfully worked to bring a community bank to Town. Our Bank, a division of Carolina Premier Bank, opened in the spring of 2013. Two years ago the Town also saw the opening of the new Farmers Market, housed in the former firehouse, and unquestionably the best Market facility around. The Market runs every Thursday from 4-7pm from May through October. Six Mile is proud to have its own Mexican Restaurant, Los Poblanos, a fixture since November 2012. Not to be left out is the Community Recreation Center with state of the art baseball fields and running track with lights, bleachers, and food service stand. A badge of distinction and honor belongs to Six Mile which has more Medal of Honor recipients per capita than anywhere else in the nation. The town has three distinguished soldiers who gave their lives heroically, one in World War II, one in the Korean War, and one in the Vietnam War. In addition, a fourth recipient grew up in neighboring Liberty and spent time in Six Mile. All four are honored by a monument in front of Town Hall. Community pride shows itself all over this marvelous little town and rightfully so.

Weather & Seasons Clemson in the Fall Photo courtesy of Flickr User Lauren Manning

Clemson’s elevation is around 800 feet above sea level, rising to 1,000 feet just a few miles north and increasing to over 3,000 feet in the mountains along the border with North Carolina. Clemson’s temperate climate has four distinct seasons: Winter is relatively mild due to the mountain chain to the north that forms a shield. It is also the wettest season with 28% of the annual precipitation. Snow averaging 5.5 inches occurs in about 6 out of 10 winters. Spring introduces exciting color and temperatures that rise 16°. Summers are warm with July traditionally the warmest month of the year. Fall is the fabulous season, lowest rainfall, lots of sunshine and temperature extremes practically non-existent. Education The Clemson Area Chamber service area is home to two school districts. Pickens County School District and Anderson County District Four, which encompasses Pendleton. The schools in these districts are distinguished by exceptionally high academic results and strong athletic performances. Pickens County School District as a whole ranks #1 or #2 in the state on a regular basis and is recognized throughout the nation as a “Quality School System. Both Pickens and Anderson School Districts are accredited through

the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). The influence of higher education certainly contributes to the success of the schools. Clemson University, Southern Wesleyan University and Tri-County Technical College attract an educated parent base, set quality standards for students pursuing higher education and by their very presence speak (to high school students) the importance of doing well academically.

Tri-County Technical College is a public two-year community and technical college serving Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties in South Carolina. The college system enrolls more than 9,000 students annually and offers more than 70 major fields of study, including computer technology, industrial electronics, mechatronics, nursing, and university transfer programs. Tri-County boasts the highest student success rate among two-year colleges in South Carolina and ranks in the 95th percentile nationally among community colleges whose students successfully transfer to four-year colleges and universities. A great investment of student and taxpayer dollars, Tri-County offers a three-toone return on every dollar spent on education and training, and graduates of its technical programs are in great demand for jobs by advanced manufacturing companies in the region. Founded in 1962 on land donated by Clemson University, Tri-County Technical College has grown from a technical education center with one building in Pendleton to a comprehensive community college with four campuses in its threecounty service area. The Anderson campus opened in 2007, soon followed by a campus in Easley and a site at the Hamilton Career Center in Seneca. In 2013, the College opened its Industrial Technology Center in Sandy Springs.

Tri-County Technical College is also home to the nationally-known Bridge to Clemson program, a unique freshman year program that blends the traditional academic experience at Tri-County with the social and cultural experiences of being a Clemson University student, as well as the Connect to College program, a “second chance opportunity for students who, for a variety of reasons, have not been successful in a traditional high school setting. Tri-County Technical College also plays an important role in preparing a technically skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing companies in the region. The College recently opened a stateof-the-art Industrial Technology Center in Sandy Springs, as well as a QuickJobs Training Center on its Anderson Campus located on Michelin Boulevard. Tuition is the lowest in the area and nearly eighty percent of students receive some form of free financial aid, including Pell Grants, Lottery Tuition Assistance, LIFE scholarships, and Foundation scholarships. In addition to academic programs, Tri-County offers continuing education training, career development, and personal interest courses to more than 13,000 people each year, including contract training for local industry, professional certifications, and workforce training.

Manufacturing

South Carolina has emerged as a leader in the resurgence of manufacturing in the United States. South Carolina’s Upstate has become a pivotal player in that resurgence. While several large manufacturing firms have captured the headlines in the Upstate, the number of small to medium firms is growing, expanding and steadily adding good paying jobs. The role of a trained workforce is key to the growth of manufacturing with its new focus on computer technology. The Upstate is well ahead of other areas in its training of skill sets thanks to the programs offered by Tri-County Technical College and Clemson University Engineering Department and Greenville Technical College. START WITH A GREAT EDUCATION, FINISH WITH AN E D G E Whether you’re looking to gain hands-on work-based learning experiences or to start here before transferring to another great college, Tri-County will give you the EDGE you need to succeed.

Small Business Support The Small Business Council was formed in January 2013 to provide a free, no strings attached, service of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce committed to helping and encouraging small business in the community. It is composed of professional business people volunteering to serve small business. The Chamber recognizes that strong small business are the #1 job creators, providing 70% of the nation’s new jobs, which in turn improves the economic well-being of the community. The Chamber’s mission is improving the economic well-being of the community. Supporting small business to survive, prosper and grow helps the local economy. As small businesses grow, jobs are

added which further improves the economy and contributes to a better quality of life. The services of the Small Business Council are open to any person or business. Chamber membership is not a pre-condition to receiving services. Whether one is exploring an entrepreneurial venture, already at the start-up stage or an established small business looking for financing to expand the business, the Small Business Council can be your connection to the help you need. The Small Business Council has partnered with the S.C. Small Business Development Center at Clemson University, Tri-County Technical College, and Planning and Codes Department of the City of Clemson to assist with services.

Clemson Downs Retirement Community

Orange

The GOLD STANDARD

for Upstate Living

The Gold Standard typically signifies excellence, and at Clemson Downs, we’ve achieved something better. For us, the Orange Standard is a show of pride for our town of Clemson, SC -- recently named a Top 25 Place to Retire by Forbes -- and for our Clemson University Tigers located just minutes down the road. The Orange Standard represents continuing care retirement living driven by our purpose-built facilities, best-in-class care, and a strong community of residents and care providers that builds upon our 35 year history serving the Clemson family. Come check out our expanding campus. Clemson Downs will add memory care and private room-based skilled nursing care in spring 2015. At Clemson Downs: We Are the Orange Standard.
