A LETTER FROM BRIAN ZIMMERMAN 100th Anniversary of Cleveland Metroparks July is a historic month for Cleveland Metroparks as it marks our 100-year anniversary. William Stinchcomb’s vision for an outer system of parks and boulevards became a reality on July 23, 1917. With the assistance of a three-member appointed Park Board, Cleveland Metropolitan Park District began its impressive expansion from 9,000 acres to now over 23,000, including a world-renowned zoo.

I am honored to continue evolving the Park District’s legacy of building connections throughout the community. With 18 reservations, 8 golf courses and 300+ miles of trails; the Emerald Necklace is nearly completed, providing communities throughout Northeast Ohio with greater access to the natural world. From our new beach house to trail openings and the rededication of several significant park attractions, this summer brings a wealth of opportunities to explore and be a part of Cleveland Metroparks history.

I am thrilled to celebrate this historical moment not only with the talented staff and ­volunteers who make the Park District the best in the nation, but with you, the visitors.

1931: Nature lecture in North Chagrin

ne hundred years ago this month, Cleveland Metroparks began to take shape. On July 23, 1917, Probate Judge Alexander Hadden appointed the first Board of Park Commissioners, and the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District began as Ohio’s very first metropolitan park district.

Join us as we celebrate Cleveland Metroparks anniversary throughout the month! There are many opportunities across the entire Park District, including these upcoming special events.

July 8 – A.B. Williams: A Forest Remembered This 60-acre beech-maple forest is where Cleveland Metroparks outdoor education began in 1930. In 1931, the first Trailside Museum was also located here. We’ll ­rededicate the area with re-enactors from the early years, and an adventure through this fascinating National Natural Landmark.

July 19 – Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial The rededication of the Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial, named for the first two park directors, will be held during the intermission of the Stinchcomb Summer Concert. Meet the Stinchcomb and Groth families as well as a “young” William Stinchcomb portrayed by John Kolar.

July 23 – Making Memories William Stinchcomb’s vision was to set aside park land for people to get away from the rigors of everyday life. On this Centennial anniversary, Cleveland Metroparks welcomes guests to enjoy a peaceful day in one of the 18 reservations, including the Zoo. Come alone, with friends or with family to quietly take in all that Cleveland Metroparks has to offer. While you’re here, take a photo and share on social media with #est1917 showing what memories you made on our 100th anniversary.

July 22 – Centennial Fireworks presented by KeyBank Celebrate the eve of Cleveland Metroparks 100th anniversary with a custom choreographed fireworks and music spectacular at Edgewater Park. Through the support of KeyBank the event will be free to the public

July 15 – A Day in the Life of Euclid Creek Cleveland Metroparks partners with the Friends of Euclid Creek and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to give visitors a closer look at Euclid Creek. Explore one of the original waterways of Cleveland Metroparks with some aquatic and plant

July 30 – Centennial Concert The third in a series of five Centennial Concerts takes us into the 1960s and 70s with rock music of the era. Join us at Hemlock Creek Picnic Area in the beautiful Bedford Reservation for some rock n’ roll music, see a surprise visitor from the Zoo, discover NatureTracks and try a fun craft from the era.

Top 10 Rare Bird Sightings The appearance of a rare bird brings much excitement to the birding and nature enthusiast community. From 290 species recorded, here are the top 10 rare birds of Cleveland Metroparks. Don’t forget to keep your binoculars or camera close by, in case YOU make a rare find!

4 Loggerhead Shrike

10 Northern Gannet

Gannets dive like spears from a hundred feet above the water for fish. This albatross-like Atlantic Ocean visitor was spotted foraging on Lake Erie. It is likely this individual followed the St. Lawrence River to Lake Ontario before arriving on the downtown Cleveland shoreline.

7 Western Tanager

Tanagers are some of the most beloved bird species for their striking red colors. Exceedingly rare in the eastern U.S., this showy songbird was the second spring record for the state of Ohio and the first record for Cleveland Metroparks in April 2015.

9 Western Kingbird

This Western kingbird, a species of the Great Plains and southwest, rode strong western winds to arrive in Cleveland Metroparks. The discovery of this large flycatcher was the first record for the Park System in October 2012.

White Ibis

A bird of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, imagine the surprise of finding this long-billed, long-legged wading bird walking around Rockcliff Springs in Rocky River Reservation! This exceptionally rare white ibis was the first record for Cleveland Metroparks in 1993.

Threatened and endangered in the northeast United States and Canada, the loggerhead shrike is the center of many conservation efforts. While loggerheads used to nest in the region, this species has not been recorded in Cleveland Metroparks for over 25 years until this individual appeared on April 6, 2017.

3 Brown Pelican

Never before has a mega rarity received more attention in Ohio than the “Cleveland Brown Pelican,” first found on June 25th, 2013 in Wendy Park.

Hundreds of birders visited Cleveland Metroparks to see this east coast celebrity, which had its own Twitter and Facebook page and T-shirt.

Black Guillemot By far one of the more eccentric birds to visit Ohio, this immature black guillemot, a seabird of far Arctic Canada, turned up in Lakefront Reservation Gordon Park Marina on November 8th, 1990.

1 Ivory Gull 8 Sabine’s Gull

This small, elegant gull with a forked tail migrates from the Arctic Circle to South America. The adult Sabine’s gull visited Lakefront Reservation, East 55th and East 72nd for a few days in November 2013.

5 Say’s Phoebe

The second record for Cleveland Metro­ parks, this salmon-pink-bellied flycatcher from the western U.S. put on a show for over 300 birders and photographers in a one week stay at the Rocky River riding ring in April 2017.

One of the rarest birds on earth, Ohio’s first record of this immaculate white gull is from Lakefront Reservation East 72nd Street on December 18, 1975. The “holy grail” of birds, ivory gulls live on the Arctic Circle, foraging on discarded polar bear kills.

September

The summer days of July arrive with insect serenades. During the day, annual cicadas burst into song as temperatures spike and meadows are filled with crickets’ and grasshoppers’ raspy calls.

After the sun sets, the chorus grows richer as katydids join, singing from high in the tree canopy. Bird songs still dominate the sounds of early morning in the deep woodlands, but as the nesting season winds down, warblers, tanagers, thrushes and other resident species go quiet. The very first of the year’s migrant shorebirds are heading southward, and blackbirds again begin to build in flocks.

The stunning colors of large rosemallow and pickerelweed flowers adorn the edges of wetlands and ponds. Milkweed – the host plant of the monarch butterfly – begins to explode its crown of pink flowers. By the end of July, early goldenrod, first of many goldenrods to bloom, becomes a harbinger of autumn as it adds touches of bright yellow to shady open places along parkways.

August begins the turning point of summer, and the first days of fall migration are underway. Flocks of blackbirds start to congregate in large numbers, bats begin to disperse from maternity colonies and the first southerly migration of shorebirds begin. Late summer marks the end of breeding season for most birds and the dawn chorus of songbirds such as warblers, flycatchers, tanagers and grosbeaks has quieted. August nights provide night adventurers opportunities to gaze at the shooting stars when the Perseid meteor shower peaks early in the month. August is the peak for dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly diversity. Skimmers, darners, bluets, spreadwings, baskettails, saddlebags and other unique odonates lay eggs in ponds and lakes. The rich soil nutrients found in floodplain forests allow some of the tallest wildflowers in Cleveland Metroparks to thrive.

As August comes to a close, salamander larvae begin their transition from the water to land, completing their mating cycle for the year.

September ushers in the end of summer, bringing cooler night temperatures and the first fall colors. This is one of the most exciting months for birding in Cleveland Metroparks as fall migration swings into full gear. A visit to Huntington or Lakefront Reservations during strong northern gales offers a chance to observe the initial large movements of waterfowl, terns, gulls, and, on a red-letter day, a jaeger. September’s migration mayhem can offer birders the chance to see over 100 species in one day.

The insect world is still abuzz in September as monarch migration begins. Large, bright orange and black butterflies make an astounding migration south to Mexico. On a warm day with north winds, visit Wendy Park, Edgewater, Huntington, Euclid Creek or Wildwood Reservations to witness hundreds to thousands of monarchs arrive on U.S. ground.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS - THE LAST THREE DECADES

1980s

In 1980, Lou Tsipis became Executive Director, and in 1982 the Administrative Offices were moved from downtown Cleveland to the former Zoo administration building on Fulton Parkway.

1984 – A new nature center opened in North Chagrin Reservation next to the Sunset Pond Wildlife Refuge; the pond was enlarged to include the new Sanctuary Marsh and boardwalk.

1986 – The City of Cleveland leased Garfield Park to Cleveland Metroparks. Dozens of volunteers worked with Cleveland Metroparks staff to renovate the reservation.

1988 – Vern Hartenburg began his tenure as Cleveland Metroparks director. He organized the mission of the Park into three pillars: Conservation, Education and Recreation.

1990s

In the 1990s, Cleveland ­ etroparks acquired parts of the old towpath and canal lands M just north of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

1992 – The much anticipated RainForest opened and became an immediate popular destination.

1993 – The City of Cleveland leased Brookside Park to Cleveland Metroparks. A new baseball diamond, soccer field and playground were added to this historic park.

1997 – A handful of citizens joined together to offer a counter proposal to save, restore and return this land to nature and children of the future. They became the West Creek Preservation Committee.

1999 – Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation opened along with the CanalWay Center. Youth Outdoors was created to provide outdoor adventure recreation experiences for urban youth from ages 8 to 18 years.

2000s

In 2001, a new park based at the Great Falls of Tinker’s Creek within Bedford Reservation focused on early industries. This park featured an old stone railroad viaduct built in the early 1850s. Wooden walkways and a new parking lot made the new Viaduct Park accessible, while interpretive signage explained the significance of the several mills that operated here in decades past.

2006 – Cleveland Metroparks took over development and management of the property that became WestCreek Reservation.

2010 – Brian Zimmerman became the 6th executive director of Cleveland Metroparks.

KeyBank ZooKeys Make Their Nostalgic Return

s Cleveland Metroparks celebrates this historic centennial year, ZooKeys (now KeyBank ZooKeys) have made a return thanks to the partnership between Cleveland Metroparks and KeyBank.

ZooKeys debuted at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in the 1960s and provided a world of experiences and connections for families who, with the turn of a key, could learn about their favorite animal.

Cleveland Metroparks has partnered with KeyBank this centennial year to provide communities, neighborhoods and residents throughout Northeast Ohio with new opportunities to connect with Cleveland Metroparks. The return of ZooKeys is not only a celebration of the past, but a connection to the future.

The Zoo has been a part of Cleveland Metroparks history since the 1970s, providing a world of experiences in one destination for guests. Forty years since, Cleveland Metroparks has continued this mission as well as providing educational opportunities.

Staying true to its original intent, the two dozen plus designated boxes allow guests to insert a customized KeyBank ZooKey to unlock an exclusive, educational message specific to each animal. In addition, there is a message about the Zoo’s conservation efforts for each animal represented.

Seneca and Washington Junior Golf Camps

These five-day camps for young golfers will include instruction, etiquette, rules, playing and on-course experiences. Juniors should bring a packed lunch.

Fee: $200 for camp. Optional lunch provided through the Back 9 Grill at Seneca for additional $25/week. Camp runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. with extended care is available for children arriving at 8 a.m. and staying until 5 p.m. A fee of $25 covers extended care for the entire week.

Huntington Reservation was one of the original nine Cleveland Metroparks Reservations. Join us for a history walk along the beach where we’ll learn about the area and look back at some old-fashioned fun on the shores of Lake Erie.

Join us at Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial with friends, family, and great music to celebrate founder William Stinchcomb’s vision.
