CLEMENT SUNG INTERN ARCHITECTECT / DESIGNER

I am a recent graduate of the University of Toronto’s M. Arch program. Throughout this time, I have pursued opportunities to emphasize playfulness and thoughtfulness in humanistic design that strives to remain relevant in this evolving future.

Through sensitivity and celebration, I seek to merge preservation with invention to reflect the fact that architecture is designed by humans and made for humans.

I hope this selection of works may showcase my abilities in architectural representation and convey my enthusiasm to broaden my scope in architecture.

In early September 2021, New York was submerged underwater when Hurricane Ida brought violent rainfall. Due to the abundance of paved asphalt replacing natural earth surfaces, New York lacks a proper drainage system to deal with flooding; and unfortunately, by 2100 the water surrounding New York will rise and destroy 40 000 acres worth of land, public amenities, healthcare facilities, energy plants, parks, and subway infrastructure. This is the new reality of New York.

The proposed Climatorium, New Heights, located right at the estimated base flood elevation of 13 feet, represents what New York must face. Faced with the datum of the flood elevation, the Climatorium contextualizes New York’s theme of inhabiting elevated planes, most notably the elevated subway lines, FDR Drive, and its multitude of bridges that connect Manhattan to rest of New York. Therefore, at the edge of a new reality, the Climatorium becomes an icon of climate change

acceptance where a new datum is established through a podium, exceeding the flood elevation.

This podium forms the base of all permanent programming, and two towers are placed on top of it, piercing the horizontal datum.

The towers are then reconnected with a higher datum that acts as a skybridge and provides views that look out above the roofs of the Seaport District buildings towards the East River and across the bridge to Brooklyn.

ground floor serves as an impermanent community flex space, consisting of an adaptable market hall to support small local businesses, park and play spaces that cater towards the children in nearby schools, and a public plaza that allows for congregation and peaceful demonstrations in a time where protests are the easiest way to receive attention for injustices.

Above the podium sits an elevated park that provides a space of respite and mitigates the heat island

effect in an asphalt-dense New York.

With the entire building clad in locally reclaimed brick across New York, the Climatorium serves as a continuation of the elevated datums and the adjacent seaport district and becomes a new hub that stands as a leading precedent for future architecture in New York that must adapt to climate change.

02 MUSEUM OF MUSEUMS JEJU-DO, SOUTH KOREA PROF. PETROS BABASIKAS THESIS RESEARCH PROJECT WINTER 2022 - SPRING 2023

Is there a reality where consumption-driven tourists and the inhabitants of Jeju-do can coexist on a land that both groups consume for opposite uses?

This thesis critiques the tourism industry in Jejudo, South Korea, through its unique definition and phenomenon of the museum. A Jeju museum merely requires the display of 100 objects, and I aim to stretch this definition to examine the experience and consumption of landscapes through the juxtaposition of the Jeju museum and traditional Jeju culture.

Initial Research Jeju-do was formed from volcanic activity, and the natural processes formed lush ecosystems with distinct species. This “naturalness” became sought after for its ecological tourism, and today 15 million tourists visit Jeju to experience its natural beauty and escape city life, forming a ratio of 25 tourists to 1 inhabitant.

However, ecological tourism is unable to maximize profits; landmarks and trails are free to hike.

Therefore, a new form of tourism is created based on consumption and capitalism. Jeju has been building museums across its landscape, and the government provides incentives to construct these museums: •100 themed items, storage, offices, and a thermostat are the mere requirements to qualify as a museum.

•the government subsidizes a part of the museum costs and the owner receives tax benefits.

Compare these requirements to the requirements by the International Council of Museums: •A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets, and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage.

Jeju misappropriates the use of the term museum, here, it is all for profit, everything is entirely tangible, and there is little to nothing about heritage.

Cataloguing all museums across Jeju reveals a hyper-saturated simulation taking over the island. The museums are instances of distortion, parasites that proudly display artifacts with no relation to Jeju and its culture, that take away from the livelihood of Jeju’s inhabitants. And when the museum has economically failed? The owner withdraws but the building remains, leaving abandoned sites, scars of capitalism, across the landscape.

Site The chosen thesis site is Alddreu Airfield due to its layers of histories embedded with stories of its inhabitants.

It started as a Japanese airbase masked as farmland, then after the war it was transformed into actual farmland, then the farmers were forcefully evicted to turn the site into a museum and park, but the plans abruptly stopped and farmers illegally resettled.

Military fragments left behind can still be seen, and the site contains 19 concrete airplane hangars which the farmers largely ignore.

These hangars, highlighted in red, are the only infrastructure the farmers use as storage since they are at risk of being evicted due to their illegal resettlement. However, the lax museum requirements to create distorted museums that take away precious farmland can in turn be flipped and used as a loophole to legalize the farmers.

If Alddreu Airfield becomes an open-air museum, the farming can be legitimized as labour that is “essential for museum operations.”

And the 100 objects necessary to become a museum will consist of objects, each of the 100 already existing museums, as a playful critique of Jeju that raises awareness of the troubles museums pose to Jeju locals, and also doubles as a fantastical primer of the island for tourists. But in this case the profits actually return to the locals rather than money-hungry developers.

This duality continues to the plane hangars as well. The hangars act both as wings of the museum, providing sheltered exhibition spaces for tourists, but also as useful infrastructure that the farmers have been lacking. Having these spaces visited and used by both tourists and farmers can potentially create moments of confusion and curiosity as they learn to exist together on the site. So while presenting this critique of tourism, the site can be integrated back into both the society and ecology of Jeju. airplane hangars to repurpose

03 UNDER-UNDERDEVELOPMENT SCARBOROUGH, CANADA PROF. JON CUMMINGS DESIGN STUDIO III WINTER 2021

With the new Eglinton Crosstown LRT to open in the near future, Eglinton Avenue will be shaped into one of the longest transit corridors in Canada.

However, the construction of transit-oriented developments increases unaffordability and land value inflation, and Toronto’s urban policies raise questions on their environmental and social impacts, the main point being sustainable urban living. How can the Eglinton corridor become an example of urbanism that is both socially and environmentally resilient as well as spatially just?

Under-Underdevelopment is sited on the north side Kennedy Station, where mapping research revealed a correlation between the number of recent immigrants, median household income, and dwellings in need of repairs. Further site analysis shows the surrounding area lacks sufficient community amenities, and Kennedy Station’s infrastructure creates a road bridge that is vehicular oriented and hinders pedestrian circulation, creating an unsafe walking experience. There is an existing plan by Housing Now to build a new mid-rise for social housing but unfortunately the plan has been consistently delayed, leaving the site as an unused transit parking lot.

Under-Underdevelopment takes the dangerous conditions of the wide road bridge, train tracks, and hydro corridor, spaces pedestrians avoid, and creates a new community hub through affordable housing and a community center. The existing high-rise is renovated and extended to provide greater density near the transit hub, and mimics the curved bridge ground condition through the ground floor retail spaces to extend the sidewalk and create more human traffic.

A mixture of different unit sizes is created from the skip-stop circulation to provide housing for a wide range of family incomes.

Underneath the bridge becomes parking for the high-rise and community center users, and Kennedy Go Station is extended underneath the bridge to provide easy access for residents north of the bridge, something they were lacking.

Winter Stations is an international design competition held in Toronto, Canada.

Participants are tasked with designing winter installations across Woodbine Beach.

In commemoration of COVID-19, the 2022 theme for Winter Stations is Resilience; the ability to withstand and recover from adversity.

True to the 2022 theme of resilience, the design is based on the emotions felt throughout quarantine and isolation. Playing with the idea of reflection, mirrored walls are utilized to cast visitors as the subjects of the bright red pavilion, titled Introspection.

The trellis roof allows sunlight to illuminate the interior and its visitors while the sounds of wind whistle by.

The visitor is left facing their own reflection in a setting of pondering and introspection of one’s own emotional resilience.

From afar, Introspection appears suspended on the beach horizon.

Behaving like a visual constant in the wild, Introspection is a reminder that no matter what the whirlwinds of life may bring, it endures it all and remains resilient to adversity.

05 EARTH SONG BRANTFORD, CANADA PROF. TEI CARPENTER DESIGN STUDIO II SPRING 2021

The goal of the Haudenosaunee Woodland Cultural center is to create a venue that facilitates the sharing of the profound knowledge embedded in the Haudenosaunee Indigenous civilization. This first involves the fostering of new connections and understanding of their culture, traditions, and ancestral territories.

The project commenced with an exploration of Indigenous musical instruments, namely the water drum and turtle rattle, resulting in a fascination of how natural processes can create sound. This led to a precedent experiment of designing wind pipes, an element in Haudenosaunee music, to harness sound. Earth Song then takes the wind pipes of the experiment and contextualizes them into a cultural center with ten exhibition spaces, using copper as the main material, the same material that the Haudenosaunee often use for tools and craft.

Following the contours and promenade, the visitor can experience the individual exhibition pipes as they pierce through the ground, inviting interaction between them before leading to the cluster of pipes, the main hall. Going underground leads the visitor to a second level of interaction where the pipes become spotlights, highlighting the exhibitions and creating a series of oculi that look towards the sky. As Earth Song ages, the shiny copper will slowly oxide into a warm turquoise patina, re-enhancing its ties to the natural territories.
