Bean Casserole Preparation:

Step 1: Place rack in middle of oven; preheat oven to 375°. Working in batches, cook 2 lb. green beans in a large pot of boiling salted water until bright green and halfway to tenderness, about 3 minutes per batch. Drain and let cool; trim stem ends.

Step 2: Heat 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Cook ½ lb. crimini mushrooms, sliced, without stirring, until golden brown underneath, about 2 minutes. Toss and continue to cook, tossing occasionally, until browned on both sides, about 3 minutes more. Add 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter and 2 large thyme sprigs to pan. Cook, tossing occasionally, until butter browns and mushrooms are dark brown and very tender, about 4 minutes longer. Season with kosher salt and transfer to a plate. Repeat with 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, salt, and remaining 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, ½ lb. crimini mushrooms, sliced, and 2 large thyme sprigs.

Step 3: Melt remaining 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter in a large saucepan over medium-low. Whisk in 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour and cook, whisking occasionally, until roux is golden brown and smells mildly nutty, about 4 minutes. Whisk in 1¼ cups whole milk and 1 cup heavy cream. Increase heat and bring to a simmer, whisking often, and cook until béchamel sauce is thick and bubbling, about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and whisk in 4 garlic cloves, finely grated, and ½ cup grated Parmesan; season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

Step 4: Arrange green beans and mushrooms in a 2-qt. baking dish. Pour sauce over bean mixture (it may not look like enough, but it will get saucier as it bakes). Cover tightly with foil and bake until sauce is bubbling, 25–30 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake until casserole is lightly browned on top and around the edges, 15–20 minutes longer. Top with ¾ cup French’s fried onions and continue to bake just until onions are slightly darker and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Let sit 10 minutes to set before serving.

What Recession? Holiday Spending Predicted To Defy Economic Challenges Written by: Gary Drenik, Forbes With ongoing buzz around the state of the global economy, rising inflation, whispers of recession and memories of 2022’s winter supply chain issues, many eyes are laser-focused on this year’s holiday shopping outlook. Reports of strong consumer confidence despite the higher cost of living have many experts wondering whether the holiday shopping season will yield a positive boost for retailers or lackluster results.

In advance of this, I spoke with Jay Jaffin, chief marketing officer at Blackhawk Network (BHN), a global payments technology company that partners with thousands of Fortune 500 brands, private businesses, nonprofits and other organizations to strengthen relationships between brands and their customers, employees, and partners. By transforming transactions into connections, BHN keeps close tabs on payment and shopping trends—including deep, datadriven insights.

Gary Drenik: How will the economy impact holiday shopping this year given current levels of inflation and talks of a potential recession? Will this represent a shift from last year?

Jay Jaffin: Despite the roller coaster of economic pressures consumers experienced this year, there are indicators that the US economy is strengthening, and consumer confidence is growing. To understand how shoppers are planning to spend in the weeks to come, we conducted research that found consumers aren’t going to shy away from purchases during what marketers call the “Golden Quarter” (essentially Q4). And while spending will remain relatively flat compared to last year, shoppers plan to be strategic in where, when, and how they spend their dollars.

Based on our research and partner insights, we expect people to shop via multiple channels like in-store, online and in-app as they seek out the right gifts at the right prices. Among those channels, we anticipate an uptick in online spending. A separate study from Prosper Insights & Analytics supports this forecast, with respondents reportedly planning to spend more than half their time shopping online this year.

Drenik: Will marketers be approaching this holiday differently from last year?

Jaffin: People aren’t going to be shopping as early this year as they did in 2022; with five shopping weekends between Black Friday and Christmas this year and supply chain issues mostly resolved, consumers can be more deliberate in their purchases during the elongated winter holiday shopping season. This means people will be actively seeking out promotions and deals that best suit their shopping list—and their budget—and marketers must respond and plan ahead accordingly.

Research from a recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey found that this holiday season, nearly half of shoppers will be looking for sales more often, more than one third will be comparative shopping online more often, about one third will be using coupons more often and one quarter will be buying more practical gifts or necessities as gifts. Interestingly, respondents to that survey reported they will not be skipping or bundling gifts to save money (some even reported they will be refraining from buying new holiday decorations this year so they can save money for gifts).

Smart marketers will understand these saving tactics and create more personalized and tailored promotions to better resonate at a 1:1 level. This could include promotions like those that offer rewards (as opposed to one-time discounts) and encourage future brand engagements. For instance, if shoppers buy a gift card for a loved one as part of a certain promotion, that retailer could reward that purchase with a gift card for the buyer to redeem in the future.

It will also be important to offer promotions across channels as people are going to be seeking out deals wherever they prefer to shop. Gen-Z, for instance, is the first digital-native generation so digital promotions are more likely to resonate; this helps marketers quickly reinforce shopping decisions and potentially drive future loyalty, engagement and (hopefully) sales via rewards and incentives. As a bonus, rewardbased promotions make better use of marketers’ budgets than one and done discounts because the ongoing engagements provide opportunities to interact with shoppers long after the holiday shopping season is over.

Drenik: What will be the top gifting verticals this year? And what will be the go-to gift for shoppers?

Jaffin: This year’s most popular gift will be the same as it’s been for nearly two decades: gift cards. According to a recent Prosper Insights & Analytics survey, more than half of consumers want gift cards this year—far and away the most popular choice—and shoppers are clearly in tune with this sentiment.

According to our research respondents plan to spend 43% of their total 2023 holiday budget on gift cards (up from 37% last year) and gift card load values are also expected to increase. Physical and digital gift cards are both popular, as are options that offer recipients optimal flexibility like prepaid cards and multi-branded cards redeemable at several different brands.

Consumers will be focusing on gifting versatility in terms of seeking out gifts that satisfy recipients’ wants and needs. Gift cards foot the bill for this strategy, and they also ensure the money people spend on gifts actually gets used; our research found that 65% of respondents feel gift cards are better alternatives to physical gifts the recipient may not want or use.

Drenik: How will people be paying for gifts this holiday season?

Jaffin: The majority of payments will still be comprised of traditional methods (e.g., debit, credit cards), but rising consumer credit card debt (which now tops $1T) will drive further proliferation of the ecosystem of secondary payment methods. This means shoppers will leverage loyalty points, gift cards, PayPal, Venmo and buy-now-pay-later (BNPL)—particularly younger generations.

Today’s shoppers are clever and in addition to seeking out deals and rewards for their purchases, they are going to be exploring delivery methods that lower costs such as free shipping or digital delivery (i.e., sending a gift card via email or text).

Drenik: With many organizations experiencing layoffs, budget reductions and sales impacted by the economy, should they offer employee gifts this year? If so, which ones?

Jaffin: While the US is experiencing record-low unemployment rates, it's crucial for employers to understand that employment figures alone don't reflect employee engagement, loyalty, or productivity. Inflation is rising, and the sudden end of childcare funding and the impending return of student loan payments are compounding financial strain on many households. More than ever, employers shouldn’t underestimate the impact of holiday rewards and recognition in fostering a motivated and committed workforce yearround.

Sadly, in 2022, 45% of Americans surveyed said they did not receive a holiday gift from their employers, and our research found that most Americans also do not expect to receive a holiday gift from their employer this year. This is a huge, missed opportunity, as threequarters of employees say a holiday gift would make them valued, and energized for the start of the new year. Holiday gifts also prevent attrition, as more than a quarter of respondents said they would consider leaving their job if they didn’t receive a holiday gift.

Half of employees surveyed think companies are bad gifters, and if given the choice, 65% of employees would rather receive a gift card from their employers than any other gift— which is great news for employers, as gift cards can be purchased in different denominations and digitally delivered (quickly) to employees in different working locations (e.g., hybrid, remote). They also empower your employees to treat themselves or buy something they need depending on their personal preferences and financial situation.

Drenik: Thank you so much, Jay, for sharing these insights and data. It sounds like this winter holiday shopping season will be ripe with opportunities for brands to drive revenue while also ensuring shoppers stick to (and optimize) their budgets. Whether you’re a retailer, marketer, employer or simply reading this from the lens of an American shopper, this intel can help everyone thoughtfully approach the holiday shopping season and ensure holiday gifts hit their mark—to the benefit of the economy.

Q&A with Lindsay Lucas When did LLI begin?

Lindsay Laine Interiors (LLI) began as Lindsay Laine, the shop. Many people assume my last name is Laine but that’s not so. My Mom’s name is Elaine, and people have always called her Lainie; thus we called us Lindsay Laine. She is a talented artist. She designs floral creations, she paints landscapes as well as furniture, she handcrafts pillows and table linens, she can do it all! About twenty years ago, we noticed a new shopping plaza being built on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford, called Spring House Commons. I took a peek at what was available and decided to lease their smallest space. Our little home goods shop, called Lindsay Laine had its debut. It was filled with my Mom's creations; small furnishings, floral pieces, lighting, textiles, tabletop pieces, and gifts. People would ask us to bring the pieces they purchased from our shop into their homes and create new looks in their homes.

Fast forward seventeen years and I found myself at a crossroads. I loved most of my house, but it needed major updates. I was torn between looking for a new house; one that fit my family just right in terms of style, function, and location, or renovate. We looked around for a new house, but nothing seemed to fit. The decision was made to stay in our house and commit to the renovation. We gutted the back half of our 1940 stone Tudor. The dining room became the kitchen, the kitchen the pantry, the four-season room the garden room, and the pantry became the cleaning closet.

Fast forward three years. I was well into my career in IT but came across someone new to the area. She didn't quite feel at home in her new house. All I had to recommend myself was the transformation I had done to my own home. She took a chance on me and became my first Lindsay Laine Interiors’ client.

I assembled a team, came up with the design, and we successfully renovated two major areas in her home. We created a new full basement with kitchen, media room, full bathroom, and bedroom. The kitchen on the main floor will forever be known as my "blue kitchen”. It was my first kitchen renovation and I was giddy at every turn. Once we wrapped up this project I had caught the bug! My heart never felt so full.

Every morning, since my own renovation, as I enter my kitchen to make coffee and my son's lunch, I am immediately struck by the warm feeling of gratitude and happiness for this space. It feels just like me. It never gets old. It offers such comfort. This is the very same feeling I want to create for each of my clients at Lindsay Laine Interiors.

Who makes up the team at LLI? Lindsay Laine is comprised of a team of rockstars. Kristin came into the group to handle digital content, branding, and social media. She does all that and now runs in lockstep with Lindsay in all things operations and design. Her superpowers have no end. Renee, leads projects like an enthusiastic, detail-driven camp counselor with grace and ease, and clipboard in hand. She is the sweet and talented, detail maven. Lizzi is pure magic. There is no project she cannot implement. She sources and designs spaces that make our client’s hearts skip a beat. Callie is our digital designer who makes all our dreams come true. She captures the spirit of our design and brings it to life in a most dramatic way. Lainie is the root of all things good. She heads up special projects. She has vision and creativity like none other. We would be not much more than a high tech creativity shop if it were not for our LLI Trades Team. These highly skilled, good hearted people are experts in their fields. They advise, follow through with integrity, and help us deliver the dream. I (Lindsay) am the one who finds myself in a state of perpetual gratitude for the team that brings the LLI dreams to life and the families who invite us into their homes.

Why a team vs working independently?

I worked independently my first couple of years. It went well and I grew the business over that period of time. After two years LLI was no longer my side hustle and I was able to make it my primary career. I chose to scale into a team model because everyone on my team has a certain skill(s) that I don’t have. We complement each other. We overlap in some areas and we specialize in others. Together we are a stronger service delivery solution our clients.

What style is LLI known for?

We are most known for our organic, earthy, comfy, luxe, layered vibe. Core to our design process is sharing some head and heart space with our clients so we can get a deeper understanding of what it is they are hoping for. We arrive with a blank slate to sketch from and without any agenda or preconceived goals. The goal is to step into our clients’ world and put our little spin on it as we reimagine their home aligned with their hearts.

What sets apart the client experience with LLI? Coming from a technology background, I learned how tech can elevate the mission of a business and enhance the client experience. I also learned how important process is to delivering seamless, successful services. One of my favorite uses of technology is our ability to create a digital environment which accurately mimics the spaces in our clients’ homes. We convey our vision with 3-D modeling in a photo realistic way. This enables our clients to review the best possibilities and make well-informed decisions. When our clients step into their finished renovation they marvel at how exact their completed space mirrors the model. At that point we know the goal has been accomplished. Each person you experience at LLI truly desires to deliver their best. We look out for our clients like they are our family. We love how with each new home we step into, it feels as though our family grew just a little bit more.
