A Note From The Director A TRULY
FAIR LADY
My Fair Lady is called the quintessential musical. But why do we call it that? Why do you think some of the themes are still acceptable? How can we make it better?
These are all questions I believe were explored in the most recent Broadway revival, which helped make Eliza a bit stronger and more developed. For me, this was inspiring.
My Fair Lady has a long history of being performed with an assertive Eliza, but not necessarily one that takes control of her own path. What would happen if Eliza had more power? What would happen if Eliza lived today? These are all questions I asked myself when preparing to direct My Fair Lady a second time.
I previously directed My Fair Lady for Clear Space in 2012. The 2012 production was very traditional, and Clear Space maintained the view of Eliza we were used to seeing frim the original Broadway production. But we now live in 2024 when there’s a lot of change happening, especially for women. It’s time for Eliza to be stronger and change her destiny.
During Women’s History Month, it’s the perfect time to watch a strong female character soar.
Enjoy the show!
