A MESSAGE FROM CLEAN LAKES ALLIANCE I

t’s perhaps a little-known

fact that 48 percent, or

28 miles, of all the land around our five big lakes is publically owned. What that means is our lakes are truly OUR lakes—and it’s our job to protect them in every way possible.

Since 2010, Clean Lakes Alliance has operated with the simple motto, “Healthy Lakes.

Healthy Community.” Eight years later, we still believe this as we partner with businesses, farmers, elected officials, and everybody else who has a passion for clean and healthy water.

In this third issue of the Greater Madison Lake Guide, we’ve added more of what you’ve asked for— information on what causes problems in our lakes, and what you can do in your everyday lives to help with the solution. We’ve also added more resources on businesses, activities, and events associated with our lakes. Whether you’re looking for a place to eat and catch a sunset drink, rent a kayak, or finally try stand-up paddleboarding, this Lake Guide is filled with resources and information to help you plan your next lake visit.

Additionally, you’ll find information inside from our State of the Lakes Annual Report. This comprehensive report dives into the science of our five lakes over the past year, as well as the actions we’ve taken and need to continue to take to improve water health and clarity.

Other stories in the guide that we hope you enjoy are “Mad-City Ski Team Shares Its Towering Talent” and “Get on Board with SUP Yoga.”

We hope you’ll use this guide as a way to navigate our community’s most important asset. If you’re planning a trip to one of our 25 beaches, be sure to visit lakeforecast.org to check water conditions at one of the 70 points our volunteers monitor on a weekly basis from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Finally, we invite you to help us continue funding important lake improvement, education, and monitoring programs by becoming a Friend of Clean Lakes. Donations start at just $35 and information can be found in the center fold of the guide. Our lakes make Madison unique, and if we join together, we can improve the health of these public assets for years to come.

Fish Camp County Park, located on the northwest shore of Lake Kegonsa, was a place for commercial carp fishing for many years. REIMAGINING OUR LAKESIDE

re you aware that 48 percent

of the lakeshore and all of

our five lakes are publicly owned? The lakes are truly OURS! With about 60 miles of total shoreline on our lakes, we’re talking about 28 miles or (the distance from Madison to Fort Atkinson) that’s public. You might also be surprised to know we have 25 public beaches and swim areas—each offering an opportunity to access and enjoy our beautiful lakes.

In 2017, Clean Lakes Alliance, in partnership with Madison Community Foundation and City of Madison Parks Department, launched a Back to the Beach initiative to foster a renewed focus on Greater Madison’s public lakeaccess points. The initiative kicked off with an all-ages sandcastle building event at Olbrich Park Beach—part of our annual Loop the Lake family bike ride around Lake Monona—and a My Favorite Lake youth art competition.

However, the largest and perhaps most important part of the beach initiative tapped into the community’s creativity. The Reimagining Warner Beach conceptual design contest, with $15,000 in prize money, asked amateur and professional designers to envision an improved Warner Beach on Lake Mendota’s east shore.

“We have the best farmers’ market, we have a world-class university, we’re one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, but our beaches fall far behind the rest of Madison’s gems,” said Clean Lakes Alliance Executive Director James Tye. “We know residents deserve and demand better lake parks and beaches, and the Madison Community Foundation grant gives us the jumpstart we need.”

Twenty-eight design entries offered imaginative ideas for improving water quality, sustainability, access, and placemaking. The top three winners were recognized at Clean Lakes Alliance’s Save Our Lakes Community Breakfast on May 2. This first-of-itskind design contest is the first step in rethinking how we take full advantage of ALL our lakeside spaces.

“The history, importance, and potential of Warner Park Beach to Madison’s Northeast side is why we wanted to invest in the Back to the Beach program,” said Madison Community Foundation President Bob Sorge. “With our history of investing in successful projects like the Monona Terrace and Overture Center, we hope the winning design for Warner Park Beach will add another great public asset to our community.”

As a final component of Back to the Beach, all 25 public beaches and lakeside parks are currently being inventoried. This effort will identify opportunities and recommended best practices specific to each site. Clean Lakes Alliance will ask the community what they like best about their favorite neighborhood beaches, and also what they feel is most lacking. Public input will be combined with what comes out of the inventory to help guide future budgeting, master planning, and improvement work. Similar reimagining efforts are currently underway at James Madison Park as well as the Nolen Waterfront area near Law Park.

“The beaches at Madison’s parks are some of our most treasured assets—but we know they can be much better," said Madison Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp. “Public-private partnerships like Clean Lakes Alliance’s Reimagining Warner Beach contest will help create the important community input we need to invest in our beaches and truly make them a Madison destination for all residents and visitors.”

Q. What’s your favorite lake memory from your youth and why is it important to you still today?

It’s tough to nail down one specific lake memory from my youth, as

there are so many to choose from. Whether it's the memories of nights

and days working as a dock hand for the Green Lantern Restaurant, running the bait shop and renting boats for the Marina (long since gone), or the countless times hanging out and skiing with friends on the hot days of summer school break. This much I can say, my time on Lake Waubesa influenced my decision to stay in Madison and attend the UW, and upon graduating it influenced my decision to find work in the city so I could stay close to the water. And so here we are, my family and I living on the same lake I grew up on, skiing mornings before work, and passing the torch to my two daughters. One daughter is pictured here having just driven me for the first time on a late season barefoot skiing run just after the rain had passed!

My favorite memories of Lake Kegonsa from my

youth were of quiet summer early evenings on

weekdays when few other boats were out. My siblings and I would go out waterskiing until it got too dark to ski safely. It would seem like we had the lake to ourselves and on some evenings the lake would be glass. We would take turns driving, skiing, and spotting for each other. It was so much fun being out on the water, having a great time, and watching the sun set. It was my favorite place to be.

I enjoyed it so much that I also currently live on the lake with my family. Sharing the joy of being on the water with them and enjoying everything this great lake has to offer is a huge blessing.

My favorite childhood lake memory is from the summer of 1985. I was

talking to a classmate in our eighth grade social studies class. We did not

know each other well, but we agreed to take a boater safety class together. That decision marked the start of the best childhood memory on Lake Monona.

A.

I had previously learned to ski with my family on our 1979 Sea Ray Runabout. I did not live on the lake, but my new friend did. At 14 years old, I convinced my parents to leave the boat at his house and as soon as school let out for the summer we spent every waking day on it. I taught all my friends to slalom ski in Monona Bay, we tubed across the lake trying to see who could stay on the longest, and we enjoyed hanging out relaxing on the sandy shores near Olbrich Park meeting new friends.

I look back on this time on Lake Monona and the lasting friendships it forged with people I consider to be some of my best friends today. That summer seemed to last forever, and I don’t remember a day we didn’t enjoy the water.

Maddie Kothe | Lake Mendota

Growing up on the lake has given me so many great memories. Being

an avid skier and member of the Mad-City Waterski Team has blessed

me with memories on the water surrounded by families and friends. One is when I was 12 years old, and we held a Labor Day celebration at our house.

The other teammates brought over all the skies, ropes, and other equipment needed to make it a day full of crazy skiing, trying new tricks, and laughter. We did everything from paddle board races to trying to hula-hoop while skiing, but my favorite part was the last run of the day. My sisters and I had convinced my dad to build a pyramid with us. After the chaos of six people in the water with ropes tangling and skis falling off, somehow we all made it out of the water. Once we were up, we climbed our three high pyramid and I remember looking down from being on top of the base guys below and seeing my dad’s face light up with a huge smile. It was amazing to get the chance to build a pyramid with my dad below and my sister above, and to share the joy of being on top of the water, working together in support of each other. The skiing that day will always make me smile when I look back to that moment, and how much living on the lake has meant to me.

INTRODUCTION TO THE YAHARA WATERSHED The Yahara Watershed begins in the headwaters of the Yahara River in Columbia County and flows south through Dane County for 62 miles, connecting lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa, before emptying into the Rock River in Rock County. The watershed is home to a fast-growing population and some of the most productive farmland in the United States. This intersection of productive farms and growing urban areas poses a unique challenge as residents and government work together to protect and improve water quality in the chain of lakes.

50% PHOSPHORUS REDUCTION CALLED FOR TO CLEAN UP THE LAKES The Yahara CLEAN Strategic Action Plan for Phosphorus Reduction includes 14 actions that are designed to meet a UW Center for Limnology recommendation that we reduce phosphorus by 50% for each of the lakes.

In 2017, partners kept 14,000 pounds of phosphorus out of our lakes, bringing us 30% of the way to our 2025 goal. That amount of phosphorus equates to almost 7 million pounds of algae!

RURAL ACTIONS Farmers are adopting best management practices through the work of Yahara Pride Farms, Dane County Land and Water Resources Department, and the Yahara WINS adaptive management project spearheaded by Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District.

URBAN ACTIONS Municipalities have put in place many projects that reduce the amount of phosphorus entering our lakes. One of the management practices helping to decrease phosphorus coming into Lake Mendota is the confluence pond put in by the City of Middleton on Pheasant Branch. According to a U.S. Geological Survey report, “[phosphorus] loads decreased in spite of increased annual runoff and flood peaks, which are often expected to produce higher sediment and phosphorus loads.”

We will need to continue to support these types of in-stream projects if we are going to see a long-term improvement in our lakes.

STATE OF THE LAKES Lake conditions vary annually based on many factors, including weather, biological interactions in the lake, and land practices in place to prevent phosphorus runoff. Each year in this report, we give a snapshot of last year’s conditions in the context of longer term trends.

AT A GLANCE: 2017 REPORT CARD Water Quality: Using data collected each year by the University of Wisconsin Center for Limnology, Dr. Richard Lathrop analyzes the levels of phosphorus and clarity in our Yahara lakes. His analysis shows that in 2017 most lakes had “Fair” total phosphorus levels and “Good” water clarity, according to Department of Natural Resources criteria for evaluating lakes. For example, Lake Mendota had median clarity of 4.9 feet (within the range for good water clarity for deep lakes according to the Department of Natural Resources). CHALLENGES TO WATER QUALITY IN THE LAKES Phosphorus is the biggest source of the water quality problems in the lakes.

It is a naturally occurring element that enters the lakes from soil and manure washed off from farm fields in rural areas, and from leaves in the streets and construction sites in urban areas. While 20 Greater Madison Lake Guide | Summer 2018

phosphorus does exist naturally in our watershed, urban and rural development has resulted in excessive amounts in the lakes. During rainstorms phosphorus runoff fuels algae growth that turn our lakes green and can lead to beach closures. Scientists have determined that one pound of phosphorus can lead to the growth of 500 pounds of algae in our lakes.

Keeping our streets clear of leaves in the fall will go a long way towards reducing phosphorus runoff in urban areas. Farm conservation practices and manure management are important to reduce phosphorus runoff in rural areas.

CLEAN (Capital Lakes Environmental Assessment and Needs). In a 2011 study, Drs. Lathrop and Stephen R. Carpenter recommended that we reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the lakes by 50%, which will double the number of summer days when the water is clear and beaches are open.

UNDERSTANDING LAKE ECOLOGY CHANGES

In 2012, the Clean Lakes Alliance published Yahara CLEAN Strategic Action Plan for Phosphorus Reduction (2012). This was done through a publicprivate partnership including Dane County and the City of Madison. The plan outlines 14 specific, cost effective and achievable actions to reduce phosphorus entering the lakes by 50 percent. If we are successful we will eliminate 46,000 pounds of phosphorus that fuel an estimated 23 million pounds of algae in our lakes. Overall 70 percent of the phosphorus reduction must come from rural areas and 30 percent from urban areas.

Currently Clean Lakes Alliance’s Plan 2020: A Clear Path Forward is looking at eight critical focus areas to promote phosphorus reduction through projects and community engagement. You can learn more on our webpage at cleanlakesalliance.org/yahara-clean.

Fighting against us in our efforts to reduce phosphorus runoff is climate change. Reports such as the 2011 Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts show that the Yahara watershed is experiencing greater amounts of precipitation and intense storm events compared to previous decades. We are also dealing with great disruptions of our aquatic ecosystems because of the introduction of new and invasive species into our lakes.

Dr. Jake Vander Zanden, Director of the Center for Limnology, explains what we can expect from the recent invasion of zebra mussels. “Zebra mussels are likely to cause nuisance algal mats that foul beaches and increases in harmful blue-green algae blooms. And of course there are numerous other problems such as damage to piers, clogged water

Lake Mendota’s total phosphorus (P) concentrations measured soon after fall turnover (around November 1) are useful for detecting long-term trends in the lake’s phosphorus status or availability. The above graph indicates that Mendota’s phosphorus levels have been lower since 2010 compared to the previous two decades. Reasons for this apparent decline are a combination of many factors including weather (e.g., 2011-2012 drought), watershed and in-stream management practices implemented to reduce phosphorus in runoff, and food web changes in the lake. This decrease in Mendota’s phosphorus levels is a hopeful sign for all the Yahara lakes.

The fall total P index, with values specific to Lake Mendota, also avoids the problem that the Secchi disc and total P indicators measured in the middle of the lake during summer (July-August) could show marked signs of improving water quality in response to increased algal grazing by zebra mussels that have recently invaded and proliferated. An undesirable outcome of this food web change is a shift in algal production to the nearshore environment where ungrazeable filamentous algae – both cotton candy-like (e.g., Spirogyra) and attached fibrous (e.g., Cladophora) forms – are expected to flourish. Blooms of inedible species of blue-green algae could also increase, piling up as floating scums on downwind shorelines.

Thus, the indicators measured in the middle of the lake could show water quality has improved, but shoreline conditions as viewed by the public will be noticeably worse unless phosphorus levels are reduced to curtail the growth of filamentous and blue-green algae.

While some people may see zebra mussels’ ability to clear the water of algae as an answer to water quality problems caused by excess phosphorus, Vander Zanden explains that zebra mussels are changing the ecology of the Madison lakes without reducing the amount of phosphorus in the lakes.

“In no way should zebra mussels be viewed as a solution to our water quality problems. Their invasion amplifies the need to reduce phosphorus inputs to the lakes.”

A DIFFERENT WAY TO EVALUATE OUR LAKES Given the complexity and changes in lake ecology, how can we evaluate our progress? Dr. Richard Lathrop, who has studied our lakes for over 40 years both as a scientist at the Department of Natural Resources and at the Center for Limnology, suggests that we also examine phosphorus levels in Lake Mendota in the fall. This is a time when the lake ecology effects are less visible making it easier to detect long-term changes in lake phosphorus levels.

His analysis shows some good news for Lake Mendota. Over the last decade, we are seeing a decrease in total phosphorus in Lake Mendota in the fall. Due to its upstream position in the watershed, a decrease in phosphorus in Lake Mendota also benefits the downstream Yahara lakes. According to Dr. Lathrop, “Long-term data show that Lake Mendota’s phosphorus levels have been LOWER in the past seven years, compared to the previous two decades and similar to the extended drought of 1987-1988.

These lower phosphorus levels are a hopeful sign for our lakes.

MAD-CITY SKI TEAM SHARES ITS TOWERING TALENT

After a stroll through the Capitol Square Farmers’ Market, a mellow afternoon at the Memorial Union Terrace, and a bike cruise on the Lake Monona path, there’s an equally iconic way to wrap up the quintessential Madison weekend: come Sunday evening, head down John Nolen Drive to Law Park, settle the family with a picnic dinner, and prepare to be wowed by a free water ski show put on by one of the top-ranked ski clubs in the nation.

Equal parts zany and breathtakingly daring, the water ski show is part community service and part training ground for the 150+ members of the Mad-City Ski Team. “We’re a nationally competitive club with a history that goes back to the early 1960s,” says Club President Michael Nowicki, who’s been a member since 1999. “We’re people

from a lot of different backgrounds who come together to share the sport, promote water safety, and ultimately connect people to one of the most special things about Madison—our lakes.”

Ranging in age from three years to 70, club members spend hours perfecting stunts ranging from backward barefoot water-skiing to wakeboard flips and five-high human pyramids towed by more than a mile of rope. “It’s definitely a family phenomenon,” Nowicki says.

“We’ll have Mom and Dad in the boat driving and spotting, and the kids will be behind the boat skiing. Once families join, they tend to stick with the club for generations.”

three times in the past five years, and are 10-time national champions.

While diligent practice is the essential ingredient, Nowicki says the Madison Lakes play a part, too.

“These are not easy lakes to ski on.

They’re big and there’s almost always a pretty good chop on the water that steps up the difficulty of skiing considerably.” But the challenging nature of Madison’s lakes is also an advantage. “Some days it takes pretty extreme skiing skills to perform on our rough water,” Nowicki says, “so we find it a lot easier to ski on the smaller, smoother lakes where most competitions take place.”

When they’re not practicing or performing, members of the non-profit 501(c)3 Mad-City Ski Club volunteer at Frozen Assets Winter Festival, hold beach clean-ups, and work to give Madison-area children their first taste of lake life. “We partner with Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and the local branch of the national non-profit Wake the World to give foster kids a chance to have fun on the water,” Nowicki explains. “The lakes are a big part of our lives, and helping people come to love them like we do is what this club is all about.”

At-Home Actions for Healthy Lakes

1 Rake for the lake

One of the best and easiest things you can do is to rake leaves from the street gutter in front of your home. Clean streets make for healthy lakes! Fall leaf litter is loaded with algae-creating phosphorus, and a fertile “tea” is released into storm sewers that connect to our lakes and streams every time it rains. Your leaves can be composted, mowed into the lawn, or used as a mulch to protect and nourish trees, shrubs, and plants.

A rain garden is a small depression in your yard that collects and soaks up rainwater.

Usually planted with beautiful wildflowers, rain gardens will add curb appeal to your home while attracting a variety of songbirds and butterflies. They also keep our lakes clean by giving rainwater a place to go as it washes off driveways, patios and rooftops.

4 3 Harvest rainwater

Connecting a rain barrel to your roof downspout allows you to collect, store and repurpose rainwater and save money on your water bill. Your plants will love the chlorine-free water, especially when soils dry up between storms. Many of today’s models connect directly to your downspout, are sealed (no mosquitos!), and allow water to re-divert back to the downspout once full (no overtopping!). Try to direct all your roof downspouts to either a rain barrel or rain garden.

4 Sink the rain with porous materials

Protect our lakes and streams by limiting the “footprint” of hard, water-impervious surfaces around your home. If you’re considering a new patio or driveway, opt for porous pavers or water-permeable pavement as affordable and attractive alternatives to traditional concrete or asphalt. During the winter, work to limit your use of de-icing salt, which is damaging to cars, driveways and soils, and pollutes our lakes and groundwater.

Conserving water in and around the home helps protect our drinking water aquifers AND our lakes. Less water use means less water softener salt entering the environment. WINTER’S PLAYGROUND Frozen Assets Festival brings residents out to enjoy Lake Mendota in a unique and exciting way “In the winter, it’s the biggest park we have and everyone can get out safely.

It’s such a different perspective—a big, open tundra.”

By Brennan Nardi Verona resident Bonnie Gulley has lived in the Madison area for a decade and always heard how much fun it was to venture out on the lakes in the wintertime. The Frozen Assets Festival was finally her opportunity to give it a try—and she’s already looking forward to next year.

“It made me love Madison even more,” says Gulley. “Madison is such a great, family-friendly community. It was just really nice to have a fun activity in the dead of winter experiencing winter.”

With her husband, three-year-old daughter, and five-month-old baby in tow, Gulley spent the day enjoying Lake Mendota from a fresh and fascinating perspective.

“It was really cool to have my threeyear-old experience the kites and the ice boats,” she says. “And the s’mores were a hit.”

Other icy activities during the three-day festival—all offered free of charge— included sleigh rides, face painting, science labs, pond hockey, snowshoeing, dance performances, and skating and curling demonstrations.

Gulley says it was a bonus to be able to warm up inside The Edgewater, and then head back out for more fun. Her favorite moment? Definitely the ice boats, which were a surprise addition to the festival.

Ice and wind conditions must be perfect in order for ice boat enthusiasts to gather and compete in a regatta.

“First of all, they’re going super-fast and then, wow, they’re sailing on ice,” she says. “They blew my mind.”

While he doesn’t compete in regattas anymore, Sprinkman still enjoys sailing on the frozen tundra on days when the ice is smooth and there’s very little snow cover.

“We loved it,” she says. “They really enjoyed the kites, the hot chocolate, roasting marshmallows around the firepit, and the Irish dancers. We just scratched the surface of what was available.”

Like Gulley, Chase was intrigued by the idea of walking on a frozen lake, something she remembered doing as a kid when Kites on Ice came to Madison for a few years in the early 2000s. Now 29, she was excited to experience it as an adult.

“The whole idea of walking on the ice was really cool,” Chase says. “They’re so noticeable in the summer. In the winter, being out there is such a cool experience we get to have in Madison.”

“If you like speed, it’s unbelievable how exhilarating it is to go across the lake at 60 or 70 miles per hour.”

As a Clean Lakes Alliance Community Board member and a former member of the Friends of Clean Lakes Board, Sprinkman loves volunteering at the Frozen Assets Festival during the day.

“It’s great to get families involved and show them how important the lakes are,” he says.

For months in advance of the festival, Sprinkman is busy serving as a committee member and host of the Frozen Assets fundraiser, which takes place on the Saturday night of the festival.

“It’s great because there are so many passionate people involved in Clean Lakes Alliance,” he says. “I enjoy putting these events together knowing they’re critical for fundraising for the nonprofit and critical for the health of our lakes.”

Trey Sprinkman couldn’t agree more. For him, being out on frozen Lake Mendota is a treasured family tradition. They live on the lake, so that helps, but Sprinkman is bullish about making sure the lakes are accessible to everyone who wants to use them.

“My wife and I love to get our crosscountry skis out on the lake and go around the shoreline,” says Sprinkman.

sources, with storm water runoff acting as the main mode of delivery. Unfortunately, previously eroded soils, sometimes from decades past, have collected on the stream beds that feed the lakes. It’s called “legacy sediment,” and while it lays dormant in our streams, this bottom muck can release its phosphorus over time and keep our lakes pea soup green.

How it Works Officially, the project is harvesting phosphorus laden silt from streams, but many people use a simpler term— “Suck the Muck.” Over the next three years, Dane County has outlined a plan where large vacuums will “suck” the legacy phosphorus out of stream beds.

Sediment removal will be paired with stream restoration and native seeding projects on nearby land, creating a healthier habitat for wildlife and keeping the nutrients out of the water for good.

With the legacy sediment gone, strides made on the land to reduce runoff will Stream Sites meet healthy, clear streams on the way to our lakes.

In 2012, Clean Lakes Alliance, along with Dane County, the City of Madison, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, commissioned the Yahara CLEAN Report, developing a strategic action plan for phosphorus reduction, which included the removal of legacy sediment as one of its 14 recommended actions. In 2014, Dane County implemented a pilot to study removal of sediment from a stretch of Dorn Creek— a major tributary to Lake Mendota. Two years later, after a successful pilot, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced an aggressive $12 million initiative to clean up 33 miles of streams that feed phosphorus directly to the lakes.

Yahara CLEAN: Our Roadmap to Clean Lakes and Safe Beaches 2018 marks the sixth year that our Greater Madison community has been working toward the goals of the Yahara CLEAN (Capital Lakes Environmental Assessment and Needs) Strategic Action Plan for Phosphorus Reduction.

This 14-point action guide provides the detailed blueprint for how to clean up Lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa. Heeding the call of the University of WisconsinMadison’s top lake scientists—known as limnologists—the plan presents a short list of action steps and price tags that will cut the amount of phosphorus entering our lakes by half. If fully funded and implemented, forecasting models reveal that we can expect to double the number of days our lakes are clear and free of the algal blooms that close beaches and drive us away from the water.

Clean Lakes Alliance, through the release of its annual State of the Lakes report card, shows that, as a community, we are making good progress. As summarized by Senior Director of Watershed Initiatives Paul Dearlove, “Our partners throughout the watershed are working hard to move phosphorus-reducing efforts forward.

Whether it’s piloting new approaches to manure management or expanding fall leaf-collection programs, the list of active projects and collaborations has pushed us about 30 percent of the way to our goal.” However, he notes that the lowest-hanging fruit has been picked, and bold, collective action is needed now more than ever. “Who wants to wait 20 or more years for clean lakes?” says Dearlove.

Edgewater’s ambitious

$100-million renovation and expansion, the guest register at the historic hotel is filled with the names of travelers from as far away as Paris and Shanghai. But there’s another audience the hoteliers are every bit as eager to attract: locals looking to enjoy The Edgewater’s lakefront location.

“From the earliest phases of planning, we wanted The Edgewater to be a public gateway to Lake Mendota and an anchor in the community that supports

Madison as a destination,” says Amy Supple, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at The Edgewater.

“That’s even reflected in the name.

We didn’t call it The Edgewater Hotel.

It’s The Edgewater because we are intent on offering much more to the community than a conventional hotel.”

The Edgewater was built in 1948 by the Quisling family who founded a nearby medical clinic. In the 1950s, Hotel General Manager Augie Faulkner purchased the property – hosting numerous celebrities, including Elton John, Bob

Hope, and Elvis Presley, until his death in 1996. The Faulkner family continued to own The Edgewater until 2008, when it was purchased by Madison native Bob Dunn, president of Hammes Co., whose development projects include the Kohl Center, Miller Park, and the $293 million renovation of Lambeau Field. “The Faulkners had many offers, but they wanted a local viewpoint and a group that shared their vision for all The Edgewater was, is, and could be,” Supple says.

2 and required closure of the hotel for two years to remove parts of a 1970s addition, gut the remaining structure, and construct a sleek new addition.

The urban resort features 202 guest rooms, including two presidential suites, featuring floor-to-ceiling lake views, Italian marble bathrooms, and mirrors with built-in televisions.

“It was a tremendously complex project that required coordination with the state, county, and city as well as consideration for the lake, the neighborhood, and the history of the building,” says Supple, who worked as Development Director for Hammes Co. during the renovation. “The fact that the project survived hinged, I think, on Bob Dunn’s vision and our insistence that The Edgewater serve as a public access point to the lakes.”

It’s a mission that lured Supple away from the Hammes Co. to join The Edgewater management team. “We made a promise and someone has to understand that promise and serve as a steward of the goodwill and the continued effort to draw the public to the lakes.”

The Edgewater’s 30,500-square foot Grand Plaza delivers on that vision, providing a community space for lakefront enjoyment. “We view The

Edgewater as a Memorial Union for grown-ups, and I think that’s exactly what it has become—Madison’s place on the lake, where people can come out, watch a sunset, have a drink, listen to a free concert, or take a boat ride,” Supple says.

The hotel’s 150-foot dock is another example of the venue’s emphasis on lake access. “We didn’t ask for a private marina, but a dock with 42 slips that could become a public asset,” Supple points out. “We offer that public space on the lake where you can tie up for free and come ashore.”

Not that The Edgewater team isn’t focused on filling their 202 rooms. The hotel is Madison’s first and only AAA Four Diamond Hotel, and is number six on the Conde Nast Traveler list of Top Hotels in the Midwest. The property, which boasts more than 350,000 square feet of space under roof, evokes the experience of a posh resort with four restaurants, a fully appointed spa, a 6,000-square foot grand ballroom, and rooftop event spaces with sweeping views of Lake Mendota. The venue hosts dozens of weddings each year along with corporate outings and non-profit fundraising events.

Great improvements have been made, but it’s paramount that public and private entities work together to keep up the momentum.”

BEACH BRAGGING

ho doesn’t like a good beach?

W

First, if you are at a beach it’s 99 percent luck that you are not working. Further, because you are looking at water, you are relaxed.

If the weather is good, it is likely that there are other people at the beach and you can gawk at them. Gawking, which is ordinarily bad behavior, is easy at a beach because you’re wearing sunglasses. Beach people—watching is a tremendous sport, because a lakeside human is happy and wearing fewer clothes which allows us to marvel at the variety of the human form.

And children love beaches. They laugh and squeal in the shallows, and remind us of when we were young and splashing our siblings.

Another great thing about a beach is that it is the only public place where you can lie down on the ground and no one will think there is something terribly wrong with you. In fact, it is preferred that you sprawl on the ground. If you just stand around for a long time at a beach, it’s creepy.

You can read at a beach. You can listen to music at a beach. And best of all, you can do absolutely nothing at a beach.

Which is perfect.

Madison has a lot of beaches. Twentyfive to be exact, spread over five lakes, 58 miles of shoreline, and 28 square miles of open water.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Our beaches are not in good shape. Why? Because they have been ignored. As a

result, folks don’t visit them. Seriously, when was the last time you heard someone in Madison say, ”Hey! Let’s go to the beach!”

They used to say it back in the day.

Beaches were centers of our summer community. There was swimming, lifeguards, concessions stands, good sand, and clean water. And people. Lots of people.

And one big reason there were a lot of people at the beach is because of the admission fee. There wasn’t one. Our beaches were free! And still are.

But the waters of our lakes deteriorated and our beaches died. Today, compared to yesteryear, we have ghost beaches.

And therein lies opportunity. Madison has a chance to breathe life back into our beaches, and offer even more activities and diversion in one of America’s most livable and active cities.

We have a chance to re-imagine what our beaches can be. Today is not the days of yore. Madison Beaches 2.0 can be created anew. And they will need to be different. And better than the old beaches. It’s fun to ponder the possibilities.

In fact, Clean Lakes Alliance is already helping lead the community voice for better beaches through its Reimagining Warner Beach design contest—which will show what this tired northside beach could be.

We will need more shelter from the sun, because we are smarter and don’t slather ourselves in baby oil and bake our skin.

We will need to make our beaches bike friendly, because in the summer we have become a city of bikes. How great does it sound to say, “Hey, let’s jump on our bikes and head to the beach!”

Our beaches could have entertainment.

Wingra Park already offers the occasional jazz concert. Why not regular concerts at featured beaches? Good for us, and good for Madison’s working musicians. If you go to Florida, it’s hard to find a beach that doesn’t have music.

And volleyball. Beach volleyball is huge.

We like it so much we actually build beaches in our taverns so that we can play it. But wouldn’t it be great if we played beach volleyball at an actual beach?

To be a beach that attracts people, we also need refreshments. Food, soft drinks, and yes, maybe even a cold beer.

And perhaps it’s over a cold beer that we can begin to ponder together how to make Madison beaches something we brag about, the way Chicago brags about North Beach. The way Miami brags about South Beach. The way Los Angeles brags about Hermosa and Manhattan beaches. Hell, even New Jersey has beaches that make them happy.

With all the lakes we have, how can we not do better than New Jersey?

Actually, we can.

All we need to do is go to B.B. Clarke, Vilas, the Willows, Law Park, or Brittingham and sit down and ponder what they could be, rather than what they are.

And then, we can brag about our beaches, too.
