A weekend away with students from Whitefriars College - who could say no? I certainly didn't and looked forward to the event with feelings of great anticipation. There were 14 of us going and who knows how many boys?
Then the blow came. The very day before we were due to leave, our teachers informed us that, "due to a lack of interest, the boys aren't going". Most of us were known to have blacked out at this horrific moment and in the end, one girl, who wishes to remain anonymous (could it have been Clare O'Brien?) even backed out of the weekend altogether. Obviously religion was not her prime concern. But despite all the setbacks, we all cheerfully made our way to the meeting place at Mrs Nicholas' home on Friday night. After an hours delay we finally had our wardrobes packed in the bus. There were so many cases that we could hardly fit in ourselves.
We got to Millgrove at around 8.00pm we got our bunks allocated and had a "session" before we went to bed. Most of us were so tired from a hard week at school that we got to sleep early (2.00am) and much to our delight, the next morning Sr Pat woke us at 8.00am. We had various sessions that morning and a lovely BBQ lunch.
After all food had been digested for an hour or two, some of us went for a scenic treck around the mountains. We came across some very muddy swamps, hills with an incline of 83° and obscene men.
It was a very eventful walk Dinner was next on the agenda which was carried out rather uproariously due to the presence of a rather rowdy young man, Father Shane O'Connor from Whitefriars. He apologised profusely for the absence of the boys and by this time we didn't really care whether they were there or not. We had a mass after dinner and I think for many of us it was the most moving, impressive part of the whole week-end.
Video's followed the spiritual uplifting most of us received and after that an extremely crazy night Our room had a "session" of our own and we all told deep, dark secrets that had most of us in fits of laughter. Food was passed (and thrown) around the room and I don't think any of us had eaten so much in our entire lives. Someone even gave the room next to us some of our yogurt and they reciprocated with peanut butter that "went down" very nicely. But that's what retreat is all about-sharing. We certainly gave it to them, and vise-versa.
Finally the last o f us dropped off to sleep about 4.30am and were once again awoken by the infamous Sr Pat at 8.30am. We then had a few more "sessions" before we went to clean up the pig-sty that had been our salvation for the previous two days.
Finally, for the last time, we crammed our belongings into the bus and cars and made our way home . On the whole it was an extremely enjoyable weekend and we'd like to thank Sr Pat and Mrs Nichols who put a lot of effort into the organisation of it.

The very charming and enthusiastic 1986 SRC is achieving quietly but surely. Being a member of SRC inv o lves more than just presenting our bodies at a meeting once a week (even that can be hard a t times), eating our "munchies" and discussing varius matters. The SRC inv o lves work and student particip at ion and that is exactly what the 1986 SRC has done.
The year began with a burst of activity a nd enthusiasm. Th e tw o lo n g awaited drink machines were inst a lled early thi s year. The drink machines have been a great success, quenching the thirst of hard working students. Some students have been so excited abou t the drink m ac hines that they h ave been usi ng them between classes (naughty, naughty)
The fir st te rm slipped by with a few n o tic ea ble ac hievem e nts, such as blue, gold or white hair ribb o ns a nd St. Patricks Day celebrations. Many things we re underway such as the bikestand, chairs a nd t ab le for the B. B. Q. a rea, t aps o n th e ova l a nd basket ball courts, and windows for the P .E. changeroom. M a ny of th ese a re n ow completed and the o ther s n o t far away.
Second term h as been just as successful with a fine effort in th e 40 H o ur Fa mine, the a nnu a l talent quest, a h ot dog day, a very suc cessful little campaign a nd the winning e ntri es from the mur a l competition a re soon to ado rn th e walls of th e P. E. changerooms.
Third term is still to come a nd the SRC is sur e to continue it 's h a rd work a nd enthusiasm. It h as bee n a p leas ure t o work with suc h a great gro up a nd I would lik e to thank a ll the stude n t rep s and Mis s Harco urt for a ll th e ir help and wo rk thi s year.

On our recent trip to "The Centre: we were fortunate enough to meet the much famed Ted Egan. A man of many talents, Ted, along with Nerys, played gracious host to our merry band of travellers during our stay at 'Sink-a-Tinnie Downs'. Whilst staying with "Him" fortune \:?estowed us, allowing us to enjoy two of Ted's campfire concerts and our own private audience with "Him". After witnessing the singer/ songwriter/entertainer in concert, those of us who were not already disciples of his soon became converted.
Ted's concerts are an experience to remember. Accompanied solely by his Fosterphone, Ted provides us with his own unique talent, which allows him to mix the humour of the outback into lively foot-tapping songs and soft sung ballads. Ted begins his concerts by introducing himself with the famous "g'day, I'm Ted Egan" introduction and then launches into singing such popular numbers as "The Drinkers of The Territory".
Ted Egan provided the highlight of the tour for many and we are grateful to him and Nerys for allowing us to stay with them. So if you've read "A Touch of Rough Ted", and if you haven't - take a look; and you'll find that Ted Egan is the hero of the book!

The first day of work experience, most students were filled with nerves as well as anticipation. I will admit that butterflies were chaos in my stomach as I realized that I didn't know where my work experience place was. Although it was a brisk day I could feel tiny beads of perspiration rolling down my neck as I came closer to Thomas Cook. I realized I wasn't alone in my nervousness as I though of my fellow classmates, especially Denise with all those young policemen surrounding her. As the first week was growing to an end most of the year l l's were becoming exellent coffee makers and had blisters on their feet from running around with messages. I think most people were doing tw o placements so a t the start of the second week the nervousness began over again. Coffee, tea and messages were bec o ming routine but a lot of observation was included in a days work Employers were friendly a nd sy mpathised with the awkward position we work experience people were in Most girls had helpful employers. I say mo st because not everyone would agree. I think that work experience did make an impres s ion o n most students a nd we found it very worthwhile.
This years work experience was a great success a nd we appreciate all the wo rk that went in t o prep a re it for us.

Let it be openly stated that the MOST important thing in a year l l's life iS'study. It is a myth that a social life even exists in the dreaded eleventh year. The wise people at the reins of CLC realize this and provided us with an opportunity to make these long hard hours of study more fruitful.
Straight after the May holidays (which we undoubtedly spent feverishly studying for the much feared year 11 exams) the whole of our year embarked on a new adventure in study skills known as M A.S.T , a name which is firmly implanted in the minds of every year 11 student at CLC.
M A.S.T. stands for Management a nd Study Techniques. Naturally we focused on the latter, h o wever we did pick up a few helpful hints on how to manage teachers and their troublesome ways.
For two days we learnt how to improve o ur whole attitude and a ppro ac h t o s tudy through exercises, visual aids, handouts and discussions. The course was very well presented and managed to cover practically every aspect involved with being a student. We learnt how to manage our time, where to study, what to study and why we are studying
H ave you ever m a de a "mind map"? At first most mind maps looked like a mystery t o ur gone wrong, but by the end of the seco nd d ay we could arrange notes in a logical o rder that were easy to study and use for revision in a fraction o f the time it used to tak e us This was much quicker than lab o ri o usly writing every word in the obsolete linear fashion.
I feel that the course was invaluable even if we don't use very technique we were t a ught, I'm sure a ll of us will benefit from the program in one way or another, even if it o nly inspires us to tidy up o ur desks at h o me
Besides, we a ll go t a packet of lifes ave rs at the co mpleti o n o f the course!

Part of the Duke o f Edinburgh Award scheme which h as been introduced int o the school, is to take part in an expedition. This inv o lved afte r sc hool training for approximately three months, one night a week. During th at time we learned m a p reading, compass and bush skills which were used in the final walk. We also had a training walk at Powe lltown. The fin a l walk was to climb The Bluff near Mt. Buller. We had to walk 25km, navigating our ow n way a nd camping ove rnight. A great time was h ad by a ll.

Well so here we are again, reporting on our ever so exciting year. So far we've done work, work, work and more work, and have we played? NO!
But life as a year 10 isn't so bad. We've got our social, we've had our retreats, been to the movies, and that's just about it. Other activities we've done have been ballroom dancing at Parade in 1st term and at Marcellin in 2nd term.
Over the centuries, people have tried and tried again to last the duration of a flute lesson despite lack of practice. Some have succeeded, but most haven't!
So, I have coll·ected little bits of information from one flute lesson or another and have put these together to form a complete survival course for flute students.
l. NEVER admit that you haven't practiced.
2 . ALWAYS have an excuse handy - better make it tragic.
3. No matter what happens, DO NOT get the teacher angry
4. A VOID suspicion
Ballroom dancing at Parade College was a new experience. It was a chance to meet people and many friendships were formed. It was an opportunity to learn how to Ballroom Dance. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely, especially the final night. Parents and friends were invited to partake in the evening. A worthwhile experience.
Jackie O'RourkeYear 10
1 A VOID playing the pieces you haven't practiced. If you haven't practiced any, then don't play any pieces.
2. A VOID choosing that day to yell at the teacher and calling him/her a lousy hypocrite.
3. AVOID going to your flute lesson altogether. This is called TACT.
l. DO NOT use repetitive excuses. By this, I mean: don't give the teacher a note which says you have had to go to your Aunt Gemima's 40th birthday party over the weekend; every week for three months.
2. DO NOT use unbelievable excuses For instance, don't say that you got a m a jor heart a ttack on the weekend and couldn't practice, but now have miraculously recovered.
3. When forging a note, do not sign the note in any of these ways:
(d) and if your name happens to be Jenny Smith, don't sign the note: JENNY SMITH.

Last year we e nte red the Science Talent Search on the request of Mrs Willis. The research was e ntitl ed "Do anima ls re late co lor to food?" We used a dog, cat, h o rse and a temperamental budgie We on ly really entered on the chance of winning some money. Th e presentation day was really g reat. It was more a soc ia l event than an educationa l day because of the cute guys from De La Sa ll e, Xavier a nd Wesley
Because we won so much money$10 00, we spent $25.00 on the research - we decided to ente r two research projects a nd a game ca ll ed Bacteriopoly, this year. Later this yea r we pl a n to market the game and make millions of dollars, and become really, really famous, and buy lots of pizza and choco late with th e money we make.

THE NERVE RA C KERWell, what a camp. Great view on top of the mountain. It was freezing in Monbulk, but rugged up in plenty of coats and jumpers, we felt fine. The food was scrumptious, except for the soup.
First night there was a session with two German people who taught us some German dances and songs. We also played "Leute Lotto" which was a great way to meet everyone. We went to bed at eleven, to sleep at four, got up at seven. Whew! Into the shower queue and joined the breakfast table at eight. , Saturday morning we had two working sessions, which consisted of writing German stories and painting German slogans on T-shirts. Then there was free time after lunch on the flying fox, trampolines and the ropes. That afternoon we played a game where we had to go looking for German clues to reach our various destinations. The winners received their prizes after the concert on Saturday night. The concert was great, embarrassing and funny. Later that night we had a relaxing time listening to pop music and eating more delicious food. Then it was finally to bed again.
Next day we were up early, more working in groups; mainly learning new vocab, and practising speaking German. After lunch it was the big clean up with packing to do. It was a worthwhile learning experience in more than one way. You shared a cabin with people from four different schools, with different personalities and opinions. Many good friendships were made by the sounds of the last few minutes and the exchanges of addresses. Oh, and not to mention all the Auf Wiedersehens!

German is famous for its cold and hot fruit punch. During the summer, signs hanging in the gardens of the cafes along the Rhine, Moselle and Neckar rivers anounce:
"cherry punch today". On the white Rhine boats, the waiter on deck offers large glass mugs, set in bowls with crushed ice and filled with sparkling, full-flavoured "Kalte Ente", a delicious drink made of white wine and fruit. Hot drinks such as "Krambambu li" and 'Feoerzangenbowle' 1 are always welcome when sitting by a warm fire on a cold winter night.
Krambambuli ( 18 servings)
3 bottles dry red wine
114 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice
l spiral orange peel
l stick cinnamon
4 cloves
8 tablespoons sugar
1/J cup rum (54%)
Combine wine, juice, peel, cinnamon, cloves and 4 tablespoons sugar in saucepan.
Simmer 8-10 minutes.
Strain into punch bowl.
Heat rum slightly.
Place remaining sugar in large metal spoon
Light rum with a match
pour over sugar
pour burning sugar over punch "Prost!"

We walk into the music room, Heads held high To face the terror and the doom, And hope we'll leave alive.
Mr. Smith struts in the door, High heeled boots, glasses and all. He stamps his foot on the floor, "Girls be quiet, stop your brawl."
Eventually we settle down, Five minute lecture 'bout mucking around, We get our instruments with a horrendous noise And sit down again, like stuffed toys
Mrs. von Moller waltzes in , Waving her stick in the wind, We all tune up to a note called "A" That leaves Mr. Smith in dismay.
Mrs. von Moller gives a sign, 1, 2, 3, "Girls, keep in time!" Merrily we go along, Knowing that it sounds all wrong. We all sound out of tune, But the concerts in June, If we don't imp rove by then It will be our musical end.

Maths week arrived with excitement high, All of the girls in Year 8 made coloured Pl. The puzzle a day got everyone in Hoping like crazy that they would win Each class had something special to do Maths Trivia made Year 7 all cry and hue.
And Year 8 Maths all over the school Though Year 9's Number Game demanded sheer cool. ln search of some money, Year 10 puzzled hard Cakes galore in the foyer, included a car. Some teachers looked grouse in their jumpers so white
It's a pity they don't always look such a sight. Some girls sported badges all over the place
Fact is, they wore them with flair and with grace. Unfortunately its over for one more year, Not to worry, Maths as usual is still here .

1986 has been a very active year for our music department with increases in the instrumental programme, performances by the orchestra and concert band, and more excursions and music workshops. All of these are aimed at creating another dimension in each student's education.
Performances at:
Heidelberg Festival
Mrs. & Mr. Virgato's wedding
Parade Art Show
Year 7 Concert
End of Year Music Concert
School Assemblies
Workshops at:
CLC
Greenwood High School
Excursions To:
Opera - Don Giavani
North Texas University Big Band
The Orchestra is made up of about thirtyfive members from years 7 to 12. They rehearse every Wednesday and have participated in a number of ativities including the Heidelberg Music Festival. The Orchestra has brought many honours to the College, due to their dedication, and the hard work of their conductor, Mrs Von Moller.
The Concert Band is also made up of approximately thirty-five students who drag themselves reluctantly on Monday lunchtimes to bang, crash and blow for an hour, to see how much noise they can make.
The Concert Band has also had a great success this year with a music workshop at Greenwood High, the Heidelberg Music Festival and excursions to see the Texas State University Band and Don Giovanni.
They are organised by Mr Smith, who usually after a bit of ranting and raving and tearing his hair out, manages to get us o rganised enough to be able to produce music!

This was a particularly good year for the slave-driving Cross Country Team trainer, Mr. Morgan. The inclusion of what seems t o be thousands of year seven's has dramatically incre ase d the size of wh a t used to be a small group of enthusiastic and later exhausted runners. This increase has included just as much enthusiasm and it has potential for exhaustion.
Every Wednesd ay a nd Friday the team is lead around th e Eltham Park and thi s training le ad to great results in the S.C.S.A. cross-country as our Intermedi a te team finished third.
