Fireman Third Class Harold Kendall Costill Returns Home Greater Clayton Community and All South Jersey Veterans Are Invited to Attend After 78 years away, Clayton Borough native Harold Kendall Costill is finally returning home to his family and community that greatly missed him.

Franklin's "National Night Out" a Great Time for All!

When the Franklin Township Police Chief Brian Zimmer and Township Mayor Dave Deegan heard about the real threat of severe thunderstorms for the evening of August 6th, they knew they had to reschedule Franklin's National Night Out. Franklin's Pennsylvania Avenue Sports Complex offers virtually no protection from lightning. Instead, National Night Out was rescheduled for Wednesday, August 14th - and a great night it was for all who came! The very well attended celebration started at 6:30 PM, with displays, food, entertainment and fun for everyone. Visiting the event were New Jersey State Police on horseback, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and SWAT Team equipment and personnel, Franklin Township Police, and representatives from each of the Township's Volunteer Fire Companies. Residents had an opportunity to meet the community's brave local law enforcement and first responders.

Funeral services for Costill will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019. The funeral service will be held in the Clayton High School Performing Arts Center on Pop Kramer Boulevard in Clayton, NJ. Burial will take place in the Costill family plot in Cedar Green Cemetery, located next to the High School. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the Performing Arts Center, with funeral service scheduled to be held from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Costill's casket will travel to his final resting place from 1:00 to 1:30, with services expected to end by 2:00. Persons requiring wheelchair access or special accommodations to attend should contact 609-634-4585.

CLAYTON PD'S "NATIONAL NIGHT OUT" & "POLICE TRADING CARDS" A SUCCESS! In case you missed it, Clayton PD's "National Night Out" in early August was another success, as the well attended event dodged raindrops and the threat of lightning to bring together the community in a show support for neighborhood safety and crime deterrence.

Franklin's five Fire Companies were represented at National Night Out with residents having an opportunity to learn about their operations

Vendors throughout the Clayton community were present to distribute information, donate food, drinks and merchandise, and generally have a great time with the Police Officers who protect them. The Clayton PD also took this opportunity to introduce a new trading card contest. It was created by the Department to encourage the Borough's youth to get to know - in a positive way - the community's first responders. The PD created trading cards for all 14 full-time officers, one card for its police clerks and Chaplains, and another card for the Borough’s Mayor and Council. These cards are for kids 15 and younger to collect individually from each person. According to Clayton Police Chief Andrew Davis, the first three youths who collect all 16 cards will receive a free lunch with the Officers at the Liberty Diner, as well as gift cards from Walmart, Target and Nick’s Pizza. Youths were reminded at the Night Out event to collect cards when meeting Officers on the street, at school, or in the Station – but NOT during emergency situations!

RECYCLING – SAVING THE PLANET BUT BREAKING THE BANK? If you're not recycling in New Jersey, you're breaking the law. But if you are, you might be helping to break the bank, depending on how and what you “recycle”. Clayton Borough is trying to bring down the costs of recycling by reducing the volume of the things you recycle. Smart move, when you consider - according to an official in neighboring Glassboro Borough - “the costs of recycling is nearly at the same level as that of landfilling – and by next year, it promises to cost us more than landfilling”. The reasons for the failure of the recycling business model is simple – the collapse of the recycling market here in New Jersey, and across the nation. Scrap buyers in China and elsewhere in Asia have become very finicky about the quality of the materials they purchase in the recycling markets. Materials in your recycling bin that are contaminated by things that should not be in the “waste
