West Los Angeles is a culturally diverse area with a rich history dating back more than a century. It is home to the Sawtelle neighborhood and the Bundy Triangle, a listed historic resource and rare piece of open space in west LA. Today, the neighborhood is growing in population, with new mixed-use projects densifying the area. As landscape architects on the pursuit of developing a contemporary territorial landscape practice, we understand and believe that public open spaces should be ‘open’ and ‘accessible’. However, given the history surrounding many public spaces across Los Angeles, these assumptions are often tested.
This project aims to empower the community through innovative urban design to forge an inspiring nexus along Santa Monica Boulevard, seamlessly intertwining with the fabric of the neighborhood at strategic junctures. This project will not only cultivate safety, but also serve as a dynamic platform for enrichment, fostering connectivity, creativity, and inclusivity. This is a transformative public space that embodies both beauty and functionality, inviting all to engage, explore, and thrive.

The Smithsonian Institution is undertaking the development of the National Museum of the American Latino, a significant initiative dedicated to honoring the accomplishments, history, and culture of Latino communities across the United States. This ambitious project will comprise a comprehensive complex that includes a dedicated library and a series of ecological landscape programs designed to enhance the overall visitor experience. Play is an essential activity that promotes cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being in children. Through engaging in play, children not only explore the world around them but also gain insights into themselves, developing essential skills necessary for academic success, future careers, and meaningful relationships.
Play provides children with the opportunity to navigate their emotions, develop self-discipline, and learn to express themselves authentically. It acts as a vital form of communication, allowing children to convey their innermost thoughts and feelings. The deeper the engagement in play, the more profound the emotional insights revealed. This process is not only enriching but also healing, contributing significantly to the holistic development of the child.

03The Hillside Retreat
Re-imagining Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Hospitality | 2023
What if, in addition to serving our human clients, we also considered the animals within our ecosystems as integral stakeholders? As landscape architects, our mission extends beyond creating spaces for people as we can also be committed to harmonizing the needs and health of plants, animals, and ecosystems.
In Nature’s Lap is an innovative exploration of a garden retreat designed to foster a deep connection between community members and their natural environment. This retreat invites visitors to immerse themselves in a sensory experience—enjoying the sights, sounds, and aromas of nature—while ensuring that the habitats of local insects and wildlife remain undisturbed.
The design features human-sized cocoon pods strategically placed throughout the garden, providing a comfortable and intimate space for individuals to relax and engage with nature. These pods serve as sanctuaries, allowing visitors to observe and appreciate the intricate dynamics of the ecosystem without causing disruption to the flora and fauna that inhabit the area.
A garden retreat that integrates human experience with ecological stewardship, promoting harmony between community members and local ecosystems through thoughtful design.

A rain garden is an innovative landscape feature consisting of strategically placed shrubs and plants— often native species—planted within a small depression typically ranging from 6 to 9 inches deep. Designed to temporarily hold and absorb stormwater runoff, rain gardens effectively capture water flowing from roofs, driveways, patios, and lawns.
The proposed rain garden for the campus will play a crucial role in managing stormwater runoff, particularly from the highest elevation, preventing excess water from reaching the classrooms. While the school has implemented temporary measures, such as strategically placed sandbags, the rain garden presents a more sustainable and visually appealing solution. This installation will eliminate the reliance on sandbags while serving as a natural filtration system to remove pollutants from runoff.
Beyond its functional benefits, the rain garden will create a biodiverse habitat that supports local pollinators, including hummingbirds and butterflies. This intentional integration not only enhances the ecological richness of the campus but also aligns with educational goals, providing students with unique opportunities to engage with and appreciate local wildlife within their learning environment. Ultimately, the rain garden embodies a commitment to sustainability while enriching the educational experience for the entire school community.

I discovered the profound impact photography wields in the field of Landscape Architecture as it can be used as a tool for precise site mapping, site analysis, and graphic communication. Behind the lens, I embrace the art of storytelling, skillfully crafting narratives that transcend the boundaries of time and space. Each photograph becomes a testament to the beauty and unique character of every landscape, capturing its essence in a way that words alone cannot convey.
Beyond a passion or a hobby, photography has become an integral part of my professional identity, guiding the trajectory of my career. It serves not only as a creative outlet but also as a strategic instrument through which I explore and articulate my vision for environmental design and spatial planning. Photography is not just about capturing moments, but about shaping perspectives and inspiring meaningful change in the built environment.
