News to Note Clawson Public Schools Hosts Community Conversation

Clawson community members gather to discuss the future of Clawson Public Schools

Members of the community, Clawson School Board members and Clawson Public Schools administrators and teachers came together for a Community Conversation Thursday, October 29, to discuss ideas about the future success of the district.

The room was set up in a World Cafe format with six discussion stations: • Budget – Sharing, Limitations, Opportunities & Priorities • Clawson Public Schools – What is uniquely & proudly Clawson? What would we like to become?

• Alternative Calendar Considerations – What opportunities can we see by examining our school calendar?

• Fine Arts/STEM or STEAM – Curriculum & Career Choices for the 21st Century • Growth Mindset – Deepening Instruction Expectations, Responsibilities & Effort • Community Outreach & Education – Learning with and from each other; Accessing Opportunities & Resources, Clawson Community Education Opportunities, Facilities Rentals, Volunteer Opportunities Each of the 38 participants attended three of the six discussion stations where they explored ideas together and outlined what the group thinks and feels about issues that are important to them.

The participants then prioritized the topics.

Ideas which were deemed to be most important included: • Local business co-op volunteer opportunities for students • After school enrichment educational opportunities at all levels • Employee wellness programs/incentives • Block scheduling with longer class periods on even and odd days • Adjusting school start times • Project based learning • Students learning at different rates and in different ways

Marcia Young Receives Gwisdella Administrator of the Year Award Marcia Young, Clawson Public Schools Director of Special Education, received the Special Education Administrators of Oakland County (SEAOC) Gregory Gwisdalla Special Education Administrator of the Year Award.

Mrs. Young was nominated for the award because of her significant contributions on behalf of special education, her commitment to quality service, integrity, diverse involvement, leadership, and personal attributes that make her an outstanding representative of the Gwisdalla Award. She has led the Clawson Public Schools Special Education Department since 2003.

Kelly Horne Named Crisis Intervention Coordinator & Athletic Supervisor Kelly Horne has been appointed Crisis Intervention Coordinator and Athletic Supervisor for the Clawson Public School District.

Mrs. Horne will work with high school crisis intervention staff counselors, social workers, and psychologists to provide support to students who have been identified as having poor attendance, behavioral problems in the classroom, and/or failure in more than one subject. In addition, she will serve as Athletic Supervisor managing the coaching staff, scheduling games, etc.

A Clawson High School graduate, Mrs. Horne began her career in Clawson in 2001 as substitute teacher.

She has taught English at Clawson High School and has been the Athletic Events Coordinator.

Mrs. Horne received her Bachelor’s Degree from Alma College, Post Bachelor’s Teacher Certification from Eastern Michigan University, and Graduate Degree in Educational Leadership from Oakland University.

Clawson Welcomes Six New Teachers Clawson welcomes six new teachers for the 2015-2016 school year, including two Clawson Schools graduates: Stacy Anderson, GSRP Preschool Teacher – Stacy Anderson comes to Clawson from Lamphere Public Schools in Madison Heights where she was the GSRP lead teacher.

Previously she taught at Laker Elementary School in Pigeon, Michigan, and Northwood Elementary in Royal Oak where she was the Young Oaks Latchkey Site Supervisor. Stacy received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Baker College and is highly qualified in Language Arts, Elementary Education and Early Childhood.

Christopher Claffey, Clawson Middle School, 7th grade Mathematics Teacher – Christopher Claffey completed his student teaching at Clawson Middle School and Clawson High School in 2013-2014. Claffey graduated from Baker College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, with a major in mathematics and minor in chemistry. Last year he taught mathematics at Cranbook-Kingswood Middle School for Boys in Bloomfield Hills.

Caroline Cwiek, Clawson High School, Autism Spectrum Disorder Teacher – Caroline Cwiek comes from the Waterford Public School District where she was an Autism Spectrum Disorder Teacher for four years. She has taught in the Birmingham Public School District and the Fitzgerald Public School District. Caroline is a Clawson Schools graduate who received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Saginaw Valley State University and a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education with an Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement from Oakland University.

Christina Stachel, Clawson High School, Special Education Resource Room Teacher – Christina Stachel, also a Clawson Schools graduate, comes to Clawson from Hazel Park High School where she taught Special Education for the past four years. She is a graduate of Wayne State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education with a dual major in Special Education and Cognitive Impairment. She has Teacher Certification Endorsements in Cognitive Impairment K-12 and Elementary Education K-5.

Paige Sullivan, Clawson High School, English Language Arts Teacher – Paige Sullivan previously taught English Language Arts at Woodington Middle School in Kinston, North Carolina, and served as an intern teacher at Portage Northern High School in Portage, Michigan. Paige received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education with a major in English from Western Michigan University.

Stacy Sutter, Clawson High School, English Language Arts and English Language Learning Teacher – Stacy Lynn Sutter received her undergraduate degree from Michigan

State University with a major in English and minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. She has a Michigan Secondary Education Certification from Michigan State University.

She taught English Language Arts and English Language Learning at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan and did her student teaching at Novi High School.

The principal will take parents and their children on a personal guided tour of the school, introduce the kindergarten teacher, show the kindergarten classroom in action and answer any questions. The 17th Annual Preschool & Child Care Information Night, sponsored by the Royal Oak Public Library, will be held Monday, February 1, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Northwood Elementary School, 926 W. Twelve Mile Road. Julie Bokor, Clawson Public Schools Preschool Supervisor, and Renay Swords, Clawson Childcare Supervisor, will be on hand to talk to parents and answer questions about the various programs offered, including Parent-Tot Classes, Preschool Programs, Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), and Child Care. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held Monday, February 8.

Second Semester Schools of Choice Applications Available January 18-29, 2016

Clawson Public Schools will accept Schools of Choice applications Monday, January 18 through Friday, January 29 for the second semester. Enrollment openings are available for applicants in Developmental Kindergarten – 11th Grade. Students must reside in an Oakland County school district.

Clawson Schools to Offer High School Ice Hockey

Clawson String Orchestras Perform with the Moxie Strings

Clawson Public Schools announced the District has joined a cooperative agreement with Royal Oak Shrine, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes and Everest Collegiate to play Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 Ice Hockey. The program was presented to the Clawson School Board by Adam Schihl, Clawson Middle School Principal and former Athletic Director. The Board unanimously approved the agreement. Schihl said he anticipates six to eight Clawson players will join the team.

The group worked with the Clawson Middle School and High School String Orchestras throughout the day November 5th and that evening the students presented a concert improvising and soloing with Moxie Strings fiddler Diana Ladio, electric cellist Alison Lynn and drummer and world percussionist Fritz McGirr.

Clawson High School Showcases Its Remodeled Cafeteria and New Tennis Courts The new Clawson High School Cafeteria, Trojan Hall, and new tennis courts, which were constructed this summer thanks to the community support for the 2014 bond.

Clawson Schools Announces December Winter Concerts Superintendent to Host Pre-Concert Conversations Clawson Public Schools announces a series of upcoming Winter Concerts December 14-16.

The concerts will be held in the Clawson High School Auditorium and the community is invited to attend. Prior to the concerts December15 & 16 at 6:30 p.m., in the High School Media Center, Superintendent Monique Beels will host Informal Pre-Concert Conversations where members of the community are invited to come for refreshments and talk with the Superintendent as well as Board of Education members.

Concerts will be held on the following dates:

• Monday, December 14, 7:00 p.m. – Clawson High School Winter Jam Open Band Concert.

• Tuesday, December 15, 7:00 p.m. – Strings Winter Concert will feature: – 6th grade students performing a blues piece – 7th & 8th grade students playing a fiddle style arrangement of “Deck the Halls” – H igh School students performing the theme from the popular HBO series “Game of Thrones” Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students.

Pre-Concert Conversation with the Superintendent will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Media Center.

• Wednesday, December 16, 7:00 p.m. – Clawson Choirs Concert – 6 th-12th Grade Clawson Choirs will be singing classical, spiritual, and madrigal selections, as well as winter time pop pieces.

Pre-Concert Conversation with the Superintendent will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Media Center.
