News to Note Clawson Public Schools Hosts Community Conversation

Clawson community members gather to discuss the future of Clawson Public Schools

Members of the community, Clawson School Board members and Clawson Public Schools administrators and teachers came together for a Community Conversation Thursday, October 29, to discuss ideas about the future success of the district. The room was set up in a World Cafe format with six discussion stations: • Budget – Sharing, Limitations, Opportunities & Priorities • Clawson Public Schools – What is uniquely & proudly Clawson? What would we like to become? • Alternative Calendar Considerations – What opportunities can we see by examining our school calendar? • Fine Arts/STEM or STEAM – Curriculum & Career Choices for the 21st Century • Growth Mindset – Deepening Instruction Expectations, Responsibilities & Effort • Community Outreach & Education – Learning with and from each other; Accessing Opportunities & Resources, Clawson Community Education Opportunities, Facilities Rentals, Volunteer Opportunities Each of the 38 participants attended three of the six discussion stations where they explored ideas together and outlined what the group thinks and feels about issues that are important to them. The participants then prioritized the topics. Ideas which were deemed to be most important included: • Local business co-op volunteer opportunities for students • After school enrichment educational opportunities at all levels • Employee wellness programs/incentives • Block scheduling with longer class periods on even and odd days • Adjusting school start times • Project based learning • Students learning at different rates and in different ways

Marcia Young Receives Gwisdella Administrator of the Year Award Marcia Young, Clawson Public Schools Director of Special Education, received the Special Education Administrators of Oakland County (SEAOC) Gregory Gwisdalla Special Education Administrator of the Year Award. Mrs. Young was nominated for the award because of her significant contributions on behalf of special education, her commitment to quality service, integrity, diverse involvement, leadership, and personal attributes that make her an outstanding representative of the Gwisdalla Award. She has led the Clawson Public Schools Special Education Department since 2003.
