An update from Switzer

CEO, Tina Mills

Spring was warm and summer is warmer here at Switzer as the summer has well and truly set in. On this note, I’m pleased to announce that we have installed additional A/C units, so everyone should be feeling more comfortable inside. With all this lovely weather, I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that our extensive gardens have been blooming! We are very pleased to have finally found a wonderful new gardener to help keep them looking their best – welcome to the team, Den.

Impressive Statistics!

Our health and safety stats are looking incredible, and as you will see later in this newsletter, this is due to everyone doing their part to keep themselves, the residents, and the site as safe and hygienic as possible Our falls, incidents, and infections have all reduced significantly, and I want to thank you all for doing your part to make this happen!

Quality Systems

Our quality systems are in place to enhance the unique lifestyle opportunities Switzer offers our residents, families, and dedicated caregivers. Significant improvements have been made to resident meals, flooring, furnishings, and ongoing equipment replacement during 2024.

Positive Staff, Family Member, and Resident Feedback

Some highlights from this year’s staff, family and resident satisfaction surveys included more than 87% of residents agreeing or strongly agreeing that the staff “honour their personal choices”.

Loving Companionship

Animals are naturals at giving loving companionship, so they are a regular part of Switzer life. This season, we’ve had chickens hatching at reception, a visiting spring lamb, and countless guest pups in addition to our eight Switzer cats and two regular canine members of staff.

Switzer’s cats are incredibly spoilt and cruise around Switzer throughout the day visiting residents and staff for treats and cuddles - especially at night when they seek out a cozy bed to curl up on. The cats live at Switzer permanently, and Dawn Anderson, who is their main caretaker, as our Animal Wellbeing Coordinator, feeds them and ensures they are healthy, and well maintained.

Our two canine ‘members of staff’ are Rusty (a bichon x Shih tzu) and Jack (a Jack Russell cross). Both dogs are loved by many of our residents. Rusty gets taken out for daily walks and he is often found hitching a ride on a walker being pushed around Switzer. Jack on the other hand, marches diligently behind his owner our Clinical Lead Nurse Sharon, and gives so much joy to all.

Our lifestyle team recently held an Animal Day, and Jacqueline, our Resident Wellness Coordinator brought in four of her poodles, three of which were puppies, who of course, gave lots of cuddles and laughter!

Sun, Smiles, and Stories at Kaitaia’s new Town Square!

As we continue to build connections within our community, we're excited to share with you our van outing to Kaitaia's recently upgraded town square!

Our residents had an amazing time soaking up the warm weather and taking in the beautiful sights of the town square. They relaxed in the comfortable chairs under the shade, admiring the stunning sculptures and artworks on display. The water feature added a calming touch to the atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to unwind and socialise. To make the outing even sweeter, we treated our residents to some sweet, refreshing popsicles! As they enjoyed their cool treats, they shared stories and memories of Kaitaia's past. It was wonderful to see our residents connecting with each other and reminiscing about the good old days.

One of our residents (pictured on the cover of this newsletter) was thrilled to discover the Kaitaia Book Exchange Box at the town square! She had a wonderful time perusing the broad selection and picked out a book to bring home and enjoy.

If you have any suggestions for future outings, please reach out to the Switzer Lifestyle Team. We're always looking for ways to engage our residents and bring our community closer together.

Te Hiku Pools Swimming Adventure

Splish, splash – we were not taking a bath! Instead we ventured over the road with a group of residents who were keen to test out the new pool facility on our doorstep! Our residents had a wonderful experience at Te Hiku Pools at the beginning of summer! It was a delightful outing filled with laughter and joy as our residents donned their swimming attire, ready for a refreshing day in the hydrotherapy pool.

Accompanied by our dedicated lifestyle team, residents enjoyed a relaxing time floating in the warm water with the help of colourful pool noodles. It was a blissful escape, especially during our exclusive adult-only hours in the hydrotherapy pool, allowing everyone to unwind and relish the soothing environment.

The facility at Te Hiku Pools is clean, modern, and features spacious toilets and shower rooms, making it easy for our residents to change comfortably before and after their swim. This thoughtful setup ensured a hassle-free experience, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the day.

For many of our residents, this outing was a beautiful reminder of the activities they cherished in the past. The smiles on their faces and the laughter shared created unforgettable moments that will be cherished for a long time.

REMEMBER: If you need waterproof swimwear? We've Got You Covered! - Don't let a lack of waterproof swimwear hold you back from enjoying the pools! Our friendly Receptionist, Donna, has you covered with a range of options available for purchase. Simply drop by reception to explore the selection and get ready to dive in!

Introducing Neryl!

Hi everyone! My name is Neryl Bice and I have a busy and multi - faceted role here at Switzer Residential Care. As the Health & Safety and Quality Coordinator, my role is to ensure that we are following Health and Safety Standards and maintaining the highest levels of quality here at Switzer

It’s been a busy second half of 2024 for Quality with the Community Programme and BSI Certification Audits happening. Both had great outcomes with minimal corrective actions required.

Benchmarking is a quarterly task for Health and Safety. The Benchmarking Programme provides a comprehensive set of indicators aligned to the Industry Standards which assist Switzer to measure internal performance as well as compare results against 150 other sites within the care sector throughout Australasia. The latest result for the quarter ended September were our best yet with 16/30 indicators in the top 25% of all sites. Well done everyone!

As part of my role, I also chair the Health & Safety Committee, which comprises H&S representatives who meet bi-monthly to discuss any new hazards, near misses, accidents or general issues related to health and safety and plan and implement solutions for them.

As we wrap up this busy year, I’d like to remind you all to take good care, stay safe over the silly season, and remember that Health and Safety is EVERYONES responsibility.

Reverend Eru’s Journey into a Changing World

A resident at Switzer recently released a fascinating autobiography. The book, Tōku Hīkoi Whakamua, i tēnei Ao Hurihuri, My journey into a changing world by Reverend Eru Harawira-Hadfield was launched at Korou Kore Marae in Ahipara recently.

The life and times of the Ahipara-born kaumatua tells of a strong, lifelong Christian faith, his whakapapa, iwi, whānau, and tupuna, along with numerous anecdotes - both humorous and profound - along the way. Particularly notable is the blend of the Māori and English languages, especially relevant for anyone interested in better understanding te reo, through proverbs and their translations; as well as an acknowledgement of mentors, peers and wider community, the tangata whenua. Worthwhile to anyone interested in learning more about Far North heritage, the beautifully produced book features stunning pictures of local landmarks, particularly Ahipara. – Frank Malley, Switzer Lifestyle Team Member

"Every Sunday morning after church service, the old folks would assemble at the foot of the stairs at the front entrance to Saint Clements [in Ahipara] and take turns to stand and introduce their whaikorero (oration) with ease. This was where you would hear some of the best te reo Maori spoken. Although I was only about five years at the time, I remember uncle Rapi Williams would lean over the fence - line and produce a bottle of home brew. These were the kaumàtua, ki ngà kura nehe ra (from the old school) t hat I was brought up with and I am proud to be part of their whanaungatanga (relationship)."

Anyone keen to get their hands on a copy of this epic book will have to wait until a repress is ordered. The initial run of 1500 copies were snapped up almost as soon as it came off the press! Tino Pai, Eru!

2024 Xmas at Switzer was a Month-Long Fiesta!

But w e are not complaining! Beginning in late November, we dug out 10 tonnes of Xmas decorations and spent a week decking Switzer’s many halls! The following pages detail our efforts.

Switzer’s Christmas Themed DecoraSons

As we bid farewell to another wonderful year, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the joy and magic of the holiday season at Switzer. Our Christmas Committee, comprised of staff and residents, worked tirelessly to bring the festive spirit to life throughout our community.

This year, each household was assigned a unique Christmas theme, carefully crafted to delight and inspire. Our lounges were transformed into enchanting spaces, showcasing the creativity and talent of our committee members. Take a look at the amazing themes we enjoyed in the following pages:

• Matai Lounge: "Birds of a Feather" - A room filled with flying birds and white feathers.

• Kowhai Lounge: "Traditional Christmas" - A classic and cosy atmosphere, evoking the warmth and nostalgia of the season.

• Reception Area: "Candyland" - A whimsical and playful space, reminiscent of childhood wonder and sweet treats.

• Main Dining Room: "Floral Elegance" - A sophisticated and elegant setting, featuring beautiful flowers and refined decor.

• Kauri: "Under the Sea" - An underwater wonderland, complete with ocean creatures and treasures.

• Millie Lounge: "Kiwiana" - A celebration of New Zealand's unique culture and heritage, with a festive twist.

A Special Thank You

We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to a generous member of our community, who kindly donated a beautiful real Christmas tree for our outdoor space. The tree was stunningly decorated with colourful lights, adding to the festive ambiance of our home.

Looking Forward to Next Year

As we get ready to pack away the decorations before New Year and bid farewell to the 2024 Xmas season, we're already excited to see what next year's Christmas Committee will bring. We invite you to join us again soon in brainstorming new themes and ideas for 2025!

Staff Goodies… scrubs for Xmas!

Did you know

planning for the staff started back in March 2024, when the first purchases of unique staff gifts began! Putting together 112 staff gifts takes a lot of planning, time (and evidently a whole spare bedroom). We came up with three different gift ideas as a token to show how grateful we are for our awesome Switzer staff!

The 10 Eden AlternaSve Principles

1. The three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders.

2. An Elder-centred community commits to creaEng a human habitat where life revolves around close and conEnuing contact with people of all ages and abiliEes, as well as plants and animals. It is these relaEonships that provide the young and old alike with a pathway to a life worth living.

3. Loving companionship is the anEdote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to human and animal companionship.

4. An Elder-centred community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the anEdote to helplessness.

5. An Elder-centred community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creaEng an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interacEons and happenings can take place. This is the anEdote to boredom.

6. Meaningless acEvity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essenEal to human health.

7. Medical treatment should be the servant of genuine human caring, never its master.

8. An Elder-centred community honours its Elders by de-emphasising topdown bureaucraEc authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of the Elders or into the hands of those closest to them.

9. CreaEng an Elder-centred community is a never-ending process. Human growth must never be separated from human life.

10. Wise leadership is the lifeblood of any struggle against the three plagues. For it, there can be no subsEtute.

The core concept of the Eden AlternaEve is simple: Care environments are habitats for human beings that should promote health, wellbeing and growth rather than faciliEes where the frail and elderly stagnate and decline.

Switzer believes that providing human companionship, animals, children and plants help to provide opportuniEes for a meaningful life
