Updates from Switzer
CEO, Tina Mills

As we head into the depths of winter, I have been reflecting on something we do so well here at Switzer. Eliminating loneliness. In pursuit of connection and care, at our core, humans are fundamentally connection-oriented beings. Our sense of belonging doesn’t arise in isolation; it flourishes in the presence of others. Whether it’s a familiar face, a caring voice, or a moment shared over a cup of tea, these are the ties that remind us of who we are and why we matter.
That’s why, at Switzer, our purpose is always people. We not only believe, but we also educate, that connection is a basic human need, not a luxury. Our elders, our staff, and every person who walks through our doors or reaches out to us, we are here to nurture their sense of worth and belonging. The warmth of human relationships isn't just comforting; it’s life-giving. Wherever loneliness lingers, we aim to meet it with presence, understanding, and heartfelt connection.

We appreciate your understanding as we work through these necessary improvements to keep our community safe.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora ARRC Update
Switzer has received confirmation via the New Zealand Aged Care Association that Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora will implement a 4% increase in our revenue funding. Anzac Day ReflecFons

On April 25th, we came together to honour the brave men and women who served our country with courage and commitment on Anzac Day. It was a heartfelt gathering in the Millie Lounge, where both residents and staff united in a spirit of solemnity and gratitude.
This year’s theme, “Remembering with truth, not just tradition,” reminded us of the importance of recognising the sacrifices made and the stories that need to be shared. Our community embraced this theme wholeheartedly, wearing poppies as a symbol of remembrance and respect.
The ceremony was led by our dedicated staff member Eddie, with the invaluable assistance of Frank. Their leadership helped create a meaningful service that resonated with everyone present. We shared stories, reflected on the past, and took a moment to appreciate the freedom we enjoy today, thanks to the sacrifices of those who served.
After the service, residents were treated to a cosy gathering where they enjoyed rum and coffee, sharing memories and camaraderie. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect and honour our heroes together.
Staff Brunch Bunnies! *Hop, Hop,
Hop*

We are excited to share the highlights from our delighCul staff Easter brunch. It was a fantasGc opportunity for everyone to come together, enjoy some delicious food, and foster connecGons.
First and foremost, a huge shoutout to our management team for organising such a wonderful event. Your efforts are truly appreciated, and it was evident that a lot of thought went into making this brunch special for all of us.
As we gathered in the beautifully decorated dining room, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and cheer. The tables were adorned with vibrant Easter chocolates and colourful bunnies, creating a festive ambiance that perfectly captured the spirit of the holiday. It was a joy to see everyone smiling and engaging in lively conversations.
The brunch menu was a hit! Staff members indulged in a variety of mouth-watering dishes, with crispy bacon and fluffy pancakes taking centre stage. The toppings were plentiful, allowing everyone to customize their plates to their heart's content. It was a delightful spread that catered to all tastes, and the camaraderie shared over food was truly heart-warming.
It was wonderful to witness colleagues from different departments mingling and sharing laughs, reinforcing the sense of community that makes Switzer's such a great place to work. Moments like these lift our spirits and remind us of the importance of connection and teamwork.
InternaFonal Nurses Day 2025

InternaGonal Nurses Day, celebrated on the 12th of May, is a hearCelt tribute to the incredible work of nurses around the world. This date marks the birthday of Florence NighGngale, who laid the foundaGon for modern nursing.
Nurses are the backbone of healthcare; they combine skill, compassion, and dedication to ensure patients receive the best care possible. As someone working in aged care, I see daily how nurses not only attend to medical needs but also provide emotional support, preserving dignity and peace for our elderly residents.
In my experience, nursing in an aged care setting is both challenging and rewarding. Each day presents new situations that require quick thinking, empathy, and resilience. The bond formed between nurses and residents is truly special. It’s not just about administering medication; it’s also about holding a hand, listening to stories, and being a source of comfort during difficult times. This connection enriches the lives of those we care for and makes our work fulfilling. Celebrating International Nurses Day helps to shine a light on these vital relationships.
This year, our facility celebrated International Nurses Day with a shared lunch, an event filled with gratitude and joy. It was a lovely surprise to see everyone come together to recognize the hard work of nurses. However, the day also served as a reminder that quality care is a team effort. Every member of the staff, from carers to kitchen and cleaning teams, plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and loving environment for our residents. Together, we create a community that prioritises care and compassion, allowing us to celebrate not just nurses but the entire team that makes a difference in the lives of those we serve.

A Cosy Easter Adventure Filled with Laughter and Joy

This year’s egg hunt turned into a heart-warming indoor adventure, proving that joy and teamwork shine brightest, no maQer the weather. Dive into the highlights of this unforgeQable day!
When the weather did not cooperate, we did not let it stop the fun. Instead, we transformed the Easter egg hunt into a cosy household adventure. Residents and staff worked together to create a memorable experience filled with laughter and excitement.
With baskets in hand, residents searched every nook and cranny, uncovering hidden treasures along the way. The thrill of discovery was palpable smiles lit up the room as each egg was found.
The egg hunt was not just about finding chocolates; it was about coming together as a community. Residents helped each other, shared their finds, and even gifted eggs to staff members, spreading kindness and cheer.
From the laughter echoing through the households to the camaraderie of the hunt, the day was a beautiful reminder of the power of togetherness. It was a true testament to the Easter spirit!
This event was not just about fun, it was about creating moments of connection, joy, and shared experiences. These memories remind us of the importance of celebrating life’s simple pleasures, no matter the circumstances.

Resident Profile: Meet Ros!

Ros was born in the UK where she grew up surrounded by the stories of her father, who served in the Indian Army. This unique background shaped her early years and instilled values of service and community. As a young girl, Ros felt a calling to help others, which later led her to a fulfilling career as a nurse. Eventually, her adventurous spirit took her to Australia, where she practiced nursing in the outback, providing care to those in remote areas
In Australia, Ros met a fellow Brit who would become her husband. Together, they built a family in Cambridge, raising a son and daughter. But as life often has its ups and downs, Ros faced the heart-wrenching loss of her husband a few years later. Despite her grief, she remained in Cambridge for a while before deciding to follow her daughter to Tokerau Beach. Embracing a change of scenery and living close to her family brought her comfort and joy, especially as she enjoyed special moments with her grandchildren.
Now, after two years at Switzer, Ros continues to live with a spirit full of kindness and generosity. Each morning, she can be seen walking around the garden with the dog Rusty while picking up litter to keep the area clean. Ros loves engaging in conversations with the staff and joins in on the activities offered at the care home. Yet, she also treasures the quiet moments spent knitting, a skill she enjoys and uses to create beautiful pieces for her loved ones. Ros's life story is a testament to resilience, love, and the importance of community.
MānawaFa a Matariki!

What a fantastic day we had celebrating Matariki! Ahipara School's principal, Andrea Panther, along with amazing parents and teachers, brought 50 enthusiastic tamariki to share their incredible kapa haka performance. The Millie Lounge buzzed with energy and excitement as the students enthusiastically showcased their powerful haka and beautiful waiata. Their performances radiated joy and pride, captivating everyone present. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who supported the tamariki, making this event memorable for everyone involved.
The residents listened intently and were truly awestruck by the energy and talent displayed during the performance. Comments like, “That was fantastic!” and “Tu meke!” filled the air, showcasing their admiration. The sound of the haka echoed through the lounge, leaving everyone with a sense of pride and warmth that celebrated the spirit of Matariki. After the performance, resident Frank Wiki took the stage to share a moving kōrero in Te Reo Māori, which added a deeper layer of cultural appreciation to the day.
To further honour Matariki, residents enjoyed a delicious hangi lunch prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff. The tables were beautifully decorated with stars representing the nine stars of Matariki: Matariki, Pōhutukawa, Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Ururangi, and Hiwa-i-te-rangi. The residents shared how much they enjoyed the hangi, remarking on its rich flavours and the sense of community it brought.
Thank you once again to everyone who contributed to this memorable day. Celebrating Matariki together allows us to embrace our culture and foster connections within our community. We look forward to more events like this in the future!

Groundbreaking Ceremony

The weather could not have been better for those who assembled for the groundbreaking ceremony to officially begin construction of 28 brand new independent living units on the west side of the Switzer Residential Care facility earlier in June 2025.
Among those in attendance were former Far North mayor John Carter, representatives from the various contracting companies involved in the major project, iwi representatives there to bless the new site along with several staff and residents from Switzer itself.
John Carter opened proceedings by welcoming everyone following the welcoming, the new site was blessed by local iwi representative, Mike Te Wake and kaumatua George Riley from Te Rarawa, with Mr Te Wake asking a staff member to plant four kumara - one in each corner of the building site - later that same day
The crowd then walked over the new site to get a feel for the scale of the development as the benign conditions seemed to bring an air of optimism to proceedings.
The project will see the Claud Switzer Memorial Trust (CSMT) undertake to build 28 one-bedroom units for elderly people, CEO Tina Mills told local media recently. She noted the proposed Western Village development will house between one and two people a unit, representing homes for up to 56 community members.
“We see this upcoming development as an extension of the work [our founder] Claud Switzer started. His vision is something we keep front of mind and supporting our local community is the very core of the trust’s purpose,” Tina said.
“In line with the Eden philosophy we embrace at Switzer, we are passionate about creating authentic human habitats that uphold an individual’s right to a life full of purpose, connection, empowerment and possibility, regardless of age or changing abilities. We are really excited to be able to get this project off the ground to ease some of the burdens on individuals and their families in the area.”

West Project Progress
“We love working with passionate and dedicated partners; and the West Project is a perfect example of what strong collaboration can achieve.
It’s been exciting to see the early stages of groundwork take shape, thanks to the commitment of our longstanding partners: Far North Roading Limited and Arcline. Haigh Workman and Wilton Joubert are involved due to their specific skill sets and boy do we need them. Their teams have been hard at work preparing for the Geotech and Civil works ahead of our much-anticipated 28 one-bedroom unit build.
We’re deeply grateful for the continued support these companies have shown us over the year, and we’re thrilled to see our 2026 construction goals becoming a reality.”

Mother’s Day High Tea

In May, our Switzer residents experienced a day filled with love, laughter, and delightful treats as we hosted a special Mother’s Day high tea. It was a beautiful celebration of motherhood, friendship, and community. The air was filled with cheerful chatter and the clinking of teacups, creating a warm ambiance that made everyone feel cherished.
Our lifestyle team, along with dedicated volunteers, transformed the space into a charming tea party setting. Elegant decor set the tone for the event, with tables adorned with soft pink flowers, delicate fine china cups, and stylish table runners. Every detail contributed to a warm and inviting atmosphere, making the celebration feel extra special. Residents were greeted with smiles as they entered this beautifully decorated space, instantly making them feel part of something wonderful. The setting itself exuded love and care, perfectly reflecting the essence of Mother’s Day.
Residents indulged in a variety of sweet and savoury delights, including slices, and beautifully arranged three-tiered stands filled with delicious cupcakes. The assortment of flavours and colourful presentations delighted everyone's eyes as well as their taste buds, creating a feast for the senses. Throughout the event, laughter and joyous conversations echoed, reminding us of the strong bonds of friendship and family that make such celebrations so meaningful.
Meet the Team: Introducing NZRN, Payal!

Hi! I'm Payal Lal, a passionate Registered Nurse with eight years of diverse experience in various medical settings, including critical care and geriatric nursing. I was born and raised in the beautiful islands of Fiji, where happiness and a strong sense of community are woven into everyday life. I carry these values with me as I strive to make a positive impact in the lives of my patients, bringing a bit of that island warmth to my nursing practice.
Family is incredibly important to me. I share a special bond with my parents and three siblings, and there truly is no family quite like mine. My elder sister, Aachal, is also a Registered Nurse at Switzer. We were the first in our family to choose nursing as a career. We're proud of the path we've taken and the care we provide to our communities. I graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Nursing and Health Care Science, and in mid-2023, I made the exciting move to New Zealand. I began my journey as a Healthcare Partner/IQN, and by 2024, I was honoured to receive my registration as a New Zealand Registered Nurse while continuing to work at Switzer, where I provide holistic care to elderly residents.
On a personal note, I recently exchanged vows with a wonderful man, surrounded by the blessings of my family. My life philosophy is simple:
"Do no harm if you cannot do good; speak no evil if good cannot be spoken."
This guiding principle shapes both my personal and professional interactions, reminding me to always strive for kindness and compassion. I look forward to continuing my journey in nursing and making a difference in the lives of those I care for.
New volunteers always welcome

The 10 Eden AlternaFve Principles

1. The three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders.
2. An Elder-centred community commits to creaKng a human habitat where life revolves around close and conKnuing contact with people of all ages and abiliKes, as well as plants and animals. It is these relaKonships that provide the young and old alike with a pathway to a life worth living.
3. Loving companionship is the anKdote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to human and animal companionship.
4. An Elder-centred community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the anKdote to helplessness.
5. An Elder-centred community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creaKng an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interacKons and happenings can take place. This is the anKdote to boredom.
6. Meaningless acKvity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essenKal to human health.
7. Medical treatment should be the servant of genuine human caring, never its master.
8. An Elder-centred community honours its Elders by de-emphasising topdown bureaucraKc authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of the Elders or into the hands of those closest to them.
9. CreaKng an Elder-centred community is a never-ending process. Human growth must never be separated from human life.
10. Wise leadership is the lifeblood of any struggle against the three plagues. For it, there can be no subsKtute.
The core concept of the Eden AlternaKve is simple: Care environments are habitats for human beings that should promote health, wellbeing and growth rather than faciliKes where the frail and elderly stagnate and decline.
Switzer believes that providing human companionship, animals, children and plants help to provide opportuniKes for a meaningful life
A calico named Calico J
We call her ‘Cali’ for short. She is quite possibly the friendliest and most vocal cat going around Switzer! She never gets sick of pats or a\enKon – ( just mind the happy dribble!) You’ll find Cali around the laundry if you’d like a cuddle.
