URBAN resident Yolanda Sokhela is a Women’s Health Next Fitness Star finalist, which is hosted by the Women’s Health magazine.

According to the Women’s Health website The Women’s Health Next Fitness Star is a nationwide search for South Africa’s next fitness celebrity – a woman who has the personality, creeds, training mantra and inspirational “fitspo” story to help women fall in love with fitness and learn to celebrate their bodies in the process.

The goal is to find unsung heroes – devoted trainers, coaches and teachers who are changing lives every day, one client at a time – and give them the platform to share their inspirational message with the Women’s Health audience.

Post office celebrates ‘bee­eaters’ with stamps

THE SA Post Office released a set of five stamps celebrating the bee-eaters, last week.

Bee-eaters are some of southern Africa’s most beautiful and interesting birds. This made them excellent subjects for stamps.

The photographs on the stamps were taken by Chris van Rooyen, and were designed by Philatelic Services. The stamps are expected to be

snapped up by stamp collectors and bird lovers.

Bee-eaters are remarkable birds. They catch insects in flight, dig tunnels in sandbanks in which they lay their eggs, and with most species the youngsters remain with their parents to bring up the next generation. Only after that do they start an independent life.

The stamps feature the little bee-

eater, Southern carmine bee-eater, swallowtail bee-eater, the European bee-eater and white-fronted bee-eater.

AMILY planning is considered one of the most important measures one should take to reduce unwanted ba­ bies, teenage pregnancy and for some, fall­ ing pregnant before marriage.

There are various methods women use to prevent falling pregnant ­ from injection, pills, tubal ligation, and one of the newer ones, the “implant” or the “Implanon”.

Contraceptives are not only available at pharmacies, the government also provides them for free.

According to KZN Health Department spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane the im­ plant is implanted just under the skin on the inner upper arm and remains active for three years.

It is provided in public health facilities to women regardless of her socioeconomic status.

“It is a highly effective and reversible contraceptive method.Implanon is a sub­ dermal implant which consists of a single, small semi­rigid white­rod, four centime­ tres in length and two millimetres in diame­ ter.

“Implanon is placed by a trained health care provider.

“It is one of the most reliable birth con­ trol methods currently on the market and does not interfere with sex, but it is impor­ tant to use dual protection since Implanon does not protect against HIV and sexually transmitted infections.”

Pupils learn about road and rail safety

OVER the past month, 30 schools in the South Durban area have learnt all about road and rail safety as part of a campaign to educate primary and secondary school pupils about the danger of not taking safety seriously.

The roadshow visited 20 primary schools and 10 high schools in the South Durban and Umlazi area near high crash sites or railway lines where transgressions are common.

The roadshow, which began on 17 April and ran until mid-May, was a collaborative partnership which saw businesses, local government and various organisations come together to address the high numbers of pupils involved in both rail and road accidents.

The campaign was planned by a team of representatives from Engen, Mondi, Sapref, Prasa, SAPS and eThekwini Municipality’s Transport Authority and Metro Police.

Over the past three years 130 children all under the age of 16 have been injured in traffic crashes in the South Durban area. Statis-

tics from the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) show that 128 children were injured as pedestrians, and 66 as passengers.

“Another area of concern is fatal train accidents either as a result of crossing railway lines or train surfing,” says Paul Makhanya, Engen Stakeholder Liaison Specialist. “Although Engen, Sapref and Mondi have implemented a fencing off programme to prevent access to the railway lines in the South Durban area, train surfing is still a dangerous pastime.”

“We take safety very seriously and believe that this worthy initiative will start to reduce risk-taking and change pupils’ behaviour,” says Engen’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, Mntu Nduvane.

The Echo reporter spoke to a wom­ an at a Chesterville clinic, who wished to re­ main anonymous, who was pregnant but was on the implant.

“I have had an implant for less than three years but was shocked to find I was pregnant. “The reason for having an im­ plant was to not have a baby. I trusted the implant because they said it was safe and reliable, but now I’m stressed because I’m pregnant. “The nurse at the clinic had to immediately remove it now that I am preg­ nant. I will consider using another form of contraceptive after giving birth.”

Sivuyile Duma from Pinetown said: “I have heard a lot of stories regarding the im­ plant.

“Some women said they bleed heavily during their periods now that they have in­

serted the implant.

“Some say the implant has been good for them. I don’t use it and I am not planning on using it in the future.”

Nonhlanhla Gwamanda from Clermont said: “That little stick in your arm looks pain­ ful, I’m on an injection which I re­inject every three months and I’m happy with the way things are.”

Hlongwane from the Department of Health said: “It is universally accepted that almost all medication has side effects. It’s just that people react to it differently.”

Save electricity this winter W

ITH winter fast approaching, the demand on electricity supply is ex­ pected to increase. Residents are therefore urged to use electricity conserva­ tively to ensure a sustained supply to all us­ ers. Individual households can help by achieving reductions in electricity con­ sumption, especially during peak times, by following a few energy saving tips.

This includes replacing incandescent globes with energy efficient compact fluo­ rescent lamps, which use 80% less electrici­ ty to give the same light and lasts six to eight times longer.

Residents are reminded to turn off lights and space heaters when they are not in the room.

They can also use a thermostatically

controlled oil or infrared heater and opt for an electric blanket to warm a bed, instead of a space heater to heat a room.

Remember to switch off the electric blanket when going to bed. It is also impor­ tant to insulate ceilings and seal windows, doors and any cracks.

In winter, opening curtains during the day allows sunshine to heat the room.

Residents who use candles or paraffin stoves for lighting or heating purposes are encouraged to show extreme caution to prevent devastating fires in informal settle­ ments that are experienced around this time of the year.

Fire chief Enock Mchunu said lit candles and paraffin stoves must never be left unat­ tended.

“It is critical that they are never left un­ attended. They must also not be placed near combustible material such as curtains, table clothes or paper. Children should also not be left unattended near a naked light.”

He urged parents not to leave children at home unattended, especially if candles would be used. “Matchboxes should not be lying around within easy reach of children.

Parents who use these heating or lighting systems should not leave their children un­ attended as it can lead to dangerous situa­ tions with dire consequences,” Mchunu said.

He advised residents to contact the emergency services number, at 031 361 0000, to report a fire before trying to extinguish it themselves.

He said in case of fires, residents should

try and get out of the house as quickly as possible, only taking their valuables with if they are within easy reach.

“It is also important to alert your closest neighbours when there is a fire. When re­ porting a fire ensure you provide the correct address. You can also give landmarks to en­ sure firefighters reach you quickly to control the situation,” Mchunu added.

EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede urged residents to play their part and conserve electricity.

She advised those using alternative lighting and heating systems to be careful to prevent fires.

“We all have a role to play. I urge you to please proceed with caution when using candles or paraffin stoves,” the mayor add­

ed.

Save lives, donate blood as World Blood Donor Day approaches KALISHA NAICKER SUBSEQUENT to a successful wellness day in April where the Compass Donor Drive had 11 new blood donors and a total of 22 people donating on the day, they have arranged for a second SANBS blood drive to be held at head office on Friday, June 9 between 9 am and 1 pm in anticipation of World Blood Donor Day on Wednesday, June 14.

According to Dr Thapelo Motshudi, donating blood saves people’s lives.

“A transfusion is needed when people have lost a lot of blood over a short or long period of time, or when they are not able to produce

enough blood cells.

“Examples include women who bleed excessively during pregnancy or delivery, victims of trauma or motor vehicle accidents, patients undergoing surgery and those with anaemia or other illnesses like cancer,” the doctor said.

“It is important to note that blood donors do not get paid, because this has to be an act of selflessness.”

There are four types of blood groups — A, B, AB and O. “These are further categorised as Rh+ or Rh-, based on the Rhesus classification. People with blood group O- can donate blood to everyone and are called universal donors.

Those with blood group AB+ can re-

ceive blood from everyone and are thus called universal recipients.

“Group O is in greater demand and these donors are asked to donate regularly because their blood is especially useful during emergencies, when there is no time to check for compatibility.”

Motshudi said one of the frequently asked questions is can one get HIV from it?

“While nothing is ever completely risk free, the chance of acquiring any disease from a blood transfusion, including HIV, is so low that one can consider it to be negligible.

“Donated blood is rigorously tested for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis, and HIV 1 and 2. Every unit of blood collected goes through the same stringent testing. So, it does not matter if it’s your first time, or if you are a regular donor, your blood still gets tested every time you donate.”

In addition anyone over the age of 16, who weighs at least 50 kg, is healthy, does not have anaemia, is not on certain types of medication and whose social behaviour does not place them at an increased risk of transmitting HIV or hepatitis, can donate.

“Pregnant women and people who have had recent surgery are not allowed to donate.”

THE name Siphokazi Mohapi has be­ come synonymous with soulful sounds, poignant lyrics and her fans will see her performing live at the Vuma FM Concert at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 28 May. Born in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, she moved to Johannesburg in 1999 and enrolled at Sibikwa Community Art Cen­ tre. In 2000, she received a bursary from The National Arts Council, enabling her to enroll at Central Johannesburg Col­ lege, where she completed a diploma in music technology.

Her first entry into the music world was in Japan for a cultural exchange, after which she was introduced to Tshe­

po Tshola and started working profes­ sionally.

Mohapi released her first album, Ubuntu Bam, in 2006 and a year later was the recipient of the best newcomer and best adult contemporary album at the South African Music Awards for her efforts. The album also collected the prizes for best produced album, best newcomers and best female vocalist at the Metro Awards 2007.

She followed Ubuntu Bam with 2008’s Ndinovuyo and 2010’s Ethembeni and is now working on a new release.

Mohapi ­ who will be joined at the concert by Vuma 103 DJ Makhosi Khozi, Linda “The Game” and DJ Andre ­ has

shared the stage with Chaka Khan, Glad­ ys Night, Hugh Masekela, Busi Mhlongo, Angelique Kidjo, Gloria Bosman and Cai­ phas.

Entry to the Vuma FM concert is in­ cluded in the entry to the Royal Show, which runs from Friday, May 26 to Sun­ day, June 4 at the Royal Showgrounds.

However, the lack of funding made it impossible to maintain resulting in the decision to donate the property to Tafta on condition that the organisation renovated the complex.

“Attorneys Garlicke and Bousfield, trustees of The Barns Trust, donated the cottages to Tafta to ensure that Barn’s final wish was realised and Tafta is committed to preserving his legacy.

“Faced with large and costly homes after their children have grown up and moved away, many older people look for affordable new homes that do not compromise on space, quality, or convenience.

“Tafta Barns Cottages seeks to respond to the housing needs of middle-income pensioners, who have sufficient money to live on after retirement but cannot afford to buy a property,” says Shamam.

The cottages have been designed for independent living and are equipped with day security and gardens service, which are both included in the rental.

The beautifully renovated cottages include spacious lounges, wellfitted kitchens with granite counter tops and fully tiled showers and toilets.

The two-bedroom cottages also have an enclosed secure courtyard at the rear, which offers tenants the opportunity to have a small pet.

Tafta further offers a full Ageing in Place package, which includes essential services such as meal delivery, hiring of assistive devices, provision of caregivers and a handyman as required by tenants.

Awareness campaign to reduce water loss DESPITE the recent rains, eThekwini is still affected by the drought and residents are urged to continue to conserve water.

To further spread the message of being water­wise, the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit will be erect­ ing billboards, street pole posters and T­shirts with message of water conservation.

This comes as eThekwini Municipality has been, and still is, beset with grave drought adversity.

As a result, the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit has developed various intervention strategies to mitigate the drought effects including awareness campaigns regarding the importance of conserving water. The campaigns have also raised awareness on the side of residents about the role water plays in social and economic development with the view of changing attitudes and behaviours of citizens. Community meetings have been held with ward councillors and print and electronic campaigns have been undertaken to ensure audibility of the water scarcity message.

There have been scheduled water interruptions from 7pm to 6am in certain areas. The Unit has also set up response teams to repair leaks, water bursts and to address the plight of people on the ground.

Water bills have also been issued with water con­ servation tips and notices.

EThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede has also launched a WhatsApp reporting line to make it easier for consumers to report water leaks, bursts and other related water queries.

However, it has become critical for the unit to ex­ tend and expand its awareness raising drive as part of its multi­pronged information dissemination ap­ proach.

Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infra­ structure Committee Councillor Mondli Mthembu said the water and sanitation unit is enthusiastic about raising awareness of water conservation.

“This message will be taken to all areas including townships where water is being wasted. We believe there will be a drastic drop in water wastage as a re­ sult,” he said. Deputy mayor Fawzia Peer said there are serious drought challenges with collective pro­ grammes needed to change people’s attitudes toward water conservation. Meanwhile, another report was tabled by the Executive Committee for the purchase of static tanks and stands as a drought relief measure.

hired water tankers to weather the storm thus far.

However, to maximise the effectiveness and increase the ability of the Unit to deliver water to areas that are affected by the drought, it has embarked on the roll out of static tanks. These tanks will service drought affected areas. eThekwini Municipality will be entering into a memorandum of agreement with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct engineering testing of innovative sanitation technologies that will improve sanitation services for the poor.

The eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit will col­ laborate closely with the foundation.

The ground­breaking technologies seeks to con­ tribute positively to the climate change induced water crisis on a global scale. The technologies are designed to work off the sewer grid and will use minimal or no water or recycled waste water while at the same time providing the comfort of a normal flush toilet to resi­ dents.

A report tabled at the Executive Committee said the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation wish to play a significant role in solving world sanitation challenges for the more than 2.5 billion people affected by poor or non­existent sanitation services.

The foundation has for the past five years funded an international grand challenge which seeks to rein­ vent toilet technologies.

Over the years a number of prototypes were devel­ oped and tested, resulting in the selection of five tech­ nologies for further engineering testing in the field.

The foundation has selected eThekwini Municipal­ ity to test these ground breaking innovations, recog­ nising the City as a world leader in the sanitation field and has the technical capacity and a track­record in innovation.

According to the report, the memorandum of agreement will be beneficial to eThekwini as the inno­ vative toilets that would meet the aspirational needs of the poor, will be tested in communities in eThekwini for the first time.

The toilets will significantly reduce water con­ sumption and pressure on the environment. All tech­ nology testing funding will be provided by the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. eThekwini will provide local liaison expertise and access to community sites. ­ Supplied

URBAN resident Sinenhlanhla Ngubane (25) recently graduated with a Masters degree in the arts and wrote a thesis titled Being a “Good” Zulu Woman.

Echo reporter chatted to her about life and her career.

NM: You recently graduated with a Master’s degree in art, tell me about yourself and your career choice.

SN: I went to Northlands Girls’ High School and matriculated in 2009. I obtained my undergraduate degree in management and communications at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I also obtained by Honours degree in media and cultural studies and Masters in media and cultural studies from the university. I have been working as a Public Relations intern for the College of Health Sciences at UKZN for the past year.

NM: What made you choose the arts as your career path?

SN: I have always wanted to study media studies, I am obsessed with the media. The goal was to become a journalist, and it still is.

NM:What motivated you to write your

SN: The idea was to target female Zulu students - between the age of 17 and 25 - at a tertiary institution (UKZN) because they are exposed to different ideologies such as feminism. I wanted to pick their brains and find out if their thinking patterns have been influenced by these ideologies or if they still believe that a good Zulu woman is one that takes care of the household cleaning, cooking and raising children.

NM: What does being a Zulu woman mean to you?

SN: I love this question. Being a “good” Zulu woman for me means being able to choose if I want to adhere to the cultural gender norms set out by my culture. Being a good Zulu woman means being able to perform domestic chores, take care of the household and being a loving wife.

A good Zulu woman is one that can maintain having a successful career and taking care of the household.

We should not be defined as being “good” Zulu women just because we are married and have children.

NM: Tell me a bit about your life growing up.

SN: I was raised by a single mother who made sure that my sister and I had everything we ever needed.

My mother taught us how to pray, work extremely hard and have faith in God. Being raised by an independent mother made me the independent, goal driven and hard working person I am today.

NM: What advice would you give to students who are struggling with their studies?

SN: I can’t seem to emphasise this enough.

Do not compare yourself to other students. The biggest mistake we make is to look at other students and that is when we lose focus and start feeling as if we are not good enough.

God has given us all different capabilities and talents because he has a plan for us.

Do your best, stay in your lane and believe in God’s timing.

NOKUTHULA KHANYILE FORMER Bafana Bafana international footballer Derlon Buckley is offering solutions to some of life’s problems in his new tell-all book Delron Buckley, My Life.

The book written by Durban based author Myan Subrayan was launched in Pietermaritzburg at the Midlands Academy of Sport last Thursday.

It gives insight on Buckley’s football journey, a path which saw Buckley, who grew up in Sydenham, Durban; leave South Africa as a 16-year-old to pursue a professional football career in Germany.

“Writing the book is my way of giving back. It is to tell my story and to give people hope and to inspire them in their dreams. I was a boy that grew up with no father in a neighbourhood engulfed with drugs, alcohol and crime but there was no excuse for me not to make it. I had a dream of being a footballer and focused on that dream,” said Buckely.

In the book he said he reveals some of the challenges he was faced with during his tenure in Germany and how he overcame them.

“It was quite difficult at first because at the time Germany wasn’t a

cosmopolitan country, they didn’t speak English at all so I had to communicate with my hands and feet. Everything was just mimicking because they couldn’t speak English. On the field, I couldn’t understand the coach but I knew exactly what was expected of me and I obliged.”

He said it was difficult for him as a youngster to make a name for himself in a foreign country.

“When you come as a foreigner into a team, there is hatred. You are not wanted; the players feel you have come to take someone else’s place. But the best place to win them over is on the pitch.”

Buckley said his hard work soon paid off.

He played for Borussia Dortmund, while he has also represented German side Mainz and Cypriot outfit Anorthosis Famagusta.

He returned to South Africa in 2012 when he signed with Maritzburg United and also played for Bafana Bafana just over 70 times.

“I sunk into depression during my first season with Borussia; I was largely unsuccessful and failed to score in 28 league matches. The fans were booing me and killing myself seemed like the only way out. My wife and I had

rights to host the Tourism Indaba for the next five years.

The announcement was made at the opening of the 2017 Tourism Indaba at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre by President Jacob Zuma last week.

Zuma congratulated Durban’s achievement. “I trust the City will continue utilising this platform in a strategic way to expose more hidden localowned offerings through this Indaba.

It is the largest tourism marketing platform on the African calendar which facilitates the clinching of good business deals.”

He said the country needed such events to fast-track tourism goals which include creating 2.2 million jobs by 2026 and positioning the country as one of the world’s top 20 destinations globally.

Zuma also introduced the new national campaign called We do tourism to further develop the sector which has over the years proved to be one of the key contributors to the country’s economy. eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede was happy about Dur-

ban being the home of the indaba for another five years.

“We are happy to be afforded the opportunity to host the indaba which attracts key tourism decision makers from around the world.”

She said hosting the indaba had a positive impact on the City as it injects around R200 million into the economy.

Commenting on the announcement, chief executive officer of the Durban ICC, Lindiwe Rakharebe said: “We are thrilled, honoured and proud to be the host venue for indaba for the next five years.

Having been home to Africa’s Top Travel show since 1992, it is wonderful news that we will remain its host for the next five years at least.”

“Indaba is one of the highlights of our year and is the ideal showcase of the amazing tourism offerings available in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, not to mention that the event is also the premier platform to discuss the growth and development of our tourism industry in the years ahead,” added Rakharebe.

CE It! is a study guide series that is a one-stop resource giving pupils all they need to “ace” their exams.

The guides where launched across the country last week. The creators, Shuter and Shooter, have been in the text book industry for many years and they understand curriculums and what pupils need.

By having a good study guide to help them revise and understand the subject content, much of the examination anxiety felt by both parents and pupils can be reduced.

Parents now have the opportunity to equip their children with relevant study resources that are easy to use, easy to understand and will help their child to excel.

QASA launches “EISH” campaign KALISHA NAICKER SUBSEQUENT to the article published in the Fever recently, and the high number of misuse of disable parking bays, the Quad­ Para Association of South Africa launched the “EISH” Campaign, to encourage the community to take action when disability discrimination occurs.

Ari Seirlis CEO of QASA says that the campaign uses a wheelchair Lego man in various environments identifying prob­ lems and issues experienced by persons with physical disabilities.

“The word ‘EISH’ is used in South Afri­ can English and Afrikaans to express exas­ peration or disbelief. The word was first transliterated from the Xhosa language to Afrikaans, and then into South African En­ glish.

“The key issues and themes are: Jus­ tice, Transport, Access Parking and Em­ ployment, as people with disabilities need to be able to exist in a barrier free environ­ ment, free of infrastructure barriers, free of any limitations and discrimination.

In terms of justice, Seirlis said that ac­ cess to legal support, policing agencies, the judicial system, human rights commis­ sion’s and correctional services are essen­ tial for the success and implementation of the Equality Act for people with disabili­ ties.

He said that access to transport is a hu­ man right and inaccessible transport in South Africa is the biggest barrier facing people with physical disabilities especially

The study guide series is now available for grades 8 to 12 and include the following major examinable subjects: accounting, Afrikaans FAL, business studies, economic and management sciences, English FAL, geography, history, Zulu FAL, life sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, physical sciences, technology and tourism.

ROJECT Dignity’s aim to distribute reusable sanitary pads to young women across the country received a major boost when renowned pharmacy, health and beauty store Clicks decided to partner with the organisation behind the Girls on the Go campaign.

Run by the Clicks Helping Hand Trust, the Girls on the Go campaign will assist with sponsorship of thousands of reusable sanitary packs being donated to disadvantaged communities across the country every two months. “We’ve partnered with Project Dignity from 2015, and for the 2017 financial year we aim to distribute 10 000 packs of sanitary wear to needy recipients,” explained Germinah Nyikana, Helping Hand Trust manager.

“The decision to partner with Project Dignity was prompted by the organisation’s success in reducing school absenteeism rates. With access to proper sanitary wear, young women don’t have to miss school during their menstrual cycle, as has been happening previously.”

Project Dignity forms the non-profit extension of Subz Pants and Pads —

an organisation founded by Sue Barnes that seeks to improve the lives of school-going girls by donating sponsored packs of reusable, eco-friendly sanitary pads and accompanying panties.

The organisation was established after Barnes learned about the negative educational impact a lack of sanitary products is having on thousands of school children.

Developed, designed and manufactured by Barnes, the Subz pads are made of five layers of hydrophilic fabric, which makes them extremely absorbent to prevent leakage. Together with the 100% cotton panties, they are patented and have an SABS absorbency approval.

“It is so rewarding, having the privilege of meeting with young women and donating something that makes life that much easier, but we cannot meet the need without the help of organisations like Clicks,” said Barnes.

“They are truly committed to improving the lives of young South Africans and restoring dignity along the way through initiatives such as Girls on the Go.” Every two months, Clicks purchas-

schools based in Molweni, KwaZuluNatal. The Girls on the Go campaign is set to continue for a further three years. This leg of the campaign will be headed by Mooi Mthethwa, a devoted volunteer of Project Dignity and motivational speaker with Nation Changers — an outreach extension of City Hill Church in Hillcrest.

Through Nation Changers in partnership with Project Dignity, Mthethwa assists in identifying schools in the area where young women can benefit from the Subz packs’ donations.

She attends the school activations with the Project Dignity team where she gives educational and motivational talks to the girls in Zulu.

The remainder of the Subz packs sponsored by Clicks have been donated to schoolchildren at Marianridge Secondary School, Brookdale Secondary School as well as schools supported by The Kloof Rotary Annes.

The donations, which were made between April 18 and May 9, include a Subz Pants and Pads menstrual management kit that consists of two pairs of panties, as well as six reusable sanitary pads that will last the girls for the next three to five years. -Supplied.
