HE Pinetown Fever reporter Nosipho Mkhize spoke to Matthew Willman about his first autobiography. Matthew previously published a number of photographic compilations accompanied by commentary. Here for the first time he opens up about his private world and said the book will make you laugh while at the same time scratching your head and wondering how on earth it occurred. NM: Where were you born? MW: In Durban. NM: What childhood memories do you have? MW: I grew up in Pinetown and attended local schools. I went to Natal Technikon and studied photography. NM: What are some of the challenges you face as a photographer? MW: I came from nowhere, had no money, worked as a restaurant waiter while trying to make it as a photographer in the industry. The biggest challenge was not financial - the biggest was getting people to believe you are good enough and up for the task. Second is having to constantly believe in yourself and not doubt what you capable of doing. NM: Tell me about when you first met Nelson Mandela. MW: That would give too much away, read
Creating jobs through the CWP programme IN its endless endeavour to create job op portunities, eThekwini Municipality has employed 1000 people to be part of the City’s Community Work Programme (CWP) that ensures a cleaner Durban. Mayor Zandile Gumede congratulated 40 CWP supervisors last week who will en sure the smooth rollout of the programme in 40 municipal wards as a pilot project. The induction, by the Department of Co operative Governance and Traditional Af fairs and the Insika Foundation, held at the Durban City Hall educated team leaders about the positive impact this innovative government programme has on people’s lives. Gumede said the supervisors will be working with a team of 25 in each ward to clean schools, clinics and other government buildings. “We currently have a group of 1000 pro gramme participants that will work two days a week and will earn a stipend of R 700 a month. “This forms part of the poverty elevation programme as most people that are part of this programme were selected from our community upliftment programmes, in cluding ward committees, Operation Suku ma Sakhe and Masakhane programmes,” said Gumede. CWP project coordinator Sihle Cossa said: “Their work in communities will be in line with the Mayor’s Operation Khuculul’iT heku Campaign. “Over and above cleaning municipal buildings and schools, they will also work in community gardens. This is aimed at en couraging people to venture into farming.” Supplied.
the book - its all in there. NM: What is one word you would use to describe yourself MW: Sensitive. NM: Would you call yourself a photographer, a storyteller or author? MW: All of the above, all three tie in to my work today as a documentary photographer. I first go out to photograph, and I return with stories and experiences that are incredibly rich. This in turn allows me to write and share my images and stories. NM: Do you have other hobbies? MW: Reading, outdoor pursuits and music. NM: Do you have anything to pass on to the youth. MW: Two words define the growth and development of poverty, those words are ‘apathy’ and ‘indifference’. The only fruit that comes from those two words is poverty. You are at greatest risk in your life if you manifest those attitudes and outlook on life. Remove them so you can make yourself relevant to others.
