Telling Your Story This issue has a With A Theme special focus on wedding themes.

Having a wedding theme can be a creative way to plan your wedding. A theme can also make some decisions easier by sticking to the color scheme, food, and decorations to match.

Themes are very versatile, you can stick to them fully or just use them as an accent. For example, Star Wars you can dress as Leia and have Chewbacca walk you down the aisle, or you can just have a Death Star groom’s cake. I love seeing how couples incorporate the things they love into the day they marry the person they love.

Themes can be as unique and customizable as you want them to be. It can be a great place to jumpstart your creativity and planning. There are some great themes in the real weddings of this edition, we hope they inspire your planning.

Carley & Michael Like so many modern couples, they met with a little assistance from technology in Washington DC (thanks Bumble!). On their first date they met for a glass of wine at a neighborhood restaurant, and it went so well that Carley agreed to meet Mike at his favorite place in DC for date number two, Nationals Baseball Park. Neither Mike or Carley can remember who won the game, but three and a half hours later they were told by security it was time to leave.

Carley and Michael chose Athens as the location for their wedding because Carley grew up in Bogart, attended UGA and has lots of family close by. Also, it was a way to be near Carley’s grandmothers and visit her 98 (now 99) year old grandmother Grace on the wedding day. It was so special to be able to share it with her, even if she couldn’t be at the wedding in person.

Having an interfaith wedding (Jewish and Christian) they wanted a venue that felt spiritual but wasn’t affiliated with a religion. The Day Chapel at The State Botanical Gardens felt that way to them. A funny coincidence is that all the wood in the chapel is from Georgia (where Carley grew up) and the slate floors are from Pennsylvania (where Mike grew up). The great room/conservatory was perfect for the reception because you could be inside and cool, but feel like you were outside. Perfect for dancing to the amazing band.

Planning the wedding long distance, they chose vendors they knew would do a great job.

They needed the catering to easily accommodate the needs of the guests who had dietary restrictions. Carley and Michael LOVE ice cream and chose to have an ice cream sundae bar for dessert complete with lactose free ice cream so that all of our guests could enjoy the deliciousness. Their wedding coordinator helped to put their minds at ease and they really didn’t have to worry about a thing and could fully focus on making this important commitment to each other.

Carley and Michael wanted their wedding to have a true feeling of unity and joy. Carley’s mom said it best when she told them, “your wedding weekend felt like a big hug!”

Planning an epic dinner starts here: Make the dinner your own: From location to food, decor, and music, make choices that reflect you as a couple. Start dreaming of what will make the evening relaxing and fun for YOU! Dinner from a food truck, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a bluegrass band?

Decide who’s hosting: In recent years some traditions have shifted. Couples may plan and pay for the dinner themselves or pass the responsibility to family. As a couple discuss your preferences together, choose a host, and set a budget.

Atmosphere: Consider a location that has a special significance. Guests love hearing these stories and attending events in unique settings. Finding a location with an outdoor area sets the mood for your guests to relax and mingle (BONUS if it allows time for a quick rehearsal)! Do you want to pass the mic for toasts (or roasts), show a video or slideshow, or give out gifts? Remember to ask if the venue has a sound system and projectors.

These parties begin with an intimate dinner and then more friends and family join in the celebration.

Menu: You may consider incorporating food that reflects your cultural heritage or serving dishes from your favorite locale.

Light hors d’oeuvres instead of dinner may reduce the cost.

Does the venue allow outside caterers or require hiring a specific company? What’s their policy for alcohol service?

As a couple take time to review your preferences in each of these areas. Schedule tours to see venues in person. Booking a location 4-6 months in advance is highly recommended.

Wedding Traditions from Around the World.

by Andrée Kosak, Trumps Catering In my continuing interest and research of wedding traditions, it has been fascinating to learn about different cultural traditions from around the world. I thought I’d share some of them with you.

Mexico In Mexico, it’s not unusual for the bride to carry two bouquets. One she carries for herself and the second one as a tribute to the Virgin Mary, in hopes that she might bless the unity.

Also in Mexico, the “ Lazo ” is used. It is a kind of rope that can be made from something simple like a ribbon, simple or adorned to symbolically join the bride and groom. It is placed around the necks of the couple during their vows. It is also called “LACE UNITY.” I found this tradition or a variation of it in several different countries.

Philippines In the Philippines, the bride and groom each hold onto a white dove and release them simultaneously to represent a long, peaceful and harmonious life together.

Wedding coins are called arras and it is customary for the groom to give the bride 13 coins to symbolize their mutual prosperity.

Traditionally, it was like a dowry and also symbolizes his promise to support her and their family.

Germany

India

In Germany, newlyweds must instantly put their bond to the test by working together to saw a log in half in front of all their guests.

The act is intended to showcase the bride and groom’s ability to work together and face the obstacles that may come throughout their marriage.

In a traditional Indian wedding, the bride’s sister(s) plays a trick on the groom by stealing his shoes once he enters the wedding tent.

The groom must bribe the sister(s) to return his shoes before he exits.

On the eve of the wedding friends and family may gather for a party called a Polterabend.

This normally involves food, drink and the breaking of plates and other tableware (with the exception of glasses and crystal). The bride and groom are expected to clean up the shattered plates together thus showing that they can get along well. It’s also been said that this custom brings good luck to the soon-to-be-married couple.

Scotland In this Scottish tradition, the bride, groom, or both are taken out on the day before their wedding, plied with alcohol, and covered in treacle, ash, feathers, and flour by friends and family. The celebratory mess was originally carried out to avoid evil spirits and bring good luck.

The saying ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’, and a lucky sixpence in her shoe came from Scotland. Brides carried a lucky sixpence in their shoe so they would always be well off financially in their marriage.

As part of the elaborate and visually stunning traditional Indian wedding, brides and other female attendees will have henna drawn in intricate designs to the hands and feet. These intricate designs symbolize joy, beauty, spiritual awakening and love of the occasion.

South Africa With its many nations and tribes, Africa is very rich in different wedding traditions.

An old African proverb says, "A man without a wife is like a vase without flowers” … I like that.

The Zulu people are the largest South African nation. At a traditional Zulu wedding the Zulu bride wears a traditional red headdress which until recently was made with some of her mother's hair. A Zulu bride will sometimes changes her clothes three times.

She is doing this to impress her in-laws.

In another South African tradition that I thought was kind of heartwarming, the parents of the bride and groom bring fire from their own fireplaces to the home of the newlyweds. The bride and groom use the flames provided from their childhood homes to ignite the hearth in their new home together.

Japan In a beloved Japanese tradition of ‘San-SanKudo’, the bride and groom take three sips each from three flat sake cups, after which their parents do the same, bonding the families together.

Another highlight of a Japanese ceremony is a rosary with 21 beads that represent the couple, their families and Buddha all joined on one string to symbolize the union of the families. Part of the ceremony involves honoring the parents with offerings of flowers, a toast, and a letter expressing their love and gratitude. The crane is a symbol of longevity and prosperity and so 1,001 gold origami cranes are folded to bring luck, good fortune, longevity, fidelity, and peace to the marriage.

Easy to spot on social media these days, engagement photo shoots tend to be well thought out down to the location, outfits and style chosen by the couple. Some couples opt for themes, coordinating outfits or matching colors while others simply wear something that suits their personalities.

No one can dispute the importance of wedding day photos but remember, being engaged is an exciting time too. Why not have photos to look back on this very special time in your life? In addition to engagement announcements, these photos can be used for save the dates, wedding websites, personal profile photos, invitations or put on display at the reception.

Locations can be chosen that are meaningful to the couple, anywhere from a favorite restaurant, park, downtown areas, where they had their first kiss, a favorite pastime or even at the proposal location. Have fun with it!

Another benefit to engagement photo sessions is getting to know and trust your photographer before your wedding day.

Getting to know your photographer in advance ensures they are a good fit for you as a couple. Being in front of a camera on your wedding day with a photographer you’ve never met can be very unnerving. Can you imagine not knowing who is going to walk in with a camera to capture one of the most memorable days of your life? An engagement session will let you know what to expect, allow you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and help ease a little tension on your big day.

Everyone has a budget so be certain your photographer is a good fit for you, in your budget and can work with your style and location of choice!

Larissa and Chris They met through mutual friends as teenagers and started dating. A few years after graduating, Chris joined the military and Larissa fully supported his dedication to our country. After basic training, during a visit home, the couple went on a trip to Savannah. As they were walking down River Street Chris kept asking Larissa if she loved him. Chris dropped down on one knee and proposed. A crowd gathered around the couple and cheered when she said YES!! It was all very sweet.

Chris was stationed in Fort Hood Texas and promptly deployed to Iraq. When he returned, Larissa moved there to be with him. As he was preparing to deploy a second time they decided to get married at the court house. They planned on doing a wedding with friends and family back in Georgia when he came home for R&R. When he deployed, Larissa moved back to Georgia and started planning the wedding. Unfortunately, Chris was injured and they had to cancel the wedding.

After a few years of recovery and healing Larissa and Chris decided it was time to celebrate their union in their church surrounded by loved ones. Larissa thoroughly enjoyed planning the wedding she had envisioned. On their ninth anniversary they had the wedding of their dreams. The ceremony was an intimate gathering held at St. Anna’s Catholic Church which both attended since they were young. The reception was held in their beloved home town, Monroe where they ate, drank and celebrated with their guests. The day was absolutely perfect. Larissa and Chris felt it was made possible with help from their amazing family, friends and awesome vendors.

Robin & Tim Their fairy-tale romance began at a Super Bowl party in 2018. They were engaged in September of the same year and married in June the following year. What a whirlwind of a love story they share!

Robin always loved weddings. The dancing, the merriment and joy.

Robin and Tim share a love so pure and sweet it was important to find the right place to create the most magical of moments and make her wedding dreams come true. Searching for farm wedding venues in Georgia, she was anxious about the tight planning timeline and was feeling very discouraged about the venue search process. The second she set foot on the property at Cloverleaf Farms with rolling pastures, pecan grove, tree-lined lanes, a vineyard, perennial flower borders and the formal, brick-enclosed courtyard garden, she started to envision their wedding and for the first time vividly imagined and created a picture in her mind of how the day would unfold.

Their wedding day was absolutely perfect. Maybe the curvilinear lines of the garden inspired by the Cloverleaf icon brought them luck.

Everything Robin had envisioned was brought to life. Every single detail was taken care of. The timeline, the flowers, and the food was INCREDIBLE. Robin and Tim’s wedding day will forever go down as one of the best days of our lives.

Save-the-dates give your guests a friendly heads-up. They are not always necessary, but are never a bad idea. Your guests may decide to turn your destination wedding into a getaway trip, so those save-the-dates can be sent up to a year in advance.

There is such a thing as too early! Send invitations so that your guests’ maximum anticipation lines up with your big day. Invitations for destination weddings should be sent far enough in advance for your guests to make their travel plans.

Your RSVP deadline will depend on how much lead time your wedding professionals need.

The first one to consider is your caterer’s meal count. Check with each vendor to determine when they need a final number and set the RSVP return date for a week before that.

Believe it or not, you’ll start receiving gifts before you even walk down the aisle! Send their thank you cards immediately to minimize your workload after the wedding. Once you’re back from your honeymoon, kick into high gear to get them out no later than six weeks after the wedding.

Rachel & Timothée Rachel hails from Cobh, the town on the south coast of Ireland, from which the Titanic made its final stop before its fateful end. The French groom, Timothée was born to French parents in Luxembourg. The couple met while completing their Masters of Music at the Utrecht Conservatory in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The wedding guests were, predominantly Irish and French family members, but also included friends from Ireland, France, Spain the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Germany, UK and the US. The couple was married on Fota island in County Cork, Ireland. The island of Fota was a childhood haunt for Rachel, so it was an obvious choice for the wedding. Fota House, where the marriage ceremony took place, had served as a hunting lodge for the aristocratic Smith-Barry family. Music made the couple who they are today. On their wedding day, that sentiment was easily felt from the music performed by an ensemble made up of friends and family, including Rachel’s father and brother as well as friends from the couple’s student days at the Utrecht Conservatory provided.

The reception kicked off with aunts and uncle from the French side performing a song together. Ceili dancing was the first activity on the dance floor with the upbeat and mesmerizing sounds of a Cork-based folk band and proved to be the ideal ice-breaker that transcended language barriers and age-gaps. There was even a spontaneous jam session involving four fiddle-players along with the band – namely Rachel, her father, her brother and a childhood friend! There were ample laughter and tears all around!

The Irish-French couple who met in the Netherlands, where they currently live, had a magical day to remember, surrounded by friends and family from all over the world.

Alice & Dustin The couple met through their church, more specifically through two of their dear friends saying “oh yeah you’d be great together.” After dating for several months, Dustin asked Alice to marry him on Dewees Island, South Carolina, a location of a favorite date. Not only was it a picturesque setting, the end of a dock overlooking the marsh at sunset, he had a special ring box made so she wouldn’t guess what was in his pocket.

He successfully hid photographers to capture the first moments of their engagement.

When they arrived back at the beach house, Dustin had arranged for their parents and those two dear friends with their spouses to be there. He also had them decorate the house with photographs and flowers and they celebrated with a BBQ lunch.

Alice and Dustin wanted to focus on the people attending their ceremony and their marriage; keeping their wedding simple allowed them to maintain their values. The wedding venue has a beautiful setting and in-house amenities making it uncomplicated by providing all items necessary for setup and ample delicious selections for catering.

They were able to select additional vendors that they already knew (and bonus, a part of their church). It was a true family affair with the bride’s mother and and aunts put together the bouquets and corsages and with both parents escorting Alice down the aisle. Pictures of loved one who had passed where also present.

The couple had two goals for their reception. They wanted to stay together all night and speak to as many guests as they could. After cutting the cake, Alice and Dustin passed servings out to each guest, taking time for a small conversation. What fun it was for them to see their months of work in action as many of their dearest people gathered together in celebration! Alice and Dustin love to travel so they invited guests to pin a map with a favorite destination and a description of their choice. Guests where encouraged to write out a prayer and include it on the prayer wall. The map and prayer wall are in their home as reminders of their wedding.
