Letter from the Dean The cover of our newsletter, featuring a springtime view of Rhodes Tower, surrounded by blue skies, bright evergreens, and red flowers, presents a sharp contrast to the frozen lake and snowy landscape now outside my office window, the result of the coldest February on record in Cleveland. But while the harsh winter Cleveland weather is not conducive to outside activity, it certainly has not affected the inside activity of this college. A look through this newsletter confirms that CLASS is a hub of life and ongoing productive activity, even during the winter months. The newsletter also reflects well the diversity of college activities, whether in the social sciences, the humanities, or the fine arts.

It shows, for example, how our colleagues in economics not only write cutting-edge publications (such as Myong Chang’s new book A Computational Model of Industry Dynamics) but also serve as hosts to important academic gatherings. Indeed, the college became a center of economic theorizing last November, when Bill Kosteas and his colleagues hosted the sixth Northeast Ohio Economics Workshop, bringing together economists from most of the Northeast Ohio colleges and universities with representatives of the Cleveland branch of the Federal Reserve Bank.

It shows, moreover, how our colleagues in Modern Languages (soon to become the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures) have been active in seeking external funding to expand our offerings in the teaching of world languages. Professor Abed Tayyara and his colleagues wrote a successful $190,000 grant proposal for the U.S. Department of Education, which will help the college establish a new major program in Arabic, an important program in an urban area that has one of the largest Arab and Middle Eastern populations in the country. We have already hired a second professor of Arabic to help us inaugurate the program.

It also shows how the arts continue to thrive at CSU. The construction of our new fine arts campus has already started to pay big dividends, one of which is that we were able to attract a major college theatre festival to our campus in January. The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival put CSU arts at center stage by attracting nearly 1,200 students and faculty to campus from throughout the northeast region of the country (Region 2). By all accounts, the festival was a phenomenal success, and it would not have been possible without the existence of our fine arts campus as well as the tremendous dedication of Lynn Deering and her colleagues in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

It shows, finally, how the college’s students continue to be active and engaged. Made possible by funding opportunities secured by the office of Vice President Byron White, the college is sending thirty-five of its students to internships with government and private non-profit agencies.

Internships provide what has been called a “high-impact” learning experience, and we know that these kinds of learning experiences are the best way for a college to improve the success of its students. We are committed to doing just that.

So, despite current weather conditions, the springtime picture of a strong Rhodes Tower arising from a green foreground turns out to be both appropriate and iconic. It effectively presents the impressive dynamism of a diverse college, which remains strong, productive, and ever green throughout the entire year.

A Computational Model of Industry Dynamics

by Myong-Hun Chang The economics literature on industry dynamics contains a wide array of empirical works identifying a set of stylized facts. There have been several attempts at constructing analytical models to explain some of these regularities. These attempts are highly stylized and limited in scope to keep the analyses tractable.

A general model of industry evolution capable of generating firm and industry behavior that can match the data is needed.

This book endeavors to explain many well-documented aspects of the evolution of industries over time. It uses an agent-based computational model in which artificial industries are created and grown to maturity in silico.

While the firms in the model are assumed to have bounded rationality, they are nevertheless adaptive in the sense that their experience-based R&D efforts allow them to search for improved technologies. Given a technological environment subject to persistent and unexpected external shocks, the computationally generated industry remains in a perennial state of flux. The main objective of this study is to identify patterns that exist in the movements of firms as the industry evolves over time along the steady state in which the measured behavior of the firms and the industry stochastically fluctuate around steady means.

The computational model developed in this book is able to replicate many of the stylized facts from the empirical industrial organization literature, particularly as the facts pertain to the dynamics of firm entry and exit. Furthermore, the model allows examination of cross-industry variations in entry and exit patterns by systematically varying the characteristics of the market and the technological environment within which the computationally generated industry evolves. The model demonstrates that the computational approach based on boundedly rational agents in a dynamic setting can be useful and effective in carrying out both positive and normative economic analysis.

Cleveland State University On October 24, 2014 Lynn Deering and Eric Ziolek presented a TEDx talk entitled “Cooking Up Some Music and Dance” as part of the first TEDx event at CSU. Their talk dealt with the creative process, using the television cooking show “Chopped” as the inspiration for showing how using a limited number of ideas can result in a new work. Deering’s choreography to Ziolek’s new music was performed by graduate students, dancer Sarah Carey and clarinetist Deanna Sirkot.

The Cleveland State University Poetry Center is excited to announce their brand new website, which can be found at www.csupoetrycenter.com.

It includes a complete listing of the nearly 200 titles published by the Center over the last 40+ years, current author news and information, a platform for student reviews and interviews, guidelines for their three annual book contests (which are currently open for submissions), the ability (for the first time ever!) to purchase books online, information about internships, as well as—perhaps of most interest to our literature-loving faculty and students—the Poetry Center’s spring reading series schedule.

Please share the new site with students and CLASS would love to see you at the second poetry reading of the year which will take place on Friday, March 6 at 7:00 pm in the The Galleries at CSU. It will feature Chloe Honum (winner of the 2013 CSU Poetry Center First Book Prize), author of The Tulip-Flame and Dora Malech, author of Shore Ordered Ocean and Say So (CSU Poetry Center, 2011).

n October 2014 the Arabic program, which is housed in Cleveland State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), was granted the prestigious Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages (UISFL) award.

The grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, aims to financially fund international studies and foreign languages and strengthen proficiency in critical languages and global competitive education. The UISFL grant that CSU received totals $190,000 and is given for a period of two years (10/2014 – 10/2016).

The award money will be used to achieve eight major objectives:

1) grow the Arabic program and enhance language proficiency

2) create a translation certificate/concentration

3) recruit and hire a new college lecturer in Arabic

4) strengthen and expand community outreach programs

5) promote Arabic language study abroad and student exchange programs

6) develop and implement summer workshops and courses

7) widen efforts in student recruitment and professional development and

8) expand library resources and Arabic teaching materials.

The Arabic major at CSU will attract students from the Greater Cleveland area. This interest in the Arabic program at CSU is strengthened by the strategic location of CSU and the need for proficient graduates in Arabic language and culture. As one of the most diverse cities in Ohio, Cleveland has one of the largest Arab and Middle Eastern populations in the country.

Furthermore, the Arabic major at CSU will be one of the few programs in Northeastern Ohio. In fact, the only academic institution to offer a major in Arabic is the University of Notre Dame (UND). However, the Arabic major offered at UND consists of only three years of Arabic classes complemented with classes in Middle Eastern Studies. The Arabic major will also serve a number of departments and interdisciplinary programs at CSU. For example, to successfully complete a minor in Middle Eastern Studies, students have to study at least four semesters of Arabic or another Middle Eastern language. The Political Science Department offers international programs and concentrations related to the Middle East and the Arab World.

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the Department of Economics hosted the sixth Northeast Ohio Economics (NOE) Workshop. The first NOE Workshop took place in November of 2007. The event was held annually through 2010, after which the workshop has been held every other year. With the exception of the 2009 workshop, which was hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Cleveland State has hosted each workshop. The workshop brings together economists from area universities and the Federal Reserve Bank to present and discuss working research papers in all fields of economics.

(Kent State University) presented an empirical investigation into the effect of the Massachusetts health care act on business activity in the state, Nancy Haskell (University of Dayton) discussed the effect of being socioeconomically and racially different on health behavior and outcomes, and Francesco Renna (University of Akron) presented the results of a model analyzing the effect of rising premiums on take-up rates for employer-sponsored health insurance.

The Department of Economics hosted the sixth Northeast Ohio Economics Workshop.

Last November’s program consisted of eight papers covering a wide variety of topics. In the morning session Anteneh T. Tesfaw (Oberlin College) presented a paper on intergenerational land transfer motives on land conservation in Ethiopia, while Yogesh Uppal (Youngstown State University) discussed his paper “Do criminal representatives hinder or improve public good outcomes for their constituency? Evidence from Indian states” and A.J. Sumell (Youngstown State University) presented an analysis of the determinants of faculty teaching evaluations.

The early afternoon session contained three papers in the area of Health Economics. Nadia Greenhalgh-Stanley

The day ended with a presentation by Joshua Austin from Ohio University titled “Controlling for Selection Bias in Merger Synergy Estimation” and Jenny Hawkins from Case Western Reserve University titled “Antitrust Enforcement During the Great Depression.” In all, scholars from eight different universities throughout Ohio participated in the program.

The program was organized by Vasilios D. Kosteas from CSU’s Economics Department. Professor Kosteas is also the founder of the workshop. Several of our own faculty members have participated in the workshop over the years.

The department plans to build on the continued success of the workshop and looks forward to the seventh event, which is tentatively scheduled for November 2016.

CL AS S’s M e e t N ’ G re e t Each year the Student Government Association (SGA) requires senators to do a project for the college they are representing. On December 5, 2014 the SGA College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Senators Kenneth Philpott and Deanna Silmi organized a Meet N’ Greet with Dean Gregory Sadlek and CLASS Advisors Michelle Knapik and Stephanie Triplett.

This event was held in the CSU Student Center where students had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Dean and CLASS advisors. In addition to meeting CLASS administration, students were able to pick up a free CLASS 10-year anniversary T-shirt and a slice of pizza.

There was a great turnout with more than 250 students in attendance. The students gave positive feedback about the event and hoped there would be another in the spring.

47 th Annual Region 2 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival

K C A C T F With school out of session and many businesses closed for vacation, the first week of January can be fairly quiet in Playhouse Square, but not this year. Over 1200 college theatre students, faculty, and staff filled downtown with the energy that only theatre people have, as they attended the 47th Annual Region 2 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) hosted by Cleveland State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

KCACTF was founded in 1969 to improve the quality of college theatre across the country. Its approximately 40,000 members are divvied up into various regions, and Region 2 is comprised of Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. From January 2 to January 6, members participated in workshops, attended lectures, created new work, and saw specially selected mainstage productions from various institutions in the region. CSU’s fall production of The Dybbuk was selected from among over 60 entries and 20 finalists to be among seven plays performed at the festival. It was one of only three that were unanimously voted in by the festival selection committee.

Among all the daylong activity choices for actors, directors, designers, technicians, playwrights, dramaturgs, and academics, one of the most important is competition for the prestigious Irene Ryan Scholarship Award. CSU had several students go through the grueling 2-day process of selection and elimination, and acting major Cody Kilpatrick Steele was one of only two of our students selected to go to the final round in the last decade.

“It was a great learning experience,” said Steele. “It was amazing to see so many people from across the country come together for the festival. They loved our facilities. They told us how lucky we were to be right there on Playhouse Square.” This sentiment was echoed shortly after the festival by the Region 2 Chair, Dr. Scott Mackenzie of Westminster College: “I have heard nothing but great reviews and wishes we were coming back next year. You have great kids and wonderful spaces. I am quite jealous.”

Being the first university in Ohio to host KCACTF was a major step closer to attaining the national attention that the department has been pursuing. As Interim Chair Lynn Deering stated, “Being selected to host the festival and to perform The Dybbuk is a reflection of the growth of Cleveland State University’s Theatre Arts program over the past decade. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the high-quality experiences our students gain through CSU’s unique partnership with Playhouse Square.”

Internships

for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Cleveland State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) has received $206,000 to expand internship opportunities for their students. Currently, thirty-five CLASS students will be placed in paid internships with government and private non-profit agencies through the Career Success Network’s new Career Ready Internship Program. The internships are subsidized by grants from the Fenn Educational Fund of the Cleveland Foundation ($113,908) and the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation ($92,000).

Students who have a GPA of 2.8 or above and a demonstrated need for financial aid may apply by sending their resume to the Career Success Network at csngrants@csuohio.edu. Students working in the manufacturing field and traveling 45 miles or more each way to work may also apply for one of a limited number of stipends to defray travel costs. Review of applications for spring internships and travel stipends began on Friday, February 20, 2015.

These internships are part of a larger effort by the Career Success Network to raise awareness and opportunities for students earning degrees in the liberal arts and social sciences to make use of their unique skills and knowledge in a variety

of workplaces. A growing body of research shows that students who have learned to write well, think critically, and see the world from the perspective of the liberal arts and social sciences prove themselves to be valuable employees. By mid-career, these graduates tend to earn as much or more than graduates with what are often seen as more applied or technical degrees. The Career Ready Internship Program will help expand awareness of this reality among students, faculty, and potential employers.

Internships provide students with experience, additional skills, and relationships that often lead to jobs after graduation. They also help students identify additional skills and knowledge they can gain before graduation. And successful internships can create new partnerships and broaden existing ones between the University and important organizations in the region.

The Career Success Network, along with the Office of Community Engagement, have partnered with five regional organizations—Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, Cleveland Water Alliance, Business Volunteers Unlimited, Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, and Northeast Ohio Mayors and City Managers Association—to identify paid internship opportunities among their members’ organizations, many of which may not have hired interns previously.

On the Road From Philly to Hartford and New York!

In October 2014, representatives from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences headed to the east coast to visit with alumni and friends.

Dean Greg Sadlek had the opportunity to meet with some alumni and friends in New York City last October: - Catching up with Rajiv Joseph, who recently established an endowed scholarship in honor of his parents—the W. Benoy and Suzanne Joseph Endowed Scholarship for Music and Theatre.

- Dining at the restaurant Bear with sister and brother alumni, Natasha and Sasha Pogrebinsky (History and Social Studies). Natasha is the Executive Chef and Owner of Bear, featuring the ingredients, inspirations, and traditions of Eastern Europe, primarily Russia and Ukraine.

- Afterwards, Dean Sadlek met with Nick Kovijanic, Joseph Stuczynski, and Cyd Upson, who are all in the communication industry working for A+E Networks, MSNBC, and Fox News respectively.

Alumni Updates Keith L. Vencel (’81 BA Social Work) is a Senior Talent Acquisition Consultant with Vanderbilt University and Medical Center. His article, “Employment for Veterans and Families: What’s Your Next Step?” was published in Talent Acquisition Excellence Essentials (11/2014).

Mark Lantz (’87 BA English and ’90 MA Communication) is the Founder and Partner at Factory Detroit Inc., an agency specializing in advertising, marketing strategy, and branding. Mark was also one of the creators of the tourism campaign, “Pure Michigan” while he was Chief Strategy Officer at McCann Erickson in Detroit.

Dr. Adam J. Banks (’92 BA English) is Associate Professor of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Media at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. William A. McKinney (’93 BA Anthropology) is Founder and Executive Director of the Innovative Solutions Collective (ISC) in Philadelphia. The ISC is comprised of organizations committed to working towards transformative solutions and exhibiting the ability to design and execute strategies to address new and old problems.

Christopher Hendryx (’96 BA Economics) was recently promoted to the Director of Oracle Business Process Improvement at Sherwin Williams. In this role, Chris will lead the cross-functional team working to strengthen their world-wide supply chain by defining and implementing systems, tools, and processes throughout their operations. Chris is also a member of the CLASS Visiting Committee and is part of a task force formed by Dean Sadlek to expand internship opportunities for liberal arts majors by working with local partners to match students with applicable work experiences.

Seyed “Sean” Tavakoli (’06 BA Political Science) was recently named to the “President’s Club” for Rentokil North America as one of their top performing Commercial Sales Representatives. Sean resides in San Jose, California.

Joseph A. Salem Jr. (’98 BA English) was appointed to Associate Dean for Learning, Undergraduate Services and Commonwealth Campus Libraries for the University Libraries at Penn State, beginning March 1. He recently defended his dissertation, “The Development and Validation of All Four TRAILS (Tools for Real-Time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) Tests for K-12 Students,” and was awarded a doctorate in evaluation and measurement this past December from Kent State University.

Victor Leandry (’99 MSW Social Work) is the Executive Director of El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Inc. in Lorain, Ohio.

Kevin Keating (’00 MA English) was named by Cleveland Magazine as one of the Most Interesting People of 2015. He received a 2014 Creative Workforce Fellowship in literature from the Community Partnership for Arts & Culture for his novel The Natural Order of Things. Kevin is also a lecturer of fiction in CSU’s English Department. His novel was a finalist for the

2013 L.A. Times Book Prize, the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. His second novel, The Captive Condition, will be released by Random House in July.

Andratesha M. Fritzgerald (’01 BA English, ’02 MA Education) is Director of Federal Programs—East Cleveland City Schools.

Sheila Wright (’02 BA History and ’08 JD Law) is the Director of Community Affairs for The Good Community Foundation, which was established by Albert and Audrey Ratner. For two years, Sheila has served as the executive director of the NAACP’s Cleveland branch.

Ann Marie Gynn (’03 MA Communication) was named the International Association of Business Communicators—Cleveland 2014 Communicator of the Year—for her efforts as the Director of Marketing and Communication for the 2014 Gay Games event held this summer in the Cleveland/Akron area. Ann is also on the CSU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Kathleen Kulik (’06 BA Communication) was recently promoted to Manager, Alumni Affairs, Cleveland State University. In addition to her work with the Student Alumni Association and the Presidential Student Ambassadors, Kathleen will lead efforts for the new Viking Travel program to enhance association membership and lead various alumni and student mentor programs.

A big Viking welcome to Jay P. Gardner (’07 MA Communication) as a new Development Manager at Cleveland State University focusing on fund-raising for three colleges—Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Urban Affairs, and Education and Human Services.

Brandon Simmons (’11 BA Film and Digital Media) is a multimedia journalist for WKYC-TV. Adriana Cuevas (’12 BA Journalism & Promotional Communication) is the courts and county reporter, Lorain County, for The Morning Journal.

Applause for CSU Theatre Program CSU Alumnus George J. Lazar (’83 BS Chemistry) attended a CSU Theatre performance in November and sent the Department of Theatre and Dance the following accolade: “...we would like to express our absolute enjoyment of last night’s opening of The Dybbuk! What a flawless performance by an unbelievably talented group of individuals! From the director, the cast, to the stage crew, this was ONE OF THE MOST PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES WE HAVE EVER SEEN!... As a CSU graduate and alumnus, I am proud to see how the theater arts program has progressed over the years into such a fine organization and that it has truly put Cleveland on the map for the performing arts!”

Taking Stock...

Giving Shares Can Share the Wealth College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) supporters give back to CSU and the College in many ways, including with direct charitable giving. One philanthropic method that is proving to be more popular in recent years is donating gifts of appreciated securities/stocks that have been held for more than one year and that have realized a gain.

A recent CBSNews Moneywatch article shared the following: “The tax benefits—which include deducting the amount of the charitable donation AND escaping the unrealized gains on the donated stock—come from the fact that the deduction for a donation of property to charity is equal to the property’s current fair market value.” The report further stated: “When the donated property is an investment, the donor does not have to recognize the capital gain. These rules create a ‘double play’ of tax benefits: a charitable deduction AND avoiding tax on the unrealized capital gains of the donated property.”

Paul Wolansky, Senior Director, University Advancement, commented: “Donors who use this method of charitable giving like it a lot. They find that CSU’s process for transferring appreciated securities is fairly simple and straightforward.”

Wolansky noted: “Donors have commented to me that with the stock market selling near its all-time high and no minimum amount of shares required to donate, this has made sense for their particular situation. While giving a gift of appreciated securities/stocks is useful for many individuals, it’s always best to consult your own personal advisors on all legal, tax, or financial issues related to your charitable giving to see what fits best in your situation.”

Michael Edward Warnick (BMusic and MMusic) is a member of the Trumpet/Cornet section for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. While at CSU, Michael was a member of the CSU Pep Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Orchestra. He commented about his CSU experience, “It’s a great school. Many of the finest musicians I know are part of the faculty or were students there.”

Dr. Joseph “Joe” Garry

Dr. Gregory Sadlek, Dean of CLASS, hosted a private luncheon with Professor Emeritus Joseph “Joe” Garry to celebrate Dr. Garry’s recent induction into the Cleveland Play House’s Hall of Fame in November 2014. “Dr. Garry is an important part of Cleveland State, Playhouse Square and the city’s history,” Dr. Sadlek noted. “His work to establish the theatre program in the mid-60’s brought our students an unprecedented number of opportunities to explore their craft, including meeting many major stars of the stage and screen. Under Dr. Garry’s leadership, Cleveland State earned, over many other nationally ranked drama programs including Yale, a Kennedy Center honor in 1970.”
