MS in Chemical Engineering The master’s in chemical engineering is a 30-credit hour program, at the end of which you will be prepared to enter into a career in industry or to continue your research and education. The program lasts 24 months and encompasses your 30 credit hours of work.

PhD Degree Program Requirements Housed in Clarkson’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing, the PhD in chemical engineering serves those interested in an academic or industrial research career and offers excellent facilities for leading-edge research. Doctoral students will complete 90 credits beyond the bachelor’s, including coursework and a dissertation.

larkson’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is ranked among the top in the nation at the graduate level by U.S. News & World Report. Graduate courses and research can lead to master of science or doctor of philosophy degrees.

MS in Civil & Environmental Engineering The MS program typically takes 18 to 24 months to complete and requires students to write and defend a thesis on their independent research or complete

a professionally-oriented special project with additional coursework. All students must pass a group of core courses in one of the following specialty areas: environmental, geotechnical, structural or water-resources engineering. Exceptional students may be invited to proceed directly to the PhD; such students will be awarded the MS concurrently with the PhD.

PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering The PhD program is 90 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. Thirty-nine credit hours are spent doing coursework, while six credit hours are spent in seminar. The rest is spent on a combination of a thesis and other doctoral work.

The Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) with a concentration in construction engineering management (CEM) is available for students who have a BS in civil engineering or another engineering discipline. The CEM track is designed for flexibility, giving you the opportunity to choose courses that meet your needs and schedule. Your project advisor is selected through mutual agreement of the CEM program director, your potential project advisor and yourself.

The CEM track within the civil engineering program consists of 30 total graduate credits, concentrated in three core CEM courses (nine credits), three civil and environmental engineering electives (nine credits), three business management courses (nine credits) and a project (three credits). Students usually complete this program in one to two years.

he Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers programs of study leading to a PhD in electrical and computer engineering. To qualify for the PhD program, you must have an MS or ME degree from a program in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline.

Applicants with degrees in disciplines other than engineering may be required to demonstrate proficiency through additional undergraduate coursework, as determined by the departmental graduate committee. This may require an additional semester of study for which graduate credit cannot be granted.

Clarkson also offers an off-campus PhD option designed to assist qualified non-resident candidates to matriculate at Clarkson as doctoral degree candidates.

Degree Requirements The PhD program consists of 90 credit hours. Students spend a minimum of three years working on the degree and must have completed the requirements within five years.

The programs span natural science and engineering fields while giving you opportunities to engage with the social sciences and policymaking. You will investigate interrelationships between the natural and human systems that affect environmental outcomes on a local and global scale. We create leaders who apply engineering and science with an interdisciplinary perspective and understand policies necessary to solve complex environmental problems.

The MS degree in ESE consists of 30 credit hours, including a research thesis or project.

This degree can usually be completed in 18 to 24 months. The PhD in ESE consists of 90 credit hours, including a minimum of 24 in coursework and six in seminar.

Offered in both the School of Arts & Sciences and the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering, the MS&E PhD program requires 90 credit hours for successful completion. These credits are taken in coursework, seminars and project work.

ur PhD program in materials science and engineering (MS&E) focuses on advanced materials and their application across the full spectrum of technical challenges worldwide. The objective of this program is to offer students from diverse science and engineering backgrounds the opportunity to develop specialized competence in one or more of the MS&E fields and to demonstrate their ability to conduct research and add to the body of knowledge in materials science or materials engineering.

You can tailor your coursework to gain the knowledge and skills that interest you. In addition, you will take a set of required MS&E core courses that give you a basic foundation and showcase the breadth of the MS&E discipline. You must have a dissertation project that is overseen by a Clarkson faculty advisor, who may be affiliated with any of the departments in either the School of Arts & Sciences or the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering. Typically, faculty advisors are members of the mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry or physics departments.

Our MS and PhD programs enable students to become independent thinkers and efficient selfdirected professionals. They are designed to help you expand your understanding of central concepts within a wide variety of mechanical engineering disciplines. You will learn about cutting-edge knowledge and techniques in disciplines such as solid mechanics, thermal fluid systems, novel materials and structures, bioengineering and prosthetics, and energy systems. Backed by faculty who conduct research in a variety of areas, the programs are supported by sources including, local, national and international agencies, industry and public and private foundations. You can also consider MBA electives and non-technical courses to integrate business skills that complement your technical expertise.

Degree Requirements The MS in mechanical engineering program at the Potsdam campus consists of 30 credit hours minimum. Students complete the program in one to five years. The PhD program in mechanical engineering, also offered at the Potsdam campus, is designed for those who wish to further their education in a specific discipline. Both the MS and PhD programs are overseen by a mechanical engineering department faculty member who guides and assists students in gaining knowledge, experience and ability.

Electrical Engineering, MS-EE, With Concentration in Power Engineering

Advanced Certificate in Power Systems Engineering LOCATION:

larkson offers an MS-EE degree with a power engineering concentration and an online Advanced Certificate in Power Systems Engineering. Both programs are designed for working engineers who have an interest in developing advanced technical knowledge in electric power systems and equipment. Graduates of these programs typically continue on to careers as technical experts in their selected area of electric power engineering, such as transformers, design of substations, transmission systems, distribution systems, rotating machines,

power generation, renewable energy and energy storage systems, renewable resource integration, system planning and reliability, operations, and protection and control.

Degree Requirements The MS-EE degree with a power engineering concentration requires 30 credit hours total.

Students may take seven to nine courses, including at least four power engineering courses and two more from any area of electrical and computer engineering. Two seminar credits are required, and students must complete a project. The project can be anywhere from one to seven credits, depending on the number of courses students take. It typically takes two and a half to four years to complete this program.

The Advanced Certificate in Power Systems Engineering requires the successful completion of four graduate-level engineering courses, with at least three of these being in the electric power area.

Students select from a range of courses in both power systems and power equipment.

Courses taken for the advanced certificate can be applied toward a master’s degree if the student decides to continue their studies.

A knowledgeable workforce is key to meeting these challenges. This degree (or advanced certificate) will combine strategic principles used in the energy industry with focused business disciplines to equip you with

the industry knowledge and business skills needed to become a leader in this rapidly changing and critical industry.

Degree Requirements This degree requires 10 courses and the course BOE616 MS Graduate Project in the Business of Energy to graduate. One course must be BOE610, plus four or five courses from the remaining Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering business of energy program courses. The remaining five courses are electives from the David D. Reh School of Business MBA program.

The advanced certificate requires the completion of four courses. One course must be BOE610, plus three courses from the remaining business of energy program courses. Students are encouraged to take all six courses from the business of energy program.

Seven of the 10 must be technical courses from the electrical engineering curriculum; the other three courses are electives. The electives include other electrical or mechanical courses, computer science (or information technology) courses, David D. Reh School of Business MBA program courses or Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering business of energy program courses.

Degree Requirements The MSEM degree consists of 30 credit hours total, nine of which are elective credits that can be combined for individualized concentrations. Students can expect to complete the program within 24 months.

Learning Experience

the technical environment, the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) program emphasizes a curriculum focused on providing you with the unique skill set needed to lead in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The program utilizes a blended learning, cohort-based model to immerse you in a true learning community. This model leverages the combined experience of the group, creating an environment in which you learn through collaboration and sustained discourse and allowing you to apply what you have learned in real time.

Clarkson’s hybrid MSEM program blends in-person and online classroom learning for a worker-friendly and extraordinarily flexible experience. During the two-year program, students attend five residence weekends in state-of-the-art facilities in Beacon or New York City (made possible through our partnership with the American Management Association). The program starts every September and January at both locations.

These face-to-face interactions build the foundation for vibrant online discussions and courses while providing the flexibility working professionals need through synchronous and asynchronous learning.
