RATING THE HERE NG WINNING THE ESG AWARD

T

he Here Building is a refurbishment project to transform an existing office building originally constructed in the early 2000s.

The HERE building forms part of a highly sustainable campus focused entirely on Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) and wellness.

The building is net zero carbon, BREEAM Outstanding, Fitwel 3*, Five at Heart accredited, Wiredscore Platinum and RESET accredited. All electricity comes from renewable sources.

The building offers a wide selection of amenities including a cafe, a large indoor and outdoor gym, secure cycle storage and an outdoor working area.

As part of the Thames Valley Business Park the campus is situated within an 80 acre nature reserve. There are excellent transport links with Reading train station nearby and easy access to the M4.

It has been designed to provide a new class of workplace where the office environment is complimented by a sociable community with exercise and relaxation amenities.

Our Role Clarkebond were engaged from RIBA stage 4 onwards to carry the project forward to completion. This involved: • Structural design of steel beams • Performance specification for a feature staircase • Design of new timber glulam beams • Finite element analysis of existing floor slabs • Design of retaining walls • Design of steel bracketry • Alterations to below ground building drainage and external drainage Added Value Clarkebond carried out further investigations into the structure and reinforcement to allow savings to be made compared to the concept designs.

We reduced the overall weight of steel by half compared to RIBA stage 3, though finite element analysis of the slab and rationalisation of the structure.

We also provided guidance beyond our scope to provide the client with a better-quality product.

For example we recommended undertaking a survey of entire drainage system to make sure any issues are identified and corrected during while the works are ongoing.

This will save any further disruption from repairs and alteration that would be required in the future.

I

n December 2021 the first 12 beneficiaries of the Dominica’s Housing Recovery Project (HRP) received the keys to their new homes.

HRP is an island wide project designed to replace destroyed houses while building resilience in the housing sector in Dominica.

Successful applicants are being provided with financial, technical and administrative assistance through the HRP to drive their individual, owner-driven reconstruction process.

Financial support is provided in the form of a grant, to the homeowner, with payment releases at key construction stages far a safe, resilient new homes.

Clarkebond is the contractor for the Design and Construction supervision of the 450 units of resilient housing for vulnerable people.

We are providing lead consultant, project management, structural and civil engineering design with architecture (sub-contracted to Article 25), cost management (sub-contracted to RLB St Lucia) and local input (sub-contracted to Edgehill Fortune Dominica).

We work with local contractors who utilize local materials, sourcing blocks manufactured on island, with locally won aggregates and use products available from local suppliers.

This offers benefits to the sustainability of the environment and economy of Dominica.

Resilience is achieved through structural design and architectural features that ensure flexibility in case of earthquakes, pressure equalization and glass protection in hurricanes, natural ventilation, flood protection, and rainwater harvesting.

This means that the units are capable of resisting Category 5 hurricanes and local seismic design forces.

Our involvement with the HRP has been a very positive relationship - one that is improving the lives of people who are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

This project also demonstrates our core values and our strong commitment and drive toward regeneration; sustainability and engineering excellence, while working with clients and partners to safeguard lives and the environment.

FLOWERDO WEST

OWN RETAIL PARK, TON-SUPER-MARE

The objective was to improve the functionality and accessibility of the car park while implementing sustainable features.

Our Involvement: Our involvement in this project encompassed the initial investigation work, optioneering, and the remediation process for a failing car park situated in an out-of-town retail park in Weston-Super-Mare.

Additionally, our team was responsible for creating additional drive lanes to facilitate the opening of a Burger King restaurant within one of the previously vacant units within the car park.

Sustainability: A key aspect of this project was the implementation of a SuDS car park, which aimed to enhance water quality runoff before it entered the sewer system.

Relationship with the Team and Client: Our collaboration with the rest of the team was characterised by excellence and a cohesive working environment.

We maintained effective communication and coordination with all stakeholders involved in the project.

While we did not have prior experience working with the end client, we established a good working relationship with the project manager.

Our effective collaboration with the project manager contributed to the smooth execution of the project.

Innovation: Although this project did not introduce revolutionary innovations, the enhancements made to the existing SuDS car park system are seen as a commendable stride forward.

By incorporating sustainable drainage practices, the project contributed to the overall improvement of environmental sustainability in the area.

Particularly noteworthy is the project’s response to the growing prevalence of remediating historical SuDS features. By setting a positive example, this endeavour paves the way for future sustainable developments.

Our Drive

Throughout the project, we delivered added value by carefully planning and implementing construction phasing that best suited the needs of the business in the retail park.

Appointment Process: Our involvement in this project was through a direct award by the project manager, based on our expertise and experience in similar undertakings.

Challenges and Resolutions: One of the main challenges encountered during the project was coordinating the construction phases to minimise disruption to the businesses operating within the retail park. To address this, carefully phasing plans were developed, ensuring that all business could remain operational throughout the project.

Additionally, there were delays caused by the availability of Western Power Distribution (WPD), which necessitated quick adjustments to the phasing plans.

Their adjustments were necessary to ensure that the work was completed before the busy Christmas shopping period. Furthermore, planning delays arose due to changes required for the entrance to address local concerns.

These changes impacted the project’s phasing but were successfully managed to ensure the Burger King unit opened on time.

By optimising the workflow of the contractors, we ensured minimal disruption to the ongoing operations of the business.

Our proactive involvement and hands-on approach played pivotal roles in driving the successful completion of the project, making a significant contribution despite the absence of explicit mention of social value.

Potential for Future Work: Our positive working relationship with both the project manager and the contractor positions us well for potential future collaborations.

We have received inquires from the project manager and contractor, indicating a likelihood of additional work opportunities.

larkebond had the privilege of participating in the West Exe School Careers day. A huge thank you to Gemma and Gintare for their outstanding contributions and genuine enthusiasm.

It was truly remarkable to witness the students actively engaging with them, eagerly seeking knowledge, and engaging in meaningful conversations.

The event placed a strong emphasis on STEM careers, aiming to inspire students to explore the vast array of opportunities that lie ahead.

At Clarkebond, we had the opportunity to connect with numerous students, sharing our expertise in engineering and shedding light on the work we do.

Our interactions with the students left us inspired and hopeful for the bright futures that lie ahead for these young, talented individuals.

THE PUPPET PLACE, BRISTOL P

uppet Place is a vibrant and dynamic hub for all things puppetry, fostering a deep appreciation and celebration of this unique art form.

Located at its charming home in the heart of the city, Puppet Place serves as a creative haven for puppeteers, puppet makers, and puppet enthusiasts alike.

One of our structural engineers, Vicky Karavatsi, had the incredible opportunity to perform a structural inspection on this captivating/neighbouring 1800s building - a historic dock warehouse with a rich architectural heritage.

It was very interesting to discover this hidden gem while assessing the condition of its timber trusses.

The main objective of the inspection was to evaluate the current state of the building, with a particular focus on the condition of its historic timber trusses.

Our findings unveiled intriguing insights into the buildings history. We identified areas where minor repairs or preservation efforts would be essential to ensure the continued stability and longevity of this historic building.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this project and look forward to continuing our work in the field of structural inspections, playing a role in the conservation of our architectural heritage.

IAN COLEY SHOOT CHELTENHAM

he Ian Coley Shooting School is a shooting range and store located in the Gloucester countryside near Cheltenham. The project aimed to expand the existing building, which previously only consisted or retail space and back-of-house facilities, to create a venue of housing events.

The scope of the project included constructing a new entrance, reception area, and hosting space.

Clarkebond was appointed as the Civil and Structural engineers and Geotechnical services provider for this project.

Our Involvement:

Challenges and Resolutions: • Working to a tight design programme to deliver to site, Clarkebond responded swiftly to the modular framing design, providing a complete preliminary foundation design package within a two-day turnaround.

• The design for the support steelwork needed to allow the retail space to remain open throughout the design process. Clarkebond worked with the design team to implement a system that could be installed with the site security intact, and without closing the shop, much to the client's satisfaction.

Clarkebond played a crucial role in providing structural and civil engineering services for the project. We worked as structural engineers for the substructure, focusing on the ground floor down to the foundations.

• Delays within the design and construction programme were effectively managed by Clarkebond, minimising project delays. Despite tight procurement time scales and an accelerated programme, Clarkebond maintained fast turnaround times throughout the project.

Additionally, we were responsible for alterations to the existing foul and surface drainage systems and integrating the new extension with the existing loadbearing masonry frame. CB Ground Engineering conducted site investigations to inform the design process of CB structures.

• Working with an unusual, non-compliant existing drainage network on-site, Clarkebond revised the drainage design to meet requirements, implementing a shallower system. A late-stage change included the introduction of a new soakaway to supplement the existing system, which was initially assumed to be functional but later found to be defective.

Sustainability and Appointment: To promote sustainability, the above-ground construction utilised a timber-frame system, and the building featured primarily timber cladding.

Furthermore, the project incorporated the reuse and expansion of the existing soakaway to enhance surface water drainage.

Clarkebond was directly awarded the project by EG Carter, the contractor, under a Design and Build Contract.

Relationship with the Team and Client: Our relationship with the architect and quantity surveyor/project manager was generally good.

We worked together to resolve issues related to levels and sure smooth progress. Although there were strains at points due to time pressures, we maintained clear communication and prioritised the information required, ultimately resolving any challenges.

We enjoyed a positive relationship with Ian Coley Sporting Goods. The client appreciated Clarkebond's fast responses and willingness to accommodate requests from other disciplines. Our steelwork solution was particularly valued as it allowed the retail space to remain operational during installation.

Client Satisfaction: Ian Coley Shooting School expressed overall satisfaction with the project outcome. The client provided positive feedback, particularly praising Clarkebond’s steelwork solution and the timesaving benefits derived from our fast responses and adaptability.

Future Work: Although no awards or client testimonials were obtained at the time, Clarkebond is actively engaged with EG Carter on future retail projects, indicating a positive outlook for continued collaboration.

Overall, the Ian Coley Shooting School project showcased Clarkebond's expertise in structural and civil engineering, problem-solving abilities, and efficient project management.

Our contributions resulted in a successful expansion of the shooting school, meeting the client's requirements and expectations.

he project involved building eight ultrarapid electric vehicle (EV) charging points and setting up all the needed electrical equipment.

Additionally, the site faces a residual risk of coastal floodi which posed a potential threat to the functioning and safety of the electric vehicle charging points and associate infrastructure.

The main was to create a reliable and fast charging network for EVs, making it easier for people to charge their vehicles quickly and promoting more environmentally friendly transportation options.

Our Involvement: Clarkebond's involvement was for the production of a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) to support a planning application. This involved assessing all forms of flood risk at the site and then providing mitigation that can reduce the impacts of flooding at the site as well as making the proposed development more sustainable and resilient.

Clarkebond assessed the existing risks and constraints, particularly those related to flood risk and drainage using site specific data as will as publicly available information. This influenced the final scheme design produced.

• Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) - Clarkebond conducted a detailed FRA to analyse the potential flood risks from sources, including coastal flooding.

In 2019, the North East Lincolnshire (NEL) declared a climate emergency and as such supports developments such as this to promote sustainable travel.

A FEW PROJECT BARNSTAPLE

icky Karavatsi, our structural engineer, has been working on various listed buildings in Barnstaple, North Devon.

She also brought along out summer placement student Chloe, to inspect 36-37 Boutport Street and visit the Pannier Market, which is currently undergoing renovation.

The first phase of the Pannier Market renovation was recently completed and reopened to the public on August 1st.

Pannier Market: Since the Saxon era, Barnstaple has operated as a market town. The current market hall, which was first used in 1855, has now largely reopened thanks to renovations of the restrooms, the conversion of the corn store into an insulated / self-contained space, roof repairs, and major interior and exterior redecoration and repairs.

The rehabilitation of the Grade II listed building has been challenging because of the building's intricate structures, historic fabric and the degraded condition of some of the timbers.

36, 37 Boutport Street: The Grade II listed building, which has a rich architectural history dating to 1905 and its entablatures with stone architraves ad cornice at each storey, makes it distinctive. During the past month, the building's neighbouring façade has been meticulously demolished; the majority of the material with architectural elements, however, was salvaged and will be reused in the new development.

The existing Grade II listed building will be renovated and the now empty 37 plots will be transformed into a new building with the intention of establishing a crucial new pedestrian path as well as premium residences and office space for coworking, nearby enterprises, and remote workers.

Following the demolition of the façades, Vicky and Chloe conducted a thorough site inspection, paying particular attention to the uncovered hidden basement that may have been from the Victorian era and also the existing building's exterior cream coloured Marland stone walls, typical building material of the era.

Our research revealed fascinating historical information about the structure. We located areas that would require repairs, designs or preservation work in order to maintain the stability and longevity of this historic structure.

GE - DIGITAL AND DATA CENTRE

T

he new Digital and Data Centre forms part of the wider South West Institute of Technology (SWIOT) plans to revolutionise digital, engineering and manufacturing technology.

The new building provides education opportunities in the digital sector, including courses around data analytics, cyber security and software development.

This nationally significant and prestigious digital learning centre is located on the college's Hele Road Campus in the heart of the city.

It interfaces seamlessly with the existing 'Hele Building' which is situated within a conservation area, near an ancient monument and listed buildings.

The Centre houses digital learning laboratories, state-of-the-art IT suites and interactive seminar spaces, providing learners with access to cutting edge technology which will prepare them for moving directly into industry, or further study.

Our Role: Clarkebond were engaged from the project outset to completion and handover. We provided transport planning, geotechnical and flood risk services to support the planning application.

We also provided civil and structural services, collaborating closely with the entire design team on coordinated BIM models to accurately detail the building's complicated geometry.

Peninsula Projects appointed us directly, after having previously worked for them on other successful projects. The appointment was arranged through the SBS Framework and we were subsequently novated to the contractor.

Challenges and Solutions: The project targeted and achieved an Excellent BREEAM rating. Our designs focussed on minimising the material use, steel weight and concrete volumes required.

ott Dixon Innovations: The new centre required careful co-ordination and complex interfaces between the existing and new building. We detailed complicated new foundations that were constructed in and around the existing with varying concrete levels and coordinated with below ground services and drainage.

We detailed complicated and intricate steel connections back to the existing building. These were detailed in a way that allowed the small and manageable stubs to be fixed to the existing frame before the new much longer members were then installed with the main new frame.

Added Value: Our team were consistent throughout the entirety of the project, this meant we were able to build and develop excellent relationships with the client, team and contractor which has directly led to further work on smaller projects for the college.

Our constant involvement provided benefits to the project.

Having been part of the entire process and understanding how the development evolved, we were able to provide rapid solutions to any issues that arose.

OWLS HATCH HERNE BAY Flood risk investigation & planning support for some of Brtiain's laregst solar schemes

he solar industry has seen massive growth over the past few years, largely due to an increase in solar farms that have the capacity to supply large quantities of clean renewable

With the Government plans to phase out coal fire power stations by 2050, and net zero" greenhouse gases targets by 2050, that trend looks set to continue.

Clarkebond has played a key role in helping British Solar Renewables UK to successfully develop a number of solar schemes, including one of the largest in the country, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way - particularly with regards to flood risk, pollution control and the approach to site drainage and the management of surface runoff.

Clarkebond and British Solar Renewables UK (BSR) have consulted widely with the Environment Agency on solar panel schemes and as a result of discussions particularly with Environment Agency (SW office), developed a procedure to assess a site to identify potential risks factors which could contribute to surface runoff; the procedure involves a high level

decision matrix to determine whether mitigation is required and the scope and scale of mitigation is required.

One such scheme, subsequently bought from BSR by Cubico Sustainable Investments, a global leader in renewable energy and water investment, was one of Britain’s biggest solar farms, located just off Owl's Hatch Road near Herne, Kent, the farm has the capability of powering the whole of Herne Bay and generating enough electricity to supply 14,000 homes.

The scheme comprised a complex of photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 51.9MW (connection voltage of UKPN 132KV) and covers 196.88 acres (79.67ha) - an area the equivalent of almost 150 football pitches.

Clarkebond was instrumental in investigating the flood risk posed to the scheme from critical hydraulic structures linked to Plenty Brook, other local drains, ditches, and culverts.

Clarkebond also developed and implemented effective and sustainable flood mitigation and management measures to allow planning permission to be granted.

Another development of approximately 26.6 ha on a farm, in Tudeley Kent, includes over 40,000 panels which will generate enough energy to power over 4,000 homes in the surrounding areas.

In this case, Clarkebond was commissioned to provide a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) to support the planning application and advised on how best to achieve sustainably objectives through the development layout.

Particular attention was paid to using existing natural topographic features to manage surface water run-off and to leaving undisturbed all existing hedgerows, ponds, trees, ditches, and wildfire.

Existing tracks were used to facilitate maintenance of the solar panels and a SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) was incorporated to minimise surface water run-off.

An innovative design of solar panels was recommended which comprised horizontal sots across the surface area of each panel to allow intercepted rainfall to drip through to the ground at regular intervals in contrasts to conventional designs which normally intercept the rainfall and discharge as a concentrated flow at one end.

Clarkebond also had input into the layout of the panels including specifying the setback distances from watercourses and other hydrological features and easement from sewers.

Clarkebond's flood risk assessment demonstrated that the development compiled with the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPFF).

This, along with Clarkebond's advice on the development layout, innovation in solar panel design and use of appropriate Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) features to manage surface runoff, was a significant factor in the success of the planning application for the development of this solar park.

e are pleased to announce the winners of our inaugural Spotlight Awards. The awards are made in recognition by the senior management team to people who have exceeded expectations within their work and contributed actively to improving the Clarkebond experience.

Colleagues were requested to provide nominations with a short paragraph of why they believe the nominee should receive a Spotlight Award.

Awards will be made on a quarterly basis. We were pleased to say that we received 10 nominations with one person being nominated twice.

After consideration of the nominations at the quarterly board meeting it was agreed to make 2 awards for this quarter. We are thus pleased to announce that the equal first spotlight award goes to Jamie Penney.

amie has gone beyond expectation to assist the Bristol Civil Engineering team through a testing period.

With his line manger off sick and the team leader serving out their notice, Jamie really stood up and took the lead in making sure that the team was managed, organised and that everyone was kept busy and that project deadlines were achieved for our clients.

He was instrumental in making sure that the forward momentum of the team was maintained and took on a lot of the responsibilities that normally fall to his line managers.

Without his input and contribution, the team may have floundered and the quality of the work produced would certainly not have been maintained at the high level we expect.

Jamie has shown initiative, willingness to take on heavier burdens and continues to be a vital member of the team. This bodes well for the future.

Well done Jamie.

The other equal first Spotlight Award goes to the person who was nominated twice. We are pleased to announce that award goes to Zivile Dailidonyte.

ivile's work within the Exeter Structures team has been exceptional over the last six months, working often single handed on projects to deliver both the technical design and all drawn information and RC details.

The design for the building is very challenging, it not only being a hospital but a very remote one on an island that is essentially just a big volcano subjected to hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Her recent work on the Suez recycling and waste transfer station projects and more recently on the Montserrat Hospital project has been completed to a consistently high standard, meeting all deadlines and keeping her projects on track regardless of the often quite demanding client and contractor requests.

She has worked tirelessly over the recent months against many significant hurdles that often resulted in the designs failing. Zivile remained positive throughout and keen to search out and analyse new proposed solutions.

Zivile has been working incredibly hard with limited success, until recently, on the design of the structural frame for the new hospital in Montserrat.

She has spent significant time researching and understanding the American and the local Caribbean design codes to understand the design requirements and the significant differences between these and our Eurocodes.

Her many hours finally come to fruition with a building frame that we are all now comfortable works despite the incredibly challenging structural requirements.

The accompanying nominations stated, “We could not have done this without her”. I might also add that Zivile has also contributed greatly to our research and development credits.

Both Rhea and Arash had the pleasure of meeting a diverse group of students eager to begin their academic and professional journeys.

The fair attracted undergraduates, postgraduates, and even some PhD candidates, all enthusiastic about their future.

One particularly valuable moment was when students had the chance to interact with one of our current placement students.

This allowed them to gain insight into how placements can enhance learning and future career prospects.

We're grateful for the warm welcome and support from the university staff, who work diligently to guide and nurture these bright minds.
