Stable Court - Parent Info Guide 2025

Page 1

INTRODUCTION

This booklet is designed to bring together helpful information which, in our experience, parents have most needed to know. The formal provision we offer is set out in the terms and conditions and our various school policies which can be found on the website.

If you need further information or have any concerns whatsoever, do not hesitate to contact us using our general email address stablecourt@claremont.surrey.sch.uk or the main telephone number 01372 465 380.

Our website is www.claremont.net

We hope this guide is helpful, and we’ll keep you updated throughout the year about any policy or procedural changes via our weekly communications and the parent portal.

PhilosoPhy

COMMUNICATION

We wish to adopt a harmonious and respectful relationship with all Claremont families as we strongly believe this is in the best interests of our pupils.

sources of information

The school’s website is a useful source of information, including key policies and procedures. We have introduced a password protected parent portal which allows parents to access general information such as the school calendar and specific information related to pupils. There is a useful feature which allows you to integrate the school calendar with your own online calendar. During term time, the SchoolPost system sends out relevant information to parents and highlights forthcoming events via email, typically on Tuesdays and Fridays. Information about sporting fixtures is found on the SOCS platform via the parent portal. The school office is staffed between 8.00am-4.30pm term time. For matters requiring immediate attention please call 01372 465 380.

staff contacting Parents

We use the contact details provided to us when a child joins the school to send information and in case of emergencies. We ask that all families keep contact information completely up to date either via the school office or by submitting updates using the parent portal. It is a legal requirement for us to hold contact details for two trusted adults (usually parents) per pupil.

Parents contacting staff

For a specific matter or concern, we always encourage parents to contact the school office directly and without hesitation. Please allow up to 24 hours for a response regarding general matters (as you would expect, teaching and learning together with pupils’ welfare are always our top priorities). Communication must always be conducted with courtesy and consideration. If you do not feel satisfied with a particular response, you are always welcome to seek further clarification with senior staff. To ensure that the teacher/parent relationship is based on trust, email conversations must not be shared with other parties or on social media platforms. Email for teachers and coaches who are not Claremont members of staff (e.g. visiting music teachers and sports coaches) must be directed to the head of the relevant department. Non-confidential, general quick questions are fine at the end of the day when the children are dismissed, but anything of a confidential

nature should be dealt with in a booked appointment. Senior staff and the head of the junior school are also available for meetings as the need arises. Clarification of fee accounts and similar queries can be made through the bursary.

Changes to pick up arrangements should be sent to the school office at stablecourt@claremont.surrey.sch.uk in the first instance.

staff email addresses

In most cases staff email addresses are constructed using the following format: Initial, followed by surname@claremont.surrey.sch.uk.

*Example:MrJBloggswillhavetheaddress:jbloggs@claremont.surrey.sch.uk

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones are not allowed to be brought into school by junior school children. Home contact by pupils during the day is always through a member of staff and usually via the school office. The only exception to this rule is in the case where pupils use the school bus service however permission must be sought in writing from the head of the junior school. Where permission has been granted, mobile phones (which we strongly recommend are not valuable ‘smart phone’ devices) must be handed into the Stable Court office or the child’s form tutor at the start of the day and collected at the end of the day. The device may only be used to call parents / carers with staff permission after the school day or at the conclusion of a trip/activity. No unauthorised calls are to be made by pupils at any time while involved in school activities. Please note, mobile phones are not to be used by pupils during excursions or residential trips.

SOCIAL MEDIA GROUP CHATS - NEW POLICY

Following consultation with parents, we will be implementing a new policy in September 2025 for pupils up to and including Year 7. Pupils up to and including Year 7 are not permitted to use social media platforms for ‘group chats’ involving other Claremont pupils. This decision reflects strong parental support and our concern that group messaging among children under 13 may lead to unnecessary social stress and the potential for misunderstandings. To clarify, we are not seeking to prohibit family group chats or straightforward 1:1 message exchanges, nor do we seek to be prescriptive regarding individual parenting approaches, however, we ask for support in ensuring that ‘group chats’ involving three or more pupils are avoided.

term dates

Term dates are published on our website and the parent portal, and show the current and the following academic year.

assemblies

Assemblies for Stable Court are held in the mornings. Regular house and year group assemblies also take place frequently which feature awards and special acknowledgements for pupils. Each half term the junior school meets for a whole school assembly (Reception to Year 6).

aPPointments and leave during the school day/term time

The school’s policy requires families to ensure their children’s holiday plans align with Claremont’s term dates, as the school offers generous holiday periods. Permission for absence will only be granted in serious or exceptional circumstances, and requests must be submitted to the head of junior school for consideration. Claremont does not authorise leave during term time for holidays, and homework or classwork will not be provided in such cases. Where possible, routine medical and dental appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours. If an appointment during school time is unavoidable, requests must be submitted in advance via email to fancourt@claremont.surrey.sch.uk.

The school will only authorise absence where appropriate, and pupils must be collected from the school office if leaving during the day.

absence

In cases where a child is unwell, a parent must notify the school office on 01372 465 380 or via the parent portal by 9.30am, and on each subsequent day of absence, explaining the reason for the absence. Please note that, in the case of diarrhoea and vomiting, a child must not return to school for 48 hours in accordance with the Department of Health guidance. If a child is absent from school without notification, we will contact parents/carers to confirm the child’s whereabouts. If the school cannot be reassured of a pupil’s whereabouts, the police will be informed of a missing pupil.

attendance and Punctuality

Pupils are expected to attend school punctually each day between 8.20am and 3.45pm with a minimum attendance record of 95%. Considerable importance is attached to punctuality and registration is a legal requirement. We therefore ask for parents’ support in ensuring their child arrives on time. Pupils must register at the school office in the case of late arrival.

lunch

During the lunch period, our pupils eat a school lunch freshly prepared on site. They may choose from a hot main course, a pasta, jacket potato, or vegetarian option served with fresh vegetables and salads. A pudding is available together with a choice of cold desserts and fruit. Pupils are also offered a selection of filled baguettes, wraps or sandwiches. Sample menus can be viewed on the parent portal. A packed lunch is typically supplied for pupils when they are on a school trip. Special dietary needs can usually be accommodated in liaison with your child’s tutor, school office or the care centre although we do not offer specific kosher or halal meals. We very much value the social aspect of a shared lunch time experience and therefore this is a compulsory element of the day and lunch should only be eaten in the dining halls. Refunds cannot be made if a meal is not taken. Year groups are allocated a rota of lunch sittings.

morning snack

** Claremont is a nut free school **

Children should bring to school a small snack for morning break consisting of healthy food, e.g. fruit, vegetables, one savoury sandwich, or health bar. No sweets or chocolate are permitted at school. Snacks containing nuts are also not permitted.

ACADEMIC

curriculum

We support pupils at Claremont to become lifelong learners who develop a sensitive and assured understanding of themselves, others and the world around them. Our pupils are successful academically but alongside have a growing sense of their own identity and passions, are intellectually curious and are motivated to make a positive contribution to global, professional life and society.

Our curriculum in Years 3-6 is designed to develop ten specific learner attributes:

We believe good communication with parents is vital at all stages to support academic progress. Details of curriculum arrangements for each stage of a child’s school career can be found in the school’s curriculum policy.

curriculum Policy

The key learning areas of our curriculum encompass: English; mathematics; science; computing; French; classics; history, geography and religious studies, music; drama, art and design, physical education and games, PSHEE and digital citizenship. Character education is a golden thread that runs through our curriculum.

Our curriculum is intended to support our pupils’ strength in their understanding: of themselves, others and the world in which we live. It is both vibrant and rigorously aligned with the school mission statement of recognising the limitless potential in each individual.

Each pupil’s individual timetable is made available to them at the start of each academic year, and is available to view on the parent portal.

equiPment

The school supplies paper and exercise books for every class. Textbooks are also issued at no additional cost. Textbooks must be returned promptly when requested in good condition, and a charge is made if textbooks are lost or returned in poor condition.

A pencil case containing the following should be brought into school by pupils and replenished as needed:

HB pencils White board marker Rubber Glue stick Ruler Scissors

Blue handwriting pen Green biro pen

*Pupils in Year 5 and 6 will also require a calculator and geometry set.

Children may be asked to bring in felt tip pens and coloured pencils but notice will be given in advance. A set of watercolours, sketching pencils and oil pastels will be provided by the school for art lessons.

Wireless headphones are required in school at all times, compatible with their laptop.

All school library books must be returned at the end of each term. Should any book be lost, the school will contact the family for a replacement. We do not allow reference books to be removed from the library.

curriculum maPs

There are curriculum maps for each year group available on the parent portal by term. Each curriculum map provides an overview of the subjects offered in that term and details of what is taught in each subject.

academic standards

Expected academic attainment and target grades are relative to the abilities and strengths of the individual learner and all pupils will be encouraged, supported and challenged to achieve their full academic potential. Whilst academic performance will understandably fluctuate from pupil to pupil we do expect that all pupils will engage themselves fully in their learning, both inside the classroom and at home.

disciPline

Pupils are expected to follow our golden rules of respect, responsibility and reliability. Junior school pupils are expected to behave to high standards at all times and to be a force for good in all their school activities. The following is expected from students at all times:

• Quiet and orderly behaviour is expected inside the buildings at all times.

• Chewing gum, sweets and fizzy drinks must not be consumed at school.

• Pupils must not leave litter in the school buildings or grounds.

• School uniform must be worn correctly while travelling to and from school.

• Pupils’ appearance should always conform to the dress codes.

• All written homework must be handed in punctually (unless permission has been given for work to be completed late).

If work regularly falls below the expected standard, form teachers in the first instance, will contact you to offer guidance for improvement.

homework

Prep diaries are issued to all pupils to track homework assignments. For a teacher, homework is primarily a means of reinforcing and assessing the points and concepts covered in the classroom, offering enrichment and extension as well as being good preparation for the next lesson.

Homework may not always involve written tasks; it can also include tasks requiring discussion, games or activities such as collecting and viewing different resources.

Reading time is encouraged every evening, even if not stipulated in the prep diary, and could also take the form of family reading sessions during the weekends and school holidays. Parents should update the reading record part of the planner regularly.

If a prep diary is lost, a replacement must be purchased from the school office (£5.00). It is the pupil’s duty to accurately record prep. If a piece of prep takes too long, a parent should make a note of the time that the pupil finished working on it and should not go much beyond a reasonable amount of time.

Pupils in Year 3 and 4 can expect to spend up to 20 minutes per task, with pupils in Year 5 and 6 expected to spend up to 30 minutes per task.

individual needs

We aim to meet the needs of every pupil by providing appropriate support where necessary or personalising the curriculum. This might involve tailoring a pupil’s timetable or providing expert and specialist teaching for pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities during the school day. The aim of these individual or small group lessons is to support development of core literacy, numeracy and study skills and to provide pupils with a range of strategies that enable them to cope independently in the classroom environment and increase their self-confidence. Every effort is made to accommodate requests bearing in mind the restrictions of the timetable and teacher availability. Support for pupils whose first language is not English is also available. Please note, there may be an additional charge for some of the support offered.

technology use

Well specified and well used technology offers major benefits for pupils at Claremont. We see three different elements of this: the availability to all pupils of a consistent, reliable and high-quality device; the use of the Microsoft Teams environment throughout their academic journey; and the presence of fully interactive screens in all our learning spaces for use by both teachers and pupils.

All Stable Court pupils have their own device purchased or rented by parents through the school scheme.

The safeguarding of our pupils is critically important and under our IT acceptable use policy, we provide filtered and monitored internet access on site and we monitor internet use via school devices at all times. We also insist on providing appropriate anti-virus and anti-malware systems to protect both the pupils and us. As part of the Microsoft Teams environment, all pupils have access to substantial OneDrive cloud storage and should use this to store their work to ensure that it is accessible from anywhere and securely backed up. Further information about the 1:1 device scheme is provided separately. Contact IT support: IThelpdesk@claremont.surrey.sch.uk

rePorts, assessments and monitoring academic Progress

The philosophy of our reporting structure is based on the principles of ensuring pupils have the feedback they need to make improvements and to ensure there is an ongoing dialogue between parents, pupils and teachers.

Reports are provided termly with full explanatory accompanying detail.

The assessment and reporting framework is tailored for each year group and can be found in our curriculum policy. Broadly, the main annual reporting points are:

Autumn 1

Autumn 2

Information evening

Parents’ evening (pastoral Year 3-6) - in person

Parents appointments (academic Year 5-6) - virtual

Autumn, term end Grade card

Spring 2

Parents’ appointments (academic Year 3-4) - virtual

Spring, term end Grade card

Summer, term end Full academic report including grade card

PASTORAL

houses

A vibrant house system lies at the heart of Claremont life. All pupils are allocated to a specific house for the duration of their time in the junior school. The four houses are:

Norwood Radnor Longcross Esher

House competitions run across the year to allow pupils of all ages and interests to play a part in the advancement of their particular house. House allocation is at the discretion of the deputy head (pastoral). Siblings typically join the same house. As the senior school has six houses, it is possible for children to be allocated to a different house in Year 7.

Pastoral

co-ordination

Each child’s teacher is set to deal with most parental enquiries and concerns related to a pupil, at least in the first instance, and we hope that parents quickly come to regard their child’s teacher as someone with whom they and their child can have a trusting and positive relationship.

Personal, social, health and economic education (Pshee)

PSHEE is delivered to all pupils through academic lessons and specific pastoral sessions. This curriculum reflects the school’s mission statement and includes a character education programme based on a two-year cycle of monthly character qualities.

PSHEE includes age-appropriate topics, such as drugs and alcohol education, family relationships, peer pressure, mindfulness, staying safe online and on social media and resilience.

counselling

Qualified and BACP-accredited counsellors provide individual counselling sessions to pupils in Cedar Lodge (our pupil hub) during the school day. A pupil can be referred by a teacher, parent, carer, or request it themselves.

The content of the sessions is confidential. However, if a child is at risk, the school process for safeguarding pupils will be implemented. In line with national guidelines, counsellors do not always require parental consent to work with a young person.

behaviour, rewards and sanctions

Full details about how the school operates its rewards and sanctions can be found in the behaviour, rewards and sanctions policy on the website.

We are always pleased to reward positive contributions to school life –examples of these are house points and certificates. Individuals who merit special mention will be asked to sign the Book of Excellence. Good work is celebrated in assemblies.

Other roles and responsibilities are offered to pupils in order to develop their interpersonal leadership skills. These range from being form monitors responsible for things such as class equipment, to more formal roles such as those of house and sports captains, library monitors, open day guides, charity committee, Stable Court council representatives and school captains. The older pupils are required to apply for the formal positions of responsibility, and all are encouraged to take this step.

We know that our pupils may make mistakes at times, and the premise behind our behaviour management procedures is that we all learn from our mistakes and once sanctions are served, we move forward positively together.

uniform

When wearing smart/formal uniform, blazers should be worn, shirts and blouses must be tucked in, shoes should be polishable black leather. Trainers are not acceptable and shoes should be smart and clean. The navy school weather coat should be in school at all times.

On days when pupils have games or PE, they should wear their games/PE kit to school and bring additional sports specific equipment with them in a small bag. Pupils taking part in sports clubs before school will need to change into school uniform after their session if they don’t have games or PE that day. Pupils taking part in sports clubs after school should change at lunchtime if they do not have games or PE that day.

For pupils wearing skirts or shorts, these should normally be worn with a base layer or tracksuit trousers, unless the summer uniform policy has been enacted.

hair, jewellery and makeuP

Hair should be neat, clean, natural in colour and if it touches the shoulder, must be tied up with plain navy blue or maroon hair accessories. No beading is allowed in the hair.

One small gold or silver stud in each ear for those with pierced ears is allowed. No other jewellery should be worn apart from a watch. Unauthorised jewellery will be confiscated. Earrings must be removed for all games and PE lessons.

Makeup or nail varnish is not permitted.

Exceptions to all these rules for religious or other personal reasons, should be discussed with head of junior school and agreed in advance of any change.

language

All pupils should treat their peers and staff with dignity and respect. This includes always using appropriate and inoffensive language and recognising that words can be harmful to others if used carelessly and without thought. Being reasonable, courteous and polite is a basic but essential expectation and pupils should also expect staff to treat them in the same way.

teen tiPs - wellbeing hub

Claremont subscribes to an online platform which offers useful and relevant ‘hints and tips’, parenting courses, webinars and other content to help you support your child at this stage in their development.

The wellbeing hub can be accessed via the parent portal.

overview

At Claremont, we believe that a well-rounded education goes beyond the classroom. We foster an atmosphere in which pupils can always “have a go” at trying out something new. Our co-curricular timetable is updated on a termly basis. There are approximately 40 co-curricular activities each term, from chess, coding and touch typing, to fencing, music groups and traditional team sports.

Children are encouraged to participate in at least one extra club and must be committed to the activity for a full term at a time.

Details of all clubs and how to book can be found in the club brochure which is shared in advance of each term.

sPort at claremont

Our principal sports are football, rugby, netball, cricket, athletics and indoor gymnastics.

Details of fixtures, venues, maps for away games and results are regularly updated on the sports area of the school’s website (SOCS), also accessed via the parent portal.

Matches are carefully arranged based upon pupil numbers, facilities and staffing. We endeavour to give pupils as much opportunity to represent the school as possible. We do choose what we consider to be our best teams for the first team fixtures. We will encourage, support and strive for success with subsequent teams just as much as the first team.

Teamsheets posted on SOCs are password protected. The current password is: Teamsheet26.

Parents of pupils participating in Stable Court fixtures will be notified directly by a member of staff, via email approximately one week prior to a fixture wherever possible. We no longer require parents to give consent for their child to participate in each individual match and will assume that they will be able to play unless notified otherwise.

Matches are usually played during school hours, although some flexibility is required to play a wide variety of schools.

Collection after fixtures is from the back of the Stable Court hall. Please contact the PE office on juniorsport@claremont.surrey.sch.uk should you have any queries relating to PE, games or fixtures.

individual lessons: music and drama

Tuition for a wide variety of musical instruments and vocal lessons is available for pupils individually during the school day. Lessons are delivered by self-employed visiting music teachers (VMTs). Claremont’s music department facilitates introductions and provides specialist music practice spaces. However, all the detailed arrangements, including the fees, scheduling and the terms are dealt with directly between families and the VMT.

Pupils who play a musical instrument or who are keen singers, are encouraged to join school ensembles, perform in assembles or at early evening concerts to enrich their musical journey. The co-curricular programme has details on the musical ensembles available.

Speech and drama lessons are available to pupils, and lesson culminate in LAMDA graded exams.

school triPs and enrichment

Enrichment opportunities range from day trips and workshops to residential trips during the summer term. Trips are planned using EVOLVE, an online tool for planning and managing education visits and trips. Parents sign up for a myEVOLVE account via the parent portal.

Details of each trip are sent to parents well in advance. Payment for school trips should be made via EVOLVE by the date stipulated in the trip letter. As soon as your payment has been received via EVOLVE this school deems that permission to take part in this trip has been given.

Travel insurance cover is provided for all pupils authorised by the school to undertake a journey within or outside the UK as indicated in the policy schedule which can be found on the website.

The school takes health and safety issues very seriously and all trips are planned with care and are risk assessed. Lead teachers need to access contact information for all pupils on the trip. Therefore we ask parents to keep the school informed of any changes in your contact details.

Any parent who would like the opportunity to support with trips or special days should express their interest via an email to their child’s teacher at the start of the academic year. Parents should be aware that they would need a full DBS check. We ask parents to allow 6 weeks for this checking process.

TRANSPORT

bus network

A school bus network is provided exclusively for the use of our pupils, offering a safe and convenient way of travelling between home and school. Please note that travel on school transport requires a level of confidence and independence. In the junior school we allow pupils from Year 3 upwards to use the bus service. Parents should make arrangements with their child/children and discuss what they should do in case of any unexpected eventualities.

Claremont partners with Vectare, a specialist school transport company, to run this service. All bookings, whether ad hoc or regular journeys, are made via an online booking system which features a personalised journey planning portal, pricing and booking arrangements.

Orderly conduct is mandatory for the bus service, and any pupils failing to abide by the code of conduct will lose the privilege of using the service (temporarily or permanently). Enquiries can be directed to the dedicated transport team at claremontfancourt@vectare.co.uk.

Stable Court pupils who catch the bus home are supervised each day until 4.00pm, after which, they make their way to the buses.

vehicles on site

Stable Court families may use either the top car park for drop off and pick up, approached from the Portsmouth Road (A307) or the Claremont Drive entrance. Pupils who arrive on foot or who cycle may use either entrance. Always observe the speed limit of 10 mph if driving within school grounds and note that the limit drops to 5 mph in the top car park to ensure the safety of pupils.

Stable Court operates a “drop and go” system at both entrances and the playground is supervised from 8.10am.

bicycles

Pupils cycling to and from school must wear a cycle helmet. Cycles should be parked and locked in the Stable Court courtyard during the school day.

MISCELLANEOUS

Parents visiting school

Parents are welcome to visit school during the day for a pre-arranged meeting or when invited to attend an event. However, for the safety and security of pupils, parents must ensure that they sign-in and wear an appropriate badge during their visit. The sign-in location is the Stable Court office.

dogs on site

Well-behaved dogs, kept on a lead, are welcome to join families for Saturday fixtures but at no other times during the week. From time to time, Rosie, our well-being cockerpoo visits under the supervision of our deputy head, pastoral.

PuPils’ health

The care centre (Tel: 01372 473701) is staffed by a team of experienced and fully qualified nurses who are trained in paediatric first aid. Many school staff

also have first aid training and are located throughout the school site. At Claremont, medical care is delivered centrally alongside the individual needs (IN) department and our counselling service in Cedar Lodge (also known as the pupil hub), to ensure a joined-up approach is taken.

The care centre is open from 08.15am – 4.15pm. If there is any aspect of your child’s health you would like to discuss with one of the nurses, please contact the care centre on CareCentre@claremont.surrey.sch.uk

Pupils who become ill during school time should ask permission from their teacher to visit the care centre for assessment by the school nurse. Our nurses can administer over the counter medicines as indicated on your child’s health information form.

If a pupil is too unwell to continue at school, the nurse will contact parents (or named contact) to arrange collection from the care centre. Pupils must not contact their parents asking to be collected from school for any reason.

Pupils may require prescription medicine when in school. Such medication should be stored in the care centre and must be clearly labelled and in its original container. Ad hoc medications should be handed in to the school office alongside a completed form (available from the office). Medicines must be clearly labelled and in its original container. Regular medications should be handed in to the care centre.

emergency medicines

Any child requiring an adrenaline auto injector, inhaler or other emergency medication should carry their own emergency medicine on their person at all times or in the case of young children, this will be stored in the school office. A second set should be stored in the care centre as backup. It is the responsibility of parents to keep a record of the expiry date of the medicine so a replacement can be organised when medicine is stored at school.

The care centre have salbutamol inhalers and auto-injectors, for use in emergencies. This will be for any pupil with asthma or anaphylaxis who has a prescribed inhaler or auto-injector as reliever medication.

immunisations

Central Surrey Health provide an optional flu nasal vaccination for pupils in Reception to Year 6.

gala day

Claremont’s gala day takes place toward the end of the academic year. It is whole school event, including and celebrating all our pupils, welcoming all families and friends of the school.

friends of claremont

The Friends of Claremont Fan Court School (FoCFCS) is the school’s parent association and registered charity, which organises social and fundraising events throughout the school year, including a Christmas fair. The Friends is an integral part of Claremont; and their aim is not only to enrich the education of our pupils but to create and sustain a strong sense of community across the whole school.

The Friends also organise termly good as new uniform sales.

Parents and staff are automatically members of the Friends of Claremont and everyone is invited to get involved, attend, participate and support the events. Support no matter how great or small helps build our community and is appreciated.

If you would like to find out more or get involved, please contact The Friends via: friendsofclaremont@claremont.surrey.sch.uk

lost ProPerty

With a very busy and spacious school site, there are numerous opportunities in any given day for items to be misplaced. It is compulsory that all items which come into school are clearly and securely labelled.

All lost clothing and equipment which is found at Stable Court will be placed in the lost property boxes located at the front of Stable Court. These are emptied at the end of each half term. Any named items will be returned to their owners. Unclaimed, unnamed uniform items will be donated to the good as new uniform sale. Other unnamed items will be donated to charity where appropriate.

Lost property – suggested steps for pupils to take:

1. Retrace the steps from when they believe that they lost the item

2. Look in the lost property boxes as described above bluetooth trackers

The use of Apple Air Tags or similar tracking devices during off site school visits is not permitted. These can pose safety concerns and can be an unnecessary distraction for staff. If staff on a trip are alerted to the presence of a tag, it will be confiscated.

distribution of invitations

Children’s party invitations should never be distributed at school as it causes those not invited or not able to accept to feel excluded.

birthday celebrations

We ask that the children do not bring in sweets, cakes or other food to share as part of their birthday celebration. An alternative suggestion, that you are by no means obliged to take up, is that children bring in a new book that can be placed in the library to share, with a book plate inserted to signify that it was donated on their special day; a short passage could be read aloud in class or assembly as part of the day’s celebration.
