Proposing an architectural strategy to better improve the site’s existing conditions and reconsider the current community enterprise functions, ensuring intergenerational engagement & connection.
Through this, adaptive re-use strategies will be considered in revitalising the Station St strip, enhancing the existing community and site. s t i

Wunya Place facilitates creative production, a major want and need from the Pomona community. These programs allow reconnection between the existing facilities along Station St and will work with them in strengthening intergenerational connections in Pomona. The newly developed programs will ultimately increase visitor traffic within Pomona, supporting not only the new Station St development, but the many local boutiques, restaurants and shops that heavily rely on exterior traffic.

Retaining the existing green buffer from Reserve St is desirable, however the corner block off of the round-a-bout receives the most exposure from visitors when travelling through Pomona. Creating an attraction that draws visitors into Station St is impeccable in developing Pomona’s exposure to visitors and the public.

The area poses great opportunity for tourism and visitors due to its central location within the heart of Pomona and its accessible and walkable journey that revives Pomona’s creative flair.

The site, starting at the Pomona Community House and following along Station St, ends at the Botanical gift shop and proposes endless opportunities for redevelopment in the current activities and programs facilitated along this inactive strip.

W
Located adjacent to Pomona’s main retail strip, the area is already surrounded by the quirky and friendly boutiques, cafes & restaurants Pomona has to offer. Accessibility to the area is already quite legible however it the site has become quite inactive as there are a lack of attraction for visitors to venture down Station St.

E

One of the main existing attractions for visitors along Station St is the Pomona Hotel, well-known for their classic pub food and the 100-year-old colonial character, attracting visitors from all over the Sunshine Coast. The Pub’s architectural character becomes a traditional country backdrop along Station St, placing emphasis on the strong sense of community within the area.

Whilst the location of the site along Station Street is central to the heart of Pomona, it presents some limitations in the much needed exposure the area needs to attract traffic.

Currently, Station st is limited in activity due to the dormancy of the current programs i.e Railway Station Gallery, Station Place.

There is no precise and physical link between these facilities rather than the external footpath on the side of the road stitching each parcel of land together.

Whilst this small commercial area is rather quiet, it tends to become quite busy with locals, leaving a shortage of parking spots. This has forced people to create their own parking spots, blocking existing facilities such as the Railway Gallery entry.

The lower half of Station street containing commercial facilities such as a medical centre, bakery, Bendigo Bank, & newsagency are great for locals however do not attract attention to the historic Station Street strip.

Within the historic strip on Station st lies the Railway Gallery, Station Place community garden, Noosa & District Landcare and a Solicitors office.

While there is an established footpath that runs along the exterior of the Station street strip, an internal link between each of the existing facilities would greatly benefit the circulation within the site. Many of the existing internal paths are not accessible for the elderly or those with disabilities due to rough and uneven surfaces, unsuitable for walkers, wheelchairs etc.

completely masking the unique colonial architecture of Pomona’s historic trains. There is also little to no signage indicating the location of the gallery apart from small, temporary fence signs.
Upon exiting the Pomona Railway Station, visitors are left with no directions or signage to direct them around Station St.

The existing exterior path does not allow for efficient movement throughout the site as foot traffic is currently having to ‘zig-zag’ in and out of each facility.
The inaccessible paths adopt a similar technique, however propose difficulty in use as these pathways are switched into gravel or divided paving. The elderly, disabled and impaired cannot utilise these paths as they do not facilitate walkers and wheelchairs, creating an uneven surface extremely dangerous for those who cannot use it.

The re-developed path creates ‘offshoots’ from the main path, allowing people to flow efficiently throughout the site without the need to double back on yourself. It encourages visitors to experience the existing area with a sense of connectedness to the town, appreciating Pomona’s rich history in art, architecture, heritage and horticulture.

The presented placement option suggests 3 separate pavilion-like structures to be placed further along the Station St strip. Positioning the design along Station St ensures activation and attraction to the lower half of the strip, not only activating the currently ‘inactive’ part of Station St but strengthening the connection between the current anchor facilites that reside along the strip and the town centre. u e t r i c m a s s i n

Ideally, the aim is to attract visitors who travel into Pomona from Reserve St into Station St as shown in the following diagram. Newly developed programs and facilities will be added creating a guided journey through this historic and established strip.
Whilst the positioning of this design attracts traffic from Reserve St, it may not encourage some to venture further down Station St as the ‘main attraction’ has been established in one area.

The location of the site is accessible, rich in foot traffic and has great exposure to the public when passing through, making its location perfect for intergenerational design.
Combining this and the first placement option together will create the heightened opportunity for increased traffic through the Station St Strip, further activating its current facilities and offerings. l u m e t r i c m a s s i n

In remembering Pomona’s original owners of the land, The Gubbi Gubbi people, the design on Wunya Place has been inspired by the traditional place of gathering to strengthen intergenerational connection in Pomona.
To incorporate the notion of a centralised gathering space, the main pavilion/s are located on the corner of Reserve St and Station St, ensuring ultimate exposure when travelling into Pomona.
The first pavilion space would not only be an extension of the Saturday markets, but an exhibition space and public workshop area. From here, traffic is encouraged to move further down Station St to view he rest of the budding strip.

The main pavilion will adopt the theme of ephemera and the arts; allowing the Saturday markets to expand and create opportunity for artists and makers to exhibit their work.
Walter Roth: Studies of Aboriginal ethnoarchitectural forms, Queensland, 1897.

Transluscents are commonly recognised as a medium that the eye cannot see through, however it still projects light and shadows. However, taking away from this stereotypical meaning and relating it to not only the site but indigenous heritage in Pomona meant manipulating its qualities in formulating architectural innovation within Pomona.
Adopting a similar technique of indigenous vernacular architecture, the design for Station St presents the chosen material theme on transluscents in a unique and traditional manner.
Fostering the traditional techniques from our first architects, the Indigenous people, the design will exemplify elements from historic aboriginal architectural framing to manipulate light, sight and convey appreciation to the lands original owners, the Gubbi Gubbi people.

The proposed design spans across the Station St strip, allowing each piece of inactive space to be revitalised. This allows traffic to weave in and out of the inactive pockets of space to experience Pomona’s true heritage.

The main pavilion serves its purpose as not only a gathering space as an extension of the Saturday markets, but a creative expression space for local artists and makers.
This part of Wunya Place will consult directly with Pomona Community House and Lawson Shed in terms of all things creative and hands on.
This space will create an impression as a main landmark from Pomona, acting as a base for visitors and tourists.

The second pavilion visitors will pass on their journey through Station Street is the Station Nursery & Cafe. The nursery works directly with Noosa Landcare in preserving the local ecosystem, facilitating workshops and creating a platform for groups passionate about the local environment.
The cafe is an extension of the nursery and encourages visitors to stay a while and experience the newest nature walk along with Station Street’s existing facilities.

This space also allows visitors to support Pomona’s local economy by purchasing locally grown fauna and flora together with hand-crafted pieces that would fit in perfectly in anyones garden.
stationst
Pomona’s community garden is known as a retreat space for those travelling through the area, however needed redevelopment in creating a worthwhile retreat for utilisation. Visitors and locals are now able realistically access and venture through the garden without limitations.
The garden will remain mostly untouched apart from the addition of new paths, seating and additional vegetation for visitors to enjoy.
Although the Station Place is an existing area, the space needed serious re-consideration to improve functionality, accessibility and overall purpose to the people and visitors of Pomona.
stationst
If entering Station St from the south, visitors are able to park their cars and journey through the street, without having to park away from the area. This encourages the much needed pedestrian traffic that Station St would truly benefit from.
A large amount of make-shift parking spaces were made, often blocking paths and becomin an obstacle for pedestrians to dodge.
stationst
The final redeveloped pocket of space along Station St is an additional car park at the end of the street. Station St’s current parking and pedestrian conditions were not viable to accommodate for extra traffic within the area.
