Jan-Feb. 2022 to April-May. 2022 Group Project

This project tackles the modernization of Singapore's funeral services, specifically focusing on Ang Chin Moh Funeral Directors. The funeral industry is steeped in tradition, and while these traditions hold value, there's a need to acknowledge the evolving needs of future generations.

Funeral services often follow a rigid format, potentially neglecting families' diverse preferences and budgets. Furthermore, the emotional toll of planning a funeral during a difficult time can be immense.

This project explores how Ang Chin Moh can leverage technology and innovation to personalize the funeral experience. We'll delve into potential challenges future users face to redefine funeral services in Singapore, offering a more compassionate, efficient, and personalized experience for future users.

Local literature is unable to break through the literary market in Singapore among international publications as readers are not knowledgeable about what Singlit comprises. Due to the lack of awareness, there is a lack of general interest and appreciation for Singlit. As a bookstore that only carries Singlit titles, the lack of awareness and appreciation for Singlit is a disadvantage for Epigram, whose current structure lacks personal and contextual engagement with its audience to allow them to connect to Singlit.

In the current state where local literature is overlooked, Epigram can be the leading brand that champions local literature to encourage recognition and greater appreciation. We can bridge the gaps in engagement by enhancing their existing platforms and future outreach programmes

Friends With Benefits is an educational app for youths to easily facilitate themselves to access vetted sexual information and connect them to accredited professionals in an informal manner.

Inspired by the beautiful, hidden enclave of Gillman Barracks, Sky Castle was carefully curated and planned to maximize the space potential. Down to the crucial spatial planning, materiality & site analysis of the surroundings as well as the flow within each space, the design aims to welcome users to embrace and immerse themselves in the colonial architecture and the heritage of Gillman Barracks in the heart of a busy city

The space is designed with the void being the main center piece of attention With the light shone from above, it highlights the multiple layers of the structure, emphasizing the density of it Different forms of lounge areas are available, catered for big gathering to small, cozy, private nooks for personal time

Large window opening on both sides allow cross ventilation creating a sustainable environment.

The Sarong Kebaya is one garment that has struck a chord with many Singaporeans. However, with the newer generation, the Peranakan culture will soon permanently vanish. Refreshing what was once the dominant ethnic group in Singapore, designed to cater to the current generation with a futuristic twist The proposal of a co-live & co-work hospitality space aims to connect, educate, and continue the heritage via the iconic Peranakan apparel, the Kebaya. With the concept of ‘embrace the past, re-imagine the present’, the space will have amenities to aid users to embody and the culture in our current modern society.

It will be sited in Dempsey Hill, a heritage hideaway redeveloped into a lifestyle destination that features retail, dining, and entertainment concepts in an oldworld setting. Due to their similar interior design elements, many of the existing architectural elements could remain, creating a more sustainable design as well as preserving both of their historical heritage.

Peranakan furniture and elements are mostly made of wood influenced by Chinese and Malay styles, often fitted with marble as it was cooling to the touch, suitable for Singapore’s all year-long climate. Inspired by runway lights, the strip lights add a present-day feel in this vintage setting, merging the past and present, integrating the Peranakan culture into today’s modern society.

Lights will be emitted from the motif patterned panels. These panels are often seen in Peranakan designs to act as a division between spaces. Some of the concrete floorings are kept to retain the historical architectural value of the original space. Recycled Peranakan motifs tiles can be found cladded onto the stairs floors, and walls to give a spark of the culture’s intricate aesthetic to the space.
