PORTFOLIO 2016-2019 A documentation of work done by Claire Wong during her time in Singapore Polytechnic.

PROLOGUE This portfolio is an archive of works that I have done for the past 3 years in the Diploma of architecture, Singapore Polytechnic. Each project exhibits my raw journey in understanding architecture, my weaknesses, as well as my strengths.

These 3 years have been a rigorous discovery of who I am not only as a designer, but as a friend, a daughter, and a human being. To me, this portfolio is a reflection of my growth as a person during this period of my life.

This journey would not have been possible without my lecturers-Mr Chieu, Mr Chris, and Wen Yi, as well as my friends for their constant support and inspiration.

ATELIER @ JALAN BESAR OFFICE FOR MILLENIALS

CONCEPT In an increasingly advanced workforce, many changes in the typical office typology has been seen.

Right now, the open office is one of the most popular office types. However, with open offices comes with greater lack of privacy and a risk of decreasing productivity.

This begs the question- How can one balance an open office with more privatized spaces? Especially when catering to a diverse design industry in Jalan Besar, how can one pay homage to the local site’s shophouse typology while simultaneously make use of shophouse elements to bring about balance to the two office types?

SITE PLAN

PROGRAMMATIC STRATEGIES The starting point was mapping out the adjacent shophouse dimensions. This followed by choosing to place private and co-working spaces beside each other. To further create buffer zones to separate the private offices, neutral spaces are introduced as an added boundary between co-working and private workspaces.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES 1. OPENABLE WINDOWS Enables cross ventilation and provides users the choice for natural ventilation.

2. LIGHTWEIGHT GREEN ROOF Absorbs heat from the sun, cooling the surrounding areas.

3. SKYLIGHT Allows natural light into the building, lighting the triple volume space.

4. ALUMINUM LOUVERS Shades the light coming in from the skylight, reducing glare and heat.

5. LOW-E COATED GLASS reduces heat from the sunlight entering the space.

PROJECT ONE: DWELLING THE ANGULAR HOUSE The architecture of this house is depicted primarily by angular trapezoidal and triangulated forms. These angular volumes layer and interlock with one another. The act of interlocking and layering is inspired by the technique used by the client, thus paralleling her way of crafting her fashion into the architecture of the house.

WAR MEMORIAL: SCARS IN THE GROUND Tranquility Lane is a memorial dedicated to remembering the unnamed victims and war heroes during the Japanese Occupation. Located at Changi Memorial Museum, it is a pre-museum experience with three main spaces inspired by the emotions of chosen war heroine, Sybil Kathigasu.

FIBONACCI CRYPTEX CONTRADISTINCTION In this Fibonacci cryptex, contradistinction translates the key design driver, order versus disorder, by juxtaposing the methodically placed, opaque rectilinear volumes and transparent rods with the translucent planes that deliberately obstruct the linear flow of the rods.

INTERNATIONAL BIM COMPETITION (2017) SHORTLISTED FINALIST This was my team’s entry of a teaching block that made use of BIM technology such as Dynamo to create the external facade of the building. We also made use of Autodesk Flow design and Revit’s energy analysis to further help the design process of our building.

Our building also made use of Prefabricated Volumetric Construction to make the construction process faster.

TFI SCALE OVERSEAS PROGRAM (2017) MULTI-PURPOSE COMMUNITY CENTRE IN BANN PONGKRAI, CHIANG MAI

VISITOR CENTRE

This overseas exchange was part of the second leg of the 3 month Temasek Foundation SCALE program.

We spent three weeks in Chiangmai, Thailand with our partner institute, the Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL). We spent this time immersed in the mountanous village of Bann Pongkrai to create an elderly-focused community centre for the ageing villagers.

VID’YUT INDUSTRIAL DESIGN COMPETITION (2016) WINNING ENTRY

ARCHITECTURAL INTERNSHIP (2018) ARC STUDIO ARCHITECTURE + URBANISM The bulk experience of working under Arc studio was making the Tembusu exhibition model for the President’s Design Award 2018. I was also entrusted to do projects such as Sentosa OPH hotel, St. Ignatius Church, and Orchard Parade Hotel.
