I’m glad you came and I hope you have a great time at the auction. St. Clare School and St. Clare Preschool are amazing places. When I was a student, I attended public schools and received a good education, but the students at St. Clare receive a GREAT education. We provide Fr. Don a rich educational experience that nurtures not only the intellect but also the heart and soul. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know many of the families that make up our St. Clare community, lots of dedicated and loving parents with neat kids. Our professional and caring faculty work together as a solid team to provide an amazing experience for the students.

This annual auction provides a significant part of the school’s operating budget. It helps us to be not just a good school, but a GREAT Catholic school. Your generosity tonight is much appreciated. Thank you for joining us as we come together as a faith community to support our children as they learn, grow, and thrive at St. Clare School and Preschool.

Proceeds from this event are vital to helping us meet our Mrs. Bloudek operating budget which, in turn, allows us to provide your children with an excellent educational program grounded in faith and community. Please give generously where you are able.

This year has been particularly enjoyable for me, as I find St. Clare to be an excellent school. The teachers and staff are wonderful and I love coming here each day. FROM OUR PRESCHOOL Dear Friends and Family of St. Clare Community, It’s here, the St. Clare Auction! The preschool looks forward to this annual evening which allows us to join the school in this community event, while receiving enhancements to our preschool program.

Every year we use the funds raised from the Endowment paddle bid (which helps support tuition assistance) and the overall preschool percentage for Tuition Assistance funds.

Over the years we have helped many families with the generous donations from this special event.

FROM DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Welcome to St. Clare School and Preschool’s Saturday Live – 2020 Auction! Each year, we look forward to gathering together to mark another year of growth and friendship, and to raise essential funds to support learners and further our school programs. I’d like to encourage you to consider contributing to our special appeals tonight through our annual paddle bids.

The funds from our first paddle bid will be contributed to our Endowment in order to offer tuition assistance to families who need it. Tuition assistance funding ensures that all families who want to provide a Catholic education for their children at St. Clare are able to do so. By giving to our Endowment, you are helping St. Clare School ensure that this wonderful place will remain affordable and accessible to all, now and in the future.

Second, we will raise our paddles to fund updates to our school playground. As you know, play is a crucial part of child development – not only improving social skills, but also positively contributing to achievement and learning in classrooms. Our playground is in need of updating and repair in order to make it a safe and inclusive space that encourages active play for all students at St. Clare.

Saturday Live theme was chosen this year to help remind us to have fun, laugh and share those gifts with those around us. This theme captures the positive energy, excitement, laughter and all around greatness that is our St. Clare community of parents, students and staff.

AUCTION RULES All of our donors have been very generous — to show our appreciation and respect, please use all items, vacation homes, etc., no later than March 7, 2021 unless otherwise specified.

Thank you for understanding. Substitutions are not available.

Registration: All guests must check in upon arrival to receive their registered bid number. Only bids made by registered users will be honored. When bidding for any item, you agree to pay the amount bid if it is determined to be the successful bid.

Live Auction: The auctioneer and his assistants determine the successful bidder for every item sold in the live auction. To bid during the live auction, hold your bid card high until the auctioneer acknowledges your bid.

End of Evening Raffle: The winning ticket will be picked at 9:00 pm during the live auction. Winner does not need to be present to win.

Payment and Item Removal: Before going to the cashier, obtain a computerized list of your successful bids and other purchases made during the evening. With printouts in hand, proceed to the cashier for payment. Payment by cash, personal check, Visa, American Express, MasterCard or Discover Card.

Payment must be made in full on the night of the auction.

Upon receiving your paid receipt, go to item pick up where a volunteer will greet you. Our volunteer will borrow your receipt and retrieve your purchases for you. Please do not go directly to the display tables to retrieve your purchases. A PAID receipt is required before any item may be taken from the auction site.

For security reasons, all auction purchases must be moved from the premises immediately following the event. Exceptions can be made for items too large to remove on auction night. In this case, purchasers may make arrangements after the auction by emailing auction@stclarepdx.org.

AUCTION RULES Please pick-up all items no later than March 22, 2020.

Pick up times will be determined and notification will be sent via email. Bring your paid receipt when picking up items.

ALL SALES ARE FINAL. There are no exchanges or refunds.

No cash refunds are available on unused portions of gift certificates. There are no extensions of expiration dates. All auction items expire on March 7, 2021, unless otherwise noted.

Item Usage: Unless otherwise specified, all auction certificates and services must be used WITHIN ONE YEAR OF PURCHASE. Please pay close attention to expiration dates as some may expire less than one year from the date of issue. Reservations for vacation packages must be mutually agreed upon with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed for canceled tickets, accommodations or travel packages.

Please note restriction dates for vacation homes, restaurants, certificates, and other items. No substitutions, please!

Liability: The St. Clare Auction Team has done its very best to describe items correctly, but all goods and services are sold “as is.� St. Clare Parish neither warrants nor represents and shall in no event be responsible for the correctness of description, authenticity, authorship or condition.

Auction Proceeds: All proceeds for the St. Clare Auction, including the paddle bids, are distributed 95% to St. Clare School and 5% to St. Clare Preschool.

Note on FFG: Because paddle bids are for specific, additional projects that are above and beyond the operating budget of the school, contributions to the paddle bids do not count toward FFG.

Highest bidder picks first!

Who can resist a scrumptious dessert? Ensure your table has a perfect ending to a delicious meal by generously filling out the dessert dash bidder card on your table. Teamwork is the name of the game as the table with the highest combined bid gets first chance at dashing to the dessert table and claiming their yummy prize. You’ll have to act quickly, though, as the next highest bid will be called quickly and their runner will dash for dessert...then the next... and next...

Dessert Dash Rules 1. A “Dessert Dash Bidders Card” is located on each table.

Each person at the table can decide how much they want to contribute by entering their bidder number and bid amount. (Dessert dash bids will be added to your receipt.)

2. Once everyone has put their bid on the card, total the combined table amount. An eighth grade runner will collect the completed cards before dinner is over.

3. Designate one person to be the “Dessert Dasher.” This person must remain seated at your table until your table name is announced. Then the dessert dasher will run to the dessert table and pick the dessert of their choice.

4. The auctioneer will announce the table with the highest bid to start and then will quickly call the next highest bids in descending order until all the bidding tables have been called.

COLLAGRAPH CITY

First Grade Art

First graders have been studying the built environment.

We recently completed a project in which we illustrated our own neighborhoods from a bird’s-eye view. Before making this collagraph print, we studied the illustrations of the contemporary artist James Gulliver Hancock, who has a blog dedicated to drawing all of the buildings in New York. We looked at many of his drawings and noticed the different types of building shapes, roofs, doors, windows and decorations. First graders then worked on their own building design, first drawing them out on paper, then cutting them out of foam. The unique multi-layered printing plate is called a collagraph.

On “printing day� each student had a hand in inking the plates and pressing the paper to create the print. We pulled the final print together as a class. It was wonderful to see the students delight in creating a large artwork as a class community.

GELLI PRINT COLLAB

Fourth Grade Art

Fourth grade used their knowledge of Gelli printing from a previous lesson to create this collaborative piece. For the background, students coated the Gelli plate with a thin layer of paint, then added texture with paint brushes, sponges and even a fork. The prints were layered together until the background was completely filled. For the top layer, we chose some richer, bolder colors, using stencils to create another layer of designs. Gelli printing was a favorite lesson of this year, and fourth graders were very excited to have another chance to explore the tools and techniques in more depth.

What is the Endowment?

The St. Clare School Endowment is comprised of three endowed funds which are invested in a group fund called the Catholic Education Endowment Fund (CEEF). Each of the funds were established exclusively for the benefit of St. Clare School to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the school and to support the economic viability of a private, Catholic education for all of our students.

How does the Endowment work?

The principal balance in the fund remains untouched, and St. Clare is free to use the earnings received from investing the principal balance. Our current balance is just over $2.1M and distributions have totaled over $440,000 in the past 6 years!

The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation has provided us with $150,000 in matched funds since 2014 for Tuition Assistance and other programs.

METAL WALL HANGING

Sixth Grade Art

Sixth graders learned about the art of repoussé and metal tooling. We reviewed organic and geometric lines, then created a heart design based on the theme of love, compassion, and kindness. The design was transferred to a soft metal plate, and then emphasized by pressing on the metal with special tools, using a technique called repoussé.

This technique stretches the metal, which gives it the unique three-dimensional effect. Some students chose phrases and words to hammer into the metal with letter stamps.

Students finished their pieces by using India ink to create an antique, weathered look.

Kayaking with Fr. Don

Fr. Don has once again graciously donated an absolutely priceless opportunity—a leisurely three-hour kayak tour on the Willamette River. Prepare your paddle. CYANOTYPE QUILT

Kindergarten Art

Kindergarteners studied cyanotypes, one of the oldest forms of photography. They also learned about the artist Andy Goldsworthy, who creates art using only natural objects such as leaves, flowers, stones, sticks, water and ice. They used pressed flowers and leaves to make a composition on a piece of fabric that had been treated with the special cyanotype substance to make it sensitive to light. We left our compositions in the art room near the windows for 24 hours to expose. We removed the flowers and leaves, rinsed the fabric, and the image appeared like magic. Any part that was covered by a plant or flower was left unexposed and white. Everything else turned a brilliant Prussian blue.

The wonderful Susan Humm, grandmother to Charlotte (K), Keagan (2) and Connor (3), sewed and quilted our cyanotype fabric into this beautiful quilt.

WELL-LOVED WEAVING

Seventh Grade Art

Seventh grade began this project by learning about weaving techniques. Sarah McCully-Posner, professional weaver and mom of Finn (6), gave the students a detailed presentation on the tools and process of weaving, including bringing in her own looms for students to try first-hand. Students then began work on their own weaving, working on a loom built by St. Clare parent and husband of Ms. Lifschutz, Todd Yuratich. Each student brought in an item from their own lives to weave in. On the neutral background, the pops of color and texture include ties from Peer Mediation sweatshirts, hair ribbons, strips of well-loved t-shirts, friendship bracelets, and much more. Mrs. McCully-Posner graciously came to class each week to help students work on the weaving.

PLAYGROUND PROJECT

Paddle Bid

Outdoor play is a crucial part of child development. Not only does it improve social skills, but it also increases levels of focus, achievement and learning in classrooms.

Our current playground equipment is aging and many of our structures are too high and outdated based on today’s recommended playground standards. This can lead to potential injury for students. Our playground is in need of updating and repair in order to make it a safe and inclusive space that encourages active play for all students at St. Clare.

Let’s work together to make our outdoor space even more beneficial for our school.

The funds earned tonight will contribute to replacing our decommissioned rock wall with new and safer climbing structures, rechaining or replacing our swings and removing a portion of our main play structure. We plan to continue this work in phases, with future improvements focusing on the field and track as well as additional updates to the main playground area.

PRINTED QUILT

Second Grade Art

Second grade studied the quilts of contemporary artist Lu Summers. Her quilts are full of bold, colorful shapes. Second grade created a relief printing plate by carving designs into styrofoam. Using their best coloring skills, they colored each section of their plate with Crayola markers. We then tiled all the pieces together. The “printed quilt” was created by pressing a wet piece of printmaking paper onto the colored plates. Second grade cheered when the print was pulled— their designs came together beautifully to make a unique work of art.

POP ART SUPPLIES

Eighth Grade Art

Eighth graders studied the pop art art movement before beginning this project. We specifically looked at the work of Andy Warhol and how he colorfully glorified ordinary objects such as soup cans. Ms. Lifschutz thought it was only appropriate that our theme be “art supplies.� Students chose from a large selection of curated supplies and took a closeup photo of their object. In the app Photoshop Mix they isolated the object and placed it on a textured background.

They created 4 copies of their composition. Without changing the shape of the object or background, they altered the color of each until there was contrast and balance amongst them. Their compositions were tiled together and printed directly on wood panel.

In the fall, third grade studied and created artwork based off the work of Wassily Kandinsky, who is sometimes called “the father of abstract art.�

We loved the project so much that we decided to collaborate on making a piece of art for the auction using the same Inspired by Kandinsk theme and techniques. y The circles in squares were created using watersoluble oil pastels. The panel we used was coated with a special, super absorbent substance that mimics watercolor paper. Students drew a circle, then pulled the color inward using a wet brush, filling the shape. They worked carefully and thoughtfully to create their circles and choose their colors.

BLOCK PRINTED TEXTILE

FIFTH GRADE ART

Fifth grade began their project by learning about how block printed fabric is made in India. In India, the artists use carved wood blocks to create their designs. For our project, we used a flexible block printing material called Soft Kut. Students planned their designs, drew them on the Soft Kut, and carved their block with special linoleum cutting tools. They each printed their block several times on the fabric.

While we were working on this project, students also studied textiles from other parts of the world. They researched and presented textiles from Japan, Iceland, Turkey, Africa, Cambodia and many other places.
