Claire Elizabeth Gallery is pleased to present “Ensemble”, a group exhibition of abstract and non-representational work by Jennifer Gibbs, Kellie Lawler, Logan Ledford, & Neal Novak. During the 20 century, artists began to shift towards “modern art” in which abstracted and/or non-objective subject matter expressed an artist’s point of view. “Modern Art” allowed artists the freedom of expression and, in return, paved the way for viewers to have more ownership over interpretation - allowing their own life experiences to inform how they “see” & understand the work in question.
“Ensemble” is an ode to modern art rendered through contemporary voices. Titled for the French word for “together”, the exhibition is curated to encourage viewers to see “pairings” or how two or multiple artists’ work can live together as a collection. We welcome collectors to consider the work as a meeting of minds who use color, geometric form, line work, and texture as a means of creative expression. The exhibition will be on view Sept. 4 to Oct. 20th.

Neal Novak
Originally from the Dallas area, Novak lived most of his life in Baton Rouge, LA. It was there, inspired by the landscapes and waterways of the Gulf South, he dedicated himself to painting. With encouragement from his uncle, Ron Lindsey, also a professional artist, and inspiration from painters such as Richard Diebenkorn, Raimonds Staprans, and Joan Mitchell, Novak slowly developed a style of painting focused on layering and depth.
Novak is a self-taught artist interested in conveying depth, serenity, and fluidity in his work. Line, color, and shape inform his approach, but ultimately a painting only works for him when it captures a particular mood. Novak strives to engage and even challenge the viewer, requiring them to retrace the steps he took during the creative process.
Novak usually approaches a canvas with a particular endpoint in mind. After each session, he examines the work, reevaluates his goals, and sketches out on paper his new vision for the painting. A particular work may go through dozens of iterations before a final version emerges. A quote from Richard Diebenkorn, which he keeps in his studio, serves as a reminder that painting is a journey that requires both imagination and dedication: “I can never accomplish what I want—only what I would have wanted had I thought of it beforehand.” Ideally, the end product is surprising and familiar all at once.
Novak currently lives and works in Arizona. In addition to Louisiana, he has shown his work in Arizona, California, Mississippi, & Massachusetts.

Logan Ledford
Logan Ledford was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and received her Bachelor of Interior Design from Louisiana State University in 2009. In 2015, she studied under Anne Cicero at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. Ledford also has a background in graphic design working at an advertising agency for 5 years. Alongside pursuing a career as an artist, she also works in the film industry as a graphic designer. Ledford’s work has been exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and galleries across the United States. Her work has been reviewed by Garden and Gun Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. Ledford lives and works in New Orleans.
In her own words:
My work is a study of control and unpredictability through the disciplined structure of grids and the organic form of textured paint. Working primarily with acrylic paint and occasionally incorporating mixed media, I arrange circular shapes of color within precise grids. This layout reflects my perfectionism and a deep-seated need for order, while the textured surfaces of each circle represent the uncontrollable moments and stress that surface in daily life. Grounded in color theory, texture, and process, each piece follows a meticulous method, with colors selected in advance according to theoretical rules or thematic direction. Through repetition and variation, these works become a narrative on stability in the face of disorder.

Kellie Lawler
Kellie Lawler is an Alabama based artist. Her work incorporates structured design and pattern mixed with the freedom of a Picasso-style continuous line technique. This process offers Lawler both the freedom in creating a subject in one continuous line and the controlled hard edge of painting. Her goal is to create a graphic perspective on human figures, nature and other subjects.
Lawler developed her creative skills at her high school in Baltimore, MD which provided an extensive elective art program. At Brown University, she played Division I Lacrosse, and her focus shifted to sports and her studies. As can happen, her love for art fell to the wayside. She graduated from Brown with a BA Psychology and moved across the United States with her family. Finally settling in Alabama and getting her four children settled into school, she dusted off her old art portfolio and began to create again.
Since then, she has exhibited her work in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Her work has been published in House Beautiful, Atlanta Homes, Louisiana Life and Birmingham House & Gardens.

Jennifer Gibbs
Jennifer Gibbs is an artist from Lake Charles, Louisiana. From a young age, Gibbs had a drive to create. Born the youngest of six into a family of creatives, Gibbs cultivated her own style of storytelling through art. Vivid memories of painting with her Mother, an artist, shaped her early practice, which continues into her work today. Gibbs draws artistic inspiration primarily from meditation and nature. Her extensive body of work ranges from abstract expressionism to delicate botanicals to moody landscapes. Gibbs builds her composition layer by layer, meticulously mixing mediums until the piece is to her liking. Whether working in abstract or traditional styles, she uses a variety of tools and media to achieve unique textures, depth and color precision.
Gibbs currently lives and works in Nashville. In addition to Louisiana, Gibbs has shown her work in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Her pieces have been published in House Beautiful, Southern Living, LUXE Magazine and Coastal Living. Although the majority of her works are held in private collections, Gibbs work has also been included in the corporate collection of a Fortune 500 company as well as the public collection of Brechtel Hospitality/Copper Vine.
