We’ve also had a huge amount of success in helping older people star t something new. Many of our clients have taken up new hobbies such as learning to dance, play instruments, knit and cook specialist dishes. If there’s something new you’d like to star t, or an old passion you’d like to revisit, we can find you the right person to help.

Dementia is more common than you probably realise.

One in six adults over 80 in the UK live with dementia. And yes, it’s pretty scary for those living with the disease, and their loved ones.

While there is currently no cure for dementia, there is care and with the right suppor t, we can help maintain a high quality of life even in the face of memory loss.

Studies have shown that staying in familiar surroundings of home can help older people living with dementia to feel safe and remain calm.

There is a section on page 18 which provides more information on our specialist dementia care and suppor t.

Reduce your risk of hospitalisation It is often the case that vulnerable people reach a crisis point before they receive suppor t and this is something we at Home Instead want to help prevent. We want to help older people to live well at home for longer and reduce the risk of them being hospitalised.

Here, we offer FOUR ways to help keep your loved one out of hospital.

Get a good GP Having an excellent GP is essential but equally impor tant is making sure that older people follow their GP’s direction. Our CAREGivers are trained to spot ‘red flag’ changes in health such as worsening chronic conditions or unused medication,and can act to remedy this.

They can also assist with transpor tation to appointments and help with medication management.

Keep physically and mentally active Keeping active where possible has many benefits which Get Doncaster Moving discuss on page 24-28. There are lots of fantastic groups throughout Doncaster for you to join such as music, spor ts, exercise, social, dance, ar t, and many more. Keeping the brain active through activities such as drawing, doing a puzzle, or learning something new are great ways to stimulate the connections between nerve cells.

Companionship Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health so it’s impor tant to encourage social activities such as attending a lunch club or memory café or joining a social club. Home Instead can help you with all of the above – from companionship visits to preparing healthy meals – so that your family member can live life well and reduce the risk of going into hospital.

We believe that with the right care, the number of unnecessary hospital admissions can be reduced.

Help us help you – stay well this winter campaign In Doncaster, we are actively suppor ting the national NHS winter campaign to help you stay as well as you possibly can during the winter months.

Cold weather can be seriously bad for your health.

That’s why it’s impor tant to look after yourself and ensure your home is warm, especially during the cold winter months. If you star t to feel unwell, even if it’s a cough or a cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious. Seek advice from your pharmacist.

Seasonal coughs and colds are very common during the winter period. You can ask your chemist what medicines should be in your cabinet and how to help you and your family get through the winter season.

Doncaster’s winter campaign will run until the end of January and focus on four key areas below to help you stay well. And if you do become ill, it is impor tant that you take early action to prevent your condition from getting worse.

Flu vaccinations A flu jab not only helps protect you from the virus, it will also help protect your family and friends. If you’re over 65 or have a long term heath condition, it’s likely you are eligible for a free flu jab. Contact your local practice to find out more.

Medication requests If you take regular medication, it is impor tant to ensure you have enough in case you cannot leave your home. order enough medication to last you during the Christmas and New Year period. In the event that you do run out of prescribed medication, please contact the Same Day Health Centre, GP out of hours service, your local pharmacist or NHS 111 who should be able to assist with an emergency supply.

Supporting and looking out for each other If you know someone who is frail, elderly or has an existing health problem and they are feeling unwell, encourage them to seek early advice, go to their local pharmacy or phone your GP practice before the issue escalates and they end up in hospital.

Are all your personal affairs in order?

We know that thinking about your own death is not at the top of anyone’s list but that doesn’t mean you should skip to the next page! What you may not know is that if you do leave this world without having made the proper provisions, your family will be left facing a minefield of paperwork and legality at what will already be a difficult time.

Worse still, they won’t even know whether their effor ts to unravel that minefield will lead to what you’ve left behind being shared out the way you always wanted it to. In extreme cases, this can leave relatives in financially difficult circumstances while they wait for the cour ts to make their decision as to what will go where.

But the good news is just putting a little time aside now to go through this simple 5-step plan will take care of everything for you, your family and both of your futures.

Lasting Power of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (or LPA) is a legal document that allows someone to make decisions for you should you no longer be able to or no longer want to make them for yourself.

It is something that is almost even easier to put off than writing a Will but imagine for a moment you could well find yourself in hospital in your later years, temporarily unable to pay everyday bills or pop out to the bank or post office or even access savings online. What would you do? Or, worse still, if dementia has taken away your ability to make crucial decisions, how would you take care of yourself long-term?

These are the types of circumstances that can be overcome by legally providing someone you trust with Lasting Power of Attorney.

Organise your paperwork Prepare your Will Shockingly almost 60% of the UK’s population do not have a current Will. It is one of those things that is all too easy to put off, but the truth is that having a Will is the ONLY way to ensure all your wishes are followed.

If you do not have a Will the decision as to what will happen to your money, proper ty and other valuables is left to the cour t. If you really want to make sure your family and friends are looked after exactly as you’d like them to be, you (and your spouse or par tner) simply must have a Will.

While you know where everything is and how your finances and proper ty breaks down, it may not be quite so clear for those tasked with the execution of your Will.

Make sure impor tant documents like your marriage and bir th cer tificates are kept in one place alongside information on your bank accounts, investments, pension and proof of ownership for your proper ties.

Talk to your family If you would like the members of your family to perform specific roles (i.e. acting as your attorney or executor) or you have chosen to split your loved ones inheritances in a cer tain way, we would always suggest you sit your family down to explain how and why you have made your decisions. While this provides an oppor tunity to make sure no last-minute amendments are required, it will also minimise the potential for disputes to flare up between family members and other beneficiaries during the execution of your Will. Contesting a Will is almost always a long and arduous – not to mention expensive - process and one your family should be spared at all costs.

Eat well, live well!

Eating well Food and nutrition play an impor tant role in staying well. But many people lose their interest in food as they get older and, according to Home Instead Senior Care research, one in five over 75s struggle to cook their own food.

Specialist Dietitian Laura Clarke from the RDaSH NHS Trust Dietetic Service explains why its impor tant to eat well (pages 8- 10).

Healthy Eating AÂ healthy balanced diet which includes all food groups in the right propor tions to maintain a healthy weight is vital to maintaining health. A balanced diet will provide all the nutrients needed by the body and the following healthy eating tips can help achieve this:

Base meals on high fibre starchy carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes and cereals and include one por tion of these with meals. Higher fibre options keep you much fuller for longer Fruit and vegetables; aim to eat at least 5 por tions per day and include a variety of fruit and vegetables including salad. One por tion is 80g (30g dried fruit, 150 mls fruit juice) and fresh, frozen, dried, canned (in natural juice) and juice all count.

Eat more fish; including oily fish e.g. salmon and sardines. The ideal is to include one por tion of white fish such as cod, haddock and plaice and one por tion of oily fish per week. Give consideration to how the fish is to be cooked and be mindful to the frequency that battered fish and fried fish options are consumed.

Oily fish provide omega oils which are beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Cut down on saturated fat and sugars. The main types of fat include saturated and unsaturated fats. The advised daily limit for a male is 30g saturated fat and 20g for women. Saturated fats are found in products such as pies, pasties, biscuits, cakes and visible fat on meats as well as processed foods. Consuming too much of these food types can increase cholesterol levels.

Sugars occur naturally in foods such as milk and fruit.

However those likely to increase calorie intake and contribute to tooth decay are added to foods such as cakes and biscuits, sweets and chocolate, sugary drinks and alcohol. As a standalone in the right propor tion size fruit and milk are par t of a healthy diet.

Eat less salt; no more than 6g per day for adults.

Salt is naturally present in many foods with higher amounts in processed foods. More than 1.5g of salt per 100g in food is considered high. Eating too much can contribute to increased blood pressure therefore careful consideration needs to be given to the por tion size and frequency that these foods are consumed.

Not sprinkling extra salt on food will be also be helpful.

Get active and maintain a healthy weight: a healthy balanced diet with foods consumed in the right propor tion can help maintain a healthy weight and body mass index. Consuming too many calories on a frequent basis can lead to weight gain.

Regular exercise may help to reduce the risk of getting serious health conditions as well as promoting health and well being.

Keep hydrated; do not get thirsty.

The recommendation is for 6-8 glasses of fluid per day in addition to fluid consumed in food, to prevent the effects of dehydration. All non-alcoholic beverages count, be mindful of full fat/sugar versions of drinks.

The importance of breakfast; do not skip breakfast. A healthy breakfast forms par t of a healthy diet, it will provide a source of energy and contribute to more balanced eating throughout the day.

Malnutrition Malnutrition or poor nutrition; is a serious condition that occurs when a person’s diet fails to contain the right amount of nutrients.

Over nutrition results from consuming excess nutrients.

Under-nutrition reflects too few nutrients.

Symptoms of malnutrition (under-nutrition) include unintentional weight loss, low body weight, feeling tired and lethargic, frequent illness with longer recovery times. Weight loss should never be considered a natural par t of ageing.

Those with long term conditions which affect appetite or require additional energy intake are par ticularly susceptible. However income, socialisation and reduced mobility can also be factors.

Small changes including eating on a little and often basis and including more high calorie and protein food choices such as puddings/desser ts and between snacks can help. Full fat milky drinks can also be beneficial.

Food for tification is a first line intervention and does reflect a relaxation in healthy eating principles.

Always speak with a healthcare professional for advice if this proves insufficient to promote weight recovery or you have a specific dietary requirements.

Signs & Symptoms of Dementia

Recognising the signs and symptoms of Dementia in yourself or a loved one can mean an earlier diagnosis and access to the many local dementia services in Doncaster. You can find details of these local services in the coming pages.

Trouble understanding visual images, seeing objects in three dimensions and judging distances: For some people, having vision problems is a sign e.g. they might not realise they are the person in the mirror.

Here are some of the warning signs that are impor tant to look out for :

Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps: Placing things in random unusual places. Sometimes the person may accuse others of stealing the items.

Memory loss that disrupts daily life: One of the most common signs is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information.

Changes in planning or solving problems: Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers.

Difficulty performing everyday tasks: People sometimes may have trouble driving to a familiar location, or remembering the rules of a favourite game.

Difficulty planning, making decisions and solving problems.

Changes in mood or personality.

Did you know singing has many health benefits?

It’s engaging! Research shows that singing activates the left side of the brain and listening to music sparks activity in the right-hand side. Music means that the whole brain is stimulated,and more mind power than usual is being exercised.

Singing releases the feel good brain chemical - the right music will lift your spirits Singing relieves the boredom. As well as being a fun, engaging, meaningful activity it is also a workout!

Singing and music is also repor ted to help retain speech and language, help tackle anxiety and depression and improve quality of life.

Singing will reach those emotions and bring feelings back.

Music clearly has a huge impact on the lives of people living with dementia and music is just one of the ways our CAREGivers help our clients to live life well, whether that be singing along and playing their favourite songs in their home, taking them to a music group or show at the theatre,

www.donmentia.org DonMentia is a very special and very successful local charity. It was founded in 2012 by Eileen Harrington,a remarkable, hard-working, determined (and very nice!) lady. She knows first-hand the challenges that carers face in looking after their loved ones, having cared for her husband, Don, through dementia for many years.

Having to cope largely alone, she had often felt lonely, desolate and isolated, and realised it would help others in a similar situation to have events and social occasions that anyone living with dementia, and their carer, could attend, thus getting a break from the endless, problematic behaviours that are so draining.

To do this she needed to raise some money but after a slow star t she must now be one of Doncaster’s best-known figures and she uses this fact to obtain more suppor t. Once enough funds had been raised Eileen first set about becoming a registered charity and then organising the events, trips and activities, which act as a lifeline in many instances. Raising sufficient money to make them completely free to attend was always the aim and intention and still is the case.

This piece is being written in early November 2019, and in just the last four weeks she has organised two outings, one restaurant meal, one drop-in café and a trip to the theatre with well over 200 people benefiting. And that is just a normal month for Eileen and DonMentia! In the last seven years, her work adds up to more than 150 events attended by around 6,000 people, meaning 3,000 people living with dementia have had a really fun break and 3,000 carers have had a chance to recharge their batteries and socialise with others in a similar situation, knowing everyone around them understands and sympathises with their problems.

DonMentia is a registered charity with busy and enthusiastic trustees and a group of volunteers to assist Eileen, whether at the events, on promotional stands or by fundraising to maintain its impetus at full steam. It is wor th stressing that no one is paid and no one claims expenses, so every penny donated is used to suppor t and benefit Doncaster people affected by dementia.

In 2019 DonMentia launched two additional initiatives. First, it offers financial and practical suppor t to suppor t anyone wishing to set up their own dementia suppor t group within the Doncaster area. Second, it has another fund to offer financial help to any carer in real need of some respite care. If you would like to apply for either of these funds, please find an application form on the website. Completed applications will be discussed at the charity’s next monthly meeting.

DonMentia is quietly making a real difference in Doncaster to people with dementia and their carers. And, of course, a big thank you is due to the people of Doncaster for their generous donations and continuing suppor t for its fundraising activities.

Dementia Carers Workshop DCLC, a local voluntary group is running a creative workshop every Tuesday from 12pm to 3pm at DCLC. The workshop is for :  carers whose English is not their stronger language, whether you are in a paid or unpaid role looking after someone with dementia.  come and share your experiences with others and in developing free activities for those you care for.  communicate with others in a similar situation and get advice from experienced volunteers.

DEMENTIA TOP TIPS

Top tips when caring for a person with dementia

Speak to them as you would with any other person.

Understand how objects appear.

Don’t argue with a person.

Think about aids which might help memory.

Busy patterns can confuse the eye so make sure items like plates, tablecloths and bedding are in bold, solid colours.

Dementia can cause a person to lose their ability to reason and see both sides of the argument.

Labels with words or pictures around the house can be useful if a person forgets where items are. Calendar docks work well too.

Treat them like anybody else

Ask why?

Support them around nutrition

Remember that a person with dementia is still a person with emotions, desires and a life history.

Keep a check on non-verbal signs. The better you get to know a person, the easier it will be to identify what they are trying to communicate.

Make mealtimes a social affair and enjoy eating together.

Offer a more limited choice to make decision making easier

Engage in everyday conversation. Don’t bombard them; too many questions can cause confusion.

Step into their reality People with dementia may have a distorted sense of time. It may be better to ‘join’ their reality and accept what they are saying rather than causing unnecessary anxiety or upset.

Help them to stay active and engaged Appeal to their senses, it could be playing a puzzle or going for a walk to their favourite park.

Reducing the choice makes it easier for the person living with dementia to make a decision.

Get Doncaster Moving Get Doncaster Moving is a programme which aims to help Doncaster’s communities become healthier and more vibrant, by increasing participation in physical activity and sport.

Guidelines for adults aged 65 years+ 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity with 2 sessions to increase hear t rate (cardio) and 2 sessions that increase overall body strength.

It is impor tant for older adults to do exercises which improve balance and co-ordination as this helps to reduce the risk of falls.

These do not need to be performed for long periods of time.

Just 10 minutes of increasing your hear t rate a little and getting warm is enough to count towards your physical activity recommendations.

Meeting these guidelines can have many benefits for your physical health, and your mental well being. It also is a great way to help you meet new people.

Jackie’s Story Caregiver Jackie, from Armthorpe, has been with Home Instead for 2 ½ years, and says,

“It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. ” Jackie visits her clients in their own homes, providing personalised care and companionship and has really gone above and beyond for those that she provides care for.

She has built long lasting, trusting relationships with her clients, and has cer tainly made a positive difference to her clients and their families’ lives.

After working in a supermarket for many years, Jackie was seeking a job that felt more rewarding and got in touch with Home Instead.

Since working as a CAREGiver, Jackie has seen her confidence grow not only in care but in all aspects of life. Jackie commented,

“Eighteen months ago, I sadly lost my husband to leukaemia. I strongly believe that my job as a CAREGiver helped me through my bereavement, keeping me busy and meeting new people.

Jayne’s Story After working in customer service roles for over 10 years I felt that I needed a change of direction but wasn’t sure what. When out walking my dog at a local nature reserve I got speaking to another dog walker who mentioned his wife worked in care and found it very rewarding.

Intrigued, I went straight on the laptop when I got home and researched home care. My search came up with many home care companies but

“Visits to my clients and making them smile makes me feel like I am doing my job right and giving them a better quality of life, and gives me so much job satisfaction.”

I do all sor ts of activities with my clients, from jigsaw puzzles, dominoes, cards, dancing and singing to their favourite music, golf in the park, walking football, whist drives, ten pin bowling, crazy golf and much more.

“what stood out to me was a company that provided a minimum of one our calls and CAREGivers were matched to their clients.”

I phoned Home Instead and spoke to their Recruitment Manager Gill who invited me into the office for an informal chat about the role. I was then booked onto the Home Instead’s training programme where I learnt about all aspects of care. After passing the training I then went out in the community shadowing other CAREGivers and within a few weeks I had my own clients.

I soon realised that joining Home Instead was the right career path for me. I sadly lost my father 5 years ago to Alzheimer’s and have been able to increase my knowledge and interest in all forms of Alzheimers through the Home Instead specialist City and Guilds accredited Dementia Training Programme.

To provide emotional and practical suppor t and information to carers in areas of education, finance, social care, health, leisure and training.

Cold, damp homes have a negative impact on health and well being, and some of Doncaster’s residents may be missing out on essential advice and suppor t for winter. A warm home is key to promoting independence and can prevent health conditions getting worse, par ticularly for our most vulnerable community members.

About the Energy Team The Energy Team at Doncaster Council can provide free advice and suppor t to the local people, including: •

Advice, information and suppor t in relation to making the home warmer and healthier and saving money on energy bills.

• Access to help with heating and energy improvements or those that qualify.

• Further signposting and support where needed, including help with benefits and income maximisation.

Staying cool during summer It’s fair to say that we all look forward to the summer, especially when we are blessed with par ticularly warm and sunny weather. The sunshine makes us feel happy and it offers a great source of vitamin D to keep us healthy. However, higher temperatures and humidity can also present risks to our health. Older people’s bodies in par ticular, are often unable to adjust to sudden changes in temperature, which makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to make the most of the summer weather but stay cool in the process:

1.

Avoid the hottest times of the day (between 11am – 3pm) – if you do need to venture out make sure you aren’t outside for long periods of time and find shady spots when you can.

2.

Keep hydrated – even if you’re not thirsty it’s impor tant to drink plenty of water or fruit juice to replace fluids lost during sweating. Avoid caffeine or alcohol which increase dehydration.

3.

Think lightweight – choose clothing which is loose, lightweight, light coloured and breathable such a white linen shir t.

4.

Cool down – take cool showers and baths when possible. If you’re out and about, use a cotton hankie soaked in cool water and place it on the back of your neck and on your wrists.

Pick the perfect spot – seek out the coolest areas of your home during warmer weather. Keep cur tains and blinds closed to prevent sun heating up rooms, especially your bedroom.

In Doncaster, a wide range of primary care services exist, to help keep people fit and healthy. These include pharmacies, local practice, Doncaster Same Day Health Centre, the GP out of hour’s service and community nurses.

Headway Doncaster is a local branch of the national charity Headway UK - the brain injury association. As a branch we offer support to people in the Doncaster District and surrounding areas for people who lives have been affected by Brain Injury.

We meet for coffee and a chat on the last Wednesday of the Month 10am to 12 noon at Cantley Community Centre Goodison Boulerard Doncaster DN4 6DF. So whatever issue or complaint people have, there is always a service that can provide the right information, suppor t, advice and treatment.

The Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Montagu Hospital is run by a dedicated and highly skilled Emergency Nurse Practitioners who provide care for less serious injuries, such as sprains, cuts, grazes, minor burns, bites and stings. Many people go to an Emergency Depar tment, when they could be treated much more quickly at the Minor Injuries Unit. The unit can also arrange X-Rays for possible broken bones and treat minor eye and ear injuries.

Let’s b:friend. b:friend befriending volunteers pledge to visit a socially isolated older neighbour near them for one hour per week for a cuppa and a chat, listening and supporting someone that otherwise may have no one. b:friend also run fanatic social clubs where members can enjoy activities from performing songs from the Broadway, designing tattoos, making bird boxes, chocolate tasting sessions and jiving to Bollywood-inspired music.. Our Social Clubs ensure attendees are: connected to others through conversation and activity.

One Sunday afternoon a month a volunteer driver will collect one or two older guests and take them to a host’s house for tea, cake, sandwiches and most importantly lots of chatter!
