Air Force Museum

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand is the national museum for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and New Zealand military aviation, and stands on the site of the former air base at 45 Harvard Avenue in Wigram. There is loads to see and do, including a Helicopter Fun Day for kids on 21 July. It’s open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm. airforcemuseum.co.nz

BOTANIC GARDENS

From the spectacular summer roses to the cosy conservatories, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens is a delightful spot to visit at any time of the year. July is an especially good time to visit if you’re a fan of orchids.

There’s a cafe and visitor centre on site too, so you can enjoy a bite to eat and a hot drink. ccc.govt.nz/parks-and-gardens

CARDBOARD CATHEDRAL

The Cardboard Cathedral, on the corner of Madras and Hereford streets, was built after Christchurch’s original Anglican cathedral was badly damaged in the 2011

“The Christchurch Botanic Gardens is a delightful spot to visit at any time of the year” earthquake. It is the only one of its kind in the world. Visitors can join a tour with a guide who will show you through and answer questions (there’s a $5 fee). Tours operate from Monday to Saturday. And for something to remember your visit by, the gift shop has a range of cathedral-related souvenirs.

DISPENSE ESPRESSO

Nestled in the busy business hub at 1005 Ferry Road, Woolston, Dispense Espresso cafe isn’t visible from the street, and its discreet signs don’t immediately catch your eye. But it’s worth hunting out. This cool cafe is well known for its delicious baked goods. Tempt yourself with a glazed blueberry donut, polenta marmalade cake, or a chocolate pear tart – all baked on site.

Or for lunch, choose from the dine-in menu. And, of course, the coffee is excellent.

For a cheap and easy way to get around the city, hire an e-bike or e-scooter. There are two providers in Christchurch – Lime and Flamingo – with 1600 e-scooters and 200 e-bikes for public use. FERRYMEAD HERITAGE PARK

Go back in time with a visit to Ferrymead.

The park features an early 1900s Edwardian township with a variety of restored cottages, a schoolhouse, church and businesses that reflect the period. Visitors can experience what life was like for early residents, including the smell of a coal range and the sounds of a tram rattling past the door.

A large array of heritage exhibitions and displays are open for viewing, particularly on Sundays. You can also ride the tram at weekends and during school holidays. ferrymead.org.nz.

Take in the spectacular 360-degree city views while you enjoy a gondola ride up the Port Hills. The vistas span the snow-capped Southern Alps, sprawling Canterbury Plains and waters of Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean. When you reach the top, stretch your legs on one of the walking tracks, visit the Summit Station and learn about local history on the Time Tunnel ride (entry is free with your gondola ticket), or find a souvenir at the gift shop. Lyttelton has a long and fascinating history, with Christchurch’s first European settlers landing here in 1850. ORANA WILDLIFE PARK

Located 15 minutes’ drive from Christchurch Airport, Orana Wildlife Park spans 80 hectares and is internationally renowned for its zoo-based breeding programmes for endangered exotic and native species.

SKIING

Christchurch has several excellent ski fields nearby. The closest is the Porters Ski Area in Springfield (State Highway 73), which caters for all abilities in skiing and snowboarding. For those who’ve never skied before, there’s a designated learners’ area. Further on, Mt Hutt is about 90 minutes’ drive and boasts the longest ski season in New Zealand.

TRAMS

For newcomers to Christchurch, a tram ride is a great opportunity to see some of the inner-city attractions, and learn a little about the region’s history. The Canterbury Museum, Botanic Gardens, The Terrace, Riverside Market, Margaret Mahy Playground and New Regent Street are just some of the sights along the route. The tram runs from 10am to 4pm in winter, and 9am to 5pm in summer. You can hop on and off at any of the 17 stops along the way. The Austin Club is a very cool basement cocktail bar built within a disused underground station. The low-ceilinged, 50-person capacity space between Cashel and High streets was designed to replicate post-war parties held in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with a jazz/swing/blues house band and old-school, varnished timber on the bars, stools and cladding. 7 TIPS ON BUYING AN RV It’s easy to make costly mistakes when you buy a new or used vehicle.

Here are a few tips on getting it right.

When it comes to spending your hardearned cash on the RV (recreational vehicle) of your dreams, it pays to do your homework. Many is the tale of woe from a first-time buyer who failed to read the fine print; remained blissfully unaware of government regulations; or found out too late why that incredible bargain buy wasn’t a bargain at all.

Before you buy a lemon, take your time and run through our handy checklist.

1. MOTORHOME, CARAVAN, OR CAMPER?

The first question you’ll need to answer is around what type of RV is right for you.

A motorhome will suit those whose preference is for a combination vehicle and mobile home; the freedom camper; a person who values maximum manoeuvrability in campgrounds, and anyone who wants to set up camp with minimum fuss. The downside is that motorhomes – by virtue of their size – can be difficult to park in urban areas.

Caravans can go most places a motorhome can go; and they can also be used for freedom camping providing the driver is competent towing and at getting in and out of awkward places. You will of course need a suitable tow vehicle and set up time is usually a little longer than with a motorhome and less convenient when it’s raining. However, once camp is set up, the tow vehicle is free for jaunts without the need to unhook power and pack everything away.

Camper trailers are not as popular in New Zealand as across the Tasman and overseas, although this is changing slowly, as purchasers weigh up the value for money, easy set up and off-road capacity of these compact vehicles.

2. KNOW YOUR TOW

Matching your tow vehicle to your caravan or trailer is of high importance. Get it wrong and the result could be disastrous.

Check laden and un-laden weights carefully

and ask the manufacturer which tow vehicle they recommend; or go online and read suitable vehicle tests. Ask if electronic stability and anti-sway devices have been installed.

3. MAKE A WISH LIST

Make your dreams come true by creating a careful list of all the features you need and those you want. Do you need a good-sized shower and internal toilet, or would an amenity tent with camping shower work and afford more room and a better internal layout? Work through every detail thoroughly – size of table needed, size of beds. How many beds? Think about comfort and privacy. Will you be entertaining friends? How much internal seating will you need? How big is the galley? Do you need a large fridge/freezer, or will an additional chilly bin do? What about storage, space for your toys, roofracks or bike racks?

4. FUTURE-PROOF YOUR VEHICLE

Right now, your RV might suit you to the ground, but what about further down the track? Will you need larger fresh and grey water tanks, more beds, a better bathroom, an additional awning, solar panels, a more advanced electronics package or a larger generator? What new features can be added as time and money permit? What about a tow-ball, bike racks and larger gas bottles?

5. READ THE FINE PRINT

What – exactly - does the warranty cover you for? What modifications does the manufacturer specify can be made (and by whom) without making the warranty null and void? Does the vehicle come with a comprehensive service record? Are gas and electrical certifications up to date, and have you been given the paperwork as a record?

Can the warranty be transferred?

6. DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Read reviews (we’ve got lots online at nzmcd.co.nz) look at online forums, join specialist clubs and ask current or previous owners. If you have an RV centre nearby, pop in for a chat about what to look for, and ask which vehicles come in most frequently,

or need costly repairs. Most specialists are only too happy to offer impartial opinions, especially if they are likely to be asked to provide pre-buy checks, service or parts down the line. Always buy from a reputable dealer.

7. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

When you’ve narrowed down your choice of vehicles; see if it possible to spend even a small amount of time - preferably overnighting in it - so you can get a real feel for how it will suit your needs. 
