Some contractors ask you to sign over your insurance claim. Contractors may tell you it’s less hassle for them to handle the claim, or that they have experience dealing with this type of claim in the past.

That could be true – or it could be a scam.

Some contractors prey on homeowners in their weakest points. Most contractors are legitimate, hardworking professionals dedicated to expediting your claim, but there are still plenty of contractor scams.

Today, we’re explaining some of the signs you’re dealing with an insurance contractor scam: Poor Craftsmanship and Bad Repairs: Is the contractor doing a poor job of fixing your property? Does the contractor seem clueless when you ask questions? Is the contractor quickly repairing your property to pre-loss condition just to make a quick buck? These are all signs you’re dealing with an insurance contractor scam.

Poor Communication: Some contractors disappear after you sign over your claim.

You might sign the claim over to the contractor. The contractor tells the insurer they’ve completed the job. Then, the contractor takes the money and leaves town.

Limited Transparency: Ask the contractor for their license number, insurance information, and other qualifications. All reputable contractors will readily provide this information. If the contractor has limited transparency regarding its business or coverage, it’s a red flag.

Lack of Scheduling or Written Estimates: Reputable contractors are happy to provide detailed, written estimates upon request.
