A Message from the Board of Trustees Chair

While growing up, many of you may remember one of the most famous of Aesop’s Fables – the story of “The Tortoise and the Hare.” Both the tortoise and the hare were given the same task – to finish the race. One character allowed distractions to keep him from winning the race and thought his speed was his number one asset while the other character was focused on the goal – finishing the race.

The moral of the story is that speed alone does not always win the race; sometimes “steady as she goes” is a better strategy to success. I believe this same strategy can be applied to Claflin University’s Capital Campaign. Our students, faculty, staff, alumni, partners and friends stayed the course, remained focused on the goal, and helped Claflin to win the race – the completion of a historic Capital Campaign.

About the Capital Campaign

The “Imagine the Possibilities” Campaign was the most ambitious fundraising initiative in Claflin University’s history.

The public phase of this Campaign was launched in 2011 when President Henry N. Tisdale and the Board of Trustees announced the goal of $96.4 million, believing that the Campaign’s success would reposition Claflin as

one of the top teaching and research institutions in the nation. Dr. Tisdale recognized the monumental challenge of achieving the goal of raising more than $96.4 million, especially with an economy that was rebounding from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

However, Dr. Tisdale was undeterred and he remained confident that Claflin’s growing reputation as one of the top liberal arts universities in the Southeast and its national rankings in several widely-respected publications would inspire stakeholders to support the Campaign. When Claflin announced in March 2015 that it had exceeded the goal of $96.4 million, and raised $98 million, it was

confirmed that the Board of Trustees, alumni, and other supporters shared Tisdale’s vision for Claflin University’s future. He was also certain that the positive momentum from exceeding the initial goal could serve as a catalyst for maximizing Claflin’s fundraising potential. This led to Tisdale recommending that the Campaign goal be increased to $100 million—and the Board —which had 100 percent participation throughout the Campaign—wholeheartedly agreed.

In addition to the support of the Board of Trustees, which donated nearly $6 million, other external support groups such as the Board of Visitors, alumni, faculty, staff, students and parents—Claflin’s “inner 8

family”—had combined gifts totaling $17 million.

The corporate community and foundations also contributed to the Campaign’s success as Claflin received 15 gifts of $1 million or greater. Sodexo’s gift of $4.35 million was the largest single donation in the University’s history and renowned financier and philanthropist Ms. Darla Moore donated $1 million to the Department of Music. The Osher Foundation provided a gift of $1 million to fund scholarships for adult learners at Claflin and the late Jonas T. Kennedy, a long-time supporter of Claflin, also donated gifts of more than $1 million.

community a collegial environment that is consistent with its affiliation with The United Methodist Church and John Wesley’s vision of creating principled Christian leaders who transform the church and world. The United Methodist Church gave approximately $13 million through its General Board of Higher Education Ministry, the Black College Fund and the South Carolina Annual Conference to support the Capital Campaign.

The impact of the Campaign resonates beyond the walls of Claflin and provides funding that will have economic, social and cultural implications for Orangeburg County, the state of South Carolina, the nation, and the world.

Claflin University is profoundly grateful for the generosity and support of donors who recognized that the

success of the “Imagine the Possibilities” Campaign would symbolize the University’s transformational trajectory towards recognition as a leading 21st Century institution of higher education that produces diverse and globally engaged visionary leaders.

Claflin University’s music education program is ranked 10th on College Magazine’s “10 Cutting Edge College Music Education Programs” list. The list commends the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree program and its comprehensive coursework, clinical experience and world-renowned faculty for preparing the next generation of professional musicians and educators.

Claflin is the only historically black college/ university (HBCU) listed in the ranking. The Claflin University Department of Music has been an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 2004, and its degree requirements are in accordance with the latest published regulations of that association. The Music Education Program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

laflin University’s rigorous academic programs, its world-class faculty and reputation for addressing critical issues through research has earned the University a place among the nation’s most respected liberal arts universities.

Resources from the Capital Campaign have strengthened Claflin’s capacity and its resolve to continue to graduate students who will become tomorrow’s engaged visionary leaders with global perspectives. Previously, Claflin’s prestige on the landscape of higher education was largely attributed to the quality of its cross-discipline, holistic, liberal arts programs.

by HBCU Digest and the University has been ranked among the nation’s top colleges and universities by U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly, Forbes. com. and several other highly-reputable print and digital publications.

The success of the Capital Campaign led to the development of new programs, the construction and restoration of classrooms and laboratories and the implementation of innovative initiatives that supported Claflin’s academic mission.

Nearly $9.2 million has gone to strengthen academic programs by way of much-needed technology upgrades both in the classroom and throughout the campus. Claflin’s wireless access and smart classrooms campus-wide make its learning and living environment second-to-none. The University has also joined Internet2, providing its faculty and students the opportunity to connect and share research with major institutions, government entities and industry officials around the world.

The crown jewels among those projects were the construction of the Molecular Science Research Center (MSRC) and the James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel.

The James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel is a testimony to Claflin’s history of fostering spirituality on the campus by providing a place for worship, celebration and other religious life programs.

In 2009, the MSRC was designated a core research facility for the state of South Carolina by the South Carolina Research Authority and it houses a 700 megahertz NMR – nuclear magnetic resonance. At that time, it was the only one of its kind in the state of South Carolina.

The MSRC is divided into two sections including fully operational labs and classrooms where Claflin students can study the field of forensic science.

Claflin has eagerly embraced opportunities to transform and revitalize its academic programs by integrating technology and new modes of delivery to meet the needs of students in the 21st Century. When Claflin Online was launched in 2013, it signaled that traditional teaching and learning was in transition.

It was a natural progression that Claflin would offer access to its nationally-recognized programs—without the restrictions of time or location—to all students. And, in 2016, Claflin was approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) which allows Claflin to recruit and market its online programs in states outside of South Carolina. The agreement has helped to re-position Claflin in the global marketplace of higher education.

Dr. Omar Bagasra is a professor of biology and director of the South Carolina Center for Biotechnology at Claflin University. His numerous research projects include study of molecular pathogenesis of the Zika virus. He has published articles describing how the Zika virus causes microcephaly.

The start of the RN (Registered Nurse) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the Fall of 2016 represents another seminal achievement during the Campaign as the University became the only HBCU in the state of South Carolina to offer a bachelors degree in nursing.

The Master of Education degree program was also established during the Campaign. This program addresses the need for leadership in the area of education. Additionally, it furthers the University’s research agenda and attracts myriad partnerships with local, regional and national agencies.

Claflin’s global initiatives were supported by the Campaign as students took advantage of international learning experiences through study abroad programs.

The University established exchange programs and research collaborations with several international institutions including India—Amity University, School of Management Sciences, and University of Madras; Costa Rica—University

for Peace; and Brazil—Universidad Metodista de São Paulo.

The faculty, which averaged more than $10 million a year in funded grants over the last five years, includes several Governor’s Professor of the Year awardees, leaders in discipline-specific organizations and winners of major awards for teaching and research, such as the White House Millennium Professor of the Year, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, UNCF/Mellon Fellowship and many more.

The University’s faculty in Natural Sciences and Mathematics has been engaged in research including Zika virus, autism, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and other health disparities as well as alternative fuel.

Among the investigations by the School of Education were preparing English Language Learners (ELL) teaching in K-12; critical literacy, and Black male teachers in K-12 education. The School of Business’s scholarly inquiries included subjects such as eco-friendly businesses; climate change; the effectiveness of accounting information systems in education and organizational behavior and development.

Over the past two years the University has experienced an increase in student-faculty mentored research of more than 40 percent; an increase in peer-reviewed research publications of 20 percent; and an increase in student conference presentations of 25 percent.

History was made in 2017 as Claflin celebrated its inaugural graduates of the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and the Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction programs. Also, 10 graduating seniors achieved cumulative 4.0 grade point averages. These students, referred to as “The Talented 10,” were presented Presidential Academic Excellence Awards. Enhancing Facilities

hen students are selecting a university, one of the major influencers is the quality of its campus facilities. What are the needs of students as they relate to creating living and learning environments that will aide in holistic learning? What are the needs of the students as they relate to residential halls? What technological enhancements have been made? These and other questions were considered when research began in 1996 to establish a road map for facilities enhancement at Claflin University.

to stay on-campus during their collegiate experience want to utilize spaces that make them feel “right at home.” Parents want to know that their children are comfortable—just like they would be in their own homes. Claflin University has eight residential facilities on campus that are the students’ “home away from home.”

The Capital Campaign supported a refreshing and refurbishing of several residential halls for both women and men.

On the women’s side, Asbury Hall, Corson Hall and Dunton Hall underwent a thorough overhaul, creating a friendlier and more enhanced environment for living and learning. On the men’s ledger, High Rise saw a replacement of the front windows and curtain wall system.

Additionally, a new heating and cooling system was installed and the lobby was renovated to feature pow-

ing included installation of a new roof, HVAC system improvements, repairs to the rooftop greenhouse and electrical system, and renovated laboratory space.

Claflinites of earlier years will remember that the site of the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center is the former site of the T. Willard Lewis Chapel. Current Claflinites appreciate the Fine Arts Center for its spacious auditorium utilized for concerts, recitals, assemblies, and theatrical performances. Renovations to the Center included roof replacements, auditorium stage upgrade, replacement seating, painting and sound system upgrade, and office/classroom repairs. Upgrades to the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center in 2004 complement the new expansion of the Music Center.

These enhancements to residential halls, including state-ofthe art fittings for bathrooms and plumbing, clearly demonstrated that the University places a high priority on student well-being in all phases of the Claflin experience.

To support the growing demands of rapidly emerging technology, the University’s entire technology framework was overhauled. New fiber optic cables were installed in all of the campus buildings, every computer on campus was upgraded, and servers were increased from six to a total of 36.

The new Health and Wellness Complex

The success of the Campaign was also an opportunity for Claflin University to channel its focus on community engagement into what President Henry N. Tisdale described as “A New Gateway” to South Carolina’s oldest historically black college/ university (HBCU). Claflin has begun construction of its new Health and Wellness Complex—a dynamic, multi-purpose facility that will provide benefits for the campus community and area residents beyond the walls of the University. The facility is scheduled to open during the fall of 2018.

“The Health and Wellness Complex is tangible evidence of our commitment to serve our students and provide the best environment for their success as future, boldly engaged visionary leaders,” Tisdale said. “The mission of the Health and Wellness Complex is to provide a means for the Claflin community and the Orangeburg community to gain healthier lives.”

The Health and Wellness Complex is a 31,000 squarefoot facility that will expand and renovate the existing Jonas Kennedy Center. The complex will provide holistic health, nutrition, and life-long wellness education to the campus community and local residents. The ultra-modern facility will include an auxiliary gym, fitness center, demonstration kitchen, walking track, office space, classrooms, and a farmer’s market with locally-sourced foods.

The project has received funding from a variety of sources including the Capital Campaign, Orangeburg County, The United Methodist Church, Sodexo, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, AFLAC, U.S. Department of Agriculture and other donors.

The design provides a gateway to the University along Magnolia Street and features an outdoor fitness area and a farmer’s market/park. With the creation of a planted bioswale, this solution will provide a contemporary example of sustainable stormwater management for students preparing to be visionaries in the world of biology and environmental sciences.

The Henry N. Tisdale and Alice Carson Tisdale Endowed Professorship in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was an unprecedented demonstration of the couple’s steadfast support for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs and their fervent commitment to preparing students for the 21st Century workforce. The endowed professorship was created to bolster the success of African Americans in STEM. It also helps Claflin assemble a world-class faculty that shares Tisdale’s perspective regarding the importance of research and utilizing technology in classroom.

This prestigious endowed professorship will allow Claflin to recruiting and retain topranked senior scientists to serve on the faculty.

The growth of the endowment invigorated faculty development and provided the University with resources to purchase new books and collections for the library, complete campus construction projects.

Endowed student scholarships were equally important during the Campaign.

The total number of endowed scholarships also doubled which allowed Claflin to recruit more high-achieving high school scholars and improve student retention. Claflin enrolled 550 new students—a school record—for the Fall 2016 semester. Claflin welcomed more than 500 freshmen during the Fall 2017 semester as enrollment climbed to more than 2,100 students.

The Abney Scholarship provides support for students from Anderson, Greenwood, Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. The Darla Moore Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in music and the Osher scholarship supports for non-traditional students in the Professional and Continuing Studies Program who are returning to school to earn degrees.

This scholarship is for individuals who have experienced an interruption in their education of five or more years who want to resume their education at the undergraduate level.

and Continuing Studies. Tucker was extremely impressed with the information presented and decided it was time that she finished what she had started years ago. While living in Georgia, Tucker attended the Georgia Military College; however, she never completed the program.

Tucker is an inspiring 55 yearold wife and mother. She and her

husband, Lakeith, have 12 children and of the 12, eight are adopted. “I always wanted to be a role model to my children and completing college is one way to show them that you are never too old to accomplish your dreams and goals in life,” she said. Tucker works at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
