PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It is a tremendous pleasure to honor those who have generously contributed to Claflin University in the past year. Because of donors like you, Claflin continues to affirm the University's growing reputation among the nation's premiere liberal arts colleges and universities.

The 2015-2016 Honor Roll of Donors is our way to acknowledge and express appreciation publicly to all constituents who have invested in the present and future growth of Claflin University. As you read the pages of this publication, you will see the best examples of how our commitment to creating visionary leaders positively impacts the campus, community and the world.

This is an exciting time for Claflin University! The University was named HBCU of the Year by HBCU Digest and the Claflin University International Alumni Association was selected the magazine's Alumni Association of the Year. U.S. News and World Report ranked Claflin No. 1 in alumni giving percentage.

The University's alumni giving percentage reached 50 percent last year which ranks among the leaders at all colleges and universities. U.S. News has consistently ranked Claflin as one of “America’s Best Colleges” for the past 17 years. The publication has also ranked the University a top tier national liberal arts college Washington Monthly ranked Claflin the number-one liberal arts college in South Carolina and the top HBCU in the nation in its 2015 annual College Guide.

The University is nearing the successful culmination of the Imagine the Possibilities Capital Campaign -- the most ambitious fundraising initiative in Claflin's 147-year history. Your support has enabled us to exceed our initial goal of $96.4 million and we are pleased to announce that the Campaign has raised more than $100 million!

graduate degree programs Tcheno Snell was one of six members of the Claflin Class of 2016 who also were inaugural graduates of Claflin Online, which launched in the summer of 2014. Snell, a sociology/criminal justice administration major, lives in Charlotte, N.C. He received of the Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship which helps nontraditional students return to college to complete their classes to earn undergraduate degrees.

The Leadership Giving program recognizes, honors and encourages donors to make gifts of $1,000 or more. The annual Leadership Luncheon is held in November during Homecoming to acknowledge donors and their gifts at the Leadership Level. More than 200 donors contributed $2,443,547 in leadership gifts in 2015. Claflin University Receives $1.2 Million Grant to Transform Learning in Higher Education When Claflin University President Henry N. Tisdale and leaders of other historically black colleges and universities met with officials of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation nearly two years ago, they were encouraged to identify ways to transform higher education. Claflin, recognized as one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, readily accepted the challenge to ensure access and success for its 1,950 students, many of whom are first generation and come from low income backgrounds. Hence, they tend to struggle during their first year of college due to academic challenges, financial and personal support challenges, as well as inflexible learning systems.

With Claflin’s determination and laser-sharp focus on student success, the university is one of up to 30 Gates Foundation Institutional Partners nationwide, and a recipient of a $1.2 million grant over 4.5 years to enhance student learning, accelerate student credentials, maintain access and close the equity gap.

This collaboration focuses on the overarching goal of seeing underrepresented and underprepared students graduate at higher rates with high-quality credentials at affordable prices. The recent award to Claflin follows a $75,000 grant in 2014 from the “HBCUs Pursuing Transformative Change Initiative,” which challenges institutions to develop transformative changes that will ensure student access and success at institutions in the 21st century.

Dr. Angela W. Peters, vice provost for academic programs at Claflin, said collaborative outreach with other HBCUs and 74 comprehensive research institutions has been essential as Claflin explores ways to implement its goals and objectives through several critical “interventions” that include advising, digital learning and courseware, and developmental educational and pathways.

“We take students wherever they are so that they can get to where they need to be above and beyond,” said Peters. “Our mission enables us to reach out and touch and have a personal feel.

Claflin also seeks to expand access to education through accelerated degree and online programs. When exploring ways to increase its academic reach while easing students’ financial concerns, Claflin studied other universities with recognized innovative accelerated programs. Since then, Claflin has

implemented several digital learning initiatives such as online general education courses and fully online bachelor’s degree programs in organizational management and criminal justice, and master’s degree programs in business (MBA) and education (M.Ed.).

In addition to reducing student debt loads, such programs enable students to more quickly complete their coursework and graduate through three-year bachelor’s programs and four-year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The university is also considering offering certificate programs.

“We’re an institution of teaching and learning,” said Peters.

“We welcome diversity and inclusiveness with a focus on globalization. We want to offer our students the best access to other languages, cultures, post-graduate opportunities and the skill sets to be employed”

Jalen Thompson was a standout member of the Claflin baseball team that captured the program's first-ever Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship and its inaugural berth to the NCAA Division II Regional Playoffs. Thompson, who earned a bachelor's degree in biology, was a Presidential Scholar. He was president of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society at Claflin which comprises student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport and maintain a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA through their junior to senior year. Thompson also was enrolled in the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College.

Claflin University Receives $100,000 from UNCF’s Career Pathways Initiative Planning Grant Claflin University has been awarded a $100,000 planning grant from UNCF’s (United Negro College Fund) Career Pathways Initiative (CPI), funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. The planning grant enables Claflin to submit a proposal for a much larger award.

A winning proposal would have far-reaching implications for the University. It would build upon the University’s history of offering strong academic programs in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and non-STEM disciplines, ongoing initiatives targeting credentials, and strategic partnerships with industries that secure high-paying jobs for graduates.

“Our selection is also consistent with Claflin’s mission of producing visionary leaders.”

The initial proposal process was highly competitive and the CPI panel of experts identified a number of significant opportunities within Claflin University’s proposal. As a recipient of these funds, Claflin will join 29 other institutions eager to explore how institutions can intentionally develop career pathways to improve employment outcomes in the 21st century.

“UNCF is elated to invest in better futures for tens of thousands of students at these selected institutions; students who will become the nation’s future engineers, educators, and entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF president and CEO. “This was an incredibly rigorous and competitive process. We applaud all the institutions who put their best foot forward in the interest of their students’ future careers, and we commend the 30 institutions that were selected for planning grants.”

Lilly Endowment committed $50 million last October to launch the UNCF Career Pathways Initiative, to improve the job placement outcomes of graduates from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and predominately black institutions (PBIs). Institutions will employ various strategies to achieve this goal, including aligning curricula with local and national workforce needs, developing intentional career pathway options for students across their collegiate experience, and strengthening their career service operations.

Claflin University to Launch Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program in 2016 Fall Semester Claflin University’s growing reputation as a leading 21st century institution of higher education reached a historic milestone when the University received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to launch its Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program during the 2016 Fall semester. Claflin is the only HBCU (Historically Black College/University) in the state of South Carolina to offer a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The announcement also represents the dynamic progression of Claflin’s increasing emphasis in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and online programs, while maintaining its distinction as a top-tier liberal arts university.

“The RN to BSN program is consistent with Claflin being the recipient of the UNCF’s Career Pathways Initiative funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. and our ability to develop and sustain careerfocused academic degree programs,” said Claflin President Henry N. Tisdale. “We see this as a tremendous opportunity for Claflin to contribute to the workforce by producing visionary leaders in nursing and other professions within the healthcare industry.”

Claflin’s RN to BSN program is a hybrid or blended program that offers rigorous online and on-campus courses. The program is open only to Registered Nurses who have earned an associate degree in nursing from an accredited institution. A partnerships with neighboring Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College and Regional Hospital of Orangeburg are a pipeline for nursing graduates who can earn their bachelor’s degree at Claflin in less than 18 months.

Smith is the director of the program, which launched in the 2016 Fall semester. Many of the students were awarded scholarships and grants from Bank of America, Bernard Osher Foundation and the Inaugural Scholarship for Nursing. Claflin is the only historically black college/university (HBCU) in the state of South Carolina that offers a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Reverend Charles Johnson, Isaac Templeton and Reverend Middleton Whittaker, vice president for institutional advancement, during presentation to the Lambda Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi which in 1988 donated more than $140,000 to establish an endowed scholarship. All students are eligible to apply for the scholarship which is awarded based on need. The Endowed Scholarship is the largest among Claflin’s Greek-letter organizations.

Claflin University’s leadership in alumni giving was largely responsible for AARP/HBCU Digest naming the Claflin University International Alumni Association (CUIAA) the 2015-16 Alumni Association of the Year. The U.S. News and World Report Short List ranked Claflin No.1 among all HBCUs with a 48.9 percent alumni giving rate that reached 50 percent before the end of the year.

Claflin achieved a historic plateau in 2013 with its 52.2 percent alumni giving rate. The University ranks among the leaders at all colleges and universities in this category.
