About the Program Each year, the Office of Alumni Relations recognizes outstanding alumni graduates under the age of 40 who are bold and energetic leaders in their professions and their communities. The honorees have made continuous contributions to their chosen profession, and have inspired, empowered, and embraced their communities. Outstanding Leaders Under 40

Lt. Albert Black

Lieutenant Albert Black earned his bachelor’s degree from Claflin University in 2007. The Brooklyn, New York, native currently serves as a lieutenant with The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety in Orangeburg, S.C. His responsibilities include supervising, training, and guiding subordinate staff in performing their duties, leading shift briefings, and performance evaluations. Since a young age, Black has been driven by a strong desire to serve his community, firmly believing that service can lead to a significant positive impact. He is dedicated to being a positive influence in the community and working towards altering the negative perception of law enforcement in urban areas. Throughout his career with Orangeburg Public Safety, Black

has contributed to solving more than 150 cases, earning numerous awards and recognition for his unwavering commitment to serving all individuals in his community and the surrounding areas. He also leverages his position to mentor adolescents in the Orangeburg area, emphasizing the importance of building positive and healthy community relationships with future leaders to foster unity and mutual understanding between the community and those who serve it. Albert is a Rotarian (Orangeburg Morning) and an active member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, S.C. He serves as a deacon, an officer with the Brotherhood Ministry, and leads the Media Ministry. Black and his wife Amanda have one son, Austin.

Dr. Tiffany Tiara Brown

’03 Dr. Tiffany Tiara Brown has had an impressive educational and professional journey, starting from Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia, to graduating summa cum laude from Claflin University. She attended medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which led to working as an emergency medicine physician at Springfield Regional Medical Center in Springfield, Ohio. Brown has received numerous awards and recognitions for her commitment and contributions in emergency medicine and her involvement with various committees, including the 2017 Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year. Brown is chair of the Physicians Wellness Committee for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. She is also a dedicated mother to her two sons, Ashton and Aiden Johnson, who she considers her “pride and joy.”

Jo Cabey

’12 Jo Cabey, a native of the Caribbean Island of Montserrat, is a first-generation American citizen. She is proud to call the Bronx, New York, her home. Cabey earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Claflin University and a Masters in the Art of Elementary Teaching. She is a math instructional coach for students in grades Pre-K through 5 and an adjunct professor of elementary education. Cabey will continue her education in the prestigious Summer Principals Academy at Columbia University, where she will pursue a Master of Education in Public School Building Leadership. In addition to her academic career, Cabey is a prolific author with two self-published books. "Jada's Diary: From Growing Pains to Found Promise" is a work of fiction inspired by her own life. "Attitude of Gratitude: 90 Days to Win at Being Grateful" is a journal that encourages daily reflection on gratitude.

In her leisure time, Cabey's passions extend to outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and the culinary arts. She cherishes moments spent with her family and friends and has a penchant for live concerts and Broadway shows. Her adventurous spirit has led her to explore more than 40 countries, making her an experienced globetrotter. Cabey's online presence, initially rooted in her travel blog, "Journey With Jo," has blossomed into Journey With Jo LLC, a platform through which she assists aspiring authors in navigating selfpublishing. Cabey serves as a member of the Speakers Bureau with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and volunteers as a high school mentor for seniors preparing for college through her involvement with Sadie Nash. Her vision is to continue inspiring individuals to surmount life's obstacles, expand her literary repertoire, and ultimately establish and manage her elementary school.

Trimease K. Carter

’07 In 2022, Trimease Carter became a program officer at Central Carolina Community Foundation, where she manages grantmaking for nonprofits. She has a grant portfolio of over $1M and has led multiple teams with diverse constituents, including donors, nonprofit representatives, community volunteers, staff, and board members. She is the chair of Together South Carolina’s Black Nonprofit Leaders Group, and this fall, she will be one of 32 leaders to join the Philanthropy Southeast 2023-2024 Hull Fellows Class. Before joining CCCF, Carter was the Youth Relations and Organizational Equity Manager at Wholespire for 10 years. She oversaw the

creation and implementation of the Healthy Young People Empowerment (HYPE) Project and led the organization’s Race Equity and Inclusion efforts. Carter has always wanted to help improve communities, and other past roles include Community Education Assistant at Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands and Project Coordinator for the Building Dreams Mentoring Program. Carter is a licensed master social worker with a master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Claflin University. Carter enjoys reading in her free time.

Yevedzo Chitiga

’06 Yevedzo Chitiga is a wife, mom, attorney, public speaker, and author. She is senior product counsel at Brex, a B2B financial technology company revolutionizing corporate cards. Additionally, Chitiga founded Philisa Creatives, a media company dedicated to celebrating and amplifying African heritage. Recently, she achieved the milestone of publishing her debut book, "My First Book of Shona and Ndebele Words."

Shadia M. Combs, Esq.

’14 Shadia M. Combs, Esq. is an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Jennifer J. Riley, where she practices Family Law. Combs has previously worked as an assistant city solicitor in the Tort Litigation Unit and for the non-profit Philadelphia Legal Assistance as a staff attorney. Combs served as a law clerk to the Honorable Cateria R. McCabe, Common Pleas Court of Philadelphia Family Division Dependency Branch, and the Honorable Sierra Thomas-Street in the Court of Common Pleas Criminal Division. While in law school, Combs was committed to public service and interned for Villanova University's Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation. She also worked for the Child Advocacy Unit at The Defender Association of Philadelphia. In both capacities, Combs helped advocate for those in vulnerable situations.

Combs proudly serves as the second vice president of the Quaker City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and is a member of The Barristers' Association of Philadelphia. Combs graduated cum laude at Claflin University and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2014. She earned her Juris Doctor in 2017 from the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. Combs is a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. One of her favorite quotes is from 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai: "When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful."

Bernita C. Cooper

’12 Bernita C. Cooper’s interest in storytelling, a love for reading, and growing up in the social media age led her to pursue a career in public relations and social media. After graduating from Claflin University with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and a master’s degree from George Washington University, the Hemingway, S.C. native spearheaded social media campaigns and initiatives at Historically Black Colleges/ Universities (HBCUs) in South Carolina and North Carolina. Cooper also served as an adjunct Public Relations professor, hoping to inspire the next generation of communicators. Looking to explore paths outside of higher education, Cooper works at the ColorComm Corporation Headquarters in New York City as the

Senior Communications Manager. ColorComm, Inc. is the nation’s leading women’s platform addressing diversity & inclusion across the communications, marketing, advertising, and media industries. In addition to her full-time career, Cooper owns and operates Bernita Cooper Communications, a full-service social media and public relations company she founded as a sophomore at Claflin. Cooper is a legacy member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a host team member for Dîner en Blanc Columbia, and a founding member of the EmpowerHer Orangeburg Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA).

Randy Dendy

’06 Randy Dendy holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Claflin University and an educational specialist degree in educational leadership from Furman University. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Clemson University. Beginning his career as a 4th and 5th-grade teacher in Laurens School District 55, he taught diverse classes, including single-gender, departmentalized math and science, looping, and traditional classes. His exceptional teaching led to his recognition as Laurens Elementary Teacher of the Year and Laurens School District 55 District Teacher of the Year. In 2012, he transitioned to Spartanburg School District 7 as a reading coach and received the Teacher of the Year award at Mary H. Wright Elementary. In 2014, Dendy became the assistant principal at Mary H. Wright Elementary School, where his leadership drove academic improvements and reduced behavioral referrals. He continued his ascent in 2016 when named Principal of Laurens Elementary, maintaining an above-average

school rating and avoiding inclusion in the Underperforming Subgroup list for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition to his educational roles, Dendy served as an adjunct professor at Furman University and was a prominent guest panelist at national conferences, notably a conference on rural school leadership at Virginia Tech University. His accomplishments include special recognitions for Measures of Academic Progress scores, South Carolina Palmetto Assessment of State Standards scores, and the Call Me MiSTER Trailblazer Award. In 2020, Dendy assumed the role of Chief Academic Officer at Legacy Early College in Greenville, overseeing principals, faculty, and staff members. With over 15 years of experience in administration, coaching, and teaching, he excels in assessing students' needs, supporting their learning for exams, and adeptly managing budgets and human resources. Randy cherishes time with his wife and three daughters, bonding over their love for travel, reading, and daily devotionals. 15

Dr. Samantha DeLoache

’03 Dr. Samantha DeLoache, a native of Orangeburg, S.C., is a May 2003 honors graduate of Claflin University with a Bachelor of Science in biology. In May 2007, she graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Master of Business Administration from the Citadel Military College. She is a pharmacist manager at Kintegra Family Health Pharmacy in Gastonia, N.C. DeLoache worked as a pharmacist for 16 years. She is also a full-time entrepreneur with a t-shirt, apparel line (www.shopwithsamanthad.com), and coaching businesses.

DeLoache resides in Charlotte, N.C., and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. DeLoache enjoys modeling, traveling, reading books, motivational speaking, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. She was most recently honored as one of the many great leaders in Who's Who in Black Charlotte for 2023. She has been modeling for over 10 years, and in 2020, she created her LLC and U.S. Trademark entitled Modeling Pharmacist. Jay Dukes

’10 Jay Dukes, class of 2010, is a comedic host and entrepreneur from Spartanburg, S.C. He began working in the entertainment industry as a highly requested master of ceremonies for hundreds of major collegiate events. Dukes has opened for the Legendary Patti Labelle and co-hosted Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated's 81st Grand Conclave step show with Rickey Smiley. Dukes created Jay Dukes' "Training Day," Claflin's annual "Let's Talk" Panel for the freshman class featuring notable alumni and a comedy show later that night. He is

the founder and CEO of Aux Cord Wars, LLC., one of the premiere companies for college engagement and activations for black and brown students nationwide. ACW executes 35-40 activations a semester and a minimum of 70 annually. Dukes is a loving husband to his beautiful wife and Beyond The Stage Productions business partner, LaRhonda Dukes. Trained in Improv and stand-up, with a gift of being naturally entertaining, Dukes is ready to take his talents to the big screen. He appears in the movie Couples' Night and has several other projects underway.

Makeda Shanee Escayg

’07 Makeda Escayg is a media professional residing in Florida. With nearly twenty years of experience, she has been employed at two Public Broadcast Station (PBS) affiliates, an ABC affiliate, and ESPN. She also served in academia as an Adjunct Instructor at two Florida universities. Escayg, is a graduate of Regent University (M.A., Communication, 2010) and Summa Cum Laude graduate of Claflin University (B.A., Mass Communication, 2007). Makeda was an Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College student and joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Mu Chapter. Currently, at the Home Shopping Network (a subsidiary of Qurate Retail Group), she is the

manager of sales strategy. Escayg, is also co-lead membership officer for Black Employees Leading in Inclusion, Education, Vision and Engagement, a DE&I Team Member Resource Group at the company. Escayg, has been employed and held various positions at HSN for 10 years. As a Beauty Category (TV) Producer, she was responsible for brand strategy for many beauty brands at HSN. In 2017 she received the HSN Vision Award for leadership and in 2016, Escayg became the first Black woman television production supervisor in HSN’s history of more than 40 years.

JaQuez Gilliard

’16 Born and raised in Eutawville, S.C., JaQuez Gilliard always had a heart for helping others. He is the son of Keith and Rosalyn Gilliard, the middle child of three children: one older brother (Keith), a younger sister (Tamara), and a bonus sister (Terrionna). JaQuez graduated from Orangeburg Consolidated School District Three in 2012, Claflin University in 2016, and Syracuse University in 2022. In 2017, JaQuez married his high school sweetheart, Santrelle Washington. Gilliard served as a math teacher for eight years; two at Dutchman Creek Middle in Rock Hill, SC, four at Frazer K8 in Syracuse, NY, and two at PB Ritch Middle in Hiram, GA. In Syracuse, Gilliard served as the coordinator for the

Building Men Program at Frazer K8 School, the 8th Grade Demonstration Teacher, and Lead Teacher for the Syracuse City School District. In his leadership role, Gilliard planned and recorded video lessons and conducted weekly professional development to assist every 8thgrade math teacher in the district. This led him to start his YouTube Channel “Basic Math Skills with Mister G!” Recently, Gilliard and Santrelle relocated to Hiram, Ga., where he now teaches 7th Grade Mathematics and runs his business, Dream2Go Travel Agency LLC.

Waverly Gordon

’04 Waverly Gordon serves as deputy staff director and general counsel for the Committee on Energy and Commerce for the U.S. House of Representatives. She manages efforts on various policy issues, including telecommunications, health care, climate change, and consumer protection. During the 117th Congress, the Committee led efforts that became law as part of the American Rescue Plan, the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, and the Inflation Reduction Act. Gordon also counsels members and staff on procedural, jurisdictional, and legal issues. Previously, Gordon served as health counsel for the Committee. She focused on public health issues related to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Prior to joining the Committee, she served as senior policy advisor for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and as a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Louis Stokes Urban Health Policy Fellow with the Office of Congresswoman Donna Christensen and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Originally from Simpsonville, S.C., Gordon received a Bachelor of Science from Claflin University, a Master of Health Administration from The Ohio State University, and a Juris Doctor from Duke University.

LaSharice Hall

’14 LaSharice Hall is a promising M.D. candidate, currently pursuing her medical degree at Rush Medical College in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois. Her dedication to the field of medicine is underscored by her prestigious achievement of securing a full-tuition scholarship, marking her as an outstanding and accomplished student in the realm of healthcare. With a fervent commitment to advancing the frontiers of medical knowledge, Hall has established herself as a notable researcher and presenter. Her invaluable contributions to numerous medical journals bear witness to her dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and her mission to improve healthcare practices.

Anthony Hallmon

’16 Anthony Hallmon is a native of Orangeburg, S.C. He earned his associate degree in Mortuary Science from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Services. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology from Claflin University. Hallmon’s passion for helping others and advocating for his community shows throughout his daily work. He is the Director of Community Outreach for Bamberg, LLC, and Anthony has over 14 years of experience in funeral service where he currently works with Glovers Funeral Home of Orangeburg, S.C. Hallmon is the co-owner of Garden City Consulting, LLC, a political consulting company. Through Garden City Consulting, Anthony has managed two successful campaigns that led to two young African American men being elected -- State Representative Justin Bamberg for House District 90 and Willie Aiken for Jasper County Coroner. Hallmon’s other affiliations include being an active member of the Delta Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, where

he serves as the Recording Secretary. He is also the director of community relations for the South Carolina District of Alpha Phi Alpha. Hallmon is a member of the Olive Masonic Lodge #477. He is an advisory board member for the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Technology Center Business Department (Orangeburg). Anthony is a major contributor to the Orangeburg County Democratic Party. He serves as the executive committeeman and co-chair of the annual Betty Henderson’s Candidates and Elected Officials Cook-off. Hallmon also serves on the Committee for Caucus Organization, Operations, and Bylaws for the South Carolina Democratic Party. He is a 2020 graduate of the James E. Clyburn Political Fellowship. Hallmon was recently elected to serve on the board of the Felton Laboratory Charter School. He is a member of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. Hallmon is the COO and chairman of the board for Cultivating Leaders, a mentoring organization based in Orangeburg County.

Kalina Harrison

’13 Kalina Harrison is an Atlanta native who now resides in Philadelphia, Pa. She graduated from Claflin University, where she was a member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, a television station manager for the Mass Communications department, recipient of the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas scholarship, and a proud member of the Gamma Chi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

She also partnered with another Claflinite, Tamuka Martin, to launch a virtual study abroad program connecting students from Philadelphia with counterparts in Zimbabwe to diversify each child.

Harrison is now a writer for Kreative Scribes, the company she founded in 2017.

Harrison has self-published two books and advocates for the homeless, transient community to help them secure housing and access to whole foods.

Harrison established "Write Your Way to the Bank" in 2019, a business conference for teens. She used the business acumen she obtained from Claflin to

Starlette Jean

’05 Starlette Jean, a respected Reading Interventionist in the Orangeburg County School District at Edisto Elementary School, is celebrated for her profound dedication to literacy development. A 2005 honor graduate of Claflin University, Jean is a committed lifelong learner. She holds a master's degree in professional development from Walden University and continually advances her knowledge in Educational Technology through Webster University. Jean's educational approach is comprehensive, emphasizing the incorporation of Social and Emotional Learning to help young students excel in literacy. Her expertise has led to her involvement in state department committees advocating for Early Childhood literacy and the creation of district-wide and community programs to combat illiteracy. She passionately fosters a love of reading through her "R.A.P. Time with Mrs. Jean" initiative, where she shares stories with students and families on her YouTube channel, aptly named for "Read

Alouds are Powerful." This endeavor earned her the 2022 Irene Myers Grant and the 2023 Savannah River Site (SRS) Mini-Grant Teacher Award. Jean channels her creativity to bring joy to private and corporate events as the owner and balloon stylist of Make It a B.A.S.H., LLC. As a women's empowerment speaker, she coordinates and leads women's conferences and revivals. Jean also collaborates with her husband, Hayward, in leading "The Power Cord," an organization offering Marriage Counseling, Marriage Conferences, and Marriage Retreats. Together, they co-authored their first book, The Power Cord Prayer Journal. Jean is also a co-pastor at Conforming to Christ's Image Church, where her husband serves as senior pastor. Her favorite scripture, Galatians 6:9, is a guiding reminder never to grow weary in doing good, with the promise that rewards will come in due time. Starlette, her husband, and their three children, Micah, Malachi, and Imani, live in Orangeburg.

Carena Jones

’07 Carena Jones is a graduate of Claflin University with a BA in Sociology. She obtained her MSW from the University of South Carolina and is a Licensed Master Social Worker. Jones has served as a mental health and child welfare social worker for over 13 years. Her most recent position was as a school social worker at Eau Claire High School for Richland County School District One, where she was recognized as the 2020-2021 Richland One Classified Employee of the Year.

The commissary kitchen allows her to offer a shared kitchen space with other small business owners, which aligns with her passion for giving back. Jones serves as a PRN Medical Social Worker for Lexington Medical Center.

’09 James "Marty" Kinard is currently the Deputy Director for Parks and Recreation in Orangeburg, S.C., where, in just a short time, he has made an impact on parks and recreation as they prepare to host the Dixie Youth World Series in 2024.

Marty was previously the head softball coach at Orangeburg Prep. He led the Indians to a regional championship and runners-up finish in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA).

In 2021, Claflin claimed the CIAA regular season championship, which earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Kinard was 115-81 overall and 59-7 in conference play at Claflin.

He coached eleven seasons of collegiate softball, 10 at Claflin University -- five as head coach, and one at Coker University.

Kinard, a native of Orangeburg, S.C., graduated from Edisto High School.

In 2017, Kinard led Claflin to its first-ever Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title and a SIAC Eastern Division title. Kinard was named 2017 Coach of the Year. The SIAC title earned Claflin its inaugural NCAA Regional appearance. In 2018, Kinard led his team to 37 wins. In the

Dr. Walter Lee

’12 Dr. Walter Lee, known as “The C.A.R.E. Specialist,” is an assistant professor of middle/secondary education at the University of South Carolina Upstate. He is also the campus coordinator of the nationally acclaimed Call Me MiSTER Program and an ambassador for the Black College Fund. Lee's research centers on self-concept development strategies for African American learners. His research encompasses various aspects such as the intersectionality of poverty and race, the concept of color blindness, equitable instructional practices, culturally relevant pedagogy, and cultural competence.

Lee employs qualitative research methodologies, including interviews, autoethnographies, and focus groups, to carry out his research. Lee teaches a range of courses covering topics like curriculum, instruction, assessment, and research. He has presented his theoretical framework for educating African American learners locally and nationally. His work on self-concept development fosters "healing through love and critical insight."

Dr. Naja A. Mack

’10 Dr. Naja A. Mack was born in Sumter, South Carolina, and is the fifth child of Buster and Margie Ballard-Mack. She graduated from Sumter High School in Sumter District 17 in 2006. Mack pursued her higher education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. During her time there, she was a member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Subsequently, Mack continued her academic journey at Clemson University, where she achieved a Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Interactive Computing in Fall 2013. Her significant accomplishment during this period was the successful defense of her dissertation, "ICon History: An Intelligent Conversational History Tutor," which led to the creation of the first social studies intelligent tutoring system. This system enables upper elementary students to engage in natural language conversations with virtual African American historical figures from the past.

Following her doctoral studies, Mack assumed the role of a Computing Innovation Postdoctoral Fellow at Morehouse College. Her research endeavors were dedicated to enhancing the attitudes, awareness, motivation, and participation of African American at-risk youth in computing. She achieved this by developing and evaluating the effectiveness of a coding boot camp prep course. In April 2021, Mack earned her Ph.D. in HumanCentered Computing under the guidance of Dr. Juan E. Gilbert from the Computer and Information Science Engineering Department at the University of Florida's Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Mack recently accepted a tenure-track assistant professor of computer science position at Morgan State University, where she will also be a National Science Foundation (NSF) VISION Fellow.

CPT Brandon McFadden

’13 Captain (CPT) Brandon McFadden was born on December 18, 1990, and hails from Kingstree, S.C. He is the son of Sarah McFadden and the late Willie McFadden. He joined the South Carolina National Guard during his junior year of high school, and he attended basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. CPT McFadden graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 2009 and attended Advanced Individual Training that summer. Immediately following graduation from military training, CPT McFadden moved into the High-Rise Residence Hall, where he started his matriculation at Claflin University. CPT McFadden graduated from Claflin University in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in management. He was also commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army through the SCSU/CU/VU ROTC Program.

After training at Fort Moore, Ga., CPT McFadden was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, from 2014 to 2017, where he served as a tank platoon leader and Battalion S-1 OIC. CPT McFadden was promoted to captain in 2017 and transitioned to an adjutant general officer. After graduating from Captain's Career Course in 2017, he was stationed at Fort Johnson, La., from 2018 to 2020, serving as a Battalion S-1 OIC. During this tenure, he completed his master's in HR Administration from Central Michigan University. From 2020 to 2023, CPT McFadden served as the G-1 EPS OIC and then Aide to the USARCENT Chief of Staff at Shaw A FB, SC. ’04 Ryan McLeod is a native of Columbia, S.C., and a graduate of Lower Richland High School in Hopkins, S.C. He earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from Claflin University in 2004. In January 2005, he accepted a job in Philadelphia, Pa., with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), where he remains employed. McLeod earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix. He is also the proud father of a 17-year-old daughter, Gabrielle Katie McLeod, and twin boys Adonis and Marceau McLeod. McLeod serves as a 1st line Supervisor in Customer Operation within the Construction and Equipment supply chain at DLA Troop Support in Philadelphia, Pa. He commenced his tenure at Troop Support in January 2005. In his current role, he oversees a team of 12 employees who collaborate with various military customers, assisting them with their orders through DLA.

’18 Matthew Victor Melvin was born on October 24, 1995, in Florence, S.C., and is the second of four children born to Reverend Michael and Doris Melvin. He received his education in the Florence County Schools and graduated from West Florence High School.

Colin M. Myers

’07 Although Colin Myers’ job title at Claflin University is web communications manager, he is also called on to photograph historical events or provide graphic designs for brochures, flyers, and social media. Myers, who joined Claflin's Office of Communications and Marketing in July 2017, earned a degree in studio art and digital design at his Alma Mater. His designs and photographs have captured the vibrancy, excitement, and “Claflin Confidence” inspired by the “Elevation and Transformation” taking place at University. During his formative years at Lakewood High School in Sumter, S.C., Myers' talents attracted the attention of another Sumter resident and Claflin alumnus, the late Dr. Ernest A. Finney Jr., the first African American Supreme Court Justice appointed to the South Carolina Supreme Court since the Reconstruction Era. After graduating from Lakewood, Myers chose Claflin University to continue the pursuit of his artistic ambitions. As a student, he received

several awards and honors, and one of his paintings won a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) poster competition. When Myers' interest in photography intensified, he used his academic training, creative instincts, and critical insight to become one of the Midlands South Carolina's most respected photographers. Those same attributes—in addition to his vast knowledge of various multimedia technologies—have earned Myers a growing reputation as a graphic designer. ’14 Xavier Roach is a native of Columbia, S.C. He received his B.S. from Claflin University in Elementary Education in December of 2014 and his master’s degree from Clemson University in Teaching and Learning with a Specialization in Instructional Coaching in December of 2018. After graduating from Claflin, Roach began his teaching career in January 2015 in Winnsboro, S.C., at Kelly Miller Elementary School as a fifth-grade English language arts and social studies teacher. Richland County School District One has been his home since August 2015. Roach has been at John P. Thomas Elementary School for approximately eight years. While at John P. Thomas, he has been named the Teacher of the Year, grade level chair, and serves as a member of the leadership team. Major Richard J. Wallace

’07 Major Richard J. Wallace is a physician assistant at Lowcountry Healthcare Systems in Williston, South Carolina. He is responsible for primary medical care and clinical duties while working under the direction of a physician. Richard completed his undergraduate education at Claflin University with a bachelor's degree in biology and a chemistry minor in 2007. He continued his education at the Medical University of South Carolina, obtaining a master's in physician assistant studies. He began his career with a direct ascension into the USAF in 2010. While in service, he was stationed at JB Charleston and Tyndall Air Force Base, providing care to active duty and retired military populations. He was deployed to Al Udeid Air Base. During his service in the USAF, he was a PA functional manager, Clinical Disaster team lead, and element leader. He also provided oversight for the Wing Blood Bank program. In addition to his civilian work, he continues to serve his country in the United States Air Force Reserves as part of the 315th Airlift Wing. While at Claflin University, she participated in several organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Wright also dedicated significant time to the Gerontology department at Methodist Oaks Assisted Living Facility, where she worked.

Ms. Wright continued her education at Grand Canyon University, graduating with honors and earning her MS in Professional Counseling.

Wright graduated with honors from Claflin University. She worked with victims of domestic assault and rape after Claflin. She

Ms. Wright previously served as the Executive Director at Williamsburg County Behavioral Health, formerly known as Williamsburg County Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Today, she is the proprietor of Leslie Wright Counseling, LLC. In this capacity, she holds licenses as a Professional Counselor, Substance Abuse Professional, Alcohol and Drug Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist. She is certified as a Prime for Life Instructor.
