Todd Southard
Superintendent
This year will mark my twenty-fourth year in education and my seventh year with Pilot Point ISD. I started my career in Terrell, Texas, where I served as an English I teacher. I taught and coached for a number of years at both Gunter ISD and Van Alstyne ISD. I started my administrative career in Anna, where I first served as a high school assistant principal and then served as the middle school principal for six years. We left the North Texas area for a year, and then returned in 2014, when I was named the Principal of Pilot Point High School. This year will be my first year as Superintendent of Pilot Point ISD. My family and I love this school and this community. To us, it’s home. Even though neither of us grew up here, we got here as quickly as we could! My wife, Jodi, is a speech language pathologist, and she works in the district. Our oldest son, Cooper, is in the seventh grade at the middle school, and our youngest son, Avery, is in the third grade at the intermediate school. In our spare time, we enjoy working with kids through PPYSA, and we also enjoy camping and boating. There’s no community like Pilot Point, and that’s why we have chosen to stay here and raise our family. Pilot Point is full of loyal, hard-working, and supportive people who want nothing but the best for our kids and our teachers. We bleed orange and black around here--and that’s the way it should be! Thank you all for your support and don’t ever hesitate to ask if you need something!
Jacob Williams
principal
2021-2022 will be year two for me at Pilot Point High School! With Covid-19 effectively behind us, we are looking forward to a traditional school year! My biggest takeaway from year one was that Pilot Point ISD truly does have the BEST kids in the state of Texas. A little about me... I grew up just north of Pilot Point in Whitesboro, Texas. I still currently reside on our family ranch in Whitesboro with my wife Emily, my daughter Taylnn (age 10), my son Landon (age 9), and my youngest daughter Blair (age 1). My two oldest children attend Pilot Point Elementary School. Prior to coming to Pilot Point, I spent 6 years in Anna ISD serving as a special education teacher, DAEP Principal, and High School Assistant Principal. In my free time I enjoy coaching my son’s soccer team, hunting and working with our herd of Dexter Cattle on our ranch! I am so excited to kick off the 2021-2022 school year! We are on track for a banner year of student success in all areas!

2021 Season
Preview
The Pilot Point Bearcats enter the 2021 campaign with high expectations. A pre-season Top Ten ranking places a target on their backs, the mark of a team that’s coming off a deep playoff run last season. The Cats were on the doorstep of playing for a State Championship. Entering the 2021 season, they want to knock the door down. “Anytime you can get in the playoffs and play at least four rounds, or deeper, you gotta feel good about that,” Bearcat Head Coach Danny David said. “You always want to win that state championship, but, there’s only one team that can do that. We felt good about the way the year went, the way the kids overcame all the obstacles and dealt with all the adversity of 2020. We expect big things this year. You want your kids to feel that way and they do.” Featuring one of the top athletes in north Texas, senior tailback Ish Harris, a physical offensive line, and playmakers on defense, David said the team’s goals remain as high as ever. “We’ve had eight weeks of practice that a lot of teams haven’t had the last two years,” David said of the post-season experience. “And also, I hope we’re getting to the point where we expect to win. Not that we’re just hoping to win anymore. You’ve had a little success here, so you have to expect that. But you’ve still got to work and still got to do the little things right and get better every day.” Looking back on summer preparations, David said he’s proud of the work the team put in. “Summer was a little different,” he said. “That rain early on put a damper on things and affected the first part of 7-on-7. But we did get some time in over at Celina. Also, we had a good Summer Pride. Had a good number of kids who showed up day in and day out. They got stronger and faster. That’s when championships are won. In the summer and the offseason. Everybody wants to play when the cheerleaders are out there. Momma and Daddy hollering and all that kind of stuff. But you got to put the work in beforehand if you want to be champion.” Leading the Bearcats from the sidelines this season will be three new faces on the Pilot Point coaching staff. “They’ve been great, great assets to us thus far,” David said. “One of is Keith Peacock. He’s been in Pilot Point before. He played here and is coming from Frisco Reedy. He’ll coach offensive line. Joey Stone is coming from Princeton. He’s been in the Plano school system for about 15 years, was offensive coordinator there for a while. He’ll coach golf along with wide receivers and defensive backs. He’s got great experience. And then we got Reed Eichenberger. He’ll head up our wrestling program. He’s been at Ponder and we’ve had our eye on him. The kids really respond to him, all the positive things he brings. We knew he was a guy we wanted on our staff.” Offensively, David expects the Cats to operate out of the same base as last season. Dakota David and Wyatt Smith will vie for the starting role under center, replacing all-everything standout Max Hollar. “I think we’ll try to attack defenses the same way,” Coach David said. “The only difference is you’re gonna have a quarterback who will take it 10, 15, 20 yards, whereas last year you had a guy who might take it 70 or 80 yards on you. That part is different. But I think you just have to coach it the same. These kids, both of them probably throw it at least as well as Max. Dakota got a little bit of experience last year, in three games for us. Wyatt had a great year in JV, going 7-3. I don’t think the attack will be much different. You’ve just got to coach to your personnel.

“They’re both pretty similar. They both run about the same. They’re smart kids who understand the game of football and they’re both leaders. I feel like both of them are quarterbacks that we can win with.” The Bearcats are known for being strong in the trenches. The bottom line is when Pilot Point has a talented and cohesive unit up front, that’s when the Cats have had their best teams overall. “That’s where it all starts,” Coach David said. “I don’t think a lot of folks realize how important the line is. I know those kids don’t get enough of the credit. We’re replacing three really good players and we’ll need some guys to step up. Aaron Stritmatter is a returning starter and was an All-District player. Dak Morgan is another returning starter on the left side. And we’ve got some guys we’ve moved around. Quentin Cox was our big tight end in JV and will move to tackle. We think he’ll be a big asset. We’ve got Ryan Riney, Gavin Wheeler, some of those guys from defense that we can plug in. “You know, Cole Eft, Eddie Bautista, Alphonzo Ortiz, were backups last year. We think we’ve got a good mix there. I think the line could be a team strength for us again. The kids are athletic and can run.” Harris, who has committed to play next fall at Texas A&M, is a 4-star recruit and is the returning district offensive player of the year. He rushed for 18 TDs and almost 1,800 yards a year ago. He’ll be relied upon to carry the mail for the Cats all season. “It’s an unbelievable luxury,” Coach David said. “But what made Ish go last year, was everybody also had to worry about Max taking off with the ball. It’s going to be a little different in that way this year. But Ish has matured. He’s got another year under his belt. He’s got a bright future in front of him, and he knows he’s got to have a big year to help make that future come about. He’s worked hard and is a very gifted young man. He makes cuts that a lot of people his size can’t. We don’t coach that, it’s just God-given ability. He’s blessed. We’re very excited to have him back and there will be a lot of games that we’re going to lean on him pretty heavy.” Asten Kirby and Aydon Cox are the top returning pass catchers for the Bearcats. “We know what those two can do. They’re dangerous with the ball in their hands. We also have Cade Carter who will be out wide,” Coach David said. “Preston Webb will be in the slot for us. Crew Chandler and some of those guys who were on JV last year, we’ll be counting on them to step up. Jesse Rangale and some of those guys. We lost some players there and we’ll just have to see how some of the younger ones make the transition to varsity.” Defensively, the scheme will be familiar for Bearcat fans. “We’ve been running it for several years, since the 70’s,” Coach David said. “You’ll see other teams like Argyle and Celina doing what we do scheme-wise. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. We feel like what we do defensively gives us a chance to be in every game.” Alex Puga was a post-season sparkplug for the Cats last year and headlines the defensive edge. “Puga started in JV, but played some major snaps and had some big plays for us,” Coach David said. “We’re expecting big things from him at DE. We’re going to move Aydon Cox to middle linebacker. We think Aydon has the talent to play anywhere and we like him in the middle of things. Our defensive front may be the key, with Riney, Dak, Gavin Wheeler, if he can stay healthy. Aaron Strittmatter will get some snaps in there. The place we may be hurting a little bit is depth. That’s what the deal is at this level, depth and health.” At linebacker, the Cats have a number of options around Cox, who will be asked to captain the defense. “Cale Martin, Dakota David, and Curly Brockman, those guys will get looks in there,” Coach David said. “We’ve got some good talent. We’d like for Ish to have some packages at linebacker, but we need him in the secondary.”

The rest of the defensive backfield is a speedy and experienced group. “We’re looking at Asten, who did a real good job for us last year, and Crew at the corners,” Coach David said. “Wyatt and Ish at the safeties. We got Steven Rodus who can fit in. Preston Webb will have a role for us. There may be some transfers or someone from JV who will move up, too.” Looking at the schedule, the Cats are predicted to contend for the league title along with Brock once again. The Bearcats will be tested in the pre-district slate, however. “We’re in probably one of the toughest districts,” Coach David said. “Some schools got new coaches. There will be new things to be prepared for. Our pre-district is really tough. There’s a chance we could be 0-3 to start, then get in district and win it. We’ll have to coach our tails off. But playing good talent like that will only make you better. Our kids have the mindset of we’re going to reload and be right there with the top teams in the state again this year.”

2020 Season Review Game 7 Pilot Point vs. Whitesboro Massey Stadium | 10/16/2000
6-24 I
n one of the more surprising outcomes of the 2020 season, the Pilot Point Bearcats were upset by the Whitesboro Bearcats 24-6 in the fourth district game of the year. The Cats, who were missing key cogs in the lineup to injury and eligibility issues, fell to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in district action with the loss. Whitesboro outplayed the Bearcats all night and held the Cats’ vaunted ground attack to a total of 60 yards rushing. WHS seemed to have a group of defenders ready to pounce every timetailback Ish Harris touched the ball. Both teams played to a stalemate for much of the first quarter. After a dazzling 53-yard run down the middle of the field by Mac Harper, Whitesboro lit the scoreboard first. The score came on a 5-yard rushing TD from Harper. The PAT from Jorge Montes put the Bearcats ahead 7-0 with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. Then with 5:28 in the second quarter, Harper tossed down the sideline to Jacob Smith on a 45-yard touchdown pass, making the score 14-0. Whitesboro found the end zone for a third time just before halftime when Montes booted a 36-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the half, giving Whitesboro a commanding 17-0 lead. The Bearcat offense could not muster any momentum in the firsthalf as Whitesboro held the Bearcats to a paltry -11 yards on 14 carries. Harris had 10 carries for only 10 yards in the opening half, whilequarterback Dakota David connected on 6 of 11 passes for 68 yards. David was under center for the injured Max Hollar. The second half did not begin on a good not for Pilot Point. On the first play from scrimmage David was intercepted by Devon Price, who returned the pigskin 29 yards deep into Bearcat territory. Harper scored a TD on the next play, giving Whitesboro a 24-0 lead with 10:24 left in the third. Pilot Point responded with their best drive of the night, as Davidfound Jay Cox for a 19- yard touchdown over the middle. The 2-point run failed, and Pilot Point trailed 24-6 with 8:12 left in the game. The Bearcats moved the ball in the second half, posting 14 first downs and 169 passing yards. But mistakes and penalties along with a stout Whitesboro defense kept PPHS out of the end zone. Whitesboro claimed the 24-6 win as the final horn sounded. Defensively, Pilot Point only gave up 160 yards, with 98 of those yards coming on two plays. The Bearcats were led offensively by David who completed 22 of 36 passes for 237 yards and two interceptions while having two passes dropped in the end zone.
