Players to watch: QB Clifton Cooper (6-1, 170), DL Steven Carmona (6-1, 270), TE Dillon Cope (6-3, 230, 4.9), WR Case Peacock (6-1, 180, 4.8), WR Graham Whitewood (6-1, 190, 4.6). Top juniors: WR Mitch Nuziard (5-8, 165, 4.5), QB/ LB Brannock Sorensen (6-1, 190, 4.9).
Other prospects: LB Trey Kysiak, RB Zane Cassidy, LB Mason Hodges, OL Ty Drager, DB Keyser Montoya, OL Ihra Montoya, OL/DE Karsten Espolt, RB Tad Tamplen.
2022 notes: The Lions expect to take a big leap forward in their second season under Kyle Cooper as PHS could have one of the most explosive offensive attacks in the region. QB Cooper (2,535 yards, 24 TDs passing) is back to lead the offense and has plenty of weapons back including WR Peacock (71-1,085, 11 TDs receiving), WR Whitewood (33-427, 4 TDs receiving) and TE Cope, who hauled in five touchdowns a year ago. The key for Ponder to get into the playoff chase in a tough district will be how its defense improves.

The Bearcats held a lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game, but ultimately watched Paradise (6-0, 2-0) rally for a 48-34 win at Massey Stadium Sept. 30. Pilot Point fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in district play while Paradise remained undefeated on the season.
A 50-yard TD pass from Wyatt Smith to Asten Kirby put the Cats ahead 34-33 with 10:06 left in the game. The Bearcats looked to be seizing control at that point, forcing a 3-and-out and taking possession at the Panther 40 with about nine minutes to play. However, a pre-snap penalty on first down moved the Cats back five yards and they suffered their own 3-and-out.
Taking the ball at their own 5 yard line, Paradise struggled to move the football, before a gut-check fourth and 4 from its own 11 was converted. With the momentum swung, Paradise QB Austin Iglesias lobbed a pass to Landon Holley, who raced 77 yards for the go-ahead TD. The pass for 2 was good, and Paradise grabbed a 41-34 lead.
Pilot Point took the ball at their own 25, but four consecutive incompletions turned the ball over on downs. With less than 2 minutes to play and a very short field to work with, Iglesias ran 5 yards on first down, then weaved through the Cats’ defense for a 20-yard rushing TD.
The PAT pushed Paradise ahead 48-34 and provided the final margin.
The Bearcats moved to the Paradise 29 behind three completions from Smith to Collin Lynch and two to Kirby, before Smith was sacked on three straight drop backs to end the game.
Pilot Point took the ball to begin the game, but was forced to punt after three plays. Paradise scored on its first possession of the game, moving 55 yards in just three plays, capped by a 32-yard rushing TD by Iglesias.
The PAT failed and Paradise held a 6-0 lead with 9:23 to go in the first.
The two teams exchanged punts before Pilot Point embarked on its first scoring drive. Moving from midfield, the Cats saw Gage Anderson run for 20 yards on second down, setting up a 27-yard scrambling TD from Smith. Elias Alejos hit the PAT to push the Cats ahead 7-6 with 3:30 left in the first quarter.
Paradise answered right back, moving 65 yards in three plays, capped by a 1-yard TD run by Iglesias. The PAT put Paradise back in front 13-7 with 8:59 to go before halftime.
Pilot Point had an answer. Driving 64 yards in 10 plays, Smith found Kirby on a 24-yard TD pass. Alejos was true with the PAT to put the Cats ahead 14-13 with 5:58 to go before halftime.
Paradise would then drive 67 yards in seven plays, after Leo Hernandez ran 6 yards for a touchdown. The PAT put the Panthers in the lead 20-12 with 2:36 left in the first half.
The Bearcats drove to the Panther 44 just before halftime, before losing yardage and punting to end the half.
Paradise took the ball to begin the third quarter, but three plays later, Smith intercepted an Iglesias pass to set the Cats up at the Panther 31. Nine plays later, Smith scored on a 1-yard QB sneak. Smith then passed to Alex Puga for the 2-point conversion to put the Cats ahead 22-19 with 7:29 to go in the third.
The Panthers came right back, however. Iglesias hit Ayden Winters on a 62-yard passing TD and the PAT gave Paradise the 26-22 lead with 6:34 to go in the third.
The Panthers executed an onside kick to steal another possession, and Iglesias ran in a 5-yard TD seven plays later. The PAT was good and PHS held a 33-22 lead with 3:59 to go in the third quarter.
Pilot Point took possession at its own 14, but just eight plays later Smith found Kirby for a 38-yard TD. The pass for 2 failed as Paradise held a 33-28 lead with 41 seconds left in the third.
The Bearcat defense held Paradise to a 3-and-out, prior to the third Smith to Kirby TD of the night.
Kirby finished with 10 catches for 188 yards and 3 TDs. Smith was 20-36 for 290 yards and 3 TDs with no interceptions while adding a team-leading 49 yards and 2 TDs on the ground.
Lynch added 62 yards receiving on 6 grabs.
Cooper Lock led Pilot Point with 12 tackles, while Junior Servin had 11 stops, including a sack.

October 15, 2021 - Bearcat Stadium, Whitesboro
Bearcat Head Coach Danny David has said the Pilot Point vs. Whitesboro game has produced some unexpectedly close contests in recent years. Last week’s game was perhaps the most thrilling yet.
David’s team triumphed with a 38-34 double overtime road win, keeping Pilot Point (5-2, 4-0) undefeated in district play and atop the league standings.
The visiting Bearcats had to rally in this one, trailing 14-6 with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter and struggling to maintain offensive drives to that point.
Following a Whitesboro TD, Pilot Point took the ball with 11:10 left in regulation, starting the game-tying drive on their own 31.
The Cats moved 69 yards in 14 plays, chewing up more than 6 minutes off the clock. Ish Harris capped the drive with a 3-yard TD burst. Wyatt Smith passed for 2 to Aydon Cox to tie the game at 14-14.
Whitesboro answered right back, however, moving 60 yards in just 5 plays, capped by a Mac Harper to Torran Naglestad TD pass of 20 yards. The PAT was good and with just 3:02 left in regulation, Whitesboro held a 21-14 lead.
Pilot Point responded with a clutch drive of its own. Taking the ball at its own 43, the Bearcats used completions to Cade Carter, Cox and Harris to move into the red zone. With 35 seconds left, Harris ran 2 yards for the score. The PAT from Elias Alejos was clutch, tying the game at 21-21.
PPHS held Whitesboro, who attempted a fake field goal at the buzzer, in the closing seconds to force overtime.
Whitesboro took the ball to begin the first OT.
The homestanding Bearcats were stonewalled on the first two plays, but hit a 26-yard TD pass on the third play for the TD. The PAT was good, and Whitesboro held a 28-21 lead.
Pilot Point had an opportunity to match the touchdown and extend the game. Smith found Carter for 14 yards on first down. Gage Anderson ran for 3 yards and Smith ran for 3. Then on third and 2, Harris jumped over defenders for a 5-yard TD. Alejos hit the PAT just as the play clock expired, tying the game at 28-28 and forcing a second OT.
Pilot Point took the ball to start the second overtime period. Smith ran for 13 yards on first down, Anderson ran for 8, then Smith covered the final 4 yards for the TD on a zone read play. On the 2-point conversion pass, the Bearcats had an open receiver, but he lost his feet and the pass fell incomplete for a 34-28 lead.
Whitesboro had a chance to win the game with a TD and subsequent PAT on its possession. But the Bearcat defense had other plans.
Curly Brockman sacked Harper on first down for an 8-yard loss, followed by an Eddie Gaytan sack for a 10-yard loss on second down. The Pilot Point rush once again got to Harper on third down, forcing an incompletion. Harper was able to complete a pass on fourth down, but it was way short of the line to gain, as Pilot Point emerged with the win.
Whitesboro began the game with a defensive gameplan mirroring that of last year, where it was intent on shutting down Harris.
Pilot Point could only manage a field goal in the first quarter, carrying a 3-0 lead into the second period. With 8:18 to go before halftime, Harper found Jace Sanders on an 11-yard TD pass. The PAT was good for a 7-3 Whitesboro lead. Both teams played a scoreless remainder of the quarter, as WHS carried a 7-3 lead into halftime.
With 2:55 remaining in the third period, Alejos hit a 32-yard field goal to pull Pilot Point within 7-6.
Smith finished the game 16 of 30 passing for 206 yards, and added 62 yards and a TD on 14 rushes.
Harris tallied 91 yards and 3 TDs on 21 totes. Cox once again topped the century mark in receiving with 134 yards on 8 catches.
