Athletic Training Program

T

he athletic training program at Pilot Point High School enters its 4th year with Coach Jessica Peters at the helm. The program is the largest it has ever been with her leadership with 18 students entering into this year’s roster. The inaugural Sports Medicine 1 course was added for the 2021-2022 school term and for those interested in healthcare it peaked a lot of interest in the athletic training student program. Those students that have a passion for healthcare and a medical field pursuit for their college or technical school of choice, this program is a great fit. It combines many of the favorite healthcare fields into one. (i.e. physical therapy, exercise science, sports medicine, nutrition, sport safety, first responder as well as your usual administrative healthcare roles as well. There are a total of 7 returners and 11 new-comers that have joined up this year. The program currently has 3 seniors, 7 juniors, and 6 sophomores enrolled in the first section of the Sports Medicine course pathway with 2 new freshmen that are learning their way through the basics for a year before they enroll in the Sports Medicine courses. Students in the Athletic Training program learn basic first aid skills and taping along with emergency management skills of CPR, emergency preparedness, Stop the Bleed, heat illness management and equipment removal as it pertains to football equipment. Students complete training, practice and skills assessment for ankle taping in order to tape athletes for practice and games.
