ALLEY

SELF-SUSTAINING NEIGHBORHOOD

Alley is a mixed-use affordable housing complex in Asheville, NC that improves upon traditional subsidized housing and breaks down the social and economic barriers that divide struggling people with their community.

The open path provides a solution for pedestrians and invites them inward. Once invited, visitors are welcomed by commercial spaces that promote donations towards sustaining the Alley. These funds are directed towards housing for residents, allowing those in need to engage in a vibrant living experience that many affordable housing solutions fail to provide.

A community art studio on the ground floor also drives Alley’s economic system. Attached to the cores along the eastern perimeter are largescale, removable murals that are created by local artists and sold in auctions. Proceeds from these sales are funneled back to the residents of the Alley to perpetuate this sustainable loop.

UNHOUSED DEMOGRAPHICS

After the COVID pandemic, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Committee recorded drastically increased rates of unhoused people throughout the U.S. While efforts to assist those in need have expanded in Asheville, in 2024, the number of people experiencing homelessness is 163% higher than before the pandemic

STRUCTURAL DESIGN

Alley utilizes two pairs of diagrid HSS steel exoskeletons to create its wide, open interior. The implementation of this unconventional structure challenges traditional affordable housing projects that seek to create the most units with the lowest cost, sacrificing the quality of life for residents.

A suspension cable system is attached to the roof girders and supports the lightweight steel walkways that provide interior circulation. The other edge of the walkway is then fixed the the exoskeleton with L-brackets and spacers. By using this support and bracing method, the linear space can be protected.
