Fall 2020Reimagining Public Hosuing Studio

Through breaking up the the superblock into smaller blocks, softening the tall monolithic nature of the NYCHA building typology through ground-level intervetions of new program and neccessities, using this new program to shape the endless park space into more intimite and warm green common spaces, and introudcing new housing typologies, I hope to make The New Albany Commons a place where tenants are able to have all their needs met on site and become self-reliant, but also make it a place where people who are not tenants want to visit and enter and enjoy, making the Commons a destination rather than just a place to live.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn- The New Albany Projects Urban Planning,Community, Public Housing

My Vision for a better, more equitable city consists of a citywide focus on providing the fundemental neccessities and resources for each and every resident (regardless of class), increasing their quality of life so they may be afforded the rightful opportunity to achieve self-actualization.

01 NEW ALBANY COMMONS 401 Project

While the idea and concept of Public/Affordable housing seems simple enough, there are many political and social influences that complicate its success, thus undermining the quality of life of thousands of New Yorkers and amplifying the inequalities that they must bare.

Fleeing growing oppressive surveillance in 2071, political activists and enemies of the state have escaped to the Amazon in search of refuge and isolation from the powers that be. In response, the powers that be have sent out Eyes, drones with the mission of surveilling and capturing the escapees; evasion is now survival.

Materials: Mirrors, Glass, Steel frames, woven fabric, Wooden Columns.

Design Approach: Modular hexagonal frames with alternating mirror and transparent panels work together to create easily constructed facilities with the intent of confusing technology and distorting reality.

02 EYES : OFF THE MAP 403 Project

In order to secure the future of the community, the inhabitants will have to stay on their toes as they participate in this game of cat and mouse with the EYES, providing for themselves day to day and creating communal culture in this new environment, all while avoiding being caught by these extensions of an oppressive state.

Tools/Software: Unity,Some C#(mini-map and antagonistic EYES),Rhino,Agisoft(photogrammetry software).

Using the science of reflectivity as a form of crypis, found naturally in the dart nosed fish and the strong structural capacities afforded by hexagonal geometries, found naturally in bee nests, the people have created facilities that offer safety as the drones cannot see these places well due to their shiny and cryptic nature.

The richness of Black Bottom and Paradise valley exist in the soil/ land and are likened to a rhizome, a thick unorthodox root that travels linearly just under the soil, absorbing nutrients and minerals from the soil in the root, and then sending up shoots when conditions are right on the surface. Rhizomatic plants are often seen as invasive because of their resilience, their ability to survive even if you raze what is on the surface. In this hidden reality, we are speculating what would happen if this rhizome, sitting in the earth, taking in this rich trapped black space, is allowed to flourish, grow and reclaim the highway to support the revival/ re- materialization of the Black cultural and social mecca that was Black Bottom and Paradise Valley.

03

Located in Detroit, Black Bottom and Paradise Valley were social and cultural meccas, a symbolic center of Black life. This place was one of the major destinations of the Great Migration of the twentieth century, a mass exodus of Black people fleeing the intense racism in the South in search of better opportunities . Black bottom & Paradise Valley, which were significant centers of African American life, were razed by the city of Detroit and state of Michigan for urban renewal and to construct the Chrysler Freeway ( I- 375 ), displacing large numbers of Black people and creating root shock in the Black community that has present day ramifications.

Community Center of Arverne

OverviewData

Given the area’s high risk for severe storm damage and flooding, my design approach was heavily focused on creating a sturcturally sound center that was floodproof, equipped with a turbine sitting right under the the main atrium that can generate electricity for the inhabitants using the force of floodwater in the case of a powerful storm. The ground was shaped in a way to keep the building itself above the flood plane, as well as optimized to concentrate the storm water into a bottleneck to theoretically reap the most energy possible.

Keeping in mind the inequalities in access to leisure activities and technology that exists between West Rockaway (the more affluent side), and East Rockaway (where our site is located), the programs selected were chosen in an effort to equip the youth of Far Rockaway with many technology based shops to create to their hearts’ content.

In partnership with RISE Rockaways, an organization whose focus is supporting a more socially equitable and sustainable Far Rockaway (a coastal community), we were prompted to design a community center that could be utilized as a lockdown center in the case of a climate disaster, one like Hurricane Sandy.

As Climate Change continues to make the occurence of climate disasters more commonplace, we must task ourselves with designing proactively to protect areas at risk for severe damage.
