FALL 2015 Change Happens, Family Matters Things are changing all around us. The weather is turning cooler and with it the leaves turn to brilliant shades of color. Fluctuating political polls and escalating company mergers show us that change is continuous. However, one thing remaining constant is family.

Whether by genetics, marriage, living arrangements, or caring, all of us belong to a “family.” CJE SeniorLife, by definition, is an eldercare organization, yet the relationships that are formed among staff, clients, and volunteers are similar to that of a family.

So, in this season of change, from our family to yours, we wish you a sweet, happy and healthy new year. CJE Volunteer Services Department

Enriching Lives one Activity at a Time Games and activities can bring people together in groups and enhance a sense of belonging. This is beneficial to CJE’s clients and residents—for it can help improve memory, dexterity, reduce stress and remove a sense of isolation. Many of these activities are led by CJE volunteers. Recently, these Activity Leader volunteers met to share ideas about activities to further engage our seniors while enhancing their lives. These volunteers donate their time at a number of our locations including Robineau Residence, Bernard Horwich Building, Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Adult Day Services and Weinberg Community. The activities they lead include: trivia, current events and games. CJE also hosts various organizations fulfilling their community day of service by leading activities for our residents and clients.

Quotable Quotes

Activity Leader volunteers (left to right) Ned Simonson, Todd Duncan and Charles Sproger, share a smile.

For their Corporate Day of Service, employees from COBIUS Healthcare Solutions (division of Johnson & Johnson) engaged Lieberman Center residents in activities.

For the past 5 years, most Monday afternoons, you will find me sharing trivia with a group of 15 to 20 Gidwitz Place residents. The Social Hall is filled with their laughter and stories. They share memories—of military service, the cost of going to the movies in the “old days” and radio programs of a bygone era. Though they thank me each week, it is I who feel blessed to share my life with them. They are my role models. --Mitch Portugal Volunteer Gidwitz Place
