PROJECT: Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub CONTRACTOR: HEB Construction CLIENT: Christchurch City Council VALUE: $33.8m

When the site of Christchurch’s new sports hub was blessed in August 2017, the torch was handed to HEB Construction, which signified its role on the next ‘leg’ – developing the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.

Engaged by Christchurch City Council to undertake the challenge of sprinting into a new sporting era with the construction of a long-awaited world-class facility to replace those that were damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes, Ngā Puna Wai is home to combined facilities for sporting disciplines including athletics, hockey, tennis and rugby league.

Working alongside BECA, design consultant and management, surveillance, and quality assurance (MSQA) and AECOM (project management and independent estimating on the client’s behalf), HEB accepted the challenge, working with multiple stakeholders to successfully deliver Christchurch’s new home for sport.

The complex project kicked off in August 2017, with works continuing among the progressive handover of the four stages. The athletics track, field facilities and main carpark were delivered first in May 2018, followed by the hockey fields in September 2018. The 12 outdoor acrylic tennis courts were finished in March 2019 with the rugby league fields in June 2019.
