A key resource consent condition required the decommissioning of the Te Maunga Wastewater Treatment Plant sludge pond.

This activated the need for a new thickening and dewatering facility that would be state of the art and integrated into the existing plant. It was paramount that the project did not affect the existing operating treatment plant, which had an average daily flow of 18,800m3/d.

Key challenges stood in the way. Time was restricted, the project site had a small footprint, high water table and poor ground conditions were all just the start. Design drawings were not detailed, presenting a challenge for the BPC team to manage an incomplete design against programme demands. Despite these challenges and almost 400 notices to engineer being issued, the project was successfully delivered to an extremely high standard of quality and is a testament to the problem-solving capability of BPC’s engineers, best for project thinking, and commitment to our clients.
