This precious conservation area spans 720 beautiful square miles of mountains, glens and lochs and is home to a wonderful array of wildlife and outdoor activities.

• Discover Loch Lomond, beneath the majestic peak of Ben Lomond, the tranquil woodland glens of the Trossachs, the rugged mountain terrain of Breadalbane in the north, and the ancient Argyll Forest, located at the western edge of the park.

• The Highland Boundary Fault, the geological rift between the Highlands and Lowlands, runs through the park and can be seen at Loch Lomond stretching along Conic Hill and back across the islands of Inchmurrin, Creinch, Torrinch and Inchcailloch.

• Take in the ‘bonnie banks’ of Loch Lomond using the water bus service which provides access to the attractive villages of Inversnaid, Luss, Tarbet, Balmaha, Inchcailloch and Rowardennan.

The length of the park’s boundary is an incredible 202 miles.

• Grab your binoculars and set off on the 25 mile Bird of Prey Trail through the Trossachs for the chance to see ospreys, hen harriers and even golden eagles.

• Take a bike ride along the West Loch Lomond Cycle Path, a 17 mile long cycle trail that leads from Balloch at the southern tip of Loch Lomond to Tarbet.

• Enjoy a gentle stroll along the Luss Village Paths with four walking trails that lead through the streets and the surrounding countryside of this pretty conservation village.

• At the The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre, located in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, you can learn about the wildlife of the Trossachs and enjoy magnificent views that take in the Campsie Hills, Ben Lomond and Loch Ard Forest.

• Take a ferry out to see Inchmahome Priory, a ruined Augustinian monastery set on an island on the Lake of Menteith, where Mary Queen of Scots once took refuge.

• Experience a fantastic range of watersports that includes canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, wakeboarding, water skiing and fishing.

• See if you can scale the heights of Ben More, near Crianlarich, the highest of the park’s 21 Munros, which measures 1,174 m.

• With 50 rivers and burns and 22 large lochs, the park offers fishing that is second to none.

Cast your line in the River Leven, one of Scotland’s most renowned salmon and trout fishing rivers.

• Experience the glorious sight of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park from the sky. Take off from the still surface of Loch Lomond in a seaplane and soar above rugged mountain peaks, crystal-clear lochs and emerald forests.

• Find out what makes Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park so special at the National Park Visitor Centre in Balmaha.

• Rising just above the sleepy village of Balmaha, a climb up the summit of Conic Hill will reward walkers with stellar views across Loch Lomond and its islands.

Delve into the heart of ‘Rob Roy Country’ and explore a remarkable landscape of dramatic mountains, lush forests and glistening lochs.

• Born near Loch Katrine in 1671, Rob Roy MacGregor spent most of his colourful life in the Breadalbane area of the Trossachs, and you can visit his grave at the Kirk of Balquhidder.

• The entrancing Loch Katrine in the Trossachs was the inspiration behind Sir Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake and you can glide across it aboard a historic steamship named after the famous writer.

• Climb to the summit of Ben A’an, one of the Trossachs’ most recognisable natural landmarks, and admire the sublime views.

• Keen birdwatchers should pay a visit to Queen Elizabeth Forest Park for the chance to see birds of prey including golden eagles, sparrowhawks, kestrels, peregrines, buzzards and red kites.

• Queen Elizabeth Forest Park is also home to Go Ape! Discover an aerial playground that boasts two of Britain’s longest zip wires, each measuring over 400 m, which fly passengers 150 ft above the ground and past a spectacular waterfall.

• Visit one of the finest fly fishing locations in central Scotland at the Lake of Menteith and cast your line for rainbow and brown trout.

The Trossachs • Spend a day in the bustling town of Callander and browse its independent stores before enjoying lunch in one of its many pubs and restaurants. After, cross the impressive footbridge over the Bracklinn Falls.

• The Scottish Wool Centre in the village of Aberfoyle boasts a menagerie of creatures ranging from hens and sheep to birds of prey and miniature ponies. Browse a fantastic selection of whiskies and traditional Scottish fare in the well-stocked food hall.

• Experience some of the finest scenery the Trossachs has to offer on the Three Lochs Forest Drive.

Set off on the Duke’s Pass through Achray Forest and drive along 7.5 miles of winding road which offers breathtaking views across the Trossachs.

Cycle trail • Hire an electric bike at Katrinewheelz and enjoy a leisurely cycle along the shore path. Why not return by boat and relax as you glide across the loch?

Surprising trail Follow the Loch Ard Sculpture Trail, beginning in Aberfoyle, and encounter timber statues carved by chainsaw and sound posts that emit the calls of local wildlife.

Get your walking boots on Follow the Fairy Knowe Trail to see an old Scots pine tree decorated with offerings for the faeries who are said to inhabit Doon Hill.

Walk amongst the towering conifers of Strathyre Forest on the Black Parks Trail.

Enjoy incredible views from the top of Ben A’an, overlooking Loch Katrine.

The Kinlochard Bay Walk offers sightings of red and roe deer in Loch Ard Forest.

Translated from Gaelic as the ‘high country of Scotland’, Breadalbane boasts spectacular mountain scenery. Climb to the summit of towering peaks and explore charming villages nestled amid this dramatic landscape.

• Delve into the fascinating past of the picturesque village of Killin on the Killin Heritage Trail. Discover the stories behind its beautiful old buildings, the origins of its place names, its local folklore and much more.

• Cross the bridge in Killin and admire the spectacular Falls of Dochart as they cascade over rocks and swirl around the island of Inchbuie.

• Rising majestically above Loch Earn, Ben Vorlich is one of Scotland’s most recognisable mountains. The most popular climb to its summit starts from Ardvorlich in the north.

• Another Munro popular amongst hillwalkers is Ben Lui, the highest of a group of four Munros that lie south of Glen Lochy. Begin the 3 km ascent to the top where the burn of Eas Daimh flows into the loch and descend via its smaller but equally impressive sister Beinn a’ Chleibh, which lies to the south west.

• Breadalbane marks the midpoint of the Rob Roy Way, a long distance route which runs from Drymen near Loch Lomond to Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire.

• Pay a visit to the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor at Balquhidder before walking up Creag an Tuirc, a high knoll which overlooks the village and Loch Voil.

• Located on the famous West Highland Line, Crianlarich Railway Station has a tearoom which offers magnificent views of Cruach Ardrain.

• Stay at the Monachyle Mhor Hotel and you can learn how to capture top quality images of the stunning landscape with a professional photographer.

• Discover all manner of marine creatures at Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Aquarium ranging from seahorses and jellyfish to sharks and a giant green sea turtle named Cammy.

The rich habitats of this unspoilt part of Scotland provide a haven for a wonderful array of wildlife from magnificent birds of prey to red deer and rare species.

• The National Park is home to several pairs of ospreys who return each spring to mate. See them hunting at Loch Venachar, Loch Lomond, Loch Eck and the Lake of Menteith during the summer months.

• Watch live footage of these magnificent birds of prey as well as red squirrels and pine martens transmitted from deep within the Trossachs at The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre.

• Drive along the circular Bird of Prey Trail and you can see up to 13 different species.

• On the east shore of Loch Lomond is Inversnaid RSPB Nature Reserve, home to buzzards, woodpeckers and red deer.

• Take the ferry out to the wooded island of Inchcailloch to explore Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve where you can watch flocks of whitefronted, pink-footed and greylag geese arrive during autumn.

• A small peninsula in the Firth of Clyde, Ardmore Point is a fantastic place to go bird watching and look for seals.

• Explore the National Nature Reserves of Ben Lui and Ben Lawers and you’ll find rare alpine plants during the summer months and might even see deer rutting in the autumn.

Playful red squirrels • Cast your line in Loch Lomond for a variety of trout, pike, salmon and more. The rivers Teith, Devon, Allan and Forth also offer excellent salmon and trout fishing.

• Other creatures you can hope to see in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park include otters, capercaillies, red squirrels, black grouse and the water vole, one of Britain’s most endangered native species which is making a comeback in the Trossachs.

Discover the places, castles and legends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park which may have inspired the creators of Disney•Pixar’s Brave.

• Located just beyond the Falls of Dochart in the grounds of Kinnell House, the ancient clan seat of the McNabs, you’ll find the Kinnell Stone Circle which consists of six large stones that date back to the Bronze Age. • Pay a visit to the haunting ruin of Finlarig Castle near Killin, once the residence of the Earls of Breadalbane.

• Nearby you’ll find Fingal’s Stone, a large protruding rock believed to mark the grave of the mythical Celtic warrior and giant Fingal. According to legend, Fingal died on an island on Loch Dochart after a fearsome battle with his nemesis and fellow giant Fionn.

• Just north of Inversnaid, on the banks of Loch Lomond, lies a cave where the legendary outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor is said to have hidden during his time as a cattle rustler.

• Legend has it that the Irish princess Saint Kentigerna settled on the island of Inchcailloch. Today you can visit the ruined 13th century church that was built in her honour.

• Feel as though you’ve stepped into the mystical world of Brave on a walk amongst the ancient trees of Loch Ard Forest which is set against the spectacular backdrop of Ben Lomond.

• Perched on an imposing volcanic outcrop overlooking the Firth of Clyde, Dumbarton Castle was an important royal refuge during the Dark Ages. Climb up the 557 steps to the top of the White Tower Crag to take in views that stretch for miles.

Rob Roy’s Grave Off A84, 2 miles west of Kingshouse, Balquhidder Rob, his wife Mary and two of their four sons are buried in a simple grave in tranquil Balquhidder churchyard.

A folk hero of the Highlands, Rob Roy MacGregor lived most of his life in the Breadalbane area. He became a legend during his own lifetime when his fictional biography was published by Daniel Defoe.

The story was later embellished in the novel Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott.

Loch Lomond NNR embraces five of the loch's islands, each supporting rich, mature oak woodland. The Reserve also includes the wetlands around the mouth of the River Endrick. These flood most winters and host good numbers of wildfowl, such as teal, wigeon and greylag geese.

• Take a tour of Auchentoshan Distillery, located at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills this is the only distillery in Scotland with a third still which allows every drop of whisky to be triple distilled.

• Glengoyne Distillery, near Killearn, is one of Scotland’s most beautiful distilleries and offers tours. Their whisky is distilled slower than any other single malt Scotch whisky.

By water By rail There is a good rail network in the region with stations at Balloch, Helensburgh and Dumbarton, all served from Glasgow.

Arrochar, Crianlarich and Tyndrum are served by the Glasgow to Oban line.

Stirling (with trains from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness) is also a good stopping off point for exploring the Trossachs. For more information visit www.scotrail.co.uk

Throughout the year you will find all kinds of celebrations going on in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

From sports and arts to wildlife, the park boasts a full programme of events and festivals.

• Highland games are a common feature during the summer months.

The likes of Balloch, Helensburgh, Luss, Lochearnhead and Callander all have Highland games where you can expect an entertaining mixture of Highland dancing, piping and the crowd-pleasing heavy events such as tossing the caber.

• Sample the region’s finest ales over 10 days at the end of August at the Trossachs Beer Festival, when local brewers come together to display their products.

• The Lomond Folk Festival in Balloch bills itself as Scotland’s friendliest family festival and consists of three fun-packed days in July of concerts, music sessions, workshops, street entertainment, a kids’ ceilidh and a craft fair.

• The annual Callander Jazz and Blues Festival is a hugely popular extravaganza of live music that occurs at the end of September and even includes a jazz cruise on Loch Katrine.

• Watch live cookery demonstrations at the Loch Lomond Food & Drink Festival in September.
