HELLO

HELLO FROM YOUR

SPORTS OFFICER My name is Edward Armitage and I’m your incoming Sports Officer for City, University of London. I’m a third year law student, I’ve played rugby since the age of four and I am the current captain of the University Rugby team. I’m such a keen runner and cyclist that I cycled from London to Budapest (1,250 miles) in two weeks to raise money for Cancer Research and started on a trip to Zambia, Livingstone’s very first running club. I’m very excited about Sport at City for the coming year. So much has developed and there is so much more to be done. As your Sports Officer, I aim to heighten the status of Sport at City and ensure that every student knows who we are and what we are about. You’ll be able to find out about my endeavours to ensure you have the best experience possible on campus and online, so keep an eye out. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Bill Thompson

Why should you get involved? University Head of Sport & Leisure Services provides us with a first class education. However, it’s not all about exams. I’m a firm believer that sport allows us to meet new people, try new things and make a difference to our community. Participating in a sports team, meeting every week to train and play, as well as socialising, not only achieves these, but also improves your mental health, makes you more employable and improves your overall work ethic. The benefits of playing sport are evident and I implore all of you to get involved as much as possible. Don’t be shy, we are an extremely welcoming and inclusive bunch here at City and there’s always something for everyone. I very much look forward to meeting you all this academic year.

BRITISH UNIVERSITIES & COLLEGES SPORT British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK, whose vision is ‘to enhance the student experience through sport’. BUCS deliver more than 50 sports to over 160 universities. This comprises of a busy league programme of over 4,800 teams and over 100 championship knockout competition events every year. They also host the BUCS nationals for individual sport athletes, the UK’s largest annual multi-sport event.

LONDON UNIVERSITY SPORTS LEAGUE London University Sports Leagues (LUSL) and knockout competitions are also organised by BUCS specifically for universities in the London region. Their rules are more relaxed than BUCS competitions and they are targeted at less competitive teams that are just starting out. The aim of LUSL is to create a more fun and relaxed atmosphere to encourage wider participation in sport. The majority of City’s sports teams compete in the BUCS leagues with a handful participating in LUSL competitions. Whether you are a member of a sports team or an individual athlete, you will have the chance to travel around the UK to other university campuses and compete at international standard facilities and iconic venues. All travel costs to away matches are reimbursed by City, University of London.

A CAPTAIN’S VIEW OF TEAM SPORT When I joined City, I knew I wanted to get involved in sports. I’d always loved playing team sports so when I went to fresher’s fair I signed up to trial for every sport with a women’s team. The first trial I attended was football and because I’m a goalkeeper, quite a rarity amongst female footballers, I was told I’d have a regular place in the team if I joined, so join I did.

my Masters and work. University sport can be a big commitment and being captain of what was effectively a brand-new team seemed like a full-time task at the start of the year. I definitely learnt all about time management this year.

I played football for two years and made loads of friends from other courses, as well as Biomedical Engineers like me but in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. I All the captains of City’s teams also became a great found playing weekly, competitive football to be a really group of friends, arranging for our teams to watch other great outlet for the stresses I had, both in university team’s games, giving advice and outside of it. But it wasn’t to one another and working just fellow footballers who together to affect positive I’d always loved playing I met. There’s an incredible change in the Students’ Union. team sports so when sporting community here at We also had fantastic support City and throughout my time from the staff within the Sport & I went to fresher’s fair I’ve only seen it grow. I’ve made leisure department and without I signed up to trial friends for life and have so them we’d never have been able for every sport with a many fantastic memories, none to set the team up again. of which would have been women’s team. This year couldn’t have gone any possible without the football better. Due to our recruitment team. efforts we had a large squad who gelled and played Between my second and third years I went on a Year in so well together that we won every single one of our Industry and upon my return I was devastated to find League matches. We became an exceedingly strong out that the Women’s Football team had disbanded. I unit, always encouraging one another and generally therefore took on the task of setting it up again. After having a laugh. Being part of a sports team isn’t just running recruitment stalls, spreading the word on about the physical health benefits but is also about the social media and running social events at City Bar, I got mental health benefits. Having a group of friends away the go ahead for the team to be entered into a league from your course is a great outlet for any academic for the following year. This meant I would be captaining stress and experiencing the amazing feelings together the team during my Masters. when you win is invaluable. I could not recommend team sport more. I was exceptionally nervous as I needed to make sure we recruited enough players for a whole team – the only existing players from the previous team were myself and my vice-captain. I also had to bear in mind I would be juggling the captaincy and football with

Sport: athletics 400m and 200m What inspired you to become an athlete? Sport has been instilled in me for as long as I can remember. From dancing at the age of two, to beating the schoolboys in running races, I have always loved being active. I enjoyed a variety of sports when I was younger but the competitive nature of sprinting stood out for me. I loved the adrenaline rush of reacting to the gun, the challenge of striving for continual improvement and the fact that athletics just made me happy. Greatest sporting achievements • Being selected to represent England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the 4x400m • European Junior 400m Silver Medallist • World Junior 4x400m Silver Medallist Big competitions coming up in 2018 • Commonwealth Games • England Athletics Championships • Senior Indoor and Outdoor Championships How are you preparing? I focus on the first 24 hours in front of me. You can’t control the uncontrollable, so day by day, I make sure that I do everything I can to help me compete at my best when it matters. For example, stretching and foam-rolling every morning, refuelling my body correctly pre-and post-work out and making sure I get at least eight hours sleep each night.

Tell us about CitySport and the facilities CitySport’s facilities are incredible. The provision of modern and highly technical equipment allows me to complete my gym programmes effectively. It’s also so convenient when I have hour-long gaps between lectures. It is so close to City, I can go to my morning lecture, go to the gym, then come back for my afternoon lecture. Any advice for getting active at city? There’s nothing worse than doing something you don’t enjoy, otherwise it will feel like a chore. So, do what you love.

Chiswick. My training is a mixture of water sessions, rowing machine sessions, strength and conditioning and cross-training. Tell us about CitySport and the support that has helped you I have been given a free gym membership so I can train at the wellequipped CitySport gym. Furthermore, CitySport funds my training costs. I don’t have to worry about paying for kit, accommodation, travel and training camps as it has all been sorted. CitySport has taken my mind off my other struggles and has let me focus on competing. Any advice for getting active at city? Do it! I have had my best experiences at university through sport. You make loads of friends, compete at your highest levels, de-stress after class and become a better well-rounded person. I can’t see any negatives.

Congratulations to Rufus for winning a gold medal as part of the GB men’s eight at this summer’s FISU World University Rowing Championships.

Sport: rowing What inspired you to become an athlete? I was injured playing rugby and then inspired by London 2012. That September, when I went to the University of Edinburgh, I began rowing. Greatest sporting achievement Representing Team GB at the World Championships. I will never forget the feeling of sitting at the start line in the final for the first time in Plovdiv, Bulgaria during the summer of 2015. Big competitions coming up in 2018 GB selection trials throughout the year, Henley Royal Regatta representing the University and fingers crossed, World Championships back in Plovdiv. Greatest sporting achievement Placing 7th at the World Championships and being ranked in the top 15 fighters in the world for my category. Since starting Karate at the age of 7, I’ve also finished 5th at two different European Championships which were also very special. Both the training leading up to major championships and the tournaments themselves are an emotional rollercoaster, so looking back at what I’ve achieved, I’m very proud. However, I want to be the best in the world. Big competitions coming up in 2018 The Series A events, which are international competitions where the best fighters compete to increase their ranking. My ultimate aim is to qualify for the Olympic Games but I will also be competing for selection for the Senior European Championships in 2019, using the BUCS and the National Championships as my preparation. How are you preparing? I am attending a training camp in Hong Kong where I will train with multiple European and World Champions. After the camp I will be able to incorporate the training into my sessions at home. Tell us about CitySport and the support that has helped you I cannot speak highly enough of CitySport and the team here. The facilities are amazing and the team are extremely welcoming and supportive. It is lovely to be involved with sport at City because each member of staff cares about everybody taking part in sport, be it competitively or just for fun. They have made sure I have had the space and equipment to train and have also helped me attend tournaments around the country. Any advice for getting active at city? Just try things out. I also play for the basketball team and I love being part of the team. Don’t be afraid to join clubs and teams and if you have a passion for any sport, share it with others at City.

2017/18 SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS NBA TRAINING AT CITY On receiving an email saying City was looking for volunteers to work with the NBA teams in London, I instantly hit reply to confirm I would love to help. A few days later Martina and Aastha from the Women’s Basketball team and myself were sitting and listening to instructions from Matt, City’s Communications Officer. This was a media day and we had access to enter the Boston Celtics practice session and ask the players a few questions. When we entered CitySport we were checked by security, including their sniffer dog and went to the waiting room, where there were 100s of journalists from all around the world. After the Boston Celtics had finished their private training it was our time to go to the court. On our way Brian Scalabrine, an NBA legend, was standing right in front of me. This was the first moment I thought ‘Is this really happening?’ When we entered the court the Boston Celtics were in small teams doing shooting drills. There they were, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Jayson Tatum, Kyrie Irving – all the NBA stars, training on our court, the same court as our University Basketball Club. You could tell the Celtics were having fun, they were cheering and laughing with each other and clearly used to all the cameras and media attention. The journalists slowly filled the space around the main court with cameras and microphones everywhere. One of the Celtics’ support staff called the players over one at a time to answer questions. When Kyrie Irving, one of the top players in the NBA, was called 90% of the journalists quickly gathered around him. I managed to squeeze in too and stand a few feet away from the NBA superstar. Never in my life did I imagine that I would be so close to some of the best basketball players in the world. Since there was a strict protocol selfies were not allowed,

nor did we manage to take group pictures with the other key players, but later the three of us got a picture with NBA rookie Guerschon Yabusele. Nevertheless, we were able to take a lot of pictures and videos of the team practicing and being interviewed. Being on the court with the NBA players was a surreal experience. Millions of people, including me, watch these players on TV competing in the NBA. Now I’ve had this fantastic opportunity to witness the legendary Boston Celtics training and being interviewed up close. The whole experience felt like a dream. Vlad Kolesnik BSc Investment and Financial Risk Management Witnessing an NBA training session live from the side line was a dream come true and definitely one of the highlights of my year. It felt surreal to be within touching distance of the players and All-Stars like Kyrie Irving and Jayson Tatum that you usually only see on TV. One of the things that surprised me the most was how comfortable and united they were with each other, which is a hard but crucial feature to develop in professional teams. It’s definitely showing in Boston’s great season so far. The best part for me was when they put on a dunk show at the end but watching them doing drills on our court and dunking in our rims was incredible. It will definitely be one of the best memories of my student life at City and I’m so glad we got the chance to be involved. Playing for a team is incredibly fun and it’s great to represent your university across the UK. It’s also a great way to meet people outside your course and create longlasting relationships. So I’d really encourage students to give it a go and get involved. Martina Capelli BSc Business Studies

Our sports clubs, individual sports opportunities and CityActive sessions are open to all City students. The Sport & Leisure Services team at City are committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and equality and ensuring best practice is implemented at all times.
