President’s foreword This is the sixth Sustainability Report, compiled by the University’s Sustainability team, which provides a broad review of the sustainability activities we have undertaken during 2017/18.

Environmental Management System

Our Environmental Management System (EMS) remains certified to the international standard ISO14001; ensuring we remain legally compliant, are continually improving our sustainability performance and embedding environmental management practices across the institution.

2017/18 Target Monitor BREEAM credits to ensure the maximum available are achieved at Cass and Sebastian Street.

• M aintain 90% recycling rate from all construction projects. • Minimum requirement of SKA Gold at design and handover. • Monitor BREEAM credits to ensure maximum available are achieved at Sebastian Street (Excellent) and any other major developments. • Develop campus wide climate change adaptation strategy and fully align with institutional objectives.

2017/18 Target Reduce water consumption by 3%.

Result: Not met Water consumption increased by 4% (48252m3). Analysis of water consumption across all campus buildings remains broadly similar to the previous year. As such, the increase in this year’s consumption can be directly attributed to the Sebastian Street development.

2018/19 Target • Maintain water consumption at 0.43m3/m2.

Waste Management

Transport and Travel

2017/18 Target

The University conducts a staff and student travel survey every two years.

Achieve 65% recycling rate across campus.

Result: Not met

2017/18 Target Update the University travel plan to reflect changes to the University.

Total recycling rate of 55%.

Result: Met 2017/18 Target

The University’s travel plan was updated to reflect recent travel survey data and changes to site.

Achieve 55% recycling rate at The City Law School.

Result: Not met The City Law School achieved a recycling rate of 45%. A change in methodology of data collection may have resulted in lower performance rates, continued monitoring in 2018/19 will provide confirmation.

2018/19 Targets • Achieve 65% recycling rate across campus. • Achieve 55% recycling rate at The City Law School.

2018/19 Target • Measure and publish a baseline of our travel emissions.

Sustainable Food and Fairtrade 2017/18 Target Achieve a minimum one star Sustainable Restaurant Association rating across City.

Biodiversity 2017/18 Target

Lexington hold a two star rating and Sodexo hold a three star rating.

Increase unique Bee team attendees by 10%.

Result: Met

2017/18 Target Maintain Fairtrade university status.

There were 81 members of the Bee team, a 69% increase.

2017/18 Target Hold four gardening events for staff and/or students.

Result: Not met The Drysdale Garden project was delayed until November 2018.

Result: Met Fairtrade university status was renewed in July 2018.

2018/19 Targets • A chieve a minimum two star Sustainable Restaurant Association rating across City. • Ensure sustainability KPIs are included in the new catering contract. • Maintain Fairtrade university status.

Ethical Investment 2017/18 Target Communicate the sustainable investment policy to our stakeholders.

Result: Met Regular updates regarding the policy are provided to University senior management and Council (including Students’ Union president) via quarterly financial reports and the annual report. The sustainable investment statement is available on the City website.

2018/19 Target • Work with our investment managers to produce and publish a report detailing our investments.

Sustainable Procurement 2017/18 Target Deliver Life Cycle Appraisal training sessions for all project and procurement managers.

Curriculum and Research City aims to, where appropriate, align its curriculum with the wider aims of sustainable development. Following on from previous curriculum reviews, City has completed an initial review to identify a methodology of mapping curricular output against the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

2017/18 Target Complete review of curricular output by 2018 against Sustainable Development Goals. REF submission to be reviewed 2020.

Result: Partially met Initial review completed and processes defined.

2018/19 Targets • L aunch a student-led review of curricular output against Sustainable Development Goals. • REF submission to be reviewed 2021. • City to sign Sustainable Development Goals Accord.

Result: Met Life Cycle Appraisal training delivered to all procurement managers and roadshow delivered to other relevant university staff.

2018/19 Targets • •

Publish the carbon emissions associated with the University’s top ten product categories by spend. Map supply chain and manufacturing locations of the University’s top ten suppliers by spend.

Workers’ Rights City is committed to exceeding the statutory minima for the majority of the terms and conditions of service for our staff. This includes a commitment that all staff are paid at a level above the London Living Wage and that contractors with staff working on City’s premises ensure those staff are paid at the level of the London Living Wage.

Staff Engagement The Sustainable City Challenge is an in-house staff engagement programme that gives staff the opportunity to make their departments and the University more sustainable. Staff can take part in monthly challenges and organise their own Extra Mile projects (campaigns, events or activities that have a positive impact on the environment or society).

Three Sustainability Leader projects completed; Reusable cups, Ecosia project and City Food Co-Op veg box scheme.

Two Sustainability Leader projects ongoing; Sustainability maps and Renewable energy school workshops.

2017/18 Target Develop and deliver a programme of events for staff and students during Sustainable City Week.

Result: Met 2017/18 Target

City celebrated the 9th Sustainable City Week.

On average, each Sustainable City Challenge participant to complete two challenges.

Result: Met On average, each participant completed 2.25 challenges.

614 staff participated in the Sustainable City Challenge and 47 Extra Mile Projects completed by staff.

2018/19 Target • Participants to complete an average of 2.5 challenges each.

Over 10 events, stalls and activities were held throughout the week.

Highlights included the Cycle Cinema, the Big City Swap and a refurbished bicycle sale.
