President’s foreword This is the fifth Sustainability Report, compiled by the University’s Sustainability Team, which provides a broad review of the sustainability activities we have undertaken during 2016/17.

Our Environmental Management System (EMS) remains certified to the international standard ISO14001; ensuring we remain legally compliant, are continually improving our sustainability performance and embedding environmental management practices across the institution.

Biodiversity

Sustainable Food and Fairtrade 2016/17 target

Increase membership of the Bee team by 30%.

Achieve an overall Sustainable Restaurant Association rating of one for City, University of London.

Result: Not Met There were 48 members of the Bee team, a 7% increase.

2016/17 target

Result: Partially met An overall rating was not achieved due to changes in the SRA rating system. Lexington have been recertified and received a two star certification and Sodexo are awaiting final certification.

50% of relevant refurbishment projects to target the ecology Good Practice Measure.

2017/18 target

Result: Met

• A chieve a minimum one star SRA rating across City. • Maintain Fairtrade university status.

The main entrance refurbishment project included several biodiversity elements including tree planting and a green roof. The Drysdale ground floor project include SKA ecology Good Practice Measures. A new university garden will be delivered as part of phase 2.

2017/18 targets • Increase unique Bee team attendees by 10%. • Hold four gardening events for staff and/or students.

Transport and Travel The University conducts a staff and student travel survey every two years.

Ethical Investment 2016/17 target Establish and publish the University position in regard to ethical investment and divestment.

Result: Met Through positive and negative screening, City seeks companies demonstrating a responsible approach to environmental social and governance issues and avoids investing in companies which do not. Further details are included in our Sustainable Investment Policy.

2017/18 targets

2016/17 results 20% of the respondents for the student and staff surveys walk or cycle to the University.

• Communicate the sustainable investment policy to our stakeholders.

79% of the respondents for the student and staff surveys use public transport to travel to the University.

2016/17 target 60% of international travel to be booked via central travel management agency.

Result: Not met 2017/18 target • Update the University travel plan to reflect changes to the University.

Sustainable Procurement

Curriculum and Research

City aims to, where appropriate, align its curriculum with the wider aims of sustainable development. To this end City has mapped its curricular and research output against the three pillars of Sustainable Development.

Develop a robust process for Sustainability involvement in relevant tenders.

Courses referencing Sustainability

The Procurement team notify the Sustainability team of upcoming tenders to allow inclusion of sustainability criteria where relevant.

Achieve level 4 in all areas of the Flexible Framework and set up the building blocks to aim for Level 5 for 2017/18.

Result: Partially met The University has reached level 4, however a target has not been set to reach level 5.

2017/18 target • D eliver Life Cycle Appraisal training sessions for all project and procurement managers.

Workers’ Rights City is committed to exceeding the statutory minima for the majority of the terms and conditions of service for our staff. This includes a commitment that all staff are paid at a level above the London Living Wage and that contractors with staff working on City’s premises ensure those staff are paid at the level of the London Living Wage.

Stakeholder Engagement

Staff Engagement

2017/18 target

The Sustainable City Challenge is an in-house staff engagement programme that gives staff the opportunity to make their departments and the University more sustainable. Staff can take part in monthly challenges and organise their own Extra Mile projects (campaigns, events or activities that have a positive impact on the environment or society).

Complete a sustainability communications and engagement review.

Sustainability Leaders Sustainability Leaders work with the Sustainability team to deliver engagement projects on campus and in the community.

2016/17 target 600 unique participants in the Sustainable City Challenge.

Result: Met 779 staff participated at least once in the Sustainable City Challenge.

2016/17 target Fifteen students to complete a project as part of the Sustainability Leader programme.

35 Extra Mile Projects completed by staff.

2017/18 target

Result: Not met

• On average, each Sustainable City Challenge participant to complete two challenges.

11 students successfully completed the Sustainability Leaders Programme and delivered the following projects:

Sustainable City Week

Starting up a food co-operative.

Hosting a swap shop for staff and students.

Selling reusable cups on campus.

Promoting Earth Hour to students.

2016/17 target Develop and deliver a programme of events for staff and students during Sustainable City Week.

Result: Met

652 students signed up to the sustainability mailing list and had the opportunity to participate in one-off volunteering opportunities.

2017/18 target • Five projects to be completed by the Sustainability Leaders.
